MARSHAL
T
he Huntington Beach Fourth of July Execu-
tive Board has named long-time resident,
Ralph Bauer, to serve as Community Grand
Marshal for the 109th Annual 4th of July Parade
and Celebration.
For the past forty-six years, Bauer has taken part
in creating and contributing to countless commu-
nity efforts, activities and innovations. His tireless
generosity to the city was celebrated last June 16th
with the opening of the 2-acre Ralph Bauer Park.
The recreational open space is near the corner of
Newland and Hamilton in the new Pacific Shores
residential development.

Find a Funky
Urban Nest
G
et the kids and your camera and have
some fun...Whether you find a robin's
nest on a statue or a hummingbird's nest
on wind chimes, your picture of a bird nest in a
funky place can win big in the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology's Funky Nests in Funky Places con-
test. With nesting season underway, this contest
challenges everyone to get outside and watch na-
ture in even the most unexpected places.
"Just start looking," says Karen Purcell, who
created the contest several years ago as part of
the Cornell Lab's Celebrate Urban Birds citizen-
science project. "Past experience has shown us
you can find bird nests in the most surprising
places. We've seen them in helmets, old boots,
s t o p l i g h t s ,
store signs,
car tires,
clotheslines,
ma i l b o x e s ,
potted plants,
and even a
stuffed moose
head!"
The Funky
Nests contest
begins May 1
and lasts until
June 15. En-
tries may be
photos, videos, artwork, poems, or stories. You
don't have to be a bird expert or an expert pho-
tographer. People of all ages are welcome to par-
ticipate as individuals or with a class,
community center, or afterschool pro-
gram. Prizes include binoculars, bird
feeders, cameras, an iPad, and more.
Entry deadline is June 15.

Celebrate Urban Birds is a free, year-round
project that focuses on the arts, creating green
spaces for birds, and learning how birds use
urban spaces.
A Few Funky Facts About Nests:
Most common backyard birds lay two to
eight eggs. Hatching usually begins about two
weeks after the last egg is
laid and it takes another two
weeks before the young are
ready to leave the nest.
Even if a nest has been
built in a somewhat incon-
venient place (for you), be
patient! In a few weeks the
birds will be gone. Mean-
while, you get a front-row
seat to a wonder of nature.
Baby birds have brightly
colored beaks that help par-
ents hit the bull's-eye with
food!
For their first three days of life, nestling pi-
geons depend solely on "pigeon milk," a liquid
loaded with protein and fat that is produced by
both the mother and father!

2013, two gliders (one pictured here underwater)

(Phys.org) Once the robotic gliders scour the ocean
searching for potential harm to sea life, the data is sent to
David Caron, professor of biological sciences in USC
Dornsife, and other marine biologists. They use the infor-
mation to spot dangers such as toxic algal blooms.
It was an unforgettable spring morning in 2011 when
residents of King Harbor in Redondo Beach, Calif., awoke
to find millions of dead anchovies, sardines and mackerel
packed into the marina. The stench was strong enough to
make even the
most seasoned
sailor sick.
The incident

is unfortunately
not the first oc-
currence of se-
vere losses of
marine life, and
as a response,
Ph.D. students
at the USC
Viterbi School of Engineering's Robotic Embedded Sys-
tems Laboratory are programming underwater robotic
gliders that roam the seas, gathering vital information to
help scientists predict severe losses of marine life.
"Robots and other kinds of sensors can help us under-
stand these kinds of phenomenon," said Arvind Pereira, a
fifth-year Ph.D. candidate studying computer science. "We
are determined to dive deep into the ocean and discover
what really happens to a given population."
Pereira is the lead student researcher on the glider ex-
pedition, a project overseen by professor Gaurav
Sukhatme, chair of the Department of Computer Science.
Pereira and his fellow students use funds from the Na-
tional Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National Sci-
ence Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
NASA and the Office of Naval Research to purchase glid-
ers from a manufacturer. Each glider costs about
$120,000.
In February, Pereira's team
launched two gliders into the
ocean: one between USC
Dornsife's Wrigley
Marine Science
Center on Catalina
Island and Port Fur-
man and the other
just off the coast of
Huntington Beach.
The battery-pow-
ered gliders spend
their days on patrol,
gathering informa-
tion about the
ocean's oxygen level,
temperature, salinity and other
characteristics. At night, the
gliders travel to the ocean sur-
face and transmit the data to
various base stations on the
shore.

way to eradicate trillions of dollars of debt

If a seven year old boy can be thrown out
of school for saying his teacher "cute," but
hosting a sexual exploration or diversity class
in grade school is perfectly acceptable ... you

If children are forcibly removed from
parents who discipline them with spankings
while children of addicts are left in filth and
drug infested homes... you might live in

If hard work and success are met with
higher taxes and more government intrusion,
while not working is rewarded with EBT
cards, WIC checks, Medicaid, subsidized
housing and free cell phones ... you might

If the government's plan for getting people
back to work is to incentivize NOT working
with 99 weeks of unemployment checks and
no requirement to prove they applied but
cant find work ... you might live in a country

If being stripped of the ability to defend
yourself makes you more "safe" according to
the government ... you might live in a country
founded by geniuses but run by idiots.

