IT is a special day for Deogi Nair as Fiji celebrates the 134th anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers from India. Mrs Nair, who turned 101 Tuesday, hopes to pass on knowledge told to her by her parents indentured labourers from India to her grandchildren. Vellu and Amalu Nair were married in Madras in South India and travelled to Fiji to work under the indenture system. Amalu Nair gave birth to Deogi on May 14, 1912, at Naitonitoni in Navua. Ms Nair said that she was 16 years old when she got married to Chingovinda, who was much older than her. "I didn't go to school as there was none at that time," she said. "I don't know how to read and write." "We lived very near the sea when I got married and everything was very good at that time, as everyone was good to each other. "But there were a lot of cyclones and floods at that time and I still remember the tsunami that hit Fiji in the early 1950s." Ms Nair said she was about 19 or 20 years old when her mother died first followed by her father a few years later. Her husband, who also came to Fiji from India under the indenture system, died in 1973 leaving her to look after their seven daughters. Asked about her long life and her birthday coinciding with Girmit Day, she replied: "It's all through the grace of God and I thank Him for my long life. "I'm very happy that I was born on the day when the first group of indentured labourers came to Fiji from India." Ms Nair had cataract surgery on her eyes some years ago and has a clean medical history. She has no medical problem, has good eyesight and hearing, and is fit

enough to go for afternoon walks in the neighbourhood. "I eat whatever is cooked at home. There is no restriction on my sugar and salt intake, and I like tea with milk a lot." In an interview, she started rolling suki (Fiji tobacco) and said it was something she started smoking before her marriage. "I've never drunk yaqona or alcohol or smoked cigarettes that come in packets. "The only thing I take is suki and it's something that I started before my marriage. I got the habit from my
Deogi Nair brothers and I used to hide it from my parents and smoke. "When I got married, I told my husband that I smoked suki and he can do whatever he wants but I won't leave it," she said with a laugh. Ms Nair said she had fever once and the doctor asked her if she smoked. "I told him straight that I smoke suki only after having my meals and whenever I feel like smoking and the doctor said OK," she said. Her grandson Rakesh Kissun said
the family would celebrate the centenarian's birthday in a small way. "She turned 101 years old and it's her right age because my eldest aunt is nearing 85 years," he said. Ms Nair has seven daughters, 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren, all of whom are alive. "The only thing I want to tell people is to love one another and be good to one another as that's the only way to a lovely future," she said.

Mamanuca Primary School executives in Malolo Island had their prayers answered following the handing over of a fibre boat and an outboard engine by the Office of the Prime Minister. It has been 44 years since the school was established however there had been no boat of their own to transport students from nearby islands to the school in Malolo. School head teacher Moape Rika said it was a historic moment for the school as they had been requesting for a boat over the years but nothing was done. Today is a very historic day not only
for the school but also for the villagers whose children will use the boat, he said. We had been requesting for a boat for a very long time but nothing happened and we would like to thank the Prime Minister and this government for coming to our aid. The school has a roll of 148 students who attend classes from one to eight. The Office of the Prime Minister deputy secretary Edward Tunidau said providing the new fibre boat was governments obligation to ensure that students have access to education without any interruptions.

Fijis national drink kava can be used as a natural treatment by those suffering from anxiety. According to a study by the University of Melbourne, the traditional drink offers a more natural and effective treatment for those who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD). A report said lead researcher Dr Jerome Sarris of the Department of Psychiatry found that the natural alternative could also offer less risk of dependency and less potential for side effects than other options. Dr Sarris said GAD was a complex condition that affected peoples dayto-day lives, and new effective options were needed in order to attempt to reduce the common problem. The eight-week study included 75 GAD patients where they were given Kava or placebo, while their anxiety levels were regularly assessed. The results from showed a significant reduction in anxiety for the Kava group compared to the placebo group.
If this finding is replicated, it may pave the way for simple genetic tests to determine which people may be likely to have a beneficial anxiety-reducing effect from taking Kava, Dr Sarris said. Those in the Kava group were then given tablets twice per day consisting of water-soluble Kava extract taken from peeled rootstock and the results showed no significant differences across the two groups for liver function which had previously been a concern for Kavas medicinal use. In addition to these, there were no adverse reactions that could be attributed to Kava, and no difference in withdrawal or addiction between the groups. Another finding of the study, which is set to be researched in more detail, is that Kava increased womens sex drive compared to those in the placebo group. This is believed to be due to the reduction of anxiety, rather than any aphrodisiac effect.
The Fletcher Road Bailey bridge and walkway after it was officially opened The Vatuwaqa bailey bridge is open. There were smiling faces from motorists, taxi drivers and members of the public when crossing the bridge as their wait came to fruition now they get into Suva City or Nabua a lot faster. The bridge was closed last November by the Fiji Roads Authority for safety reasons because of deteriorating structural conditions. Among the first to across the bridge was taxi driver, Iqbal Khan who operates from Nabua. Thank you Fiji Roads Authority. I am very happy because instead of taking a lot of time to go through Fletcher Road, now I help my passengers get into Suva a lot faster, Mr Khan said. Another taxi driver was Rakesh Kumar of Nasinu. I know everyone is happy. It was worth waiting because now we are safe. We did not know that the old bridge was in a bad condition. Traffic has opened and those using the bridge are safe. Business will be good for me because of passengers along this route, Mr Kumar said. The single-lane bridge operates on traffic lights to allow traffic into two directions from Suva and vice-versa. The roads authoritys chief executive officer, Neil Cook, has offered caution on use of the bridge and for motorists to be patient and alert. My request and advice to motorists is, please be patient. It is not possible to see oncoming traffic due to the height of the structure, please do not be like the taxi we saw today that swung around another vehicle waiting at the red light and started up the bridge, Mr Cook said. Do not drive overloaded heavy vehicles across the bridge. Transport operators are very aware of what loads their trucks can take and they are also aware when they are overloading. We will be asking the Police and LTA to assist us in monitoring the use of the bridge. It would be a great shame if this temporary bridge had to close because of irresponsible operators. The bridges walkway is also open allowing people to cross

FIJI Airways has been crowned top choice among the amazing six airlines of the Pacific Rim that have made it into top 10 this year for its stunning livery. According to Australian Business Traveller, TheDesignAir website (one of their favourite sites where aviation geek meets design chic) has put together a list of this year's top 10 airline liveries. "To crown the amazing six airlines of the Pacific Rim that have made it into our Top 10 liveries this year is the stunning Fiji Airways livery," the TheDesignAir website said. The website said this wonderful 'heritage-bound' national design using pacific tribal patterns and emblems showed a proud cultural image that would stand out at its international destination airports of Sydney, Auckland, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. "It appears as something still exotic, and whilst on a 'Eurowhite fuselage', it could have had the fate of many new liveries, and appear bland and simplistic but it's actually got
a strong logotype, bold tailfin and interesting nacelles that draw the eye all over the well balanced airframe." It further stated that airlines like Fiji Airways showed that inspiring liveries were still being produced today. "What we applaud the most here is the dramatic change from their current image and a purposeful return to its roots. "You don't need to be a plane-spotter to appreciate a great-looking airline livery a stylish paintjob that turns heads at even the most crowded airport." Fiji Airways spokesman Shane Hussein said they were obviously delighted that the new Fiji Airways livery continued to earn accolades. "It's a testament to brilliant work of our artist Makereta Matemosi, whose masi art makes up our new livery as well as the efforts of our own Air Pacific team who worked with her to create this new identity and apply it on our aircraft," Mr Hussein said. Hawaiian Airlines came in the second spot followed by O'hana by Hawaiian, Asiana and Starflyer.
Pathologists around the country can now expect a more conducive learning environment following refurbishment works at the Colonial War Memorial Hospitals pathology lab. The $15,000 refurbishment works is a joint project between the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the CWM hospital. Officially launching the newly renovated pathology lab, CWMH Medical Superintendent, Dr Jemesa Tudravu said that the Ministry of Health was grateful to the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences for upgrading the pathology lab that will allow postgraduate students to use the room for lectures. Over the years pathologists here did not have the appropriate equipment and facilities to assist them with training, Dr Tudravu said.
There is also a room for visiting consultants and new furniture and equipment that will assist the pathologists in adding a bit more to their working environment. FNUs College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Dean, Professor Ian Rouse said that the college was glad to be of assistance as CWM was the main teaching centre for nurses and doctors from the College of Nursing and Medicine. If youre from the Pacific Islands then this is the main hospital where you will learn and its a great learning space for pathologists who are undergoing training, Professor Rouse said. Meanwhile, six pathologists also received certificates of participation for attending the 2013 Pacific Inaugural Pathology Symposium held last month in Suva.

Models show off bridal wear by local designer Hupfeld Hoerder on the first day of the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange at the Intercontinental Fiji Golf and Spa. Fijis wedding market received positive exposure through a bridal fashion show at the opening day of the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange (BFTE) in Natadola. Models sashayed down a catwalk exhibiting a shared showcase of contemporary and traditional bridal wear.
The bridal wear is by local designers Hupfeld Hoerder and Hutch Looney, the Pacific director of California-based Brides magazine. Spectators included BFTE wholesalers, operators and Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa visitors, providing ample exposure for what Mr Looney described as a growing market for the country. Mr Looney has attended every BFTE and the Fiji Tourism Convention before that and produces honeymoon and wedding marketing programs with Air Pacific and Tourism Fiji. When I started working here in 1991, people laughed at the concept of honeymooners from the United States, Mr Looney said. But today for the North America market, they represent about 14 percent of all North American visitors now on their honeymoon. The destination wedding market is just starting to grow for Fiji but the potential is enormous, he said. Mr Hoerder said he merged traditional local fibers such as masi and magimagi with contemporary designers for a more couture look that would also showcase Fijis and its allure. Pooja Natasha of Nadi-based Paradise Brides Fiji said wedding concepts had revolved from traditional church settings to outdoor themes. Many that travel here to get married want the beautiful beach wedding and just recently, we have begun organising waterfall weddings, which is a slight change but shows the changing trends in the market, she noted. The Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange continues.

