A4 DTM

Audi MediaInfo

Foreword
Audi celebrated a title hat-trick in the DTM between 2007 and 2009 and in doing so became the first manufacturer to achieve this. Last year the brand was beaten. For this reason the objective for the 2011 season is: The Audi A4 DTM should finish at the front again. For this reason Audi has rejuvenated its driver squad again. Eleven events, including a show race in the Olympic Stadium in Munich, are on the calendar of the highest caliber touring car race series. While the current DTM cars enter their final season, the foundations for the future have been long since set. The next generation Audi race touring car is already being developed and should continue Audis success story in the DTM from 2012.

Audi in the 2011 DTM

The Audi A4 DTM targets fifth title to bid farewell

The DTM faces a radical change and Audi a challenging task: The Audi A4 DTM competes for the last time this season since the current technical regulations, valid since the 2000 season, expire at the end of the year. The A4 DTM should now fight for its fifth championship title after the Swede Mattias Ekstrm (2004 and 2007) and German Timo Scheider (2008 and 2009) each won two championships with this model. After a season in which we had to admit defeat we now target a return to our previous form, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. For this purpose we will concentrate fully on exploiting the strengths of the A4 DTM. We have also changed our driver squad and who drives which cars and also welcome three new drivers into the team. Rahel Frey from Switzerland, Filipe Albuquerque from Portugal and Edoardo Mortara, who has both Italian and French citizenships, are the three newcomers at Audi. They all competed previously in formula racing and all contest their first season in touring cars. Filipe Albuquerque as

Audi aims to collect its fifth title with the A4 DTM in the 2011 season

2010 Italian GT Championship runner-up in an Audi R8 LMS and Edoardo Mortara as former Volkswagen factory driver and defending 2010 Formula 3 Euro Series champion already have several years of contact with the Group. Thanks to the new signings, the average age of the driver squad sank by six months to 27 years before the start of the season when compared to last year. As a result, Audi starts with its youngest driver line-up in its DTM history. Three proven teams enter the nine Audi A4 DTM cars again this year. Filipe Albuquerque and Edoardo Mortara race for Audi Sport Team Rosberg while Rahel Frey competes for Audi Sport Team Phoenix together with her German team mate Martin Tomczyk. The Spaniard Miguel Molina drives a fifth Audi A4 DTM from 2008 for the Audi Sport Team Abt Junior. Mattias Ekstrm, the Briton Oliver Jarvis and Timo Scheider are the familiar faces on the grid for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. Their new team mate is Mike Rockenfeller. Like his three fellow companions, the German Le Mans winner from last year also has a cockpit in a 2009 Audi A4 DTM. Since car development in the DTM was also not permitted for the 2011 season, engineers concentrate on adapting the A4 DTM to the tires of new exclusive DTM supplier Hankook.

Being developed in parallel is the successor, christened internally R17, which should continue Audis success story in the DTM from 2012. The new model will establish new standards worldwide in passive safety in touring cars. Last year a total of 685,498 spectators followed the eleven DTM races at trackside and an average of 1.2 million fans watched every live broadcast of the races in Germany. In 2011 the DTM stages eleven attractive events including the inaugural show event at the Munich Olympic Stadium.

The race drivers had an average age of

27 at the start of the season.

Efficiency and sustainability

Close transfer between sport and production to the benefit of the end user
An essential basis for motorsport at Audi is the benefit for the end user, the Audi customer and motorist. Motorsport was and is always a medium for Audi to develop technologies with a promising future, stresses Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. In this way rally and racing cars, which always also contained technologies of direct benefit for the customer, have been developed for more than 30 years in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Example 1: The four-wheel drive quattro that was developed for a World Rally Championship program was introduced in 1982 into large-scale production. Audi also proved the superiority of this drivetrain system in the DTM at the beginning of the 1990s. To this day customers benefit from the actual dynamic handling advantages and not only on snow and ice. Example 2: In material technology field, motorsport enjoys the advantage of being able to test components manufactured in low quantities from exotic materials without being subjected to the cost pressures found in large-scale production. Audi initially introduced aluminum to engine and suspension design in rallying at the beginning of the 1980s, before the light metal found favor in largescale production. Even carbon-fiber three decades ago still an exotic material in race cars like the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am and today used in many areas in the Audi A4 DTM is now mass-produced within the concern. The soft top storage compartment and side panels of the R8 Spyder are, for example, manufactured from carbon-fiber. Example 3: Since the 1980s environmental technologies are also used simultaneously in competition and large-scale production. Catalytic converter manufacture suppliers used

