ABSENCE FROM AN ASSESSMENT TASK If a student is absent from school on the day when an assessment task is held, he must apply in writing to the Head Teacher for an alternative assessment task. It is the student's responsibility to make this application at the earliest practicable opportunity. In the case of illness a medical certificate is required. In the case of misadventure supportive independent documentation must be provided. In these cases the medical certificate or documentation must cover the period of absence and detail why the student was not able to attempt the assessment task. In the case of illness, the date of onset of the illness plus any additional dates of consultation should be supplied; the health professional should describe the student's symptoms and describe how these symptoms could impede the student's performance. In the case of misadventure, the date and time of the occurrence and subsequent events should be detailed. If a student is unwell and chooses to sit for the task or examination then the result obtained for that task or examination stands as an official assessment task or examination result. Obtaining a Medical Certificate after the assessment task or examination is unacceptable. If the reason for absence is acceptable, the Head Teacher will inform the student of the date and time of the alternative task [two weeks notice is not required]. In exceptional circumstances [eg where the completion of a substitute task is not feasible or where a task is difficult to duplicate] the Head Teacher will use an estimate for that task. If the reason is deemed unacceptable by the Head Teacher and Principal, the student will be given a mark of zero. If a student knows in advance that he will be away from school when an assessment task has been scheduled he must notify the relevant Head Teacher(s) as early as possible. If the absence is for a valid reason, then an alternative task may be arranged or an estimate given. Under no circumstances will a task be given in advance of the scheduled date. ABSENCE ON THE DAY OF AN ASSESSMENT TASK OR THE SCHOOL DAYS BEFORE AN ASSESSMENT TASK Students are expected to attend all timetabled lessons (including sport) on the five school days before an Assessment Period commences. Unless there are acceptable circumstances, 5% of the possible mark will be deducted from a student's results for each lesson that a student does not participate in on the five school days before an Assessment Period. ASSESSMENT PERIODS Formal HSC Assessment Periods: 1: Weeks 7 and 8 of Term 4 Year 11 2: Weeks 10 and 11 of Term 1 Year 12 3: Weeks 8 and 9 of Term 2 Year 12 4: Weeks 4, 5 and 6 of Term 3 Year 12. MALPRACTICE The usual penalty for copying, plagiarism or other forms of cheating is a mark of zero. The Principal will decide the penalty that will apply to each person involved in a specific instance.