Whittier, CA-- What do a 22-foot long
hotel bar, a milkshake-maker, a Shirley
Temple Doll and the actual clothes Eddie
Munster wore on his hit TV series have in
common?
They all can be seen at Chuck and
Martha Garcera's astonishing museum of
antiques, collectibles and souvenirs from
the past, better known as King Richard's
Antique Center.
The largest business of its kind in Cali-
fornia is housed in a beautiful 47,000-
square-foot former citrus packing house,
built 110 years ago.
The incredible place is not only an ex-
citing museum with free admission but its
nostalgic exhibits--supplied by more than
160 vendors--are for sale.
"On a Saturday, we may have 400 guests,"
said Chuck, a retired aerospace project man-
ager, who owns the business. "Seventy per-
cent of these folks are regulars. We've really
noticed the younger generation getting in-
volved in vintage collecting."
No wonder! You could spend hours, en-
joyably wandering through the four levels,
where some floors show off their spectac-
ular original wood. Historical photos doc-
ument the citrus being packed in the same
building but today the structure seems to
be chockfull of everything you can imag-
ine, plus a whole lot more.
"Some of the hottest items aren't just an-
tiques but newer things like our industrial
art section with vintage lighting and our
vintage-looking rattan, bamboo and wicker
furniture," said Chuck, whose impressive
business has been seen in several films, in-
cluding Barter Kings and Past Due.
One of the most popular parts of the nos-
talgia factory is Munsters Store, featuring
items from the hit 1960s TV show, includ-
ing outfits Actor Butch Patrick (Eddie)
wore, a prop jacket used by Herman Mun-
ster, autographed photos of the stars, Mun-
ster (baseball-type) Cards, Munster Comic
Books, a teapot (with Certificate of Au-
thenticity) used in the show, dolls of the
stars and more.
A large screen constantly replays
episodes from The Munsters series. Visi-
tors walking nearby hear the popular TV
show theme or Eddie Munster and his fam-
ily's voices and flock to the store.
"Everyone smiles when they enter the
room," said Don Boyer, a nationally-
known motivational speaker and author,
who owns the business with Patrick. "It
takes many back to the fun times of their
childhood."
Several times a year, Butch, who also
starred in "Bonanza," "I Dream of Jeannie"
and other shows, stops by to sign auto-
graphs and chat with fans from yesteryear.
On a room wall is a photo of Eddie
Munster with a "Wolf Wolf" doll from the
series. In the store, you can purchase one
of 100 "Wolf Wolf" dolls created in recent
years. "It's a real collectible because only
100 were made, then the mold was bro-
ken," Don explained.
The antiques center has so many fasci-
nating items for sale that it's impossible to
describe them all but here are a few of the
things that might tickle your fancy: a
stained glass door, candy vending ma-
chine, slot machines, 4 glass panel Chinese
divider, unicycle, old-fashioned film pro-
jectors, gigantic commercial signs (i.e.,
"Taste a LegendBass Imported English
Ale"), a shoeshine box, rare telephones, an
Emmett Kelly Jr. Circus Train, numerous
unique lamps of all shapes and sizes (one
with an abacus as its base; another a
woman harpist), a movie poster for Repub-
lic's No Man's Woman," comic books,
Victrola 78 RPM Record Player, furniture
of every kind, vintage clothing, Fine
China, English and American Silver, a bar-
ber chair and so very, very much more.
They also have on-site, a Jeweler, Clock
Repair, a College of Appraisers and clean
Rest Rooms. At the front desk, you also
can purchase a fascinating map, "Native
Son Richard Nixon's Southern California,"
which cleverly illustrates places and amaz-
ing details about the Whittier lawyer who
became America's 37th President.
You've definitely need to check out the
entire former Whittier Citrus Association
Packing House to see just how incredible
it is.
Friendly Manager Gloria Salazar, a for-
mer customer, has worked there 21 years.
The entire staff is delightful. We can see
why King Richards (named for an original
owner over 30 years ago), should be a
"must see" on your itinerary!

Dog Surfing Competition Brings
Wags and Waves...
T
he Surf City Surf Dog contest
in Huntington Beach is a char-
ity fundraiser with a serious
edge; dogs even can get one-on-one
surfing lessons leading up to the an-
nual competition.
Kristin R. Jackson was barking up
the right tree when she wrote..."IT'S
SO PERFECTLY Southern Califor-
nia, surfing with a dog. And Hanzo,
a boxer, is a real sports-dog; he skate-
boards as well as surfs.
The sturdy Hanzo surfs competi-
tively, too, catching the waves with
47 other canines at the annual Surf
City Surf Dog contest in Huntington
Beach last year. It's a fun charity
fundraiser with a serious edge; dogs
even can get one-on-one surfing les-
sons leading up to the annual con-
test.
The pooches compete based on
their weight class; they're judged on
the length of ride, wave size and if
they stand on the surfboard on all
four paws. And, yes, they all wear
doggy life jackets.
Who was the winner? None other
than Hanzo, both in the extra-large
category and as the crowd-pleaser.
And there was a crowd. More than
2,500 people came to the Surf Dog
weekend for a canine costume show,
pet expo and, most of all, to see the
"surFurs" ride the waves."

