A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is on specific portion of the 13 colonies- the New England region to be exact. Students will explore the colonies (which are now states) that made up the New England Region. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th grade Skill Level: all skill levels Grouping: whole group (warm ups, website visits), small group(warm ups, mapping-website visit) C. Materials: Computers Paper Markers Pencils PowerPoint Map Sheet Questionnaire D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards H1.5.5 Describe the social, political, and religious lives of people in the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. H1.5.6 Identify individuals and groups responsible for founding and settling the American colonies. G6.5.2 Identify U.S. regions in which historical events occurred, i.e., thirteen colonies, Underground Railroad, and California gold fields. G5.5.4 Construct maps, graphs, and charts to display information about human and physical features in the United States.

Student-Friendly Standards H1.5.5. I can describe different aspects of the people who lived in the colonies. H1.5.6. I can identify different groups who are responsible for finding and settling in the colonies.

E. Procedure: 1. Students will be asked what colonies they think belong in the New England Region. Students will discuss it in their small groups, and one person from each group will give their response. 2. As a class, we will visit the following websites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ScZh2-QLOE And http://mrnussbaum.com/13colonies/13regions/#ne for the first website, students will watch the video to gain more knowledge about the colonies. For the second website, we will discuss the colonies that make up the New England colonies. 3. In their small groups, students will visit the website: http://mrnussbaum.com/13colonies/13profiles/. Students are to color on their map the New England Colonies. Students are to then click on each of the red colored colonies to find out more information about each colony. Students are to write the information down. 4. Students will receive a brief lecture on these specific colonies to gain a better understanding about the colonies. 5. CLOSURE: Review the basis of what the New England Colonies were. F. Assessment: a. What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will have to answer a questionnaire. Students will have 6 multiple choice, 5 true-false, and 4 short answer questions about the New England Colonies. b. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will grade their questionnaires. Based on their responses and how well they did on the multiple choices and true-false, I will be able to tell if they understood the information. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

The easiest part will be having the students locate the region of the colonies. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? Probably teaching why the colonies were divided and how it became this way will be the hardest part to teach. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Have students do further research. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Try to figure out what it is they do not understand and give specific material for it. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I dont think the lesson needs to be changed. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? It was fairly easy.
