Rod Holcombe Structural Geology Animation Library

The following short animations have been developed by Rod Holcombe for use in undergraduate Structural Geology courses at The University of Queensland. They can be viewed directly in your net browser without requiring any addins.
These animations are copyright to R.J.Holcombe. You are free to download and use these images for academic purposes but if you wish to redisplay them in a publically accessible browser then the display must contain a clear link to this page and acknowledgement of the author. Further redistribution of the images on either CD or web download compilations must be with the consent of the author.

Animated GIFs Quicktime Movies The following are animated GIFs (continous cycles) developed by Rod Holcombe (and copyright to him). Flow and strain Pure shear flow showing point displacements Pure shear flow showing changes in orientation and length of lines Pure shear flow showing strain fringe development Simple shear flow showing point displacement and ISA Simple shear flow showing changes in orientation and length of lines Simple shear flow showing fabrics developed by accumulating strain Simple shear flow showing point displacement, strain fringe, and growth of snowball porphyroblast Simple shear flow of randomly oriented trilobites Shear Zones Evolution of fabrics from a random fabric in a pure shear zone Evolution of strain and fabrics in a shear zone with variable strain Evolution of fabrics from a random fabric in a simple shear zone Simple shear showing evolution of gash veins Evolution of veins in a faulted shear The following are Quicktime Movie versions of the above. The files are substantially bigger than the gif versions, but the animations are user controllable Pure shear flow showing point displacements Pure shear flow showing changes in orientation and length of lines Pure shear flow showing strain fringe development Simple shear flow showing point displacement and ISA Simple shear flow showing changes in orientation and length of lines Simple shear flow showing fabrics developed by accumulating strain Simple shear flow showing point displacement, strain fringe, and growth of snowball porphyroblast Simple shear flow of randomly oriented trilobites Shear Zones Evolution of fabrics in a pure shear high strain zone Evolution of strain and fabrics in a shear zone with variable strain Evolution of fabrics from initial random fabrics in a simple shear zone Simple shear showing evolution of gash veins

The following animations used in Rod Holcombe's subjects have been derived from a number of sources as shown: Rick Almendinger's fault-bend fold animations (Cornell University) Fault-bend folds at thrust ramps Thrust duplexes Thrusts with uniform deposition of syntectonic piggy-back basin strata Thrusts with variable deposition of syntectonic piggy-back basin strata Return to Rod Holcombe's Home page
