Welcome

May 12 2013

Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Mission Trip Update

The team arrived safely about 6.30pm on Monday after a flight to Ho Chi Minh City, via Singapore. Having had four meals on the plane we didn't have dinner. Instead we opted to go for a walk to orientate ourselves and find a coffee! After coffee and a team meeting we left the cafe. When we stepped outside, David Healey decided to take a photo, when two men on a motor bike raced past him and snatched his Canon SLR camera and sped off. There was nothing anyone could do to retrieve it. We went with David to the police to report it and that was another story in itself! On Tuesday we made our way to the War Museum and that turned out to be quite an emotional time for many as some of the stark history of the Vietnam War came to life for the first time. We then made our way to the Reunification Palace. This was the home of the former Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of South Vietnam, and famous for the storming of the gates by North Vietnamese tanks in 1975 that effectively ended the war. Vietnam then became the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. At night we went out for dinner locally. We sat at tables on the street and took in all the sights and sounds and smells of old Saigon. Wednesday we made our way to the Company of Grace. It's about a 40 minute trip, but what a trip it was. The traffic was chaotic, the driving crazy and we all loved it! It was great to arrive in one piece. The Company of Grace seeks to be compliant in terms of child protection, so as part of their training of leaders, one of their staff led us through a session that they will give to anyone who visits them. After that it was down to work! The fence needed to be scraped of flaky old paint, and lots of bougainvillea had to be removed. The temperature and humidity made the task pretty challenging! However, it wasn't long before paint brushes and rollers were in action. It was great to see this old concrete fence come to life with a fresh coat of paint. We stopped for lunch about 1pm and then, after lunch, applied a second coat. We finished the first wall at 2.30pm and then 20 minutes later we experienced the most amazing tropical storm. Wind, lightening, thunder and rain! We wondered if all our work would be washed away, but it seemed to survive. We will find out more when we return today! Later that afternoon, we visited an orphanage. This was a very confronting time as we saw so many children that have disabilities beyond our own personal experience. Cont

The Director met with us and shared her love for these children and the amazing staff. When we asked what we could do, she simply replied, "Pray for these children". What an amazing response from someone in a communist country! Today we return to the Company of Grace. We are having a great time together, with some challenges along the way. Everyone is still healthy at this stage! Thank you for thinking of us and praying for us. We would say with the Director of the Orphanage, "Pray for the people of Vietnam".
