St.

Bede School
May 16, 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians: Congratulations and well done to all who supported the Recycle Rally project collecting cans and bottles this past year. As was announced at the Spring Concert, St. Bede was recently certified as the winner of the $25,000 first prize. Under the rules of the contest, and in keeping with the spirit of the recycling philosophy, the money must be used for earthfriendly and energy conservation purposes. We have submitted our wish list for approval to the agents of PepsiCo, one of the sponsors of the program, and will publish what they approve in the next bulletin. The list includes mostly classroom technology and St. Bede advancement materials, as well as energy-efficient lighting for parts of the building. The company will present us with the prize next Wednesday, May 22 at 10:00 A. M. All members of the greater St. Bede community are invited to attend in the gym but everyone present must sign a photo release for PepsiCo to be included. If you didnt get one at the concert, copies will be available at the door on Wednesday. Students also must have a PepsiCo release (the one we have on file for the school isnt sufficient for their purposes), so only those whose parents have signed for them will be admitted to the gym for the ceremony (which is expected to take about 20 minutes). The Spring Concert was especially successful this year. I hope all parents were able to attend. Its amazing the talent we have in all our classrooms -- and while the concert is a focus point of their achievements, much more is in evidence in classes throughout the year. The singing and choreography were memorable and in keeping with the high standards that our music director, Molly Thompson has set in recent years. Congratulations to Ms. Thompson for a job well done. Summer School. Summer is almost here and for the first time in recent memory, St. Bede is offering options for summer academics. See the information later in this bulletin. The plan is modest this year, but if successful, more time and offerings will available in future summers. For parent convenience, the Extended Day Program (EDP) will also be available during the four weeks of the program. Bullying and cell phones. Summer offers many advantages for fun and activities not available during the school year. But the kind of supervision that is natural during school is also on a summer schedule. The literature on bullying tells us that more and more bulling activity is moving from the actual world to the virtual world. (This is partly because electronic communications are harder to supervise.) The next bulletin will go into more detail, but preparation for summer should also involve supervision for the various kinds of digital communication highlighting cell phone accounts, XboxLive and other game consoles, and social media in all its variations. There is no substitute for an open, face-to-face, honest talk with children about their use of cellphones and other digital media. And finally, Congratulations to the new and renewal members who have agreed to accept seats on the 2013-2014 St. Bede Athletic Board. The time and energy they put into leadership isnt always visible from the outside, but a successful athletic program depends on their behind-the-scene work. Athletic Director Assistant Athletic Director Treasurer/Communications Concessions Director Secretary Fund Raising Jim Jekot Shane Farrell Judi Payne Greg Benyak Denise Brookins Lisa Johnson

Head Coaching Assignments will be announced in the May 30 Bulletin. Best Wishes as the conclusion of the school year unfolds, Charles Pinto

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM FAIRMAN

Dear Parents, On Monday, May 6th, a Canadian goose died at the entrance to the parking lot on Route 59. While I did not witness its demise, its location right next to the drive would lead one to believe it was struck and killed by a motorist. This bothered me for a couple of reasons: 1. A goose is a large and slow moving creature when not flying. If it was hit by a car, one would presume that the motorist was driving too fast or was too distracted to notice its presence. 2. The Canada goose is a favorite bird of mine (I know, people don't like the "gifts" they leave!). They mate for life and it is nesting season. Fred Konopasek, our Business Manager, has suggested speed bumps for our parking lot and I agree with him wholeheartedly. Despite the frequent requests for parents to slow down when dropping off or picking up their children from school or RE, I observe too many parents driving way too fast for a small parking lot with frequent pedestrians. A goose lost its life today... when will a small child be killed by a motorist who was in too big a hurry to slow down? Fr. Tim Fairman

These two programs have been a HUGE financial and environmental success for our community but due to changing space requirements at the school and major changes dictated by the two programs we need to adjust what we are collecting. Our total success will be highlighted in bulletins in the weeks to come.