motorsport and now mass produced for the assembly line

developments for heat shields which were tested in the Audi 90 quattro raced in the IMSA GTO series. The Audi V8 quattro from 1990 was the first Audi competition car with a race catalytic converter. Motorsport acted as pioneer for the combination of turbocharging and gasoline direct injection after the TFSI power unit in the Audi R8 sports prototype proved victorious first time out at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2001. A few months later it was introduced into largescale production at Audi, facilitates fuel savings and reduces carbon dioxide emissions and thus millionfold in public road traffic. Example 4: Audi writes history in large-scale production since 1989 as inventor of TDI technology. The more efficient

and particularly clean diesel direct injection makes a significant contribution to sinking CO2 emissions. In 2006 at Le Mans Audi became the worlds first manufacturer to claim overall victory in the 24 hour race using diesel technology. Extreme injection and ignition pressures, structural solutions in the crankcase or with the pistons and injector technology development are areas in which Audi practices a direct transfer between motorsport and production. The most recent development for Le Mans, the Audi R18, is equipped with a 3.7 liter V6 TDI. The principle of downsizing, rapidly gaining increasing importance in street cars, is also now implemented in the R18 and helps in the search for solutions under extreme demands.

Two future projects on the horizon

Audi Sport was established more than three decades ago and is today still affiliated with Audis Technical Development (TE) department. Be it rallying, touring cars of every type or sports cars: The Sport department has celebrated important victories and won numerous championship titles in every discipline in which it has competed. Audi has tackled 18 different motorsport projects between 1980 and today. Currently around 200employees at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm sites are responsible for the development and testing of the race cars. The Doctor of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich is Head of Audi Sport is since 1993. Program with two priorities While quattro GmbH develops the Audi customer sport cars since the beginning of 2011, Audi Sport concentrates on the race cars destined for factory programs in touring car and prototype racing. In 2011 this is no less than four different race cars. The Audi R15 TDI competed in its final evolution step at Sebring in March. Parallel to this Audi Sport develops the R18 for all remaining Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) events. The coup is designed with the future in mind and was planned for electrification of the drivetrain. Furthermore, in 2011 the next touring car from Audi Sport, referred to internally as R17, is developed and tested and should fight for the DTM title in 2012.

Lightweight design is core know-how at Audi 20 percent weight reduction since 2004
The Audi A4 DTM competes in its highest evolution form in 2011 before new regulations come into force in 2012. Although any kind of technical evolutions are prohibited since August 17, 2009 to maintain cost efficiency, Audi made significant progress beforehand during the live cycle of each of the individual A4 DTM generations since 2004. Lightweight design and construction, a core talent at Audi, are of equal importance in motorsport and large-scale production. The basic weight of a DTM touring car was reduced by more than 20 percent. Aim of the exercise: The ballast required to reach the minimum weight can be arranged in different positions in the car to achieve the best possible weight distribution. The cars center of gravity, which influences the dynamic behavior, was reduced by more than ten percent during this period. Notable: Both targets were achieved without compromising the crucial torsional stiffness of the chassis. The aerodynamic characteristics of the different A4 generations have also improved considerably. In motorsport the ratio between air resistance and downforce aerodynamic efficiency is important. It was improved by more than 20 percent.

