SENSIBLE DESIGN STYLISH LIVING

Dear Reader, We are pleased to present you with the second, revised edition of our magazine, Art. Work. On over 100 pages, you will find interesting and inspiring ideas worth knowing along with many new things from people for people, who treasure wood and love beautiful products. Bauwerk stands for three clear promises: Swiss tradition, two-layer quality, and healthful living. The results are our distinctive products for customers, who value the incomparable style, authenticity, and warmth, which only a floor made of real wood can radiantly express. In this issue of Art. Work, we would like to introduce you to two fascinating new parquet lines. First is the trendyfresh-refreshing Vintage Edition, which the Zurich designer Virginia Maissen from Studio Gustave created exclusively for Bauwerk. This edition dazzles you with a reminder of a joie de vivre and charming patina from past times. Let its 2047 possible combinations inspire you! Then we have the exclusive, hand-selected Silverline Edition, which exudes understated luxurious elegance with its generous dimensions and flawless workmanship. And we naturally have captured five lifestyles for you, each of which is fascinating in its own way. What links all them is the unique diversity of wood, which lends style and a natural, healthy way of living to every space. Besides inspiring stories about lifestyles, people and moments, we would also like to tell you more about the material we work with, wood, and about the company, where this is done, Bauwerk. For instance, did you know that we are the only parquet manufacturer, which guarantees tested and certified healthy living and the Sentinel-Haus Standard? Do you know that we have opened a new Parquet World center at our headquarters in St. Margrethen? Therewith, for the first time, we have opened our doors to end customers and architects in our head-quarters. In this spirit welcome to the world of Bauwerk!

The history of the tradition-rich Swiss company Bauwerk begins in the 1930s. Over the years, many things have changed. Today, we do not just manufacture parquet. Far more, we offer inspiration and flooring to create and arrange living space for every lifestyle.

Swiss tradition ART_WORK 7

For more than 70 years, the tradition-rich Swiss company Bauwerk has manufactured parquet to the highest standards with a typical Swiss awareness for quality.

SWISS TRADITION
Swiss Parquet Pioneers

ver 70 years ago, Ernst Ghner laid the foundation for our tradition-rich Swiss company. We have continued to instill his pioneering spirit into numerous innovations up to the present. We uphold this spirit of innovation not only in the development of new products but also by bringing forward this topic at Switzerlands universities.

In addition, we nurture our Swiss roots every day by renewing our commitment to competence, quality and reliability.
Every day, we nurture our Swiss roots by renewing our commitment to competence, quality and reliability.

Manufacturing in Switzerland We will continue to strengthen our Swiss manufacturing sites in the future as well. We already produce 80% of our products in St. Margrethen today, and we are making further investments at our head office. A team of around 300 committed and reliable employees work for our customers to the highest quality and professional standards at our site in Switzerland. Over 600 craftsmen and women work for you worldwide. With the opening of the new Parquet Center with Parquet World and the Training Center at our head office in St. Margrethen, we consciously underscore our Swiss roots: We stand by our Swiss traditions.

Milestones of a Tradition-Rich Swiss Enterprise

1936 Ernst Ghner lays the cornerstone for todays Bauwerk Parkett AG. In the same year, Bauwerk produces the first mosaic parquet floor. 1946 Launch of production in St. Margrethen and the opening of the first export office in London. 1957 Development of first dispersion adhesive, which replaces the common tar emulsion generally in use at the time. An initial step towards healthy living. Today all adhesives used by Bauwerk are solvent-free. 1976 World premier: introduction of the first two-layer prefabricated parquet. 2010 Bronze Award on the 13th Designers Saturday in Langenthal. 2011 New Parquet World: Bauwerk opens the new Parquet Center at its headquarter in St. Margrethen.

2-layer-qualityART_WORK 9

High-quality, full-adhesive, 2-layer Bauwerk parquet fulfills the highest standards and offers decisive advantages for living quality.