ONE hundred and ninety-five people have been fined for smoking in public places in the country. And 90 of these people were from the Suva area, says Ministry of Health Tobacco Control Unit officer in charge Aminiasi Tavui. Mr Tavui said the Tobacco Control Regulation 2012 would come into effect from July 1 this year. He said those found smoking in public places would be fined $200 to be paid within 21 days in default of 20 days in imprisonment. "The number of people smoking in public places has decreased to some extent but the number of people smoking in public places will definitely decrease when the Tobacco Control Regulation will be enforced from July 1." Mr Tavui said the Tobacco Control Unit was now creating awareness through stakeholders meeting. These meetings, he said had been completed in the Central and Western divisions with the Northern Division meet scheduled at the end of the week. "This stakeholders meeting will also include restaurant owners, nightclub, pubs and bar owners. "The unit will also continue to carry out surveillance and enforcement duties
around towns, cities and rural areas." He said there were some areas that were not highlighted such as the market area, streets and community halls. "We will make submissions on such areas to be included but it can only be declared smoke-free areas or a nonsmoking area by the Minister of Health. "In Section 43 (1) of the Tobacco Control Regulation 2012, any workplace accessible by the public, any enclosed entrance way, foyer, lobby, stairway, passageway, toilet accessible by the public, any classroom, lecture room or lecture theatre, any area of the shop or retail place accessible by the public, any eating house, any designated no smoking zone in a tavern, bar or nightclub are classified smoke-free areas." Volunteers from the Sydney Adventist Hospitals Health Care Outreach programme with staff of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and one of their patients
There is hope for some Fijians suffering from Rheumatic heart disease. They will have new leases of life when a 50-member team of heart specialists, surgeons, nurses, and technicians from Australia and one from India working round the clock to treat and operate on some of them. They are volunteers from the Sydney Adventist Hospitals Health Care Outreach programme called Operation Open Heart. They started their two-week help in Fiji last Sunday, operating at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. Their co-ordinator, Melanie Windus, said they hoped to treat about 50 patients. These are volunteers from across Australia who work in different hospitals, professionals and experienced who leave behind the comfort of their homes to come and help people here, Mrs Windus said. These are like-minded professionals who want to help others. They are part of the cardiac taskforce working with the theme Working in Partnership to save lives. Patients who will benefit from the visit include 18-year-old Fiji National University student, Tevita Motoni. He is from Welagi Village in Taveuni, Vanua Levu. This sickness has been with me for many years. I cannot do a lot of physical work, cannot play sport and I am sickly most of the time. I have been having regular treatments and take medication, but I am happy that I will be among those treated this week. It will help me live longer and a normal life, Mr Motoni said. Another patient is mother of three, Seini Balaca, 31, of Nausori. She said her biggest worry would soon be over once her operation is over. Every day I fear about my children. They are so dear, and they are in primary school. I am sickly but I always hide the pains. Now I know I will be able to look after my family well, Mrs Balaca said. Surgeon Dr Jayme Bennetts said Rheumatic heart disease was common in Fiji because of the lack of prevention. Rheumatic fever is the biggest problem which damages the heart valves. It is common in Fiji. It can affect anybody, irrespective of age. It damages the valves in the secondary infection because it is not treated early, Dr Bennetts said. He said coughs and cold are among causes of the disease. It can be prevented easily at an early stage by treating coughs and cold early through the use of medication, taking Penicillin every three months for protection. The bug that causes Rheumatic fever damages the heart valves and can be prevented by regular medical checks. Acting Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Meciusela Tuicakau commended the team because they would help save Fijians lives. We appreciate and acknowledge the team which is currently in Fiji. They have been coming to Fiji for about 20 years now. We believe that they provide best treatment to our adults and children who suffer from heart diseases. By doing so, they are improving the quality of lives of our adults and children, Dr Tuicakau said. Operation Open Heart started in Fiji in 1990. This is the 22nd visit and to date they had successfully operated on 695 patients. Their services are free. This year they are helped by the Ministry of Health, Air Pacific, Avis, Vodafone, AusAID, Westpac, FIJI Water, and other local sponsors and business houses. The team also work with local professionals in the form of training and consultancy.

Mystery Over Partly Submerged Fijian Attorney General Ship Announces Next Stage Of Electronic Voter Registration To Commence Next Month
A new phase of Electronic Voter Registration for the 2014 parliamentary election will take place in selected areas of Fiji next month. The Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said EVR would commence again in Naitasiri, Rewa, Ba and Macuata. These are areas identified after the first and second rounds last year as recording a lower proportion of registrations than other parts of the country. Teams from the Elections Office will visit the various areas over a four week period commencing on June 3rd until June 29th. The Attorney-General said the specific schedule would be announced soon and details would be given on radio and television, in the Fiji Sun, and through the Offices toll free number 0800-3316000 and its website www.electionsfiji.org Advertisements in the media will commence later this week. The AG urged all Fijians over the age of 18 who live in the targeted areas and have not yet registered, to do so. Only those who have registered will be able to vote next year so it is obviously important that Fijians take advantage of this phase, he said. The AG also said that those who had already registered would have the opportunity to check their registration details with the various roving teams. We want to ensure that anyone who is eligible to register is registered and to make sure that their details are correct, he said. Authorities are tightlipped on a ship that was partly submerged in the Suva Harbor. The reporter photographed the vessel drifting with its hull facing the Suva foreshore. Questions and calls were made to the Fiji Ports Authority and Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji for clarification
to no avail. Meanwhile, the vessel is believed to be a foreign fishing vessel called MV Rising No. 26. Fiji Police Force chief operations officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, said they had not received any report of any sunken vessel in Suva.

The effects of the shortage of dairy products in New Zealand caused by the drought there is expected to soon trickle down to Fiji as well. Dairy product prices in New Zealand have already gone up by 30 per cent. Nathan Hildebrand, marketing director for CJ Patel Group, the company which now owns Fiji Dairy, said consumers should be aware the prices of imported dairy products would be rising in the next two to three weeks. Good news out of this is with all this, domestic dairy product prices are not going up, he said. Rewa Life UHT milk and Skim Milk remains at existing price and will continue to be the same. The quality of the milk has improved as well as these are now produced with new homogenisers so there are no clotting issues in the milk produced locally. All powdered milk is imported and therefore, this means the price of powdered milk will increase, he said. This is because there is a short supply
of dairy products because of the drought in New Zealand especially with New Zealand being the largest supplier of dairy products in this region. Mr Hildebrand said the shortage in supply has impacted dairy prices. However, he said the price increase will be subject to approval from the Commerce Commission. Upon receipt of goods, we will be going to Commerce Commission, Mr Hildebrand said. We anticipate all other importers of dairy products will also go to Commerce Commission. No change in domestic products Mr Hildebrand confirmed there has been no price increase for dairy products currently and the Commerce Commission-regulated prices still remain. Meanwhile, Mr Hildebrand said with the recently-opened milk chilling centre in the West, it was encouraging what they are seeing so far. We anticipate for this to get even better, he said.

Boeing has resumed deliveries of its high-tech 787 Dreamliner jet, ending a period of nearly four months in which it was unable to provide new planes to customers because of safety concerns about the battery system. The delivery of the first jet with a redesigned battery system marks a turning point in the 787 crisis, allowing the jet maker to book revenue for completed sales of the jet, which costs $US207 million at list prices. After the announcement Boeing shares rose 1.4 per cent to close at $96.11 on the New York Stock Exchange, their highest levels since November 2007. Resuming deliveries will lower Boeing's profit margin in the nearterm, though. The 787s being delivered now are among the relatively early jets that are more costly to make and that were sold at steep discounts to attract customers. Boeing has never given a final cost estimate for the 787's grounding and repairs, though it absorbed nearly all of
the impact in the first quarter while still posting a rise in profit. Some analysts have projected a final cost of as much as $US600 million. The deliveries will improve Boeing's cash flow this year, however, and will reduce its inventory, something investors have been anticipating as they bid up its stock. Boeing says it delivered a new Dreamliner to All Nippon Airways on Tuesday, its second delivery of the year. The first was delivered before January 16, when regulators grounded the worldwide Dreamliner fleet after two lithium-ion batteries overheated and smoked on two separate jets that month. Boeing has also reaffirmed that it expects to hit its target of delivering more than 60 787s this year. Analysts say the target should be easy to hit. Boeing kept making Dreamliners while the plane was grounded, so about 25 are parked outside its factories waiting to be delivered to customers.
India's top drug maker Ranbaxy Laboratories is to pay a record fine in the US for lying to officials and selling badly made generic drugs. Ranbaxy said its US subsidiary would pay a $500m fine, the biggest handed down to a generic drug maker. Ranbaxy USA pleaded guilty to improper manufacturing, storing and testing of drugs, closing a year-long
stakeholders," said Arun Sawhney, chief executive and managing director of Ranbaxy, in a statement. The fine "does not materially impact our current financial situation or performance", he added.