The Audi A4 DTM was improved significantly since 2004

An Audi DTM driver squad has never been so young

Audi has changed its DTM driver line-up significantly compared to last year by adding three newcomers and initiating two cockpit reshuffles: Only four drivers Mattias Ekstrm, Oliver Jarvis, Miguel Molina and Timo Scheider sit in the same cockpits as 2010. The average age of the driver squad sinks by half-a-year to 27 before the start of the season. The Audi DTM squad has never been so young. The four Audi A4 DTM of 2008 vintage entered by Audi Sport Team Phoenix and Audi Sport Team Rosberg have new drivers at the wheel: The two newcomers Filipe Albuquerque(P) and Edoardo Mortara (I/F) fly the flag for the Rosberg team from Neustadt an der Weinstrae. Both drivers switch from formula cars to touring car cockpits. Rahel Frey (CH) has also primarily driven formula cars in her career up to now. At Phoenix Racing the Swiss is new team mate to Martin Tomczyk who also competes for the team from Meuspath for the first time. Mike Rockenfeller (D) takes Tomczyks place at Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. The Le Mans winner from last year qualified for promotion as best Audi driver of year-old car in the 2010 season. Oliver Jarvis (GB) completes his second season for the Kempten squad. Also Mattias Ekstrm (S) and Timo Scheider (D), who have both won the DTM twice already, race as before for Hans-Jrgen Abts team. In their latest generation cars they once again spearhead Audis challenge for championship honors. Miguel Molina (E), best rookie in the DTM in his debut season in 2010, drives an Audi A4 DTM from 2008 for the Allgu based team.

Audi factory driver Filipe Albuquerque (P)

The Portuguese contests the 2011 DTM season as one of three newcomers at Audi. The 25-year old talent impressed Audi at a driver trial. His classic career path led him from karts into national and international entry-level formula classes and via the GP2 series into Formula 1 as test driver for Red Bull and Toro Rosso. This season he races in a touring car for the first time in his career, but not for the first time in an Audi. In 2009 and 2010 he contested the Italian GT Championship in an Audi R8 LMS and finished last year as runner-up. Shortly afterwards he went on to beat Sebastian Vettel and Sbastien Loeb in the Race of Champions.

Audi factory driver Mattias Ekstrm (S)

Mattias Ekstrm is the most successful Audi driver in the DTM: Since 1990 when the brand got involved for the first time in the touring car race series nobody else has amassed 14 race wins, a total of 48 podium finishes and two championship titles. With 482 championship points he has a margin of more than 160 points over his closest team mate. However, he is not only fast in a DTM cockpit: Whoever beats Michael Schumacher twice in the Race of Champions also proves his versatility on other terrain. The Swiss fulfills a dream with her move into DTM. Following initial success in karting and a move up to formula racing people began to sit up and take notice in 2009 in Germany in the Formula 3 Cup: A win and four podium positions in a male dominated entry-level series were a remarkable achievement. A first trial with Audi in 2007 was followed by a second chance at the end of 2010 which she fully exploited: The Swiss prevailed and was awarded a cockpit in Audi Sport Team Phoenix. The 2011 season is a key season for Oliver Jarvis: An extremely strong debut year in the DTM with an Audi back in 2008 and an excellent 2009 season including two podium results in a year-old car was followed by a 2010 season in which he did not perform as well as expected. Newly recruited into Abt Sportslines championship winning team a fourth place at the Norisring remained his best result of the year. He knows that he is better, his team and Audi also know it. The Audi drivers

Audi factory driver Timo Scheider (D)

Timo Scheider was the best Audi driver in the DTM for the third season in succession last year. The season nevertheless went disappointingly: Fourth in the standings for the 2008 and 2009 championship winner was anything but a dream result. In the second half of the season his form improved significantly, victory from 15th on the grid at Adria remains a sensational result for both team and driver. The direction for 2011 is clear: Together with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline Timo Scheider, who lives with girlfriend Jessica Hinterseer in Lochau, Austria, would want to fight for the title as he did in previous seasons.

A new year, a new dawn: After a decade and 103 DTM races with the Abts the Bavarian competes with a new team Audi Sport Team Phoenix for the first time in his DTM career. As a result, the experienced campaigner faces an entirely different task this season: With a year-old car it is principally no longer about overall victories, instead he enjoys number 1 status within his team and can guide team mate Rahel Frey through the pitfalls of the DTM. Martin Tomczyk is in a relationship with Christina Surer and lives in north-west Switzerland in Aesch close to Basel.