2-LAYERQUALITY
Parquet for the highest standards
Our quality standards are high, and Bauwerk quality does not come from Asia. We set the bar high from the beginning with the selection of raw materials: We only use wood from controlled sources. The optimum usage of available raw materials along with the application of solvent-free adhesives and lacquers are self-understood in our production process. State-of-the-art machines, experienced employees By consistently linking tradition with technology and people with machines, we ensure the greatest possible processing precision. Our comprehensive quality controls guarantee that we maintain our high quality standards. These include hand and visual checks by experienced employees. This gives you the assurance that you can look forward to years of enjoyment on an exclusive, problem-free and genuine wood floor. Professional installers as partners The professional installation of our parquet is just as important as our conscientious production process. We believe that high-quality parquet should be glued and focus on 2-layered parquet, and in working closely with installing trade. Our professional Bauwerk installing partners reliably and competently ensure that the parquet requests of our customers are perfectly fulfilled down to the last detail.

The advantages of glued, 2-layer parquet

1. Impact noise (no hollow sounds) Full-adhesive wood cannot vibrate and therefore reduces resonation noise levels by 50% when compared to floating parquet. 2. Thickness 2-layer parquet with full adhesion can be used in combination with different floor coverings of the same thickness without stumbling blocks, such as molding or raised edges. When butting against pillars, staircases, or door frames, for example, the floor installer does not need to use expansion gaps near fixed building elements. 3. Heat transmission Thanks to the compactness of glued 2-layer parquet from Bauwerk, it has an ideal heat transmission resistance factor of 0.0380.09 m2k/W and thus reduces the cost of energy, compared with other construction. It is ideal for buildings conforming to the MINERGIE standard.

We focus on 2-layered parquet and working closely with installing trade.

Virginia Maissen Interview

There is nothing right or wrong its more about having a sense for good combinations and arrangements.
tage or design, classic or avant-garde: You need to have the courage to become engaged. You allow the furnishings to be arranged and then change them in this way, an individual living style emerges. There is nothing right or wrong its much more about having a sense for good combinations and arrangements.
How did your collaboration with Bauwerk come about? Some of my friends were architects, What is the significance of parquet flooring for you in the creation of living space? Parquet brings a bit of nature into the home. I have to conscientiously approach the selection of the wood, its structure, texture, and quality, its cut and the way it is laid while always keeping in mind that wood is a living product, becomes more beautiful as it ages, and that it is practically imperishable. This is what makes the material so extraordinary: Parquet is like a flatmate. What do you need to consider when designing its setting? Whether eclectic or minimalistic, vinWhere did you take your inspiration when designing the Vintage Edition? In general terms, my passion for living and used things. We Swiss like to have our houses perfect, concise, just so, but when we are in other countries, we enjoy the beauty of something with patina and find magic in jumbled faades, and well-worn floors. So we found inWhat makes the Vintage Edition from Bauwerk unique? who had heard of Bauwerk, and I knew the company from my own research for Studio Gustave. We then received an inquiry from the Bauwerk product management about the creation of the Vintage Edition, which we would be able to implement with a great deal of creative freedom. spiration for the Vintage Edition in something very commonplace, such as the typography of a newspaper, a beautiful old Persian rug, or the scuffed and battered cabinets in an artists atelier. What does vintage actually mean? Nearly everything between antique and new that ages beautifully and nobly in the eyes of the beholder is

dala are more likely to require inspiration, a concept, a bit of imagination or just plain enthusiasm for something really special. Therefore, it is more likely that they will be installed in public spaces, such as boutiques, cafs, bars, or showrooms. What did you find particularly fascinating during the Vintage Edition project? Most of all, I found it challenging to immerse myself in material, which we do not deal with everyday, and combine a creative vision with what is feasible in the best way possible. The fascinating encounters and discussions with the craftsmen and managers at Bauwerk made this project a valuable experience for us.

Parquet is like a flatmate.

What are the concrete design possibilities offered by the Vintage Edition? The Trendpark Indigo or Stone and the Unopark White are winning alternatives to the previous traditional parquet collection, and they match the zeitgeist perfectly. The more special Unopark editions Colours, Old News, and Man-

stamped with the name vintage these days. So everything at a rummage sale including junk, bric-a-brac, and handme-downs is considered virtuous vintage. Anyone, who is familiar with the book A Trip to Tripiti from his childhood, understands how painful it is to throw away something that is still useful. While I was still in school, I removed old sinks from abandoned hotels, collected old tiles, and rescued old Versailles-style parquet from my parents home.