A defendant in the trial over a fatal gang-rape of a woman on a bus in Delhi last December has been badly bashed in prison. Vinay Sharma is one of four men standing trial for the rape and murder of the 23-year-old woman on a bus in New Delhi last year. Sharma has been held at New Delhi's Tihar Jail since he was arrested over the attack, which stunned India and brought thousands of protesters onto the streets. His lawyer, A P Singh, says the 20-yearold is in a "very critical" condition after being attacked by fellow prisoners. He says Sharma was rushed to the state-run Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday with chest injuries after the assault. He has also alleged his client's food had been poisoned. "He was vomiting blood and running a very high fever. He was also suffering from chest pains. He is in a very critical condition," Mr Singh said. He says the chest pains came after
Sharma was "beaten up and thrashed" by fellow inmates at the maximumsecurity jail. Mr Singh says the vomiting was the result of the "slow poisoning" of his food over a period of several weeks. Sunil Gupta, a spokesman for Tihar Jail, says Sharma is being treated in a city hospital for a fever. "There was no such beating of Vinay to my knowledge. All the allegations are false," he said. One of Sharma's co-defendants, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanged in his cell in the same prison in March. Police arrested Sharma and Singh, along with three other adult men, on charges of raping the 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a moving bus and fiercely beating her and her male friend on December 16. The woman died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital two weeks after the assault. Another defendant, who is aged 17, is being tried in a juvenile court.
A colourless, pear-shaped diamond weighing 101.73 carats has sold for a record $23.8 million. The diamond was bought by prestigious jeweller Harry Winston at a Christie's auction in Geneva. "Twenty-three million (Swiss) francs! Your last chance! Twenty-three million, sold!" auctioneer Francois Curiel shouted clinching the deal before some 150 people gathered for the auction at a luxury Geneva hotel. The auction house says the price, which does not include tax or commission, is the highest ever paid for a flawless colourless diamond. Including tax and commission, the total ticked in at $27.04 million, though Christie's had hoped the gem would go for closer to $30 million. As the first ever buyer of the new diamond, Mr Winston had the privilege of naming it and has decided to call it
"Harry Legacy". Christie's says the American Institute of Gemology classified the gemstone the top colourless grade "D" and the best clarity grade, "flawless", which is characterised by its "absolute symmetry". In the rough, the diamond was 236 carats when it was extracted from the Jwaneng mine in Botswana, before it was meticulously sculpted for 21 months. The previous auction-price recordholder in the category was the 84.37-carat Chloe round diamond, snapped up at a Sotheby's auction in Geneva in 2007 by Guess Jeans founder Georges Marciano for $16.2 million. In the "colourless, flawless" category, the reigning world champion in terms of size is the Cullinan Diamond, a gem weighing 530.2 carats that is part of the British crown jewels.
A number of major clothing retailers in Europe and the US have signed an agreement to improve conditions and ensure building safety for workers in Bangladesh in the wake of a fatal building collapse. More than 1,100 people died when the Rana Plaza building collapsed on the outskirts of the capital. The companies which have joined the agreement include the British chain Marks and Spencer, Sweden's Hennes & Mauritz and Zara's parent company Inditex, which is based in Spain. The deal is due to be formally signed in the coming days, committing retailers to paying for factory repairs and ensuring an efficient system for building and fire safety inspection. American retailer Gap has signaled it could sign up if some changes are made to the terms of the agreement. "We recognise the need for a safer garment industry in Bangladesh," said Krishan Hundal, director of sourcing at Britain's Marks & Spencer, which buys from around 60 factories in Bangladesh. "All our suppliers must adhere to our strict ethical standards as a condition of working with us." The pact will be overseen by the International Labour Organisation, and includes regular safety checks and the use of single occupancy factories. Bangladesh is the world's secondlargest apparel maker and the $20 billion industry accounted for up to 80 per cent of annual exports last year. It has around 4,500 clothing factories, churning out products for Western fashion labels which sell the clothing at many times the cost price. Hundreds of factories have been forced to shut indefinitely after worker unrest sparked by the accident. Consumer groups and clothing workers' unions held protests outside major retailers across Europe in the weeks after the collapse to encourage the companies to take action to improve the conditions of the employees who work for their suppliers. Benetton, which has around 6,500 outlets in 120 countries, was one of the companies that was being supplied by the building that collapsed, along with Britain's Primark and Spain's
Mango. "We decided to support this agreement so that our group can be at the forefront of contributing to a significant and lasting improvement in working conditions and safety in Bangladesh," Benetton chief executive Biagio Chiarolanza said. "From the beginning, we believed that only this type of collaborative approach could bring effective and sustainable change to the issues faced by the garment industry in Bangladesh." Mango said it too would "adhere to and sign" the safety accord proposed by the union bodies. The full list of signatories has yet to be revealed, but US-based PVH, owner of the Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein brands, and Germany's Tchibo, were among the first to back it, according to anti-sweatshop network The Clean Clothes Campaign. The announcements came as Bangladeshi troops wrapped up the search for survivors of the April 24 tragedy. Police have arrested 12 people over the tragedy, including the owner of the building and four factory owners who are accused of forcing staff to return to work a day after cracks emerged in the structure, prompting evacuation. One of the last survivors pulled from the rubble spoke to the media on Monday. Reshma Begum, 19, spent 17 days buried alive under factory rubble until her rescue on Friday. "After much time I regained my senses and heard several voices (of other victims) around me who cried out and said please give me water. I could not see anything as it was dark everywhere," she said. She eventually managed to find a packet of biscuits, as well as two bottles of water that helped slake her terrible thirst. "After that there was nothing to eat." She said she could hear many other victims weeping under the wreckage. "But I did not fear. I don't know where I got so much mental strength. I never thought that I could survive. It is the almighty Allah who saved me," said Ms Begum, who doctors say has been recovering from acute dehydration.

In a message to colleagues, Mr Miller said it has been an "incredibly difficult time" for the IRS. He said there was a "strong and immediate need" to restore public trust in the agency. The scandal erupted when it emerged that officials studying tax exempt status applications singled out groups with names including phrases like "Tea Party" or "Patriots," which could be expected to be fiercely opposed to Mr Obama. The White House says no-one in Mr Obama's governing or political team had anything to do with targeting the groups over their tax-free status. Mr Obama has said he only learned about it from news reports last week. Republican congressman Darrell Issa said Mr Obama had taken a "good first step" and promised a robust congressional probe into the scandal. "The president will find very willing partners on Capitol Hill," he told CNN. "I think in this case, we very much take him at his word that he wants to
be open and transparent, in fixing the system and putting new controls in place." But top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell signaled that the controversy was far from over, as his party tries to use it to slow Mr Obama's political momentum at the beginning of his second term. "These allegations are serious - that there was an effort to bring the power of the federal government to bear on those the administration disagreed with, in the middle of a heated national election," Senator McConnell said. "We are determined to get answers, and to ensure that this type of intimidation never happens again at the IRS or any other agency." Attorney-general Eric Holder had earlier promised a nationwide probe into the claims. "The facts will take us wherever they take us," he said, promising the probe would spread nationwide, beyond the Ohio city of Cincinnati, where the violations are alleged to have taken place.
Bangladeshi officials have hailed the indomitable spirit of a "miracle" survivor who was pulled from a collapsed building 17 days after the disaster. Reshma Begum, 18, was dug out from rubble of the garment factory last week and hoisted onto a stretcher to wild cheers in scenes that captivated a nation which had long given up hope of finding any more survivors. Major General Chowdhury Hassan Suhrawardy says the seamstress drank rainwater and had found lunch boxes of co-workers "from which she got some food". "She has made history. She is an example not only for Bangladesh but also for the world," he said, as the death toll from the impoverished nation's worst industrial accident hit 1,110. He says she had been "trapped in a place spacious enough for her to crawl comfortably. Ms Begum was wearing a fresh dress when she was rescued, taken from a box of clothes she found, and had cut her hair with a pair of scissors "because it is so hot under the rubble", he said. "She still can't sleep well," he said. "She gets frightened every now and then and the nurse has to hold her hand to comfort her." Television footage has showed a
painfully thin Ms Begum smiling shyly from her hospital intensive care bed. Colonel Azizur Rahman, who leads the medical team looking after the women, told reporters she suffered "some metabolical changes" due to malnutrition and her kidney function level dropped to 40 per cent. "She is improving," he said, adding she is now eating rice and semi-solid food. Rescuers found her after long abandoning hope of locating more survivors. They were stunned to hear a woman's voice calling for help. She was freed in a 45-minute operation aired live on television and watched by crowds at the scene who cried "Allahu Akbar" - "God is great" - as she was pulled from the wreckage. "We first saw a pipe moving. We removed some gravel and concrete. We found her standing," Major Moazzem, who goes by one name, said. "She told us: 'My name is Reshma, please save me, please save me brother'," Jamil Ahmed, another rescuer, recounted. Her family, from a remote northern village, call her survival a "miracle". "We had lost all hope of finding her alive. We visited every hospital... the mortuaries and checked everybody," Ms Begum's brother, Zahidul Islam, said.
New Delhi's new metro is a symbol both of India's progress and of its problems. Started in 2002 and completed in 2010, the 189-kilometre metro is among the sprawling country's most impressive postindependence infrastructure projects, built on budget of less than $7 billion. But after its completion, female passengers complained so often of being groped by men that the metro introduced ladies only subway cars. There are other rules to try to maintain order on board -- spitting is banned, as is sitting on the floor and public urination. No food and drinks are allowed on the metro, either. Now, officials are adopting a new tactic in their battle to make rides more pleasant for commuters: they will be using breathalyzers to weed out drunk passengers. Central Industrial Security Force deputy inspector Udyan Banerjee tells The Hindustan Times newspaper that the breathalyzers have already been tested in Rajiv Chowk, a metro station near Old Delhi, and will soon be rolled out at all 134 stations.
The hand-held breathalyzers will help police build a database of potential troublemakers, he said. The move to address public drunkenness on the metro is just the latest in a string of recent efforts by Indian officials to highlight how the country's public transportation is safe, both for locals and tourists alike. Indias latest "Incredible India" ad campaign to lure tourists shows Patricia Malone, co-star of the film The Mentalist, travelling across India alone, conveying a message that the country is a safe one for female tourists to explore on their own. It's meant to showcase India as a safe destination after a number of recent high-profile assaults on tourists. On March 15, a Swiss tourist was gang raped while on a cycling holiday with her husband in the central Madhya Pradesh state. Her husband was tied to a tree. In another incident, a British woman jumped off the balcony of her second floor hotel room to escape a man she said tried to get into her room. That happened in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, the nations biggest tourist draw.

