REEL REVIEWS
Sometimes you go see a movie and think: What in the name of Scorsese is going on here? It can be confusing, it can be alienating, and it can even be infuriating. No Country for Old Men is a film that begins this way. I was concerned I would soon be suffering from the aforementioned affliction, but luckily the sensation passed. I remained puzzled, but blissfully so. I was riveted, transfixed, but yet conflicted. How
could a film be so slowly paced, so pensive, and yet make me sit at the edge of my seat? In fact, I couldnt help but draw connections between 1996s strange and critically acclaimed Fargo. Ill refrain from relishing my incredible eye for film authorship, and just say that No Country for Old Men is written and directed by the Coen brothers. They rocketed to super stardom when Fargo was released (it was nominated for a whopping seven Oscars, and won two). While they have had hits and misses over the past decade, this most recent project appears to be a hit. It
is garnering Oscar buzz yet again for the dynamic duo, and rightfully so. To me, it is Fargo goes west: a simple, small town police force is met with a psychopathic killer, and a regular guy gets caught up in the middle. The story, adapted from a novel by the great Cormac McCarthy, takes place near the border between Texas and Mexico around 1980. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam veteran out for

a hunting trip in the desert who stumbles upon the brutal scene of a drug deal gone wrong, and an unattended case of $2 million. The film is, as Ive mentioned, shockingly restrained. It is quite easy to get carried away with subject matter such as the West, murder, drug deals and especially psychopathic killers. In fact, I would argue that two-thirds of all terrible movies are about one or more than one
of those things. However, the audience does not feel manipulated. Grotesque slayings are juxtaposed with beautiful, long, reflective vistas. The camera work is creative but does not distract from the story; rather, it compliments it perfectly. This film, already nominated for a Palme dOr at Cannes, should be appearing on the Oscar ballot in a few months time; make sure that in February you arent out of the loop.
