Program Looking to Establish a Safe Bike Path along Broad Street, Initiating a More Physically Active Lifestyle

The ACHIEVE initiative is unique
to Salamanca. It stands for “Action
Communities for Health, Innovation,
and Environmental Change.” The
program started through funding
provided by the Centers for Disease
Control for the period of 2008 through
2010. Through a partnership with
ACHIEVE, grant dollars were also
awarded to the YMCA in Olean and
Bradford. This is according to Deb
Nichols, an enthusiastic supporter
of the ACHIEVE Initiative, who is
also with the Cattaraugus County
Department of Health. She described
the effort as a “national partnership.”
It is one of only ten original recipients
of this grant out of 127 applicants and
the only recipient in New York State.
Nichols said this is “very exciting”
and has put Salamanca on the map “in
a great, great way.”
The goal of “ACHIEVE” is to
foster partnerships between the New
York State Health Department, local
Health Departments, and YMCAs.
The “ACHIEVE” model is based on
a “healthy community model” which
aims to prevent chronic disease and
related risk factors. The key of the
program is to encourage strategies
“such as an ordinance or a local
law” that will last well beyond the
term of the grant. Nichols said one
example would be to establish “a
safe bike path” along Broad Street in
Salamanca. This would allow people
to ride their bicycles safely to and
from work, and thus become “more

The 2009 Routes to Art brochure is now available upon request to the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. The
brochures provide a sample of art from each of the 42 artists and artisans displaying their work on May 16-17,
directions to their studios, and a map detailing where each of the artists will be showing. Brochures will also be
available at many local venues such as the Olean Public Library, the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, and
Bistro 188. The 2009 tour features 42 regional artists and artisans, including eleven Native American artists and
artisans from the Seneca Nation of Indians. CCAC’s Executive Director Anne Conroy-Baiter says planning is
well underway for Routes to Art 2009. “We’re in the midst of distributing 28,000 brochures as well as getting
ready for the Routes to Art exhibition opening on April 18 at the Quick Center at St. Bonaventure. We’re very
excited about the quality of the art this year as well as the addition of our friends from the Seneca Nation who

and other “non-traditional”
leaders not generally associated
with health care. “What
happens then is that other
people start calling you” such
as a “very active downtown
merchants group” that is trying
to revitalize the downtown
Salamanca area by scheduling
cleanup days and “sprucing up
empty storefronts.” Cleanup
days have been scheduled for
April and May.
Also offering their assistance
is the Salamanca Cares
group, which attempts to curb
substance abuse “and all the
issues that go along with that”
which affect local youth. The
local garden club has also
stepped forward to help out by
giving of their time and financial
resources. Nichols said the
garden club will help convert
the old PENNSY railroad
trail into a useful recreational
facility, one of ACHIEVE’s
primary goals.
Recently, Joe Higgins from the
Olean River Walk Trail joined
local “ACHIEVERS” to walk
the PENNSY trail. Nichols said
Higgins was “most impressed”
with the natural beauty and
potential of the PENNSY.
He has agreed to return to
the trail for the ACHIEVE’s
Reclamation Event on May 9.
Responsibilities for that day will
be determined during a meeting
to be held on Friday, April 17
at Myers Steak House and Inn
from 11:30am-1pm. “The idea
is for the community to take
ownership of the trail, which
is a positive step.” Community
groups are invited “at no cost”
to adopt and maintain sections
of the trail “and take pride in it.”

Musician Matt Young: It All Comes Down to Creativity

Music has been a part of
Matt Young’s life for as long
as he can remember. Formerly
a disc jockey, Young moved
to commercial production two
decades ago and for nearly as
long has been on both sides
of the stage as a band member
and producer.
Young began as a commercial
producer for radio stations
in Buffalo twenty years ago
when he was also serving as
a DJ. He got into the business
almost by chance.
“Part of the (DJ) job is when
you’re off the air, you have to
do other things and I just got
nominated to do commercial
production,” Young said.
He went to 97 Rock in 1992
to do a weekend on-air shift as
well as filled in for other DJ’s
during the week. Working on-
air wasn’t his passion, though.
“DJ’ing gets old,” he said.

Knockout Factory of Salamanca ‘Goes Bald for Bucks’
Several area Mixed Martial Arts teams contributed to
the ‘Going Bald for Bucks’ event on March 31, bringing
their fighters to spar for the crowd, who enjoyed a
spaghetti dinner while watching fighters work out. Many
KnockoutFactory fighters shaved their heads in support
of the event’s charity, Roswell Cancer Institute.

do production work and I just
kind of naturally progressed
into that.”
Young has been doing
production work full-time for
the past 14 years and “retired”
from the DJ side of the business
in 1995. He now works for
seven stations in the Buffalo
market; Kiss, Star 102.5, The
Lake, WGR, WBEN, WWKB
and AM 1400. He says his
favorite part of the job is being
able to use his creativity to
make an ad sound right.
“The creative side of it, just
getting a script and thinking
of how to pull the elements
together, to put all of the sound
effects and music together is
my favorite part (of the job),”
he said. “It gets kind of tricky.”
Away from the station,
Young uses his talent as both a
producer and keyboard player
in the Scott Celani Band.
“He knew I played keyboards
and he recruited me to do a
show in 2004 and it seemed to
be what his band was missing,
I happened to fit into that
bill,” Young said. The band
typically plays between three
and nine shows per month, and
between 50 and 100 shows per
year. The band doesn’t just
limit their playing to Western
New York, however. They
have played in cities such as
Atlanta, Cleveland, Pittsburgh
and New York City.
“It takes you out of your
comfort zone,” Young said
of playing far-away shows.
“In Atlanta or Pittsburgh it’s
just you and the band and
a boxing ring and M.M.A. cage.

“This all started when I
promised to cut my hair to
support my mom when she

Center and goes up gradually to
the top of Cindy’s. From there
it goes across the ridgeline of
the resort and along skinny
windy singletrack to the top
of Eagle, Cochran Pond at the
top of Morning Star and on to
the top of Tannenbaum. For the
adventurous, there are plenty of
single-track trails off the main
route. At Eagle or Tannenbaum
you can venture out across
the logging roads behind the
Valley and on to the WYMBA
trails in the State Forest, or try
your skill at going downhill on
Tannenbaum or the singletrack
on Crystal-Tannenbaum. It’s
all pedal power here at Holiday
Valley ... no lift service, and no
charge to use the trails. Please
remember these common sense
rules: wear a helmet, ride with
a friend, bring a map and stay
off the golf course.
A note to White Trail and
Finger Lakes Trail users: Now
that construction of Spruce lake
is complete, a new White Trail
is located along the west edge
of the lake. Also note: During
the International Bow Hunter’s
World Championships, August
10-16, 2009, the Holiday
Valley biking trails will be
closed. Please note: Spruce
Lake is NOT guarded for

Golf rates and memberships
also remain unchanged for
the 2009 season. The course,
which measures 6,500 yards
and plays a par 70 featuring bent
grass greens, allows members
inclusion to preferred weekend
tee times, as well as 10 to 12
member events during the season.

into the Buffalo District Golf
Association and New York State