Marvin Hunt may decide to stay on with the city while serving as an MLA
A former gas-bar jockey is facing jail time and possible deportation for trying to swindle a customer out of 6/49 winnings in an oddball case where the lotto-loving victim became the one ultimately making out like a lucky bandit. Ashwinder Singh, 32, appeared for sentencing Tuesday on an attempted fraud charge. He previously pleaded guilty to trying to cash a lottery ticket worth more than $90,600, which he essentially pilfered from a customer at a gas station he worked at in July 2011. The customer, 61, had a multi-play 6/49 ticket which won $5 on one draw but was still valid for future draws. Singh didn't return the man's ticket and then tried to claim the winnings after it came up a major winner on July 28, 2011. Unbeknownst to Singh, the oblivious victim purchased another multi-draw 6/49 stub a few days later. Since he always played the same numbers, his new ticket also came up a $90,641

winner for the very same draw. After lotteries officials and investigators painstakingly probed what actually happened after Singh came forward and they discovered he lied about his luck, the victim was awarded both prizes as he was the rightful owner of both winning tickets, Judge Brian Corrin was told. "(The victim) is now the happy winner of $180,000 and that is perhaps the strangest twist in all of this," Crown attorney Mitchell Lavitt said. The Crown is seeking either a period of jail time or a conditional sentence of unspecified length for Singh, a father of three and citizen of India who has Permanent Resident status in Canada. Defence lawyer Allan Baker wants Singh to serve a conditional jail term of six months less a day so he won't run afoul of immigration laws. A six-month or longer term would make Singh inadmissible to Canada under Immigration and Refugee Protection Act provisions and could lead to him being kicked out of the country.
Rogers customers are being asked to pay an extra $2/month for paper billing, amid claims of discrimination by a seniors' advocate. Many wireless and cellphone companies already charge a similar amount for a paper bill, including Bell, Telus, Fido, Virgin, Koodo Mobile and Wind Mobile. Banks are also pushing clients away from paper billing. TD Canada Trust, RBC and BMO have added $2/month, while CIBC's monthly fee is now $3. Many customers find electronic statements more convenient, but some campaigners say charging for paper billing is unfair to elderly customers, who do not own computers or smartphones. Martha Jane Lewis, Executive Director
of the B.C. Centre for Elder Advocacy Support, said seniors should be exempt from the charges. "Technology is moving ahead and that's fine for people who are able to cope with that. But for people who, through no fault of their own, are not into the technology age they shouldn't be penalized for this," she said. Lewis wants the government to step in and determine if the paper fee is fair. A Rogers representative told the CBC the company aims to save 1.6 million tonnes of paper and that customers were given ample notice of the fee. Rogers provides 24-7 access to billing services online and customers also have the option of viewing and paying their bill in any Rogers store.
Brampton Realtor Shalinder Kapoor Charged With Stealing From Listed Homes
A Brampton realtor has been charged with breaking and entering homes and stealing jewellery. According to a Halton Police news release, Shalinder Kapoor, 38, was arrested Monday without incident and several pieces of stolen jewellery were found after a search of his vehicle. He faces two charges of break-andenter and theft. Police say the realtor visited a home for sale on Pringle Ave. in Milton on April 26 under the guise of showing it to a potential buyer. The agent was observed entering and leaving the premise unaccompanied, the news release said. When the homeowners returned, they found a number of jewellery pieces missing and reported it to police. Police allege the realtor is also responsible for a similar entry at a home on McCandless Ct. on March 18.

Hamilton-Area Father Tim Bosma Found Dead, Dellen Millard Faces Charges
An Ancaster man missing since last week was targeted by a group of men and murdered, Hamilton Police say. Tim Bosma, 32, disappeared after taking two men out to test drive his pickup truck May 6. Police confirmed Tuesday his body was found burned beyond recognition. Det.-Sgt. Matt Kavanaugh said investigators believe Bosma was targeted but would not discuss a motive. Police are concentrating their efforts to identify the other suspects involved in this murder investigation, Kavanaugh told a packed press conference. He said Bosma and the two men were followed in his truck by another vehicle when they left his Ancaster home Monday night. Kavanaugh said Dellen Millard, the 27-year-old suspect already charged with forcible confinement and theft over $5,000 in connection to Bosmas disappearance and was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the case. Police also confirmed Bosmas 2007 black Dodge Ram 3500 was found in a trailer in Kleinburg. Tim Bosma's widow: 'I am broken because part of me is gone' Sharlene Bosma says she is broken. A day after the burned remains of her husband, Tim, were discovered, and all hope he would be found alive dashed, she spoke to media at a church in Ancaster. Yesterday was the most horrifying day of my life, she said Wednesday, tears streaming from her eyes. She said she must now be strong for the couples two-year-old daughter. But the pain of her husbands murder will never go away. I am broken because part of me is gone, she said. She thanked police, media and the public for their help searching for her husband. He disappeared May 6 after taking two men out to test drive his pickup truck, which was up for sale. He never returned to their Ancaster home.

