Title of Unit: 2nd Grade Economics Title of Lesson: Saving Money Submitted By: Jamie Holst

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is day 1 of 2 and helps students understand why people save money. Students will explore different reasons people might save money. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd. Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-8. Small group for steps 9-10. C. Materials: 1 copy of the book Just Saving My Money by Mercer Mayer. White board Dry Erase Markers D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E10.2.2 Identify reasons for saving money.

Student-Friendly Standards I can list reasons why people save money.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher reads the book, Just Saving My Money by Mercer Mayer. 2. Teacher asks students what they thought about the book. 3. Teacher reminds students a concept from the lesson about making choices. Little critter has some money already but he wants a skateboard. He could spend that money on something small right away. Why didnt he do that instead of saving? 4. Ask students what other reasons there might be to save money? 5. Short discussion. 6. Go through what is means to save money. Define and answer questions. Explain how saving can relate to different things, not just money. 7. Ask students how saving money can be helpful to people. Ask students to think about reasons other than to buy things I want. 8. Discuss that saving money is part of a budget. Remind students about what they learned about income and responsibility. Define budget and explain how it relates to saving money.

9. Students will work in small groups to generate some examples of when people would save money or need a budget. 10. Groups will share their examples with the class. 11. Teacher will elaborate on each example and clarify misconceptions regarding budget and savings. 12. CLOSURE: Ask students to think of how they could save money. Where would they keep it? Students will share their answers with the members of their group. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? This lesson doesnt require a written assessment. I will use the group examples as the assessment in this lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. This lesson is similar to day 1 of consumer and producer. I will use the students examples as a way of seeing how well they understand why people save money.