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline

Abt Sportsline GmbH, based in Kempten in the Allgu, is the worlds leading tuner and refiner of vehicles from the Volkswagen Group and one of Germanys most successful racing teams. Abt Sportsline is involved in touring car racing since 1996 always with Audi. The first great achievement was winning the STW championship in 1999 with Christian Abt. Since 2000 the team starts in the DTM originally as customer team with the Abt Audi TT-R, since 2004 as Audi factory team with the A4 DTM. The team has already won the DTM title five times with and for Audi, and in 2007, 2008 and 2009 claimed a hat-trick in the process. Some 50 employees look after the five race cars. The motorsport program is, however, not only limited to the DTM. In 2011, Abt Sportsline starts the ADAC GT Masters with the Audi R8 LMS as defending champions and contests the Nrburgring 24 Hours. In addition, Abt again carries out the Scirocco Cup technical support for Volkswagen. Last but not least Hans-Jrgen Abts son Daniel is regarded as one of Germanys brightest budding talents.

Audi Sport Team Phoenix

As one of three Audi factory teams, Audi Sport Team Phoenix starts the 2011 DTM season with a completely new driver line-up. Under the guidance of Team Boss Ernst Moser about 20 employees are in action at DTM races to support the Audi A4 DTM of new arrival Martin Tomczyk and newcomer Rahel Frey. The team, based in the Meuspath business park alongside the Nrburgring, has competed as factory team in the DTM constantly since 2000. When the outfit was founded in 1999 it competed in the STW championship with two Audi A4 quattro. In parallel to its DTM program the squad also competed in the 24 hours Nrburgring and claimed overall victory in 2000 and 2003. For its tenth anniversary in 2009 the outfit won two important titles with the Audi R8 LMS. For the 2011 season Phoenix Racing once again plans an extensive program with the R8 LMS in parallel to DTM.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg

Keke Rosberg, Formula 1 World Champion in 1982, established his own race team at the end of 1994 which has since made a name for itself in touring car and singleseater racing. Winning the German Formula3 Championship with Gary Paffett in 2002 is one of the outstanding victories. Young Formula 1 star Nico Rosberg also made his first steps in motorsport in his fathers team. The team guided by Arno Zensen and with its headquarters in Neustadt an der Weinstrae was active during the 1990s in the old DTM already. Drivers at that time included Klaus Ludwig and HansJoachim Stuck. Team Rosberg was also involved in the new DTM from the very beginning. In 2005 the squad concentrated solely on singleseater racing before returning to the DTM as Audi factory team in 2006. Twenty three employees support Audi Sport Team Rosberg in the 2011 DTM.

The DTM

Winning concept with great future

When the DTM was newly established for the 2000 season those responsible proved to be courageous and possess great vision: Contrary to all international trends the responsible committees devised regulations that permitted equally spectacular and safe race cars, opened the path to cost-effective engines through long service lives and with standard components scotched a technical escalation in various areas (propshafts, gearboxes, brakes and tires). In an economically strained environment the DTM reacted by introducing another intelligent step: Technical development is frozen since 2009, however, the sport remains just as exciting as before but with lower costs. This proven system is replaced in 2012 by technical regulations which will set entirely new safety standards internationally.

Open and packed paddocks are a DTM trademark

Fans are the focus of attention With all due progress the series has never forgotten its roots: Since 1984 the DTM epitomizes accessible sport open paddocks for the fans, fair admission prices, autograph sessions with the stars and, in the meantime, a view of the teams at work during a pit walk through the pit lane. An attractive supporting program comprised of other races and concerts in the pit lane attracts large crowds. Positive and broad public awareness The DTM once again achieved great public awareness: 62,318 fans visited the races; a total of 685,500 spectators followed the DTM races at trackside. An average of 1.2million motorsport fans followed the races broadcast on TV screens by ARD. Series with German roots and international impact The DTM has its roots in Germany and has for years now a calendar of great international flair. This year races in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Spain and a return to Austria are on the agenda. Seven events in Germany, including the inaugural show race at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, remain the core events.