While B.C. Premier Christy Clark bucked expectations around the province Tuesday with a Liberal victory, she failed to win a seat for herself in the legislature. The NDPs David Eby defeated the premier in Vancouver-Point Grey by 785 votes, leaving Clark with the awkward task of finding a riding presumably held by a Liberal who was just elected where she can try again. Despite the results in Clarks Vancouver riding, the Liberals won a decisive majority throughout the province. It was the Liberals fourth-consecutive victory and Clarks first win as leader. Well, that was easy, a beaming Clark joked with supporters at the Liberal victory party in downtown Vancouver. Tonight, we have received a mandate from the people of British Columbia, and I say to the citizens of British Columbia: you have humbled us tonight with this opportunity and the tremendous obligation you placed on our shoulders. We will honour what you have bestowed on us, and together we will make British Columbia better. The Liberals trailed Dixs New Democrats in public opinion polls by as much as 20 points before the campaign started, but on Tuesday night, the governing party had reelected incumbents and even stole a few ridings from the NDP in areas they were never expected to win. The party increased its standings in the legislature, winning in at least 50 ridings. The Liberals had 45 seats before the legislature was dissolved. The Liberal upset was the second recent Western Canadian election to stump the pollsters. Albertas governing Conservatives pulled off a similar comeback in April 2012, when all predictions called for their defeat. In both cases, it appears the electorate chose an unpopular but safe and middle-of-the-road choice over a more radical opposition the right wing Wildrose Party in Alberta and the leftwing New Democrats in B.C. The debate in B.C. will begin now: did Clark pull off a miracle win, or did Dix lose an election that was his for the taking? Dix addressed party members in Vancouver, conceding defeat but offering no explanation for why his party fell so far below expectations. Nor did he make any mention of his own future as leader. We have elected a very strong team thats going to hold the government accountable, Dix said. This partys determination to bring change will continue. Weve brought change because we connect with people. We brought change because we fight for a better society and we are going to continue to do just that. At NDP headquarters, exhausted campaign workers who had been floating through Dixs stump speeches for a month buoyed by certainty of a win, collapsed in tears. The Liberals jumped into the lead in early returns and never fell behind the New Democrats. Their victories included both Kamloops-area ridings that have been considered bellwethers in provincial elections for a century.
Christy Clark Wins The B.C. Election, But Loses Her Seat To The NDP
Even Liberals seemed stunned by the magnitude of the turnaround. Early in the evening, a small crowd at Liberal headquarters erupted in sporadic shouts as results came in their favour. The crowd quickly grew and turned more boisterous as it became clear the downtown party headquarters would be hosting a victory celebration rather than a wake for the partys demise. Longtime Liberals were privately as shocked as pundits and likely, so too were pollsters. But publicly, those close to the campaign said they knew it all along. There were some signals that such a result was possible over the last year and a half, Barry Penner, a longtime Liberal and former cabinet minister who left politics in 2011, said in an interview. At no time did support for the NDP register greater than 50 per cent in major public opinion polls. Even at the lowest ebb for the B.C. Liberal party, the public was not wildly enthusiastic for Adrian Dix or the NDP. That was a signal that the public was not falling in love with the NDP. In Clarks own riding, previously held by former Liberal premier Gordon Campbell, Eby defeated the premier in a race that was too close to call until well past midnight. It was the second race against Clark for newly elected NDP candidate David Eby, a prominent civil liberties lawyer who also challenged her in a byelection in 2011. Neither Clark nor party officials were available to comment about the loss. I dont know whats going to happen in my riding lets wait and see when all the polls come in, Clark told reporters. There was a pretty significant advanced poll in that riding, so really, I dont know what the results are going to be. Im with many people who worked on individual MLA campaigns, and what theyre seeing on the television screens does not match what theyre seeing and thinking about the polls, or what they were feeling on the doorsteps of the ridings
Opinion polls had consistently placed Clarks main opponent, Dix, as a favourite to win. Dix ran a populist campaign that urged voters it was time for a change after 12 years of Liberal governments. Former NDP finance minister Paul Ramsey, who was spending the night at the partys headquarters, was at a loss to explain what happened. Im with many people who worked on individual MLA campaigns, and what theyre seeing on the television screens does not match what theyre seeing and thinking about the polls, or what they were feeling on the doorsteps of the ridings, said Ramsey. I sense a real shock in the room, and I share that. The election also brought in Canadas first Green to be elected to a provincial legislature. Climate scientist and Green party candidate Andrew Weaver defeated Liberal cabinet minister Ida Chong in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, near Victoria. The Liberals took back both seats in the Fraser Valley that the party lost in last years byelections, and snatched a seat from longtime New Democrat Harry Lali in Fraser-Nicola, in the Fraser Canyon. The vote came after a month-long campaign that saw the Liberals play the part of underdog under Clark, who took over the party from Gordon Campbell more than two years ago. The Liberals were derided by much of the province over their introduction of the harmonized sales tax and other scandals, including the criminal probe into the sale of BC Rail. During the campaign, Clark attempted to frame the election as a vote on the economy, gambling that her predecessors economic record would be enough to convince voters to keep
the Liberals in power. She made bold promises to turn B.C. into a world leader in liquefied natural gas, confidentially predicting the industry will create tens of thousands of jobs and fuel government revenues that will one day make her province debt-free. The Liberals attempted to cast the NDP as a party of anti-development radicals who would kill jobs and force workers to flee to Alberta an image that was bolstered by Dixs mid-campaign announcement that he would oppose a pipeline expansion proposed by Kinder Morgan. In the dying days of the campaign, one of Clarks top cabinet ministers, Mike de Jong, invoked the likes of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez as he warned of the dangers of an NDP government. Dix, in turn, claimed to take the high road, insisting his campaign was about ideas and not attacks. Still, his party spent the past month highlighting past Liberal scandals and accusing Clark of running a fact-free campaign. Minutes before Dix conceded, New Democrat Spencer Chandra Herbert, who was re-elected in Vancouver-West End, was taking the results in stride. Ive always known that whether youre in government or sitting in opposition, you have an incredible role to fulfil and that is fighting for change, he said at the NDP headquarters. Whatever role the voters decide for us tonight, were going to have to pick up that mantle and go for it. Dix handily won his riding in Vancouver-Kingsway. Conservative Leader John Cummins, whose party was considered a major threat to the Liberals just a year ago, was soundly defeated in Langley, where Liberal cabinet minister Mary Polak held onto the seat. Green Leader Jane Sterk lost her riding of Victoria-Beacon Hill to former NDP leader Carole James. There were other surprises that emerged throughout the night. The NDP won Vancouver-Fairview with former union leader George Heyman as the candidate. He took the riding from Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. John Van Dongen, a former Liberal who switched to the Conservatives and then became an Independent, lost in Abbotsford-South. The riding returned to the Liberals, with candidate Darryl Plecas, a criminology professor, projected to win by a large margin. In Chilliwack, Liberal John Martin defeated New Democrat Patti MacAhonic. Martin had run as a Conservative in last years ChilliwackHope byelection but later switched to the Liberals. Vicki Huntington, a popular former Delta city councillor, was elected again in her riding of Delta-South as an Independent.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Coloring
We need more than lite ice-cream to help children fight the battle of the bulge. Experts are calling for a revolution in everything from sports funding to urban design. "It was hard for me to walk or run. Everyone made fun of me. I didn't make it into the netball team. I was eating fast food two or three times a week. I didn't like the way I looked." Being overweight makes many people self-conscious. But for 12-year-old Emily, on the brink of her teen years, it's especially daunting. She's been obese for almost four years and her case is not uncommon. Almost a quarter of children share her problem, a figure that has doubled over the past 15 years. Although adult obesity rates are far higher, childhood obesity is a concern because it increases health risks not normally associated with youth. Type 2 diabetes, for example, was almost unheard of in young people until recent years. Now we have an epidemic of the condition, largely spurred by increasing obesity rates. A global epidemic According to the World Health Organization, close to 18 million children and 200 million adults around the world were obese in 1995. As of 2003, there are an estimated 300 million obese adults worldwide. And obesity is not just a product of the western world. In fact, developing countries hold around one-third of the world's obese population. The prevalence of obesity is placing a major burden on health care providers globally. In the United States, the total economic cost is estimated at around $99US billion. Around twothirds of adult males and over half of adult females are classed as either overweight or obese a total of almost seven million people. What causes it? The direct cause of obesity is an energy imbalance, when a person's food intake far exceeds what they can burn off. While the condition sometimes has a medical or genetic basis, these factors account for only a small percentage of all cases. There is some evidence to suggest that an absence of breastfeeding, and/ or low birth weight, can contribute to a child developing excess weight, but
the link is poorly understood. The sudden boom in obesity is mostly attributed to technological advances that have left us more sedentary. We drive rather than walk or cycle; we spend a lot of time sitting in front of computers; we have an abundance of food (which can be delivered to our doorsteps); and we can do our shopping, banking, and researching at the touch of a button. Children particularly spend a lot of time playing computer games, watching television, and eating fatty snacks like chips and chocolate, instead of playing outside and eating nutritious meals. Further, a fear of crime and 'stranger danger' has led many parents to keep their kids indoors when not able to be observed. When both parents work, children often have no-one to supervise them after school; no-one to turn off the television and take them to a sporting activity or for a run in the park. One of Emily's biggest challenges was to find something nutritious to eat outside of home, even at school. For some kids, the school cafeteria is the only source of lunch for the week. "The school canteen has a lot of junk food. It's hard to get something healthy," Emily says. "It's hard at the movies too. I still let myself have a drink and a lollipop, but only about once a month." A nation of spectators A physical activity agency is warning that obsession with sport has moved away from participation and towards 'spectators'. We're much keener on watching sport as entertainment, than on doing anything that makes us hot and sweaty ourselves. A strong peer pressure to wear certain clothing brands puts off poorer children from joining sporting associations, for fear of being outcast. The cost of sporting fees is another deterrent. And once a child becomes overweight, as Emily discovered, they have a much harder time being accepted into local or school sporting groups. No-one wants the fat boy or girl on their team.

Heres a list of terms that should help you understand your condition. High Blood Pressure Terms Arteries: blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body tissues. ARBs (angiotensin-receptor blockers): a type of high blood pressure medicine that blocks the action of a natural substance in the body called angiotensin II that increases blood pressure. BENICAR/BENICAR HCT belong to the class of drugs called ARBs. Blood pressure: the pressure of the blood on blood vessel walls. Blood pressure is a result of many factors. For example, the force of the heart muscle as it contracts, how much fluid is in the blood, and blood vessel resistance. Blood pressure cuff: an instrument for measuring blood pressure, particularly in the arteries. Coronary artery disease (CAD): blockage of one or more arteries that supply blood to the heart, usually caused by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Symptoms and signs of an acute blockage may include chest pain or heart attack. Cholesterol: a fatty steroid that serves as a building block for many essential substances within the body, including bile acids and hormones. Elevated cholesterol levels increase the risk for
dangerous because it often causes no symptoms. Many people falsely assume that men are the most at risk for cardiovascular diseases, but -- at publication time -- more women than men had died of cardiovascular diseases every year since 1984. Untreated high blood pressure can cause kidney damage, and raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. The cause of 3 out of 5 cases of heart failure in women is high blood pressure. Coronary heart disease is the number one killer of most women, claiming more than 500,000 women's lives each year. Early detection and treatment of high blood pressure could prevent many of these deaths. Women who use oral contraceptives should have their blood pressure closely monitored, although the risk from oral contraceptives is much lower than it was previously because the amount of estrogen and progestin in today's pills is significantly less. Women with high blood pressure who smoke and use oral contraceptives face a 10 to 15 times greater risk of stroke. After menopause, a woman's risk of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases increases greatly; the risk increases significantly faster for women after hysterectomy, perhaps because the uterus produces chemicals that help regulate blood pressure. Other factors that contribute to high blood pressure include smoking, lack of physical activity, overweight, high sodium intake, high cholesterol, excessive intake of alcoholic beverages, and heredity. Diabetes patients also are at greater risk for high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Getting a regular physical which includes having your blood pressure taken will help to reduce your chances of getting heart disease. Genetics is another risk factor that is sometimes undervalued, especially if your parents had hypertension.

Adding the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, or both to a formulation of antioxidant vitamins and minerals that has shown effectiveness in reducing risk of progression to advanced agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) did not further help reduce the risk, a new study has found. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world, according to background information in the article. Without more effective ways of slowing progression, the number of persons with advanced AMD is expected to double over the next 20 years, resulting in increasing socioeconomic burden, the researchers wrote. "Oral supplementation with the AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS) formulation (antioxidant vitamins C, E, and beta carotene and zinc) has been shown to reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD. Observational data suggest that increased dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin, omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA]), or both might further reduce this risk," they said. Emily Y. Chew, M.D., of the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., and colleagues with the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) Research Group examined whether adding lutein + zeaxanthin, DHA + EPA, or both to the AREDS formulation might further reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD. A secondary goal was to evaluate the effect of eliminating beta carotene, lowering zinc doses, or both in the AREDS formulation. AREDS2, a multicenter, randomized phase 3 study was conducted in 2006-2012, enrolling 4,203 participants 50 to 85 years of age at risk for progression to advanced AMD with bilateral large drusen (tiny yellow or white deposits in the retina
of the eye or on the optic nerve head) or large drusen in 1 eye and advanced AMD in the fellow eye. Participants were randomized to receive lutein (10 mg) and zeaxanthin (2 mg), DHA (350 mg) + EPA (650 mg), lutein + zeaxanthin and DHA + EPA, or placebo. All participants were also asked to take the original AREDS formulation or accept a secondary randomization to 4 variations of the AREDS formulation, including elimination of beta carotene, lowering of zinc dose, or both. A total of 1,608 participants had experienced at least 1 advanced AMD event by the end of the study (1,940 events in 6,891 study eyes). The researchers found that the probabilities of progression to advanced AMD by 5 years were 31 percent for placebo, 29 percent for lutein + zeaxanthin, 31 percent for DHA + EPA, and 30 percent for lutein + zeaxanthin and DHA + EPA. In the primary analyses, comparisons with placebo demonstrated no statistically significant reductions in progression to advanced AMD. "There was no apparent effect of beta carotene elimination or lower-dose zinc on progression to advanced AMD. More lung cancers were noted in the beta carotene vs. no beta carotene group (23 [2 percent] vs. 11 [0.9 percent]), mostly in former smokers," the authors wrote. None of the nutrients affected development of moderate or worse vision loss. The researchers added, "these null results may be attributable to the true lack of efficacy. Other factors to consider include inadequate dose, inadequate duration of treatment, or both." "Based on apparent risks of beta carotene and possible benefits that are only evident within exploratory subgroup analyses, lutein + zeaxanthin requires further investigation for potential inclusion in the AREDS supplements."
Scientists led by an Indian origin have linked perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - chemical found in things such as nonstick cookware and packaged foods like microwave popcorn - to cardiovascular disease. West Virginia University (WVU) School of Public Health, Morgantown, researchers looked at the health data of 1,200 Americans and compared their PFOA serum levels with the heart disease incidence. The results of the study showed that greater the PFOA amounts in the bloodstream, the greater is the
cardiovascular disease risk -regardless of factors like age, race, smoking, BMI, diabetes, and even hypertension, as reported. Lead study author Dr. Anoop Shankar , chair of the department of epidemiology in the WVU School of Public Health, said that they can't yet be certain that PFOA causes heart disease, but suggested that the two could be related in another way, like people suffering from heart disease tending to retain more PFOA in their blood. According to the FDA, many popcorn bags contain high levels of PFOAs.

The actor who dropped Kapoor from his surname and added an S to his name goes candid.. What is your approach towards a particular role you play in a Film? My approach is like I get nervous on every film that I do. Every new film to me is like a first day of my school. Will the teacher be nice, Will the rest of the student be nice? The exact fever what you get on first day of your school, Is my fever on every new film I do. When I start to work on any film, I enjoy to my core before starting. I keep looking at the script and rehearsing it many times. I try to understand my characters and work on it. You dont feel the Stress-Level in your Home Productions? Yes I do. In fact there i ask myself if I am taking it very lightly just because a movie is my home production? When an actor is in front of the camera, It does not make any difference if the film is your Home Production or an outside banner. The scenario is the same. How do you compare Shootout At Lokhandwala to Shootout At Wadala? Shootout At Lokhandwala was a hardcore action film. Shootout At Wadala is more of a Realistic film which is based on a True Story. Besides this one being a serious film, It still has a package of Romance, Comedy and Masala. Shootout At Lokhandwala was a much bigger film, It was a Larger than Life kind of a film. This one is a much more serious film. What is your character in Shootout At Wadala? I play a Muslim guy in the film who meets Manya Surve (John Abraham) in jail. This is the 70s era we are talking about. My character was 13 years old when he went to jail for the first time. When Manya Surve makes his own
gang and I join him and we become the enemy of Dawood Ibrahims gang, Despite of being a Muslim, I join a Hindu Gang. This what my character in the film is. My character is the one who makes Manya Surve gang aggressive and make a Hindu gang. So you support friendship in this film? Theres a dialogue in this film that Friendship does not have any cast or a religion. A true muslim can give his life for friendship. The songs of the film are Popular, Any personal favorite? As far as the audio goes, It is definitely Laila and for the video, I love all the songs. Priyanka Chopra has performed terrifically. Any film of your dad are you planning to remake? No we have not planned anything as such. But if given an opportunity, I would love to remake my dads Farz. I think it was an awesome film. If you can present an old wine in a new bottle, Why not? It is heard that you all are planning Jeetendras biography? No we are not. In fact I have already denied this in media too. But yes I am planning to celebrate his 50 Years in Indian Cinema very soon. Do you plan to take care of Balaji Telefilms in future? I would love to take care of Balaji Telefilms sometimes in future. But right now I am here for the family support. Balaji has a huge team of creatively talented people. I have already started a discussion which is not regarding directing a film, But as a Producer. Maybe I end up with it but with my style and in a different manner. As an actor, What matters to you the most? Box Office is the main thing that matters to me. But i would also like to be appreciated by the critical audience. Appreciations of any kind is very welcome. What is the next film you are working on? The next film is called Bajaate Raho by Eros International.

Kareena Kapoor will team up with her Omkara and Golmaal Returns co-star Ajay Devgan once again in Shabinaa Khan's film. The designer-turnedproducer is apparently in talks with the stars for her next project which is likely to take off next year. A source says, `Shabinaa is in the process of signing Ajay Devgan. Details of the film are being tightly kept under wraps but the script has been locked in and a director is being pencilled in. The project will go on the floors early 2014. ` Adds the source, `As Shabinaa is a close friend of Kareena, she is keen to
have her on board and she has given her nod to the project. ` The source further adds, `Shabinaa shares a great equation with Ajay Devgan too. This project might also be co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Although she is also designing for several stars, Shabinaa now wants to focus on making films. ` Shabinaa earlier co-produced the Akshay Kumar-starrer Rowdy Rathore with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She is also co-producing Gabber with Akshay Kumar which is the remake of the South film Ramanna.

John Abraham looks all set to be the lead in Shubash Ghais remake of 1993 hit Khalnayak. Shubash Ghai has produced several classic hits like Karma, Hero, Ram Lakhan and is now considering to re-make his old films with a modern approach. My movies Hero, Karma, Ram Lakhan and Khalnayak will be rewritten and will be made in a fresh way, he told. At present the director is working on the remake of Khalnayak which did wonders for Sanjay Dutts career. We are planning something on Khalynayak. We are working on that. We have few directors on board and we
will make the announcement soon. We dont want to reveal much now, Ghai further added. We are looking to present the story in a contemporary way. added Ghai. But when asked of Johns presence in the project, Ghai dodged the question telling, We are still in the scripting stage. Once we finish scripting, we will think about the star cast. For us, the idea and the concept come first. Even if John is not seen in the movie, we can be sure of the fact the Sanjay Dutt wont be a part of the remake as he shall be serving his jail sentence in connection to the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.
For quite some time, there has been news doing the rounds that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is planning to make a comeback but there has been no such official information from any source. Now the latest grapevine doing the round is that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has chosen Yash Raj Films as her comeback pad. She will be paired opposite the Barfi! actor Ranbir Kapoor. It is heard that when Aditya Chopra approached Ash with the script, she liked it very much and showed her interest in the film. It is going to be a romantic drama and she will be paired opposite Ranbir. Aishwarya is highly impressed with Ranbirs acting and thinks that he is a fabulous actor. Ash has heard the script and is very excited about it and working with a younger hero like Ranbir, a source is quoted as saying by a tabloid. Ranbir and Ash pairing would really be interesting as the Kapoor lad is
much younger to Aishwarya. She was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bahnsalis Guzaarish in 2007 and post the movie, she went on a maternity leave. Now that Aaradhya has grown up a little, she has decided to resume acting. It was not too long when we heard that Aishwarya will make her comeback with newcomer Varun Dhawan. But that report too died down as there was no confirmation. Then it was heard that Farah Khan has approached Ash for her new project, Happy New Year starring Abhishek Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan but the actress was rumored to have declined the project as she is not interested to pair with SRK other than her hubby. Well, it would be really interesting to see Ash opposite young Ranbir. Aditya Chopra who has not directed any film for a long time will direct the film. If dates and money sorted out then very soon we will get to see Ash ablaze the silver screen yet again.

IIFA Awards 2013: Amitabh Bachchan To Grace Ceremony In Macau? Looks like alls well between Big B and Wizcraft, and the Bollywood
legend might return as the face of IIFA in its 14th edition
After a decade-long association with the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards, Amitabh Bachchan, then the brand ambassador of the annual event, had a tiff with organisers Wizcraft International Entertainment. This was because the Bachchan family had refused to go to Sri Lanka for the awards in 2010 owing to some opposition to Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchans film Raavan in the neighbouring country. And so, Salman Khan had famously taken over the mantle from Big B, and was seen everywhere at the Sri Lankan IIFA Weekend. But last year again, the big stars of Bollywood like Amitabh, Salman, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Akshay Kumar (Aamir Khan doesnt attend award ceremonies) missed the event. It was evident that the IIFA party was losing sheen. It seems now Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft has called a truce and Big B is likely to be the face of the international Bollywood awards ceremony again. And Bachchan will make his comeback at a familiar venue The Venetian Macao hotel in Macau, where the 2009 IIFA Weekend was held. Looks like Wizcraft preferred to go with Macau looking at its experience with The Venetian, and rejected Vancouvers bid earlier this year. Lets see if Shahrukh and Salman will turn up for the IIFA Awards 2013!
Actor Ranbir Kapoor says he is so besotted with actress Madhuri Dixit that he bribed his director Ayan Mukerji to let him kiss her on cheeks while she was shooting an item number with him for upcoming film 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' Madhuri recently shot for an item song with Ranbir in 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', slated for May 31 release. "She (Madhuri) was my first love and my heart broke when she got married. I was happy when I got the opportunity to dance with her and see her, " Ranbir said at a promotional event of the film. In a candid confession, the actor said
he had to "bribe" Ayan Mukerji in his own way to let him kiss the actress on her cheeks. The item song 'Ghagra' is choreographed by Farah Khan. Heaping praises on the 'dhak dhak' girl, Ranbir said, "She is sincere, passionate and talented. It was great working with her. She is wonderful. " Ranbir who visited the sets of dance reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' last year for promotion of his film 'Barfi', did break into a jig with the actress. Interestingly, Ranbir's father Rishi Kapoor had worked with Madhuri in various films.

