CHAPTER II Expressing Like and Dislike


General Purpose Students can express their feeling about like and dislike with good expression. Specific Purpose Students can use proper terminology of like and dislike about something in speaking or writing. Introduction People may have different opinion about something. For example, there are people who like football meanwhile others do not like it, or we can see some people who like a cat as their pet but others may choose a dog because they do not like cats. This feeling of like and dislike can be expressed in speaking or in writing properly because actually the feeling is not the same among people. Some people may like football more than others. On the other side, there are people who do not like a cat but they can still welcome one if they have to, meanwhile, other people may not welcome it at all. So, the degree of like and dislike are varied among people and it can be expressed with proper terminologies. Materials Here are some expression of like and dislike and the degree represented by a plus (+) for like and a minus (-) for dislike. More plus means that the degree of like is high, on the contrary, more minus means more feeling of dislike. Adore He has adored Persela since he was thirteen. I adore my father for his struggle in life. This is the expression that can be shown about something that we like most and we do not want the thing disturbed, annoyed or lost because we will really sorry, sad and even mad for that. ++++

Love, be crazy about, be +++ The people are crazy about swimming mad about, be a great fan at night. of I am a great fan of Iwan Fals. These are the expression to show the feeling about something that we really like but the degree is lower than adore. Maybe there is little acceptance if the thing annoyed or lost. Like, be fond of, be keen on We like playing tennis. She is keen on cooking in her spare time. These are general expression used to show our feeling about something that we like but if we loose the thing we can receive it although there is still sad feeling about it. Actually, this expression can be assumed we like but if we dont have it anymore feeling. Dont mind + Dislike I dont mind sitting beside him. They dont mind receiving the critic. as neutral feeling about something that we can accept it well without any sad ++

He dislikes dogs. I dislike drinking coffee in the morning. This is the expression to show our feeling about something we do not like but if we get it or experience it we can accept it without too much sadness or bad feeling. Hate She hates me for what Ive done to her. They hate people who do not respect others. This expression is used to show our feeling about something we do not like and we cannot accept the situation when we have to deal with the thing we hate. We will choose to avoid it instead of meeting or accepting it. Cant stand, cant bear, detest. I cant bear people who lie to me. My mother detests a smoker inside our house. These are expression is used to show our most bad feeling about something we do not like and there is no chance to accept the situation when we have to deal with the thing we hate. We must turn our back and do our best to refuse it. -- -

Exercise I (speaking) Express your feeling orally about the things below: 1. People who cheat on an examination. 2. A girl who wear mini skirt on campus. 3. A boy with long hair and earrings 4. A tattooed boy or girl. 5. A lazy lecturer who always comes late. 6. People who like mocking others. 7. Going to a beautiful beach for vacation during holidays. 8. Swimming in a swimming pool on a hot day. 9. Watching western movie. 10. Ice cream and chocolate. 11. Riding on a motorcycle around countryside. 12. Sleeping all day on holidays. 13. Fried chicken and soft drink for lunch. 14. A dangdut concert. 15. A rock concert. Exercise II (speaking and writing) Ask your friend beside you about his/her family members like and dislike. Then, put the information in a table complete with the degree of like and dislike. After that, make a good sentence base on each information you get. Example: Like things Dislike things

Andis father loves smoking for he can consume three packs in a day. On the other hand, he detests laziness and he never spends his time with sitting and sleeping in his spare time. He is the person who likes coffee to accompany him during the working time. But, unlike ordinary adults, he hates western movie because according to him, we cant learn anything from it.
