Many injuries to children can be avoided if parents and caregivers are educated or reminded of some very important and easy steps to keep their children safe.

Sadly, preventable injuries are the greatest killer of kids 14 and under. In Washtenaw and Livingston counties weve had our share of preventable injuries to children said Amber Kroeker, Safe Kids Huron Valley coordinator and Injury Prevention health educator for Mott Childrens Hospital. Thats why Safe Kids Huron Valley is joining Safe Kids Michigan and Safe Kids Worldwide to celebrate Safe Kids Day on Saturday. For example, in Livingston and Washtenaw counties, Safe Kids Huron Valley hosts free car seat checkup events to inform parents on how to properly install their childs safety seat in their vehicle. Other events are focused on educating parents on infant safe sleep habits; fire, water, and home safety; Walk to School Day; poison prevention; sports safety, and more.

Great Lakes Zoological Society president and co-founder Mark Creswell shows visitors around the World of Discovery. He explains that lizards and other reptiles have very specific nutritional needs, and some of the reptiles at the little-known local zoo have permanent disfigurements because of poor nutrition in their former homes. The poets are coming. The poets are coming. OK, so its no British invasion, but a group of Michigan writers will blitz into town Saturday for some literary engagement and entertainment. The action unfolds from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at the downtown Ann Arbor District Library as the pack of poets Jack Ridl, Chris Dombrowski, M.L. Liebler, Keith Taylor and Francine J.