A Final Toast:
Doolittle Raiders
It's the cup of brandy that no one wants to drink.
On Tuesday, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, the surviv-
ing Doolittle Raiders will gather publicly for the last time.
They once were among the most universally admired
and revered men in the United States. There were 80 of
the Raiders in April 1942, when they carried out one of
the most courageous and heart-stirring military opera-
tions in this nation's history. The mere mention of their
unit's name, in those years, would bring tears to the eyes
of grateful Americans.
Now only four survive.
After Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, with the
United States reeling and wounded, something dramatic
was needed to turn the war effort around.
Even though there were no friendly airfields close
enough to Japan for the United States to launch a retali-
ation, a daring plan was devised. Sixteen B-25s were
modified so that they could take off from the deck of an
aircraft carrier. This had never before been tried -- send-
ing such big, heavy bombers from a carrier.
The 16 five-man crews, under the command of Lt. Col.
James Doolittle, who himself flew the lead plane off the
USS Hornet, knew that they would not be able to return
to the carrier. They would have to hit Japan and then hope
to make it to China for a safe landing.
But on the day of the raid, the Japanese military caught
wind of the plan. The Raiders were told that they would
have to take off from much farther out in the Pacific
Ocean than they had counted on. They were told that be-
cause of this they would not have enough fuel to make it
to safety.
And those men went anyway.
They bombed Tokyo, and then flew as far as they
could. Four planes crash-landed; 11 more crews bailed
out, and three of the Raiders died. Eight more were cap-
tured; three were executed. Another died of starvation in
a Japanese prison camp. One crew made it to Russia.
The Doolittle Raid sent a message from the United
States to its enemies, and to the rest of the world:
We will fight.
And, no matter what it takes, we will win.
Of the 80 Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were cel-
ebrated as national heroes, models of bravery. Metro-
Goldwyn-Mayer produced a motion picture based on the
raid; "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," starring Spencer
Tracy and Van Johnson, was a patriotic and emotional
box-office hit, and the phrase became part of the national
lexicon. In the movie-theater previews for the film,
MGM proclaimed that it was presenting the story "with
supreme pride."
Beginning in 1946, the surviving Raiders have held a
reunion each April, to commemorate the mission. The re-
union is in a different city each year. In 1959, the city of
Tucson, Arizona, as a gesture of respect and gratitude,
presented the Doolittle Raiders with a set of 80 silver
goblets. Each goblet was engraved with the name of a
Raider.
Every year, a wooden display case bearing all 80
goblets is transported to the reunion city. Each time a
Raider passes away, his goblet is turned upside down
in the case at the next reunion, as his old friends bear
solemn witness.
Also in the wooden case is a bottle of 1896 Hennessy
Very Special cognac. The year is not happenstance: 1896
was when Jimmy Doolittle was born.
There has always been a plan: When there are only two
surviving Raiders, they would open the bottle, at last
drink from it, and toast their comrades who preceded
them in death.
As 2013 began, there were five living Raiders; then, in
February, Tom Griffin passed away at age 96.
What a man he was. After bailing out of his plane over
a mountainous Chinese forest after the Tokyo raid, he be-
came ill with malaria, and almost
died. When he recovered, he was sent to Europe to fly
more combat missions. He was shot down, captured, and
spent 22 months in a German prisoner of war camp.
The selflessness of these men, the sheer guts ... there
was a passage in the Cincinnati Enquirer obituary for Mr.
Griffin that, on the surface, had nothing to do with the
war, but that emblematizes the depth of his sense of duty
and devotion:
"When his wife became ill and needed to go into a
nursing home, he visited her every day. He walked from
his house to the nursing home, fed his wife and at the end
of the day brought home her clothes. At night, he washed
and ironed her clothes. Then he walked them up to her
room the next morning. He did that for three years until
her death in 2005."
So now, out of the original 80, only four Raiders re-
main: Dick Cole (Doolittle's co-pilot on the Tokyo raid),
Robert Hite, Edward Saylor and David Thatcher. All are
in their 90s. They have decided that there are too few of
them for the public reunions to continue.
The events in Fort Walton Beach this week will mark
the end. It has come full circle; Florida's nearby Eglin
Field was where the Raiders trained in secrecy for the
Tokyo mission.
The town is planning to do all it can to honor the men:
a six-day celebration of their valor, including luncheons,
a dinner and a parade.
Do the men ever wonder if those of us for whom they
helped save the country have tended to it in a way that
is worthy of their sacrifice? They don't talk about that,
at least not around other people. But if you find your-
self near Fort Walton Beach this week, and if you
should encounter any of the Raiders, you might want
to offer them a word of thanks. I can tell you from first-
hand observation that they appreciate hearing that they
are remembered.
The men have decided that after this final public re-
union they will wait until a later date -- some time this
year -- to get together once more, informally and in ab-
solute privacy. That is when they will open the bottle of
brandy. The years are flowing by too swiftly now; they
are not going to wait until there are only two of them.
They will fill the four remaining upturned goblets.
And raise them in a toast to those who are gone.

beach...now that's an interesting
franchise trend.
The Granite Bay-based company
has a new franchise that just opened in
Newport Beach and another store is set to open in
Huntington Beach. Both cities are surf spots, so its
a good fit with the surf-themed sandwich shops.
The Huntington Beach store is set to open May
29, and will be located at: Huntington Beach
19021-B Beach Blvd. Huntington Beach, Califor-
nia 92648.
Also Dana Point store is in the works for this
summer, with another franchisee signed for Fresno.
Now in its 33rd year, Beach Hut started as a sand-

he Air Force officer in charge of
the military branch's sexual assault
prevention program was ar-
rested for sexual assault,
ARLNow reported Monday.
Stars and Stripes con-
firmed that Lt. Col Jeffrey
Krusinski, the chief of the
Air Force Sexual Assault
Prevention and Response
program, was arrested early
Sunday in Arlington, Va.
The police press release
reads:
On May 5 at 12:35 am, a
drunken male subject approached a fe-
male victim in a parking lot and
grabbed her breasts and buttocks. The
victim fought the suspect off as he at-
tempted to touch her again and alerted
police. Jeffrey Krusinski, 41, of Ar-
lington, VA, was arrested and charged
with sexual battery. He was held on a
$5,000 unsecured bond.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP)
USA Water Polo has hired former Serbian
coach Dejan Udovicic to turn around the
men's national team after a disappointing
Olympics.
He will serve as head coach through the
2016 Rio Games. His hiring was announced
Tuesday.
Udovicic guided Serbia to a bronze medal
at the London Olympics, where the U.S. men
finished eighth under coach Terry Schroeder.
Udovicic has compiled nearly 500 career
victories and won 80 percent of all matches.
He served as Serbia's coach for six years, in-
cluding winning the 2009 world champi-
onships, two FINA World Cup titles, two
European championships, and bronze medals
at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
USA Water Polo CEO Christopher Ramsey
says Udovicic is a proven winner who builds
programs and develops talent.
Udovicic will make his coaching debut
with the U.S. men at the World League Super
Final in June in Russia.

been making
headlines lately,
which is never good news for the league or the
men in blue.
First, Tom Hallion was fined an undisclosed
amount after initiating a verbal spat with Tampa
Rays pitcher David Price. Hallion rebuked Price
for his reaction to a pitch call during a game on
April 28. Price told reporters that as he walked
off the mound at the end of the inning, Hallion
yelled at him throw the (bleeping) ball over the
plate.
Back and forth comments in the media and on
Twitter included a charge by Hallion that Price
was a liar. Price countered by accusing Hal-
lion of being a coward. MLB fined Price $1,000
for violating the leagues social media policy.
In addition, they took the unusual action of an-
nouncing that Hallion was also fined an undis-
closed amount.
A week later, in a game between Cleveland
and Oakland, umpire Angel Hernandez elected
not to reverse a non-home run call in the ninth
inning after a video review. The video clearly
showed that a ball hit by As infielder Adam
Rosales should have been a game-
tying home run. After reviewing
the video himself, MLB executive
vice president Joe Torre didnt
mince words, saying in reference
to Hernandez call, We screwed
it up.
Little did anyone know that
things were about to get even
worse for the umpires. A day
after Hernandez gaffe, Fieldin
Culbreth allowed Houstons
rookie manager, Bo Porter, to
make an illegal pitching change during a game
against Anaheim. Culbreth and his crew misin-
terpreted an MLB rule and permitted the pitch-
ing change after Angels manager Mike Scioscia
sent up a pinch hitter.
Torre had seen enough. He suspended Culbreth
for two games and fined each member of his crew
an undisclosed amount. Culbreth, who has a rep-
utation as a good umpire, was sincerely repen-
tant. I want to apologize to the whole crewI
feel bad I put (the umpires) in that position.
So whats going on here? Is this an indication
that MLB umpiring is deteriorating? Oh, there
are a handful of umpires, Hernandez among
them, who have no business being in the Major
Leagues. Others could definitely benefit from an
attitude readjustment and anger management
training (that includes you, Tom Hallion). But
the overwhelming majority of MLB umpires are
victims of their own competence. They are so
good that we hardly notice themuntil they
commit an error or blow a call thats seen by the
entire world, thanks to video replay and hind-
sight. Then we all scream at them and demand
more replay.
The goal of the umpiring crew should be to get
the call right, by whatever means necessary. The
game of baseball and the umpires themselves are
both better off when what the umpires do or
dont do is not news.

y The Main Street Branch Library is the largest and oldest branch
of the Huntington Beach Library system, opening its doors on Sep-
tember 30, 1951. Built as a replacement for the Citys Carnegie
Library, which had been in operation since 1913, the 4,500 square foot
building at 525 Main Street in Triangle Park
was designed by the Los Angeles ar-
chitectural firm of McLel-
lan, MacDonald and
Marcwith. The mid-cen-
tury modern building cost
$140,000 and served as
the Citys main library for
24 years until the Central
Library in Huntington
Central Park was opened
in 1975. On April 16,
2013, the library building
on Triangle Park was
listed on the National Reg-
ister of Historic Places by
the National Park Service.
Today, the Main Street
Branch continues to serve
the Citys downtown com-
munity with 26,000 books,
free weekly storytimes, public-in-
ternet computers for library card holders,
free Wi-Fi, and an ongoing used book sale. For

Pasadena, CA--Pacific Asia Mu-
seum is looking for enthusiastic
new docents to act as leaders, teach-
ers, communicators, and inter-
preters. Museum docents are
essential to Pacific Asia Museum's
commi t ment
to sharing the
arts and cul-
tures of Asia
with the com-
munity, and
lead a variety
of student and
adult tours
throughout the
year.

tend an Open
House to learn
more about the program and meet
current docents on Tuesday, May
21 at 10 a.m. RSVPs are encour-

Only offered every other year,
Pacific Asia Museum's docent
training program is an in-depth im-
mersion in Asian art and culture
that lasts six months. The 2013-14
training sessions are held every
Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
September 2013 through February
2014 (there are no meetings in De-
cember). Training includes lec-
tures, gallery training, and home-
work. Upon completion, the
trainees will be able to success-
fully tour groups of students and
adults through the museum's gal-
leries, which focus on South,
Southeast and East Asia and the Pa-
cific Islands, with a deep knowl-
edge of art history as well as the
particular objects in the Pacific Asia
Museum collection.
Applicants are asked to make a
three-year commitment to touring
at least once a month at Pacific Asia
Museum on weekday mornings,
and additional weekend tours are
occasionally available.
Pacific Asia Museum's docent
training program is an exciting way
to gain a greater knowledge of
Asian art and culture with other en-
thusiastic, like-minded people. For

an McPherson tells us ..."The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) has agreed a multi-year
broadcast deal with CBS Sports Network and CBS Interactive for rights to the AVP Pro Beach Vol-
leyball Tour in the US.
CBS will provide live coverage of the mens and womens championship rounds from each of the
tours five stops in Salt Lake City, Utah; Cincinnati, Ohio; St. Petersburg, Florida; and Santa Barbara
and Huntington Beach, California while CBS Interactive will offer a live stream of the preliminary
rounds from each event on AVP.com.
The deal marks the tours return to TV, having been without a broadcast deal since 2010.
We are excited to launch 2013 with an incredible roster of athletes and a solid five-city tour schedule,
said Dick Carle, chairman of the AVP. We have set ourselves up to provide a thrilling and competitive

The 2013 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour is set to begin on 16th August, with its season finale in
Huntington Beach on 20th October.
On May 7, 2013, at about 2:40 a.m., the Huntington Beach Police
Department received a report of a traffic collision on Beach Boulevard
north of Edinger Avenue. The arriving officers discovered the pedestrian
victim, a 34 year old female, injured and unconscious in the roadway.
Initial investigation shows the pedestrian was walking east across
Beach Boulevard under the 405 Freeway overpass, when she was struck
by a white 2013 Honda Accord being driven by a 36 year old male from
Garden Grove. The Honda had been travelling north on Beach Boule-
vard. After being struck by the Honda, the pedestrian got up and ran
south on Beach Boulevard, where she was struck a second time by a
blue 2002 Dodge Caravan being driven by a 26 year old male from
Huntington Beach. The Dodge also had been travelling north on Beach
Boulevard.
The female pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was treated on
scene by Huntington Beach Fire Department paramedics. She was trans-
ported to the hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
HBPD Accident Reconstruction Officers responded to the collision
scene and conducted the initial investigation. This is an ongoing inves-
tigation and the Huntington Beach Police Department is seeking wit-
nesses regarding this incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the
collision is encouraged to contact Officer Barr at 714-536-5666.

10. The Bulldog
The Bulldog has a sturdy build that is perfect for kids
who like to roughhouse. However, it won't win any awards
for "most energetic dog." A docile, friendly and loyal dog,
the Bulldog gets along well with other pets and dogs, too.
The Bulldog is comfortable living in large houses as well
as small apartments.
9. The Bull Terrier
Unfairly branded as an aggressive breed, the Bull Terrier
was actually bred to be a companion dog friendly and
loving towards grown-ups and kids alike. This well-framed
dog also has a high threshold for pain, making it perfect for
rambunctious children who are learning how to properly
treat dogs.
8. The Beagle
While your Beagle most likely won't have a bird named
Woodstock as his best friend, you can still name him (or her)
Snoopy. Originally kept as hunting dogs, Beagles fit well in
homes with active kids, as they are sturdily built and are never
too tired to play a game.
Smart, friendly, and happy, the Beagle usually gets along
with other pets, too (except for a bit of chasing here and
there). They do shed fairly heavily, however, and require
frequent brushing and bathing.
7. The Collie
This is the dog breed that "Lassie" made famous. Collies
are a very gentle and predictable breed, easily trainable and
rarely aggressive which is perfect for families who are
unfamiliar with dogs.
6. The Newfoundland
Nicknamed "Natures Babysitter" (think "Nana" from
Peter Pan), the Newfoundland dog loves children and is
very protective over them. Gentle, kind, and patient, this
breed is almost like the Mother Teresa of dogs. Both young
and old will quickly fall in love with this wonderfully
sweet, large dog.
5. The Vizsla
This may be a breed you haven't heard of before, but
because of its need for regular exercise, its actually one
best dog breeds for active and energetic families with older
kids. The Vizsla has a lively disposition but a
gentle manner; it is loyal and affectionate.
Additionally, it is obedient, confident and
smart, forming close bonds with its family
and able to learn new tricks quickly. Best of
all, the Vizsla has very little "doggy" smell
about it.
4. Irish Setter
Known for its red coat, the Irish Setter is
playful, energetic, loves being around people,
and plays well with children. This doggy
needs lots of exercise, and is a good match for
energetic kids and active families. A smart
and trainable companion, the Irish Setter is
especially perfect for people with a yard.
3. The Poodle
Often given rather curious haircuts by their
owners, the Poodle is a very smart and gentle
dog. Its also great for kids with allergies, as
it sheds very little. It does, however, require
scheduled grooming, or its hair will get out of
control. This is a proud and elegant dog that
is both caring and loyal.
Seldom annoyed or bored, the Poodle's
good nature, friendly demeanor and patience
make it an excellent playing partner for a
child.
2. Labrador Retriever
This is one of the most popular dog breeds
in the U.S., and for good reason. The
Labrador Retriever is playful, patient, loving, protective and
reliable. In fact, its sweet personality and intelligence is only
matched by its beauty. What does this mean for you? It means
the perfect family pet.