The 2013 Chevrolet Trax was in tough at the recent Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) competition staged by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. It was entered in the category Best New SUV/CUV Under $35,000 where it was up against the likes of Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Escape and Honda CRV. And it finished behind all of them. So it would be easy to dismiss the Trax as the categorys 90-pound weakling. And that would be wrong, because the contest was anything but a battle of equals. As tested, the Trax was $24,430 thousands less than most of its bigger and better equipped rivals. Drive them all back-to-back, as we judges do at CCOTY, and the compact Trax suffers by comparison. But take it out on its own for an extended run and it is perfectly acceptable. Recently, I got to test the Trax over several hundred km of snowy, slushy, rutted roads in the Gatineau hills of Quebec. And when the going got tough, Trax kept on going. Paint it pink and it might very well be the little Energizer Bunny of CUVs. Even with all-season tires, Trax handled the conditions well. And perhaps it was just as well that our AWD test vehicles didnt come shod with winter radials because then we might have been tempted to push it too hard on the icy hills, drifted-in curves and unplowed back roads. Power comes from GMs ubiquitous 1.4-litre turbocharged engine. With automatic, it can send Trax from 0-100 km/h in 10.3 seconds. The interior is surprisingly spacious for a vehicle that, although taller, has roughly the same footprint as the
Autos
Pontiac Vibe. But whats with the four cupholders for driver and front passenger? Rear seat legroom is good, but cramming three adults in back there will be a little uncomfortable especially for the unlucky soul who gets to sit in the middle. Better to flip the centre armrest down and let two ride in comfort. With the rear seats upright, cargo space is 530 litres and can be expanded by folding them forward. The front passenger seat folds flat too, for longer items, and the non-power liftgate requires only the lightest touch to make it close. Trax is available in four trim levels, with either front-wheel drive or allwheel drive. The base LS, priced from $18,495, is the only model with a standard six-speed manual transmission and optional air conditioning. All
others get standard A/C and a six-speed automatic. Top-of-the-line model is the LTZ, which comes loaded with 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, MyLink touch radio, power drivers seat and auto-dimming rear view mirror for $29,330. Chevrolet expects the most popular model to be the 1LT with MSRPs of $23,205 for FWD and $25,155 for AWD, which is optional across the lineup. Other standard equipment includes 10 airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, tilt and telescopic steering, hill hold assist, power windows/locks/ mirrors, electric power steering and Bluetooth. With an overall length of 4,280 mm, Trax is a little bigger than Nissan Juke, Suzuki SX-4 and Kia Soul, but is 120 mm shorter than Hyundai Tucson, which Vincent Boillot, GM Canadas
product manager crossovers, sees as the bulls-eye target, and says that comparably equipped Trax is $1,760 cheaper. And dont kid yourself that price isnt a big motivator for consumers in the compact crossover marketplace. All Trax models sold in Canada will be built in Mexico. Notable options: 6-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning; AWD, Bose premium sound system with 7 speakers and XM satellite radio; sunroof. Configuration: Front engine/ front and all-wheel drive Available engines: 1.4L turbo 4-cyl. (138 hp/ 148 lb.-ft.) Available transmissions: 6-spd manual, 6-spd automatic Fuel (capacity): regular (52L) Fuel economy ratings (L/100km): 7.8 city; 5.7 hwy (FWD man.) Warranty: 3 years/ 60,000 km (basic); 5 years/ 160,000 km (powertrain) Competitors: Hyundai Tucson; Kia Soul; Nissan Juke; Suzuki SX-4 Strengths: price; fuel economy; size/ manoeuvrability Weaknesses: a tad underpowered; plasticky interior; no CD player
A little planning for your driving vacation can save you a lot of trouble on the road. Here are some tips. FLUIDS ARE KEY 1. Check the engine oil level. And get an oil change if needed. 2. With the engine warm and running, check the automatic transmission fluid level. Top it off if needed. Be careful not to overfill. 3. Check the coolant level in the overflow tank and top off as needed with a 50-50 mix of antifreeze/coolant and water. If the engine is cool, check the level in the radiator as well. If the radiator is not completely full, have the cooling system checked by a professional. Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. 4. Brake fluid does not require topping off provided the level is between the full and low marks on the reservoir. A fluid level near or below the low marking could signal worn brakes or a leak in the system. Have the system inspected by a professional. SEE AND BE SEEN 1. Replace windshield wipers that leave streaks or dont clear the glass with a single swipe. 2. Make sure all vehicle lights, including headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning properly. 3. Top off the windshield washer fluid
reservoir with an appropriate cleaning solvent. CHECK FOR WEAR AND TEAR 1. Ensure the battery cables are securely attached and the terminals are free of corrosion. 2. With the engine off and cool, check the drive belts. Replace any that are cracked, glazed or frayed. Check belts that dont have an automatic tensioner for proper tension; there should be no more than one-half inch deflection when the belt is pressed midway between two pulleys. 3. Check the radiator and heater hoses for visible wear, soft spots or bulges, and look for leaks around clamps and the water pump. THOSE ALL-IMPORTANT TIRES 1. Check and adjust tire pressures to the vehicle manufacturers recommended settings check your owners manual or door jamb for these numbers, and dont forget the spare. Inspect the tire sidewalls for bulges, and check the tread for excessive or uneven wear that indicates the need for wheel alignment and/or tire replacement. 2. For maximum life, rotate your tires at the mileage interval specified in your owners manual. Note that some vehicles use differently-sized tires front and rear that cannot be rotated. KNOW WHERE YOURE GOING 1. Get up-to-date, accurate maps and
routing information before leaving home. 2. For long trips, plan stops along the way to stay alert. Use GPS to help find restaurants and lodgings along your route. To find the best lodging rates, book in advance and take advantage of discounts. 3. Share your travel itinerary with friends and family. 4. During a road trip, its important to budget for fuel, especially now. PACK SMART 1. A few basics to have on board during road trips include a small first aid kit, your vehicles owners manual, a flashlight and a tire pressure gauge. Its also a good idea to keep an emergency tire inflator and sealer with you. This can help you safely and quickly get off the side of the road and to a safer location for further assistance. If you use an emergency tire inflator and sealer, drive at a lower speed and have
your tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible. 2. Always keep a fully-charged cell phone with you so you can call for help in case of a breakdown. Carrying a car charger for your cell phone is a good idea. 3. Consider taking a GPS navigation device with you. It may be a portable or handheld device such as a Magellan unit. 4. Check your vehicles payload capacity, the maximum combined weight of all cargo and passengers that can safely be carried. You can typically find this figure on a sticker attached to the drivers door of the vehicle. 5. Limit any load on top of your vehicle to a maximum of 18 in height and no more than 100 pounds. 6. Do not overload the trunk or rear cargo compartment. Items in a vehicles open cargo area or on the roof should be properly secured to prevent shifting of the load.

Relieve stress We ALWAYS have a choice, and you are working where you are because for now, with the resources and know how you have, it is the best option available. You are there for some of the payoffs, it could be the work, the people, the salary, perks, timing, location or opportunity of growth it is providing. Make sure you can see that you are working there by choice and make the most of it. Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #13 Techniques to relieve stress at work Exaggerate:
Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #17 Techniques to relieve stress at work: Centering Method
Practice this often and do it anywhere; you can practice centering standing up, before you go from one meeting to the next, from work to home, or from one call to another or if your boss has given you some feedback that shook you. Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #20
Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #15 Techniques to relieve stress at work Follow these steps for centering:
Think of the words that you may recite in your head when you are stressed and then exaggerate them; notice what this feels like in your body and what it does to your breathing. Usually the message is something like 'I will fail,' 'I will be sacked,' 'I may get demoted or scolded by my superiors,' 'people will see me as incompetent,' or 'I am just not good enough.' Terrible isnt it? Can you see how unhealthy and how unproductive thinking this way can be to you? Notice how your body folds in, your breathing becomes short, your eyes and brows burrow inwards to form lines and frowns on your forehead, and your mouth goes down. Exaggerate the facial expressions stress brings with it and you will get a sense of how terrible it is for you. Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #14 Techniques to relieve stress at work Centering: This technique is effective only if you adhere to the previous steps. And finally, we come to the most useful step but it is only possible to try this once you
Accept things as they are - all your thoughts, emotions, and feelings. Put everything else aside. They are already in the past. Accept them, don't change or resist, and just accept your emotions. Acceptance is the center of emotion. Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #18 Techniques to relieve stress at work: Centering Method
How to Center Yourself Close your eyes. Sit in an open body position with your feet flat on the floor. Your palms should be open and face upwards on your thighs. - Notice the fabric of your pants and how they feel on your skin; notice the feel of your feet on the ground. - Close your eyes softly, relax your eye-lids, balance your head on your shoulders without leaning forward or backwards. Relax your shoulders. Ways on How to Deal with Stress at Work #16 Techniques to relieve stress at work: Centering Method Breathe into your Dan Tian (2 inches below your navel), in and out. Place your left hand on your belly and imagine your breath flowing into there,
Finally the last step is to socialise. Create allies and friends at the office that you have common outside interests with. Practice the centering exercise I shared with you and if all else does not work, sit back, look at the ceiling and imagine you are lying on a deckchair in Goa, looking at the blue sky and listening to the waves. The body shift will instantly de-stress you for minutes, giving you the opportunity and choice to be in a better mood for the rest of the day.
Silence: Imagine that it is silent all around you - totally quiet. Silence is the center of language. - All you have to do now is notice youre breathing and notice the 3 centers - of your body, your emotions and your language. Open your eyes. You are centered. You are now in neutral; from here, your choices increase. You can "go" anywhere from here with grace and with ease. You are now equidistant linguistically, in your body and in

