roads behind us, long days of sunshine before us, and distant tunes of ice cream trucks surrounding us. Summer is finally here! Looking towards the upcoming months here at KETsda, were beginning an exciting summer series of mini-newsletters sharing the news, events, and stories of our church congregations youth. It is my hope that through the warm months of summer, our church family can continue to share the warmth of Christian fellowship with those among us both young and young-at-heart!

And so we enter the season of year when all students are in good cheer: Summer! Yes, it is finally upon us! The slush of salty snow covered

Helping Students Find the Right Ladder

By Tim Elmore of GrowingLeaders.com Recently, Stephen Kellogg did a talk at the annual TED Concordia U Portland event. My friend Brett Wilkes turned me on to it in a recent post. Stephen made a number of memorable statements about the joy of work, something we all desire, but few realize. From his youth, he always wanted to be a touring musician, with albums and merchandise, fans and concerts. He loves what he now gets to do and feels fortunate to have the chance to touch audiences with his music. One of his sticky statements in the TED talk was: Its better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb, than the top of a ladder you dont. Like most artists, when Stephen first started, no one had heard of him and it took time to build a platform. It didnt matter, however, that he didnt have money or paying events. What mattered was he was working in the field he loved; he had the chance to do what he felt was important and was gifted to do. I remember this same feeling when I first started my non-profit, Growing Leaders. No one was getting rich, and in the early days it was just me and one other team member, David Christie. We were cutting our teeth in the business of leader development and were climbing a steep learning curve. But we loved it. Id wake up every morning and could hardly wait to get to work. Summer Times Helping Students Find the Right Ladder Cont.

At night, I found myself thinking about how we could do our work better. It wasnt about the money; it was about doing something in our gift area and adding value to schools and students. We were at the bottom of a ladderbut we loved the ladder. I still do. mission you believe in, then dont work for the cash, but for the cause. Even playing a small part can make a difference. Next, make sure the mission is solving a problem or meeting a need. Thomas Edisons first patented invention was a machine that tabulated votes for bureaucrats in government. He soon discovered that no congressman wanted votes to be counted quickly as they all wanted time to lobby for more influence while the votes were being counted. He was rejected. From that point on, Edison determined he would still be an inventor, but always work in response to a need or demand. How Do You Choose Your Ladder? When passion, need, strength and opportunity all meetyou are on a good ladder: 1. Passion the work represents something you love doing. 2. Need the work you do answers a cry and solves a problem. 3. Strength the work you do involves you using your primary strength. 4. Opportunity the work you do isnt forced but is a prospect in front of you. May I encourage you to have this conversation with a young person you know. Ladders are everywhere, and we must help students find theirs.

Its about doing something in our gift area and adding value to students.

One of the great fears of graduates these days is that theyll get stuck in a job they dont like and theyll feel claustrophobic. Its terrifying enough to start at the bottom and pay your dues in a cause you ultimately believe in. Its still another to do it when your ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. This is the key Id like you to pass along to the students you teach or parent. Identify the

A Look Back at REVIVE: A Youth Spiritual Event

By Kasper Haughton Jr. Just a few short weeks ago the youth of Kettering and Centerville Churches took our church by storm! What was born out of a discussion with 9 student leaders around dinner at Elder Ben Moushons house last fall ended in an amazing collaboration weekend celebrating the supremacy of Jesus in our faith community! One hundred and twenty high-school and middleschool youth gathered throughout the weekend of April 5-6 for worship, word, fellowship, and community service in collaboration with special guests from Southern Adventist University. Both their Destiny Drama Company and Engage Ministry (with speaker Tony Anobile Jr.) teams joined, providing support for this youth led event. The vision our youth developed for REVIVE, was for a weekend of revival not just another ra-ra youth rally.

Everything from the layout of the church room, to the music, and community service project at the Good Neighbor house was born from this central dream to be intentional about gathering as the body of Christ in celebration of our Savior!

The next time you see our 2012-2013 youth leadership team Jessica Brasov, Lindsey Conkle, Mike Deal, Alissa Deal, Lindsey Haffner, Natalie Hotz, Elisabeth Schell, Zach Johnson, Sean McCartney, and Sonny Moretta give them a word of encouragement!

Summer Times Mission Trip at a Glance

By Lindsey Conkle

This year for our mission trip we went to H.E.A.R.T ministry in Lavonia, Georgia. We not only did yard work outside the facilities, but we also helped minister to the women through various skits and worships. On top of that, we worked at the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter down the road from H.E.A.R.T. toward the end of the week, helping walk and play with the animals there. At the beginning of our trip we stopped in Gatlinburg for the weekend to have some time to connect with God. This mission trip was amazing for me because we had more of a chance to interact with people that were not from our group and minister to others. We heard testimonies from the women there and I was able to attend one of their AA meetings which gave me some insight on the womens conditions and their recovery process. Seeing their smiling faces each day for worship was very encouraging for me personally, and I know our group had a lot of fun with the various skits we performed. On the last day, we performed the Life House skit and by the

end of it, some of the women were so touched, they were in tears. Our time in Gatlinburg was also well spent. I found this time useful because all of the students and sponsors were able to connect and get closer, which I feel helped us as we worked throughout the week. Not only were we able to stay in a scenic cabin in the mountains, but we got to do various team building exercises, one of which included a hike in the mountains on Saturday afternoon. You could feel the strong bond our group had with each other. ___________________ We were also able to use this time to connect to God personally and as a group. You could feel the strong bond our group had with each other, and by the end of the week not only did I feel closer to God, but I feel that I had touched each of the womens lives while at the rehab center.
