Vermont Judiciary Trial Court Law Clerk Hiring Information

Vermonts centrally organized trial court law clerk program provides law clerk assistance to trial court judges on location throughout Vermont. Law clerks concentrate on research and writing for all judges of the civil, criminal, and family divisions of the superior court, as assigned, and may participate in other projects. Some law clerks are assigned exclusively to the environmental division of the superior court. Law clerks are hired annually for one-year positions beginning each September. Thereafter, second-year, senior, and staff attorney positions are possible. Applications are accepted annually during the September 1 through October 5 period immediately preceding the September in which the clerkship commences. At the time of application, an applicant must be admitted to the bar of any state, in the final year of law school, or a recent graduate. Both students and experienced practitioners are considered desirable applicants. Hiring for environmental division positions is conducted separately from hiring for all other trial court positions. Applicants for both environmental and other positions, if selected, will be interviewed twice. Such applicants should submit two separate sets of application materials, one for each hiring committee. Federal Courts in Vermont

In the federal court system, Vermont is in the Second Circuit (which also includes Connecticut and all four New York districts). In federal trial courts (the Federal District Courts) and appellate courts (the Circuit Courts of Appeals) judicial law clerks work for individual judges. While most applications to federal judicial clerkships occur in August and early September of your final year of law school, judges set their own application requirements, including opening application dates and deadlines, the materials required, etc. Individual judges interview and hire their own clerks, so that even within one court, the application process may differ from judge to judge. Most federal judges begin viewing applications in early September and will not accept applications until then, per the Federal Hiring clerk plan. Please note: do not send applications prior to the noted time or they will be returned to you. Verify the policy of the individual court before sending application materials
Finding and Applying to Federal Judges The majority of federal judges hire new judicial law clerks each year; however, many of those openings are not advertised. The judges rely on students to locate and contact them individually. All federal judges are listed on Symplicity, the Career Services online recruiting system, under the Judicial Clerkship tab. You can search in a variety of ways and download the clerkships of interest into an Excel file, allowing you to create a mail merge. The Federal Judiciarys System for Clerkship Application and Review (OSCAR), https://oscar.symplicity.com, allows applicants to apply online to participating federal judges (not all federal judges use the program). Some judges will only accept applications via OSCAR, some by mail, and some will accept both. If a judge uses OSCAR, it is noted in their Symplicity listing. OSCAR allows students to designate judges to whom they wish to apply and to submit application materials (rsum, cover letter, transcript, writing sample, recommendations) online. Please note: OSCAR will accept application materials beginning in June and will stop accepting them the first week of September. Judges:
