Dear Friends, I cant believe it is already time for the final concert of the Vetta season! Eugene Osadchy is back, as is Arthur Rowe who is no stranger to Vetta audiences. Eugene, Art and I performed this very program at the Jeffrey Concert Series in London Ontario in 2012, and it was then I decided we needed to play the same repertoire here for the home team. The two movement Haydn Trio is nicknamed Jacobs Dream. The allusion to a ladder stretching up to heaven was Haydn's humorous attempt to cure a German amateur violinist of his propensity to play very high notes in the vicinity of the bridge The second movement includes a number of unusually high pitches in the violin part (unusual for the times I should say) in a fast sequence which was supposedly too difficult for this pompous fiddler! The first movement is wonderfully soulful. Brahms wrote the C minor piano Trio in the late period of his compositions, and I love that he never wastes a note. Brahms knew so well how to write for these three instruments, and it is one of my favourite pieces to perform. Turbulent, tragic and yet stylish, I would say. Schubert, on the other hand, luxuriates in restating his themes simply because they are beautiful. We can go back to a time when leisure meant no hurries, no worries! Yes, he is expressing dramatic, sad, even angry feelings, but the point is to express them with utter beauty. Brochures will be available for next season, so be sure to pick one up for yourself and a couple for some friends that might be interested. Because we spend so little on advertising, we really do rely on word of mouth to spread the word. I also promised the board that I would ask you, if you havent already done so, to please consider a donation to Vetta Chamber Music. Grants are down again this year, and in order to continue bringing you chamber music in an intimate setting, we are having to rely more and more on your donations. Yours in Music, Joan Blackman
