Audi Sport Customer Racing Booklet (English, 2011)
R8 LMS and TT RS
Audi MediaInfo
Foreword
Audi expands its customer racing program: While the R8LMS proved extremely effective during its first two years of competition and recorded 64 race victories and seven championship titles in the hands of customer teams, the quattro GmbH is busy testing the next customer racing car around the Nrburgring: the TT RS. The compact Coup rounds off the model range from 2012 and will be developed logically between now and then in order to be as successful as the R8 LMS. In addition to our customers dedicated programs with the R8 LMS, three factory supported events form the highlight: the endurance races at Bathurst (AUS), around the Nrburgring (D) and at Spa (B). Contained in this booklet is all the basic information about customer racing for the 2011 season.

Audi in customer racing
In Belgium (left) the R8 LMS celebrated a second successive championship title in 2010, while Csar Campanio/Joo Figueiredo (right) together clinched the Portuguese and Spanish GTChampionships
Audi has also reorganized its customer racing activities. For the 2011 season quattro GmbH took over the technical development, sales and marketing and the technical support of worldwide customer and importer teams. At the beginning of February a further improved version of the Audi R8 LMS celebrated its premiere with a one-two finish at Bathurst. With the great European endurance classics the Nrburgring 24 Hours (June) and the Spa 24 Hours in Belgium (July) two factory events, supported by quattro GmbH, are in preparation.
During the 2011 season almost 120 races are scheduled by customers in 17 race series worldwide and at famous single events. So, the best possible base for the R8 LMS to write yet another successful chapter this year in Audis young customer racing history.

Efficiency and sustainability
Close transfer between sport and production line benefits the end-user
An essential basis for motorsport at Audi is the benefit for the end-user. Motorsport was and is a medium for Audi to develop technologies with a promising future, stresses Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. In this way rally and racing cars, which always also contained technologies of direct benefit for the customer, have been developed for more than 30 years in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Example 1: The four-wheel drive system quattro, which was developed for competition in the World Rally Championship, was introduced in 1982 into large-scale production. To start the 1990s Audi also proved the superiority of this powertrain system in the DTM. To this day customers benefit from the actual dynamic handling advantages and not only on snow and ice. Example 2: In material technology field, motorsport enjoys the advantage of being able to test components manufactured in low quantities from exotic materials without being subjected to the cost pressures found in large-scale production. Audi initially introduced aluminum to engine and suspension design in rallying at the beginning of the 1980s, before the light metal found favor in largescale production. Even carbon-fiber three decades ago still an exotic material in race cars like the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am and used in many places in the Audi A4 DTM today is now produced for road cars within the concern.

Customer racing center and services
Development, marketing and distribution of the Audi R8 LMS is the responsibility of quattro GmbH since 2011
A dedicated customer racing center cares exclusively for customer interests (above). The Audi R8 LMS is assembled in Heilbronn-Biberach (below)
2011: On behalf of Audi, Abt Sportsline in Kempten and Nova Engineering in Japan are permitted to carry out all maintenance and service work on customer race cars. As a result, quattro GmbH shifts core activities in the aftermarket field to two expert and renowned companies with decades of experience and, in doing so, establishes the first bases in Central Europe and in the Asian Pacific region. While these structures were initially established exclusively for the Audi R8 LMS, motorsport customers of the TT RS will benefit from the comprehensive service range provided by the quattro GmbH and its service partners from the 2012 season onwards.

Audi R8 LMS
The Audi R8 LMS finished first and second at Bathurst. The set-up was optimized and improved again this season
Subject to restrictor size the power ranges between 365and 412 kW (496560 PS). The power unit originates from the production line and remains largely unchanged. Audi achieves unrivalled running times as a result. After the first two years of the customer racing program Audi uses an engine in a test car which has already completed more than 25,000 kilometers. R8 LMS customers are also delighted having made similar experiences: Several teams have already spooled off more than 20,000 kilometers with the first power unit. For the high and long-lasting loads encountered during 2 4hour races quattro GmbH has commissioned a special race clutch. It is lighter than the standard module, thus reducing the rotating masses which in turn relieve the gearbox. The sequential six-speed gearbox continues to be operated via steering wheel mounted paddles.
The improved gearbox oil circulation helps durability. The mounting and lubrication of the angle drive on the differential was optimized. At the first event, the Bathurst 12 Hours in February 2011, the modifications immediately proved their value: These heavily loaded components wore measurably less and therefore last longer. These modifications can now also flow into the customer cars after final approval by the FIA or respective championship organizers.

resources
Certain areas of the Audi R8 LMS suspension have also been modified by quattro GmbH. The engineers developed a new spring-damper set-up. Customers also benefit from the companys resources and the traditional knowledge transfer between production and sport long since established at Audi: The modified configurations are tested and verified on a state-of-the-art seven post dynamic test rig in the Technical Development (TE) of AUDI AG. Tires from development partner and supplier Michelin guarantee perfect contact with the track again this year. Improved once again in many important areas, the Audi R8 LMS competes in this configuration in customer racing events worldwide and also the factory supported endurance classics in Bathurst, at the Nrburgring and at Spa.