Silverline Edition
True luxury is having the space and the time to enjoy it. In an increasingly hectic everyday life in the midst of a pulsing urbanity, a growing number of people create free space.

The luxury of the future is found in the conscious creation of living space using unique precious materials. At first glance, a significant value is not apparent but rather celebrated in its

simplicity and reserve. Self-assured understatement demonstrates style and individuality. A reduction to what is essential reveals the measure of all things.

36ART_WORKSilverline Edition

Design is an important form of communication. People use design to speak to each other and to express their way of living and thinking.

Extraordinary Quality in Design and Workmanship

Hand-selected exclusivity The exclusive boards in the Silverline Edition are carefully hand-selected from especially refined and straight oak. Straight, fine lines result lengthwise from the careful sawing of the boards. Flawless boards of this length are extremely rare, because oak trees grow very slowly and need decades for this format. The characterful sorting process emphasizes the uniqueness of this material wood and thus each Silverline floor has its own unique story to tell. Generous Formats At almost three meters, the impressive length of the Silverline boards is emphasized through special beveling, which runs along the entire length of the board. This underscores the exceptionally generous dimensions of a Silverline floor, amplifies the natural effect of the spatial architecture, and guides the light in the room. Exclusive Refinement The colours and the surface finishing of the Silverline Edition are just as exceptional as the length of the individual boards. All of the boards have been deep brushed and are protected with natural oils. Over the course of time, a very special patina emerges interesting reflections develop along with a depth that increases with age. Swiss Made Refined, large-format flooring is unforgiving when there are flaws. Just drying the wood demands a great deal of experience and patience drying oak too quickly causes undesired fine cracks, which are found during the sorting process. Therefore, each individual board in the Silverline Edition is processed exclusively by our master team in Switzerland. They guarantee the outstanding quality of the Silverline Edition by working with great care.

A Class of its Own

The Silverline Signum

Every Silverline floor is very carefully manufactured in Switzerland. The exclusive quality is guaranteed with a solid silver monogram, which is set in the floor or given to the customer personally.

A matter of form. Whether Mies van der Rohes cantilever chair, Arne Jacobsens chairs or Bauhaus switches: As with any good design, the effect of a parquet floor is created by the overall picture. Although the parquet creates its own effect on the floor, it still enters into dialogue with the entire room.

lassic is trendy. People dress up, choose classy materials and set great store by ambience. This is not just a bout of nostalgia; it is a style, both opulent and purist, that utilizes high-class wood and exciting furniture to create an ambience which exudes mellow shades and sensual delights. Simple and classy it works; provided that enough attention is given to materials and processing. Parquet flooring by Bauwerk guarantees both. Made from specially selected wood and processed by master craftsmen, our parquet flooring lasts a lifetime. Like in the case of other classics, its quality has proven

itself over decades. Our focus is on products that satisfy not only functional requirements but also emotional needs.

So what is actually involved in the laying of such a beautiful wooden floor? Well, on the one hand, somebody who has been dealing with all aspects of parquet manufacture for generations and, on the other hand, a parquet recliner who is an expert in this centuries-old craft. Just a dream? Definitely not. Parquet places a wealth of nature directly under our feet. It suggests a country home feeling with a contemporary touch, perfectly in tune with the times and nevertheless timeless.

The oldest tree in the world

The oldest tree in the world, to be found in Scandinavia, is believed to be an almost 10,000 year-old common spruce which regenerates itself through self-cloning. Until recently, a bristlecone pine in the White Mountains of California, which is 4,700 years old, was considered to be the oldest tree in the world. The oldest network of roots from which trees are still growing is to be found in Tasmania and is believed to be 50,000 years old. The worlds oldest living thing is a 2-meter high giant fungus in the Antarctica. It is estimated to be 10,000 years old.