Mike Rockenfeller The atmosphere at the opening race is always something very special. You see all the fans again for the first time at the famous Hockenheim Motodrom. Big questions are dominated by sporting issues: New car, new team how do you compare? The long track layout is particularly challenging. For example, year after year you try to find the line in the Sachs Kurve. I dont believe anybody has found the ideal line. Turn 1 is also very spectacular. You can enter very quickly, but it is very bumpy where the kerbs are. You have to be very courageous. You have to exit the second corner perfectly to be fast along the Parabolica. The best overtaking opportunity is before the hairpin and in sight of the large grandstand in the second part of the track.

Timo Scheider In my opinion Zandvoort is the most challenging track on the calendar. There is every type of corner; its as if they were made for a DTM car: extremely quick sections through which you feel the aerodynamic downforce, slow corners, and also kerbs which you have to drive across hard. The second third of the track has been resurfaced more recently than the rest of the track. When you arrive at the slower corners in the final third of the track you have to be careful not to overdrive the car and lose time. Traditionally the best overtaking place is at the end of the start-finish straight braking for Tarzanbocht. An issue that only exists at Zandvoort is the wind from the North Sea and the sand from the dunes. The combination of both makes it difficult to predict track conditions. All winners since 2001

Martin Tomczyk I raced three times at Spielberg. The circuit was very picturesque and rural. I always felt at home there. It was a great track. Then the reconstruction stage came during which it was never sure whether the circuit would survive. Luckily its on the calendar again. Its great to be going back there again. Im particularly looking forward to the challenging circuit layout. The altitude differences were something special beforehand. Itll be fantastic to drive through the first corner and to look up the long straight all the way to the second corner. There used to be a church behind it I hope its still there. You could even see cows there. There were more than enough photo opportunities! Its great fun to drive through such a picturesque landscape. All winners since 2001

Mike Rockenfeller We race at a state-of-the-art facility in the Lausitz. Its enormous, which is why you dont really notice the great crowds of people. The fans there are very faithful to the DTM. This modern circuit is very safe for us drivers, and the wide pit lane give the teams advantages while working. I have good memories of last year when I was best Audi driver there. The low grip offered by the track surface is very noticeable. The braking and mechanical grip for traction is particularly important there. The aerodynamic set-up is also important in the long righthand corner in the second part of the circuit. You can overtake after this corner, and also under braking for the following left-hand corner as well as after the startfinish line. All winners since 2001

Edoardo Mortara The atmosphere at this historical venue is simply incomparable at a motorsport event like the DTM. Because the fans can sit in the middle we quite literally drive around them a very unusual but great feeling. The track surface is very special: Normal roads and car parks mean that the grip levels differ enormously. It is also quite bumpy. It is one of the best tracks for overtaking on the calendar: You can attack out of the slip stream going into turn 1 and also before the final corner. I have fond memories of the track. In my debut Formula 3 year in 2007 I finished third, last year I won the race on Saturday.

For once its not just about points and race driving, but also about having fun, about an event in the city center and about other entertainment such as the appearance of musicians. The spectacle DTM expands yet again, and this in such a small, tightly packed melting pot! If the arena is full it will certainly be a fabulous atmosphere. Im looking forward to it and only need 40 minutes to drive here from my hometown. It will certainly be something new again, never before seen in the DTM. The tight and twisty circuit will be a surprise for all of us. Everybody is already interested in it, how it should work, since it will be an entirely new experience with our cars.