Audi TT RS
the class 2 to 2.5 liters, produces 250 kW (340 PS) in the production car. Its power is increased by 29 kW to 279 kW (380 PS) for motorsport use. Crankshaft and valve train are standard components as are the crankcase and cylinder heads. The power increase compared to the production line unit results primarily from the ECU being reprogrammed and also a racing exhaust system. A new cooling system is installed to cope with the high thermal demands. For this purpose the motorsport project benefits from the
companys resources: Water and oil coolers originate from the Groups production component system, only the intercooler is a new development. The Audi TT RS is equipped with permanent four-wheel drive in standard form. Since the majority of racing series prohibit four-wheel drive, Audi decided to design and build what is arguably the worlds most powerful front wheel drive race car. Perfect technology transfer is implemented in the transmission system. The sequential six-speed gearboxs pneumatic shift activation control is adapted from the Audi R8 LMS as is the pneumatic shift hardware itself. While the three-plate sinter metal clutch is a pure racing module, the driveshafts are assembled entirely from production line components. The outer joints originate from the Q7 V12 TDI. A mechanical limited slip differential distributes power between the two wheels.
The Audi TT RS is tested around the Nrburgring Nordschleife
The
support the higher moments of front wheel drive. The four link rear suspension was also modified for racing. Race antiroll bars are used on both axles. The dynamic change of the anti-roll bars properties in bump and rebound means that the component has the effect of a third spring on each axle and specifically influences the cars spring characteristics.
The large aerodynamic components on the TT RS body catch the eye
The electric power assisted steering was carried over from the production Audi TT RS and the software correspondingly modified; steering column and steering wheel are from the Audi R8 LMS. The suspension was completely redesigned. Steel sub frames, wishbones and aluminum uprights were designed as motorsport components while retaining the principle of the front and rear suspension. The TT RS braking system also benefits from big brother R8 LMS: The complete brake system was adopted for the front axle, the rear brake discs originate from the TT production component system. The front rims found on the GT3 sports car are used at the front and rear on the TT RS. The Audi TT RS body is equipped with a roll-cage which was subject to a complete computerized FEA. It is welded to the cars rear steel structure and bolted and bonded to the front aluminum sheets. The roof and side panels of the outer body skin are, like the production line counterparts, metal. Bathurst (AUS)
At the beginning of February two Audi R8 LMS started the Bathurst 12 Hours. The endurance race admits GT3 sports cars again since the start of the 2011 season. In the first quattro GmbH factory-supported event of the year Audi race experience Team Joest celebrated a one-two finish. Challenge down under Bathurst is regarded as the home of Australian motorsport and is acknowledged around the world as being the fifth continents most famous track. The 6.2 kilometer track winds its way up and down the 174 meter Mount Panorama through a series of 23 corners. Extreme sequences of corners and a lack of run-off areas give the circuit its character. Nrburgring (D)
The Audi R8 LMS was already on the grid twice for the Nrburgring 24 Hours. On its debut in 2009 the R9 LMS won the GT3 class and finished an excellent second overall in the hands of Team Abt Sportsline. In the 2010 season the Phoenix team took class victory in the GT3 category. In 2011 Abt and Phoenix compete as factory teams in the Eifel. Green hell as eternally youthful classic The Nrburgrings Nordschleife commands unique status worldwide. In the volcanic Eifel regions topography the legendary track has the character of a gigantic roller coaster with an altitude difference of 300 meters per lap. With a distance of 25 kilometers per lap contact between team and car via radio connection or television pictures remains patchy. Data and facts about the Nrburgring

In 2009 team Phoenix went to Spa with an Audi R8 LMS for the first time. The car, which did not comply with the GT3 regulations, won a special class and finished third overall. Last year, United Autosports was the best Audi team taking third and fourth in the GT3 class and ninth and tenth overall. For 2011 Phoenix and the W Racing Team form the factory line-up.