Not as big in size as the Lab, the Golden Retriever is a con-

Dear EarthTalk:
The recent explosion
at a West, Texas fertil-
izer plant that killed many
people really alarmed me. Places
like this must exist near many communities around the
country. How do I know if my own community might be
at risk of a similar disaster? ~ Mary Cyr, Sarasota, FL
Many people may not realize that what happened on
April 17, 2013 in the town of West, Texasa fertilizer
plant with an unreported large stockpile of explosive am-
monium nitrate blew up, killing 14 and rendering hun-
dreds of others injured and homelesscould happen
almost anywhere.
According to Greenpeace, one in three Americans could
fall victim to a similar poison gas disaster by virtue of liv-
ing near upwards of 12,000 plants that store and use highly
toxic substances. A chemical disaster at just one of these
facilities could kill or injure thousands of people with acute
poisoning, the group reports. Greenpeace has identified
483 U.S. facilities where 100,000 people or more would be
at risk during a disaster. And one in five of those threatens
areas with populations topping one million.
Even though chemical plant safeguards fail every week,
the chemical industry has largely refused to make their
plants safer and more secure, says Greenpeace. Congress
even amended the Clean Air Act in 1990 to try and address
this problem, but the amendment has gone largely unused.
The group would like to see the Obama Administration cre-
ate new regulations under the Clean Air Act that will re-
quire such facilities to prevent chemical disasters by
switching to safer alternatives.

mine whether they live
in harms way of a poten-
tially dangerous chemi-
cal plant. Each plant on
the map is surrounded
by a red circle marking
its vulnerability zone,
which ranges from less
than a mile to 25 miles
out, depending on the
type and extent of chem-
icals in use as well as
local topography and
weather patterns. Any-
one within this zone
could potentially be im-
pacted by a toxic chemi-
cal release, adds
Greenpeace. Impacts
could range from minor
injury to fatality depend-
ing on the chemical involved and the extent of exposure.
Calls by the Department of Homeland Security and En-
vironmental Protection Agency to require the use of safer
chemical processes where feasible have fallen on deaf ears
among Congressional Republicans loathe to require con-
stituents to pay for costly environmental upgrades. But that
could soon change: Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) has
introduced a bill that would make negligence regarding
chemical reporting a federal crime with consequent harsh
penalties. The chemical reporting laws on the books today
are toothless and do little to help us protect communities
from chemical explosions, says Lautenberg. Facilities
that break the reporting rules today essentially get away
with just a warning.
The good news is that there are many cost-effective,
safer chemical processes already in use that eliminate these
risks without sacrificing jobs, says Greenpeace, adding
that more than 500 plants have voluntarily switched to safer
alternatives over the last decade. The group wants President
Obama to invoke executive privilege to tighten regulations
on chemical plants that have not done so. Readers can sign
on to the groups online petition calling on the White House
to require companies to design and operate chemical facil-
ities in a way that prevents the catastrophic release of poi-
son gases.

