With over 10 years of experience, Susi Yu, senior vice president with Forest City Ratner Companies, has been leading the development of large scale, mixed-use urban projects and is currently working on the development of the first residential building within the Atlantic Yards development in downtown Brooklyn. B2, once completed, will be the tallest modular building in the world. Ms. Yu will discuss the changes occurring in urban multifamily development and the use of modular construction in the commercial real estate industry today. Ms. Yu oversaw the initial master planning and re-development of the Frank Gehry designed $4.9 billion, 22 acre, Atlantic Yards project that will include approximately 6 million square feet of residential space (6,430 units of affordable and market-rate housing), a state of the art sports and entertainment arena, the recently opened Barclays Center (home to the renamed Brooklyn Nets), 247,000 square feet of retail use, approximately 336,000 square feet of office space and 8 acres of publicly accessible open space. B2 will be the first of the three residential towers to rise on the arena site. Composed of 350 residential units, it will employ a unique architectural and structural design approach that is not immediately outwardly apparent; B2 will be the tallest modular building in the world. The construction of B2 will start by end of 2012. Recently, Ms. Yu oversaw the development of 8 Spruce Street, a 76-story, 1.1 million square foot mixed-use project, the tallest residential tower in North America, with 896 market-rate rental units atop a new K-8 public school on a one acre site overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge in Lower Manhattan. The project opened in March 2011 and absorption and rents are in line with projections. Ms. Yus previous projects include negotiating the acquisition of 800,000 SF of development rights with Polytechnic University and overseeing pre-development of a 900,000 SF academic and residential tower. In 2007, she worked on Forest City Enterprises response to a competitive RFP issued by San Franciscos Transbay Joint Powers Authority for a 1.5 million SF, $1.2 billion mixed-use retail, community facility, office, hotel and residential inter-modal project. She also completed the development of 350,000 SF office building at MetroTech and led the initial development of a cultural and residential project in Brooklyn Academy of Musics Cultural District. In 2002, she also worked on negotiating a development agreement with University Heights Science Park to develop 1.7M SF of life science labs, offices, retail and residential units in Newark, NJ. Trained as an architect at the University of Virginias School of Architecture, Ms. Yu previously worked for 10 years as an architect, most recently as a Project Architect for Robert A.M. Stern on such projects as the Nashville Public Library, Disney Orlando Hotel, a $10 million Private Residence in Dallas Texas and the Sterling Glen Senior Residences in Roslyn, New York. She is also a graduate of Columbia Universitys Master of Science in Real Estate Development Program and is a registered architect in New York State.