Effective NOW, our Recycle Rally (cans and bottle) program is closed. This is a school year program and the contest ended April 30th. We are no longer collecting cans and bottle so please recycle what items you have through your home recycling program. Effective NOW, our TerraCycle program is nearly closed. The items below are the ONLY items we will continue to recycle for money at St. Bede. Please read carefully and ONLY turn in those items to the collection bins. If an item is not on this list, please do NOT turn it in.

ELECTRONIC WASTE! Electronic waste or e-waste is a HUGE money maker! Going forward, this is going to be the cash recycling program that St. Bede is going to rally behind to earn our fundraising dollars. If our community gets behind the e-waste program as it did for TerraCycle and Recycle Rally, St. Bede can easily earn $500 a WEEK or more! If you have enjoyed the numerous improvements St. Bede recycling fundraising has been able to make to our school, please start saving your own toner and ink jet cartridges as well as old cell phones and laptop computers. Our program take ANY brand and ANY size of ewaste working or not! Collection goes beyond your own homes. Several business donate their e-waste to St. Bede and with some simple networking by ALL of us we can collect even more. Ask your friends, family members, employers, neighbors and any business you have a familiar relationship with to also collect their e-waste for us. Networking did work in a gigantic way with Recycle Rally and if we all start networking now for e-waste, the CASH will come flooding through our doors.

We are in the home stretch before our children and families start summer vacation. Please remember to keep turning in your Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education. These labels DO expire so please do not hoard them for a potential future contest. An expired label is worth nothing in real life value and contest value. Together St. Bede families and friends have collected $4,409.39 in Box Tops CASH in the 20122013 school year, GREAT JOB!

Draft Uniform Section from Parent/Student Handbook: (revised 5-16-13) DRESS CODE (the final code will be published with the Handbook in August) For transition to 2013-2014, white or red polo shirts can be worn with the girls jumper in grades K-4. And the navy polo can be worn by any student if the fit and condition is appropriate. At St. Bede, the uniform dress code promotes a positive atmosphere that reduces competition and directs attention to learning and growing in an environment that supports school values. The staff of St. Bede relies on parents to be the first monitors of the student dress code. Uniforms are to be worn from the first day of school until the end of the last day, unless otherwise directed. Kindergarten Third Grade Girls must wear the uniform jumper from Dennis Uniform with red or white polo shirt or navy blue dress pants or shorts (classic chino-style not cargo) with a red polo shirt, short or long-sleeved. They may add a red or blue sweatshirt with the school logo over their school uniform for warmth. Boys must wear navy blue dress pants or shorts (classic chino-style not cargo) with a plain red polo shirt, short or longsleeved. They may add a red or blue sweatshirt with the school logo over their school uniform for warmth. Fourth Grade Girls Girls in the fourth grade have the option of wearing either the uniform jumper OR a uniform skirt from Dennis Uniform with red or white polo shirt. This will allow for a transition from the jumper to the skirt. Dress pants and shorts with a plain red polo, as outlined above, are also permissible for fourth grade girls. They may add a red or blue sweatshirt with the school logo over their school uniform for warmth. Fourth Eighth Grade Girls must wear the uniform skirt from Dennis Uniform or navy blue dress pants or shorts (classic chino-style not cargo) with a red polo shirt, short or long-sleeved. They may add a red or blue sweatshirt with the school logo over their school uniform for warmth. If a skirt becomes too short, then student must wear pants or purchase a new skirt. Boys must wear navy blue dress pants or shorts (classic chino-style not cargo) with a red polo shirt, short or long-sleeved. They may add a red or blue sweatshirt with the school logo over their school uniform for warmth. Additional Uniform Notes: Shoes. All students may wear single-color athletic or dress shoes with the same color shoelaces. Colors allowed for both are white, black, brown, blue or red. A single-color shoe is defined as a single-color top (the sole may be another color). A designer logo of a different color should not dominate. Socks must cover the ankle and be visible at all times: For Girls- White socks; blue or white tights, blue or white knee socks. For Boys- White or navy blue dress socks. Undershirts: If students wear a t-shirt or undershirt under their uniform, it must be solid white without any imprinting. Jewelry: Everyone may wear a watch and/or ONE bracelet. A necklace (religious medal or cross) or a ring may also be worn. Girls may wear a single pair of button earrings or small ring earrings on the ear lobe. No dangling earrings allowed! Boys may not wear earrings. Make up and Nail Polish: Girls may not wear make-up on a regular uniform day. They may wear light make-up on an out-of-uniform day. The only nail polish to be worn is clear and no artificial nails are to be worn.