If I ask Indo-Fijians the significance of 14thMay, they may say, yes, of course, Rabukas coup in 1987. No, not that. I was thinking of something over a century before the coup I was thinking of 14thMay, 1879when the first ship load of Girmitiyas- Fijis indentured labourers arrived in Fiji at Levuka in the historic vessel, the Leonidas. I do not blame them for this as our school history fails to recognise and acknowledge this fact, which appear to have been stolen from successive Indo Fijian generations. This article is intended to enlighten and awaken the silent pride of Indo-Fijian Diaspora, and urge them to observe GIRMIT REMEMBRANCE DAY on 14 May of every year. During this Ram Naumi, as the Hindu Indo-Fijian Diaspora in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand and Fiji gathered at different Mandirs, Bhavans, temples, prayer houses and private homes to sing Ramayan and Ram Kirtans, please ponder this issue how come Indo Fijians were singing Ramayan in Hindi and maintaining their culture and religion? How come Indo-Fijian Diaspora is a pride to Hinduism among migrant Hindus? Who do you give credit for bringing and preserving Hindi language and Hinduism in Fiji? On Thanksgiving Day, Americans think of and honour those who sacrificed for America in creating a new homeland. On ANZAC Day (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) Kiwis and Aussies think of their soldiers who fought for their countries and gave their lives. On Waitangi Day, New Zealanders mark that as a nationbuilding day. Then why cannot we, Girmitiya descendant Indo-Fijians, set aside at least one day in a year to think and honour those who sacrificed their life for us and gave us this better life than they ever dreamed of? The tragedy of Indo- Fijians is that they lack selfless political or other forms of benevolent exemplary leadership. We have our so called crusaders of cane farmers and trade unionists, multitudes of qualified academics and professors. We have multitudes of prosperous Indo-Fijian lawyers made rich by a bickering Indo-Fijian community, yet how many have got the guts or human conscience to take the fight to seek redress from those who wronged us? What I suggest is that we need to tell our children and grandchildren about the stories of Girmit so that they know where they have descended from and how full of suffering has been those Girmit journeys in past centuries. To realise this dream, Auckland New Zealand Indo Fijians have taken steps to reconnect, reclaim and restore Indo-Fijian history. FIJI GIRMIT FOUNDATION NEW ZEALAND has been formed to regularly organize commemoration of Girmit in New Zealand every year. The Foundation is headed by former Deputy General Manager of Fiji Broadcasting Commission, Pundit Devakar Prasad (Chairperson) and other members include Thakur Ranjit Singh, (Secretary), Krish Naidu (Treasurer), former parliamentarians Master Shiu

Sailing ship Leonidas which sailed into Levuka on May 14 1879 (134 years ago).with the first shipload of Girmitiyas (Indentured Labourers) from India Charan and Sardar Harnam Singh Golian, author of Tears in Paradise and former Ba Town Clerk, Rajendra Prasad, Satya Dutt, Vijendra Prasad, Pradeep Chand (Manukau Sanatan) and Pundit Ram Kumar Sewak. May 14 is a significant day in the history of Indo-Fijian community, as it marks the arrival the first ship of Indian indentured labourers (Girmitiyas) in Fiji in 1879. It followed 86 other ships that brought 60,553 Girmitiyas to Fiji. It is the aim of the Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand to reconnect, reclaim and restore Indo-Fijian history, which is almost unknown to the new generation of Indo- Fijian community worldwide. The Foundation is organising Girmit Remembrance Day on Saturday 18 May, 2013 at Skipton ARST Hall, 53 Skipton Street, Mangere, Auckland, New Zealand. This event is organized to provide opportunity to every IndoFijian family to resurrect the memories and pay our respects to our Girmitiya forebears for the sacrifices that they made and the legacy that they left for successive generations. The days programme will remember suffering, sacrifices and vision of our forbears through oratory, poems, music and tales of the past. This will be a journey through memory lane which will provide exposure to a history that is dormant and yet it is a fascinating history of suffering, struggle and sacrifice. It is a fervent hope of the Foundation that such activities would assist in restoration of Indo-Fijian history; not only in New Zealand, but everywhere Indo-Fijians are settled. Hence, the theme for this years commemoration is: Ek Shaam Girmiyon ke Naam (An afternoon dedicated to the memory of Indentured Labourers Girmitiyas): RECONNECTING, RECLAIMING AND RESTORING INDO-FIJIAN HISTORY The Foundation intends to strengthen our unique Indo-Fijian culture, language, customs and traditions to ensure that our children remain connected to the jewels of their inheritance. Help of Radio stations and other media have been sought to reach people. It is hoped, in a small way, the initiative, foresight and vision
of Aucklanders are going to inspire our Indo Fijian Diaspora in Canada (Vancouver, Surrey, Calgary, Toronto etc), USA (San Francisco, Sacramento, Modesto Hayward etc), Australia (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne etc) and even in Fiji to appreciate that we get organised and tell our new generation the tales of Girmit that history has failed to acknowledge. management group has to roll up its sleeves and get to work orchestrating a deal that will alter the look and feel of the hockey club. Sometimes risk works out in your favour and sometimes it doesnt, Gillis explained of his trade philosophy. In assessing the risk, youre always at the mercy of human frailty in this business. You do things to try to achieve and compete for the Stanley Cup that may not necessarily work out every time. But the ones that do work out are fantastic. In terms of bold moves, I think weve been prepared to act on every opportunity weve been presented. Were not afraid of making decisions; Im not afraid to make decisions in this business, but you do it with the understanding that some are going to work and some arent. During the past five years, Canucks fans have seen enough of deals that are oversold by the organization but ultimately underdeliver. In another sport, three strikesBallard, Booth, and Kassianand youre out. Sticking with the baseball analogy, Canucks management has to step up to the plate, swing for the fences, and knock a deal out of the park. Its likely the only way the Canucks can improve over the summer. Trades dont happen as often as they used to in hockey, but they do still occur. And its time for the Canucks to wheel and deal. A city, a franchiseand even Gilliss job securityare all depending on it.
Vodafone last Friday announced an increase in sponsorship for the upcoming Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament. Fiji Football Association received $65,000 sponsorship from Vodafone during the Fiji FACT pool draws held last Friday at the Vodafone headquarters in Tamavua. We are very happy that Vodafone is sponsoring the Fiji FACT tournament for another year and we are looking for a long term partnership with Vodafone and we are excited about it. This year we will have eight teams in action and 90 minutes football. We will also have four teams who will be taking part in the premier division, Rajesh Patel, the Fiji FA President said.
Rakiraki will be the team to watch in this years Vodafone Fiji FACT premier division competition. These were the words of their president ShaneelGoundar. We have got one of the best opportunities to play in the Fiji FACT tournament this year and we will come prepared. Rakiraki team has been performing really well in the tournaments and will have same players who have been representing the team in the league, Goundar said. The Western based team is gearing up to turn the tables against Lami, TailevuNaitaisri and Nasinu who will also play along with Rakiraki.
It will be a good exposure for us as we have included few youth players in the team. The 90 minutes match would not be tough for us as the boys have been playing well in the Premier division league. It will be the good exposure and morale booster for the young players playing in the tournament despite the financial problems we are facing at the moment. Goundar said. The winner in the Premier Division at the Vodafone Fiji FACT gets $1000 while the runner up gets $500. The Premier teams will be in action from 21st of next month at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

Suva Leads - Winning In Fiji Games
Suva won the 13th Fiji Games which ended last weekend. Suva managed 68 gold medals, 74 silver and 52 bronze medals in the three- day competition. Levuka was second on 20 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze. Nausori followed with 18 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze edging out Nadi 18 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals. The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee president Reg Sandy said many athletes competing at this Fiji Games are still in school. Our schools are a great incubator for sport and will need to be involved in talent identification and sports development programs if we are to excel in sport,Sandy said. I wish to acknowledge the important roles performed by coaches, the person who is the closest to the athlete. There is also a role to play by national institutions like FASANOC, the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the new Sports Commission and commercial sponsors. Sandy said all must play a part in producing our sporting heroes of the future. As the next generation of sporting young men and women, you the athlete represent our hopes for the future. Regardless of your results by taking part you have shown yourself to be true champions. I would like to thank the faceless volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make these Games a reality. FASANOC also thanked Olympic Solidarity for the financial support for the Fiji Games and to all competitors and the participating National Federations for the organisation of competition for each sport.
David Beckhams retirement marks a week of Manchester United greats deciding to end their most prominent football days. Beckham was not one of the worlds best players that is a well known fact but he is one of the worlds most recognized figures and a hero in England. The immediate reaction is a large number of flashbacks of memories for the national team. With 115 caps, Englands most capped outfield player leaves a playing career as one of the most famous football players the world has ever seen. From starting his career as one of Sir Alex Fergusons Class of 92 youngsters, he helped United to their 1990s domination, including that historic treble in 1999 where Beckham highlighted his most impressive of traits: his set-piece ability, as his two late corners resulted in United coming from behind to claim European glory. From his crossing ability to free kicks, Beckham has shone on the biggest stage. The immediate trend on Twitter in the UK was Greece, Purely because of the vast number of England fans who were getting flashbacks for

that almost magical last minute freekick which sent England to the 2002 World Cup. During the early 2000s, you could travel anywhere in the world and have a high chance of seeing someone wearing a Beckham shirt. Few sportsmen have been able to claim such global interest. Beckham has carried with him a glamour and flare throughout his career, and ends having won League titles in four different countries a feat no other British footballer has matched. Beckhams career is one that is seen as simply heroic and inspirational. From his dark days surrounding the red card at France in 98, he went on to captain his country and represent some of the biggest clubs in the world. Hes been a ambassador for the game across the globe, having helped kickstart MLS and been involved with all sorts of influential roles. Beckhams trophy cabinet shows that he has been one of football greats: a charismatic, hard-working hero. Its a shame to see Beckhams playing days end, but he goes out a winner, and rightly so. It wont be the last we see of Beckham in football and that highlights the mans influence.