David White, a wine writer, is the founder

"Is a bottle of wine ever really worth $100?"
This is a question I'm regularly asked by
friends who aren't obsessed with wine. My an-
swer is always the same.
"Of course," I begin. "For starters, there's supply and
demand -- bottles sell for what the market says they're
worth."
"But to your real question," I continue, "no one is
dropping that sort of money simply because a wine
tastes so good. On those special occasions when you
splurge -- whether for a $25 bottle, a $50 bottle, or even
something that costs $100 or more -- you're hoping for
something beyond deliciousness. You're hoping for a
wine that makes
you think."
Regardless of a
wine's price tag,
this answer helps
explain how wine
enthusiasts ap-
proach wine.
Those of us who
obsess over what
we drink aren't
just looking for
something tasty;
we're looking for
an experience.
Whether a bottle
costs $15 or $150, we're hoping for something great.
And a great wine makes you think.
This concept was made clearer last month while lis-
tening to Abe Schoener, an iconoclastic California
winemaker, deliver a lecture in Washington, DC.
Until 1998, Schoener was a professor of ancient
Greek philosophy at St. John's College in Maryland.
That year, he headed to the Bay Area for a sabbatical
and met John Kongsgaard, a Napa Valley vintner who
was quickly gaining a reputation for making interesting
wines. Kongsgaard's children were interested in St.
John's, so the two men linked up. They quickly hit it
off. Even though Schoener didn't plan on staying in
Northern California, he soon became Kongsgaard's
protg.
Fast-forward 15 years, and Schoener is still in Cali-
fornia. He makes wine as if he's still a philosophy pro-
fessor, now teaching students about the limits and
possibilities of wine. Like a vinous Socrates, Schoener
explores wine by constantly questioning established
conventions.
Unsurprisingly,
the results -- bottled
as the Scholium
Project -- are ex-
tremely unusual.
The name is derived
from the Greek word
for "school" or
"scholar," so quite
literally, the wines
are a scholarly en-
deavor. Some are
hits; some are
misses. All make
you think.
Thanks to the
wines -- and a captivating personality -- Schoener has
developed somewhat of a cult following. So he's tour-
ing the country on a sold-out lecture series. In Wash-
ington, Schoener asked attendees to ponder several oil
paintings from the National Gallery of Art as he dis-
cussed "precision and transparency in winemaking."
That Schoener's lecture would spark a dialogue about
the purpose of wine isn't surprising. Nor is such a dia-
logue unusual. Consider the wisdom of legendary
winemaker Jacques Lardire, who recently retired after
42 years with Maison Louis Jadot in Burgundy.
"When you drink
wine, you must realize
you are drinking some-
thing more than wine,"
Lardire explained to a
recent gathering of
oenophiles in New York
City. "It's a very medi-
tative beverage."
That meditative ele-
ment is what inspires and fascinates wine enthusiasts.
Obviously, a delicious wine doesn't have to make
you think. Inexpensive New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc,
Provenal Ros, and reasonably priced Argentine Mal-
bec are just some examples of wines that are typically
consumed thoughtlessly.
And there are many unappetizing wines that demand
contemplation. For my palate, some skin-fermented
whites and purposefully oxidized wines fit this bill. So
do a few of Abe Schoener's projects.
Great wines are both delicious and thought-provok-
ing. That combination is what wine enthusiasts seek,
regardless of price.
One might compare this pursuit to music. It'd be hard
to contend that listening to a song is worth much more
than a dollar -- iTunes' highest priced songs are $1.29.
But virtually everyone is willing to pay a premium to
see his favorite artist perform live. Bruce Springsteen's
newest album, "Wrecking Ball," can be purchased for
$13; tickets during his recent tour were priced at $98
each. At Springsteen concerts, attendees undoubtedly
get their money's worth.
Next time you pull a cork, think about what you're
drinking. Perhaps you'll discover a great wine.

eres a talker for you right in time for Mothers Day. A just re-
leased survey by a local agency reveals 70% of adult children
dont want their parents moving in with them. But if they had
to choose, 67% (2 out of 3) would overwhelmingly choose to move in
their mom over their dad.
Why Mom over Dad? Most of the 1,100 people polled say Mom
would help more with cooking, cleaning and the kids. While Dad has
worse hygiene, is lazier and sloppier than Mom, is more likely to say
inappropriate things, and controls the TV more often.
Most surveyed say they have no plan whatsoever to take care of their
aging parent/s. And 2/3 say they cant afford to move in their parents,
but theyd take them in regardless. Read the survey to find out if a big-
ger chunk of the inheritance is a motivator for folks
to move in their parents. And check out which sib-
ling the family says should take on most responsi-
bility for Mom and Dad. Is it the sibling with the
most money? The sibling who got the most as a
child?
The survey was commissioned by Visiting An-
gels, one of our nations largest in-home senior care
companies, with an office in your area. They send
caregivers into seniors homes to help with errands
like light housekeeping, medication dispensing,
and dinner preparation. For many, this is a preferred
alternative to moving Mom and Dad in or sending
them to a nursing home.

