Abstract
In recent years a plethora of wireless technologies has become available. Users may efficiently utilize heterogeneous network infrastructures while moving among different access networks in order to attain better services, everywhere and at any time, following the always best connected concept. In this article enhanced handover functionality is described for integrated WiFi/WiMAX networks, based on the recently established IEEE 802.21 standard that serves to glue together heterogeneous wireless access technologies. Moreover, alternative implementation choices are introduced with an emphasis on the mapping of primitives between the IEEE 802.21 standard and the various underlying access network technologies. As a result, optimized mediaindependent handover operations are provided alongside highlighted possible improvements to the related standards.

Abstract
Recently there has been much effort, in both academia and industry, to integrate a plethora of wireless technologies in order to provide ubiquitous broadband access to mobile users. Handover management is still one of the most challenging issues to be solved for seamless integration of wireless networks. This article addresses the integration of IEEE 802.11 WLANs and IEEE 802.16 WMANs, focusing mainly on the handover management aspects. First, we describe architectures, futuristic application scenarios such as the envisioned heterogeneous multihop wireless networks (HMWNs) and moving networks, as well as the related research issues. Second, we present IEEE 802.21, a new emerging standard aimed at providing a framework for media-independent handover(MIH) among heterogeneous networks. Finally, we discuss how the MIH framework can help handover management for the integrated network.

Abstract
Supporting a multimode mobile device to seamlessly switch its connections between various wireless access networks, such as WiMAX, Wi-Fi, and LTE, is an important research issue in 4G communications. The IEEE 802.21 working group defines the Media Independent Handover (MIH) standard to provide cross layer control and the information of network environment and services to optimize the handoff process. This work designs and implements the MIH middleware in a Linux platform to provide MIH event services (MIH-ES), MIH command services (MIH-CS) and MIH information services (MIH-IS). Based on the MIH software, we develop a high quality VoIP system which integrates Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), two MIH-IS based user motion detection (UMD) services and an adaptive QoS playout algorithm (AQP). The MIH services, multi-homing capability and dynamic address configuration extension of SCTP are applied in the VoIP system to perform seamless handoffs. Moreover, AQP adjusts the playout buffer by using the retransmission of partial reliable SCTP (PR-SCTP) and the MIH-ES to reduce the packet loss rate and improve speech quality. The experiment results indicate that MIH can enhance the performance of the handoff process and the quality of wireless VoIP services.
