The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: Congratulations to Aubri Ashbacher for graduating from High School. She was
very helpful this year in our Sunday PSR classes and she received the sacrament of confirmation last April. We certainly would miss her presence especially if she will go to a university farther from us. As we recognize her achievements, let us also pray for her that she will continue to remain faithful to her faith in God and continue to practice it in her life as she live a more independent life and more free to make choices on her own. May God keep her safe and bless her always! Congratulations also to her parents! Obviously, their support and sacrifices helped their child succeed! This Sunday we also celebrate Pentecost Sunday the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This event ushered in the official birth of the Church as Christ established it on Saint Peter, the rock. (Matthew 16:18) Before the apostles received the Holy Spirit they were scared and hardly understood what our Lord have taught them and what had happened to Him. When they gather together they kept the doors locked and the windows closed. But when they received the Holy Spirit everything changed. They became courageous and remembered and understood everything that our Lord taught them. They opened the windows and doors and proclaimed the Gospel of Christ. Since then the body of Christ continued to grow and the church lives on forever, as Christ have promised. Many powers that persecuted the church, like the Roman Empire, have come and gone, yet the Church continues to live. This is the proof that Jesuss words in Matthew 16:18 will always be true: and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. If we look at the history of the church you will really see the hand of the Holy Spirit actively doing His work, of course through the ups and downs of the Church. Like last Tuesday, we celebrate the feast of Saint Matthias. He was selected by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot. Before they draw the lots, they prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Then last Wednesday we celebrated the memorial of Saint Isidore the farmer, from Madrid, Spain. He was a tenant and a poor farmer, but never failed to go to mass every day early in the morning before going to his field. He was very kind and helpful to poor people and even to

animals! He died in 1130 a holy man and was canonized in 1611. He is the patron of farmers and rural communities. We should invoke, especially our farmers the intercession of Saint Isidore for a bountiful harvest! Last Monday we celebrated the memorial of the first day of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Fatima, to the three children. These are just a few of the myriads of examples that showed to us how God is active in our lives through the Holy Spirit. In our liturgical celebrations, Pentecost ends the Easter Season and once more we are back to the Ordinary Time of the year. But the Holy Spirit continues His work of sanctification and inspiration to all of us. Like the apostles at Pentecost, may we dispose our minds and hearts to His presence that we may be transformed into the will of God in our lives and the world. For all our Weekday church goers: Sorry we have no mass this Tuesday at 5:30PM, May 21st. I have to be at our Jesus Caritas meeting of priests at the Spiritual Life Center in the afternoon. The rest of the week our schedule will be the same. Thank you for your understanding. God bless all of you! Fr. Roger

Golden Anniversary The Golden Anniversary of St. Joseph Catholic Church will be approaching near the end of next year. We are looking for pictures of activities of the early years. If you have any you can share, we would appreciate it very much. Give the photos to Father, Karen Pryer, Debra Amershek, or Pat Westhoff. Let us know if we need to copy them or if you want them back. If you have group pictures, could you attach a list of names. Thanks!

Over the heads of each were seen tongues, which had the appearance of fire. Those witnesses said that all of the fire spread from one central flame. We commonly think of fire as the most powerful earthly symbol of Gods presence. The tongues were symbols of speech, of preaching, of the power of spreading the Gospel. Interior wonders were also underway, as those present were filled with the Holy Spirit. At this precise moment, the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, was created! It had its head, Christ; for its body, the Apostles and other faithful followers of Our Lord; and now, it acquired a soul, the Holy Spirit, to give it divine life. As the Jewish worshipers passed the chapels Upper Room, they heard the loud sound of the Christians voices and stopped to listen. Soon, the disciples went out and mingled with the crowd. The spectators, mostly Galileans, were amazed to find them using strange dialects that were spoken in their distant countries. Peter, the first Pope, then delivered a masterful address, which clearly revealed the Good News of redemption through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. So inspired were many that they asked, What are we to do, brothers? And Peter answered, You must repent and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus, that your sins may be forgiven; then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38) On that day, about 3000 were converted and baptized, a good beginning for the Church. These words of St. Peter are as true today as they were then. If we believe in Christ and are baptized, God gives to us the gift of the Holy Spirit. He comes to live and work in us, to raise our minds and hearts, so that we show others that we are truly the children of God. Theres nothing surprising about the marvelous strength of our Church after 2000 years or more. The Holy Spirit still gives her energy to spread the Word. In a certain sense, the first Pentecost never ended, because the Holy Spirit came to stay. Its Graduation Time Once Again This time of the year, graduations are taking place in most towns. Its a happy time for students, parents and teachers. Many of the seniors feel a real sense of accomplishment because theyve used their talents and worked hard both in class and in their extracurricular activities. Both Northeast and Girard will hold their commencement exercises TODAY at 3:00p.m. in the school gymnasiums. One aspect of graduation that I think is very important is the friendships that youve formed during your time in high school. Graduation can be a bittersweet event because it brings an end to seeing and associating with some close friends. In some cases, these friendships will continue for a lifetime. Entering college can become an opportunity to make new friends, to be free from the peer pressure groups of high school. Whats important now is to have the good sense to be extra careful in selecting future friends. Life is difficult without a few goo, faithful and devoted friends. These types of friends dont tie us down--theyre around or available when we need them, but never a burden. Finding a true friend isnt easy. Youll be lucky to have 2 or 3 in your lifetime that fit that description--who build you up to others and listen to what you tell them in confidence. Be guided by the advice of Thomas a Kempis: Without a friend, you cannot live well; and if Jesus is not your friend, above all other friends, you will be sad and lonely in this life. I recall one Colgan graduation a few years back when Fr. Robert Wachter, now in Fort Scott, was the speaker. He told the seniors, Put God first, your parents and friends second, and yourself last. If you live by this plan, youll be happier than most other people.

Congratulations!!! Congratulations to our 2013 GHS Graduate, Aubri Ashbacher, daughter of Mike & Janet Ashbacher!
Pentecost: The Gift of the Holy Spirit The Feast of Pentecost, which falls 10 days after the Ascension, recalls two great events: The descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and the birthday of the Catholic Church. This year Pentecost is observed on May 19. The word Pentecost means 50, or 50 days after the Resurrection. On the morning of the first Christian Pentecost, the Jews were on their way to the temple when a mighty sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming was heard from the building which housed the Upper Room, where Jesus had celebrated His first Mass. Church scholars believe that the Blessed Virgin and other holy women, together with about 120 others mentioned in Acts I, were present with the Apostles as the sound filled the whole house.