While you never sleep in a
house before you buy it...perhaps you
have more option when making that
other large purchase..."With so many op-
tions for car shopping online and a gen-
eral disdain for the dealership experience,
consumers are willing to buy a new car -
- the second most expensive purchase for
most people -- without actually testing it
out first.
This is a disturbing trend, as no matter
how good a car may look on paper or
how well it is received by critics, con-
sumers can still find crucial flaws with a
certain car during the test drive -- me-
chanical, personal or otherwise.
The reality is there is no replacement
for testing out a car, despite having so
many shopping tools at one's fingertips.
We absolutely recommend that you use
our shopping tools to do your research,
but you need to actually experience a car
yourself.
If you're unsure of what to do or what
to expect during a test drive, click
through to see how you should evaluate
a car. You don't have to be a pro to make
the right decision.
1. Take your time
Remember, buying a new car is a
major decision that involves a lot of
money. And seeing as you'll most likely
keep the car for several years, make sure
to give the car a thorough test before
pulling the trigger.
Drive along different roads at different
speeds -- city streets, highways, residen-
tial roads, etc. Basically, you should try
to replicate your daily driving to get as
accurate idea of how the car is going to
perform under your normal driving con-
ditions.
Too often, drivers rush through the test
drive, due to schedule crunches, not
wanting to be around the salesman or just
plain apathy about cars in general. Trust
us -- take a good, long time when you're
on the road. It will pay off in the long run.
2. Park it
In addition to driving, it's important to
try parking the car you're testing out.
Is it easy or difficult to parallel park?
Are there big blind spots that interfere
with backing out of a space? Is it maneu-
verable enough to meet your daily park-
ing needs? Can you get in and out with
ease? These are aspects of car ownership
that a lot of people don't think about,
which can turn into issues after it's al-
ready too late.
3. Play with the tech and other features
Familiarize yourself with the infotain-
ment system. Is it easy to use or clunky
and distracting? Play with the radio and
see how the speakers sound. Take a
minute and connect your phone to make
sure the Bluetooth connection works, if
it's available.
Additionally, it's important to ask about
and test out other features that you think
are going to be important to your owner-
ship experience. Find out how the lug-
gage rack works and see how easy the
seats fold down, for instance.
So much goes into driving a car in ad-
dition to working the gas, brakes and
steering that you should absolutely de-
vote some time to testing these things
out.
4. Test the handling as the driver and
the passenger
Get a feel for how the car drives from
the perspective of the driver and the pas-
senger. A vehicle's handling can be a very
important aspect of your ownership ex-
perience. Although you may love the
way a certain car looks, the way it drives
can make or break how much you actu-
ally enjoy having the car.
Make sure the car has the suspension
you want (too tight, too soft or just right),
has good braking performance, steers the
way you want and has the right amount
of power for you.
If you're going to have passengers reg-
ularly, ride in the front and back seats to
ensure that others are in for a comfortable
experience.
5. Listen for anything and everything
At some point during your test drive,
turn the radio off and, since many car
salesman will talk throughout the drive,
ask them to kindly zip it for a few min-
utes so you can listen for any issues with
the car.
Wind noise is a major complaint for
many drivers, so make sure that the cabin
is well insulated from it. Additionally, lis-
ten hard for any clunks or rattles. Any-
thing that sounds out of place should be
investigated, as it could point to safety
issue or expensive repair down the line.
Odd sounds should be looked at by an in-
dependent mechanic before purchasing a
new vehicle.
6. Don't fall into a false sense of security
Remember, just because you are test-
ing a new car does not mean that it is free
from defects or other problems. You
should be just as meticulous as you
would testing a used car.
Look for issues with the paint and in-
terior materials, as, even though the car
may have been perfect when it rolled off
the assembly line, nicks and scratches
can occur when the car is transported to
the dealer.
7. Bring a friend
Finally, and perhaps most importantly,
two sets of eyes and ears are always bet-
ter than one. Bringing a friend or family
member who can help you notice things
that you may not catch yourself. Make
sure that this person can also keep you
from getting overly excited about a car
and making a rash purchase.

he cards have aligned for homeowners
with mortgage insurance to remove that
temporary expense. By many economists
accounts that time has come sooner than ex-
pected. With hundreds of dollars in potential
savings every month, this will be a favorably
welcomed by many homeowners.
More commonly referred to as PMI (private
mortgage insurance), mortgage insurance (MI)
is a premium that many homeowners pay to pro-
tect their current lender. This premium is re-
quired on conventional loans whose balances
exceed 80% of the propertys value. It is also a
required component of most FHA loans, regard-
less of the initial loan-to-value ratio.
Although every homeowner would prefer to
avoid having this additional expense as part of
their mortgage payment, some will accept it
temporarily. Homebuyers with a smaller down
payment look at it as necessary to offset putting
less than 20% down on their purchase. Even
current homeowners who lost equity due to re-
cent declines in property values made the deci-
sion to accept mortgage insurance as a short-
term way of locking in a long-term record-low
interest rate. Both of these homeowners may
benefit from revisiting their situation based on
the current market.
Homeowners with a conventional loan have
the most options. Mortgage insurance on a con-
ventional loan can usually be eliminated with no
minimum time requirement. Theres only an eq-
uity requirement. So long as the house now has
20% equity that can be verified, the homeowner
can request to have the mortgage insurance
eliminated. They would simply need to call their
current lender and order an appraisal (usually at
the homeowners expense) to verify the current
equity position.
These homeowners would also be wise to
shop around to compare their existing mortgage
rate to whats available in the market today. With
todays rates within a sliver of the all-time
record low, current homeowners may be able to
eliminate their mortgage insurance and lower
their rate at the same time. This creates a double
win. And if the
lender can pay or re-
imburse them for
the appraisal, its a
triple win.

with FHA financing
have fewer options.
FHA loans have re-
strictions in place
that make eliminat-
ing mortgage insurance much more difficult.
The loan-to-value restriction is set at 78% of
a propertys value instead of the traditional
80%. More importantly, the value is based on
the appraisal at the time the loan was obtained.
In other words, the FHA will not consider ap-
preciation in recalculating the current loan-to-
value position. An appraisal alone will not be
sufficient. Homeowners with FHA financing
currently will need to complete a refinance in
order to remove their mortgage insurance.
With interest rates near record lows and prop-
erty values at recent highs, this might be the
perfect time.
Homeowners who arent sure of their current
value or equity position should call a mortgage
advisor. A true mortgage professional will be
able to look up recent sales in the area to esti-
mate current values, as well as compare current
interest rates with what a homeowner presently
has. A trusted advisor will help determine if a
refinance is in ones best interest, or if a simple
appraisal is all thats needed to remove the mort-
gage insurance.