Maintenance and Fit: Uniforms must fit properly. Pants must be worn at waist level. Jumpers and skirts should not be any higher than 2 inches above the knee and may not be rolled up at the waist. All shirts must remain tucked in. Oversized or tight-fitting clothing are not permitted. A brown or black belt may be worn with uniform pants. All clothing should be labeled with the students name. Uniform clothing must be kept neat and laundered. Torn, stained, or faded uniforms must be replaced or repaired. Boys and Girls Grooming: St. Bede discourages any highlights in the hair; however, if a student has highlights they must be a natural color. Hair must be kept neat, clean, and well-groomed. Boys hair should be no longer than way down the ear on the sides, off the collar in the back, and must be above and not touching the eyebrows in front. Fad hairstyles (i.e. no fauxhawks, etc) or extremes in color are not allowed. Gym Uniforms: Grades K-4 may wear their gym uniforms to school on gym days. However, grades 5-8 must change into their gym uniforms before gym class. The gym uniform, which consists of a T-shirt, shorts or sweatpants, must be purchased through Dennis Uniforms. Clean, non-marking athletic shoes must be worn for gym class. They must tie (slip-ons are not safe for gym class) (Velcro closure sneakers are acceptable for K-2.). Uniforms should be laundered on at least a weekly basis. Gym clothes may not be stored in the locker but taken home and laundered. The gym uniform consists of the following: Navy Blue gym shorts or sweatpants St. Bede logo Gray T-shirt St. Bede logo Navy or red sweatshirt with St. Bede logo White standard socks Clean gym shoes (single color)

Scout Uniforms: Scout uniforms may be worn to school on scout days. Even though our policy is well defined in content, sometimes judgment calls must be made. If your child is not in compliance with the uniform policy, you will be notified by either letter or phone call. In some situations, parents may be asked to bring the needed article of clothing to school. If there is a question, you may contact the office. Decisions and/or judgment calls rest with the administration. NON-UNIFORM DAYS On occasion, all students or a particular grade or unit may be out of uniform. These days are listed on the bulletin calendar or defined in a memo to the parents from a homeroom teacher. Out-of-uniform days will be rare. When not in uniform, students are still expected to dress modestly and respectfully. Casual, clothes should be worn, not jeans, t-shirts or shirts with suggestive, crude, or rude statements, and/or messages. On these days, girls in grades 6-8 may wear light make-up that is tastefully and moderately done. No eye shadow or heavy eye liner, halter and midriff tops, obvious under or oversized clothing. For safety reasons, clogs, Crocs, open back shoes, flip flops, or sandals without an ankle strap, fashion boots, platform shoes, heels (over 1 inch high), Rocket Dog brand shoes, or Heelies are prohibited. Parents are asked to assist in following these guidelines by supervising uniform and other clothing selections made by their child. Please use your parental powers by exerting your positive influence in helping your child make the appropriate choices. If a student is out of uniform according to the above stated policies, he/she will receive a Uniform Notice. The appropriate form must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to school. Students in grades K-8 who receive three Uniform Notices will be barred from classes until the rules are followed. Direct questions to the office, preferably before school begins in August.
