Saw V is basically Saw: A Retrospective

In the spirit of Halloween, I checked out what is now becoming a reluctant tradition: the newest Saw flick. Picking up where the last four left off, Saw V follows the events after the death of serial killer Jigsaw. Spoiler alert: there is no way for me to talk about the film without revealing somewhat explosive plot points from the previous films, so proceed with caution. After Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) dies of a long battle with cancer, the world believes that his reign of terror has finally stopped. Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is painted the hero, while FBI Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) is seriously injured and reassigned after the bloodbath. Little do they know that Hoffman, in fact, was Jigsaws second and beefier of ideas, and quick. Its basically Saw: A Retrospective. The story of the actual film is then reduced to one trap, one small group of people, and a very limited back story. The other four flicks, the first and second in particular, dedicated huge chunks of time to the history of the characters, the connection they share, and how they relate to Jigsaw. However, the five people locked in a room together in his posthumous trap all are connected, but its addressed for about thirty seconds. Oh you did that? I did this! Thats the connection! Dude, totally. Okay so lets cut our arms in half. Cool. Of course Saw was never about the screenplay, its about the traps. And in this flick, they are more of the same. While I would love to say that they blew my mind and killed people in new and exciting ways (which Im definitely a fan of), its starting to get a little old. People are cut in half; I cringed, closed my eyes, but was my mind blown? No. My lunch was though. The director of the films has been shuffled yet again, and it is now helmed by David Hackl. The change of director is definitely evident, and not in a good way. The original style that made me fall in love with the series is diluted. All these things being said, I still somehow enjoy these films. Its beginning to boggle my mind because theyre not even popular or innovative anymore. In fact, it was like pulling teeth (Jigsaw style) to get people to even come with me to see it. Even around Halloween, go figure. Being released alongside High School Musical 3 doesnt help Saw Vs chances either, but if you want to be grossed out before Halloween, check it out (but avoid large meals beforehand).

My main concern upon entering the theatre was that, despite having seen all four films at least once, I couldnt for the life of me remember any details. This is a downside to the series; however the film attempts to compensate for this by recapping the events of the previous films. This allows those who arent familiar with the series to remain in the loop, however, it also shows that the writers are running out