Rahel Frey The first corner is special. Braking is important; the compression in this corner is something that Im only aware of at the Nrburgring. Its important to take as much momentum as possible at this point. A double-left follows. You have to be patient here as its easy to overdrive the car if you want too much. The circuit short cut, which is off camber, follows afterwards. After a left and a right corner the track then heads towards a fast curve that is followed by a chicane which slows us down. Ill have to attack the kerbs in the chicane with the DTM car. In Formula 3 a lot is asked of the tires on this track. Im intrigued to see whether this phenomenon is also apparent in a DTM car. My smooth driving style should help me at the Nrburgring. I really like the track. All winners since 2000

Oliver Jarvis Brands Hatch is the shortest track on the calendar, but it is also very technical and extremely difficult to achieve a perfect lap. There arent many corners, but every small mistake costs you dearly because the margins in qualifying are so small. Often only thousandths of a second separate us. Brands Hatch is one of my favorite tracks and Paddock Hill bend is one of best corners in the world. When you come over the crest you cant see the apex. The track then drops away. You have to exit this corner very cleanly if you are to have any chance of attacking under braking in the uphill section before Druids. This is the best point to overtake. The spectators can see almost every corner from the grandstands.

Filipe Albuquerque I won the last time I raced at Oschersleben in a junior series. The track is very technical and large number of long bends turns 1, 3 and 4 are very challenging. The chicane is difficult because you have to be able to assess exactly how to drive over the kerbs. Itll certainly be totally different in a DTM car than before with a formula car. The tarmac was very gentle to the tires on my race car when Ive driven there, but it can be totally different in touring car racing. Overtaking is very difficult around this track. The first and the sixth corner are probably most suitable corners to attack, and not forgetting the entry to the S on the back straight. If you make a small mistake you are quickly overtaken yourself.

Miguel Molina I really hope to be able to welcome lots of spectators as there is such a fantastic atmosphere at this track. As a driver the most unusual feature is the anti-clockwise driving direction the majority of the tracks run in exactly the other direction. The first and eighth corners are particularly fast, while the braking points at the second and last corner are very important. Overtaking is most likely in the final corner, maybe also in the second corner. I have good memories of my home race because of the great battle I had with Gary Paffett last year. I learnt a huge amount, which was also of great benefit throughout the rest of the season.

Mattias Ekstrm Coming to Hockenheim in the fall always gives you a feeling of being at the finale. Since Hockenheim is the track that we race at twice a year, I know it like the back of my hand. Every bump, every stone and all the kerbs are implanted in my memory. To a large extent the track is distinctly fast, which does, however, have a few slow corners like those in the Motodrom. Anybody wanting to see overtaking should sit somewhere in the middle sector of the track. Spectators enjoy a unique atmosphere in the Motodrom. This section is also very emotional for the drivers. I always connect great moments with Hockenheim: In 2004 I arrived as champion; in 2007 I left Hockenheim as champion. Its obviously a great feeling.

History: Audi in the DTM

Audis winning history in the DTM

Rally cars, Pikes Peak hillclimb, US race cars, Le Mans sports cars or touring cars: Wherever Audi has competed drivers have celebrated victories and championships in the sign of the four rings. Audi is involved as factory for more than 30 years, the success story in the DTM started with the V8 quattro 21 years ago. Legendary V8 era Audi cleans up big time with the large V8 quattro: In 1990 and 1991, the first two years, the championship title went to Ingolstadt courtesy of Hans-Joachim Stuck and Frank Biela. The 309 kW (420 hp) V8 engines and four-wheel drive quattro were the combination to beat. The Limousine

celebrated 19 single race wins before Audi withdrew in 1992. Intermezzo with the TT-R Following Audis temporary withdrawal the four rings were represented by team Abt Sportsline in the DTM between 2000 and 2003. Laurent Aiello pulled off the feat of winning the 2002 title for the private team. Four titles for the A4 DTM Audi has put its trust in the A4 DTM since returning to the DTM in the 2004 season. It has won the title four times in seven years and is the most successful DTM touring car of this era as a result. Mattias Ekstrm won the title in 2004 and 2007; Timo Scheider followed suit in 2008 and 2009. As a consequence Audi was also the first manufacturer to celebrate a hat-trick after winning three consecutive DTM championship titles. Prior to the 2011 season the A4 DTM has scored 27 of the 54 race victories claimed by Audi in the DTM.

Timo Scheider is credited with two championship titles in 2009 he successfully defended the title he won the previous year