The natural appearance of real wood is a work of art in itself, touching it rewards you with pleasurable warmth. This is the psychological side of creating a living space: hardwood is balm for the soul. If you choose the right wood, the perceived room temperature can be raised by up to 2 degrees Celsius. Definitely not pale. A lot of white, shades of cream in coffee hues, natural stone, almost invisible high-tech fixtures accompanied by a parquet floor, made from real wood. What may sound like a clash between the modern and the traditional is actually a harmonic interior design concept in tune with the times.

Purism Parquet Flooring The informed choice

Authentic materials, such as indigenous wood, natural stone or raw steel are becoming increasingly popular. The crucial factor is quality. Wood is being used intentionally to clearly contrast straight lines and shapes and the frugality of modern architecture. This contrast between the traditional and the modern exudes its very own character and charm.
Purism, from the Latin purus (pure, undiluted) is a 20th century artistic and architectural genre. It was founded in 1918 by Amde Ozenfant and Charles-douard Jeanneret-Gris (Le Corbusier) when they published their Aprs le cubisme (beyond cubism) manifesto. The Purists focused on a simple, functional style of painting and building that combined aesthetics with the world of mechanics. Simple geometric shapes were used with mechanical precision on a rational basis. The golden section was deemed to be the perfect proportion. Purely decorative elements were rejected.

here is a trend in interior design towards natural, purist as well as high-quality materials. By selective use of wood, a warm ambience may be created that does not reduce the structure and tranquillity of a purist environment to the level of an exclusive objet dart, ensuring your complete well-being at home within your own four walls. In the past, avant-garde designers favoured wood as flooring or for furniture. In the 1980s, wood was considered the embodiment of all things traditional and pastoral. The rustic oak wall unit springs to mind. These days, our Bauwerk oak, walnut, etc. parquets, providing a lively accent in purist interior design, is experiencing a renaissance. Cold glass and smooth metal have become less popular.

Yearning for other cultures

Familiar foreign lands

LIVING IN an Arabian fairy tale. From time immemorial, our wandering spirit and curiosity has been compelling us to visit foreign lands and cultures. On our journeys through Asia, Africa or India, we encounter interior design styles that represent a combination of indigenous materials and local handicraft with European influences. A cosmopolitan living style has become firmly established in our homes.

Rarest tree
scents, blazing lanterns and exquisite colour schemes.
The rarest tree on earth is the Hyophorbe palm tree of the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. There are only five varieties all of which are endangered, especially the Mauritius palm tree of which there is only one specimen left in the Curepipe botanic garden of Mauritius. Any attempts to grow new trees of this species have so far been unsuccessful and extinction looks unavoidable.

outhern European villages and Mediterranean gardens inspire us with their unique splendour. Vibrant blue and green shades contrast with seductive warm colours, such as red or purple. Mocha, terracotta and gold desert colours complement the austere spectrum of selected unique specimens from the African bush. Baroque carvings, delicate ornaments and woven baskets are all characteristics of foreign architecture and craftsmanship. Opulent mate rials, mosaic-like tiles and tea glasses with golden decorations are inextricably linked with 1001 Arabian Nights. Oriental living environments bewitch all our senses with sweet

Globetrotter
Lying on the sofa, we dream of the soft purring of a ceiling fan and hushed conversation in one of the East India Companys English clubs, or an evening on the terrace of a small hotel in Martinique, an ice-cold Planters Punch in hand. In the right measure and combination, a far-eastern exotic touch, as a reminder of our travels, not only suits a globetrotters home down to a T, it also makes it easier to integrate newly-acquired souvenirs from long-distance trips.

South-East Asian Kyara

Enthusiasts pay up to CHF 80,000 (approx. EUR 65,000) per kilogram of Kyara, or eagle wood, as it is also known. In the form of incense sticks, the wood gives off a bewitching scent. However, the scent is only released if a certain vermin has darkened the light heartwood and changed the resin. The fresh heartwood, the so-called eagle wood, is one of the most sought-after commodities in the world.

Sensual pleasure

Elegant living

Elegant, individual, distinct and creative. Sumptuous bargains from the flea market, a resplendent chandelier, a pastel-coloured dresser showing signs of age, an old sofa with deep comfortable cushions. The combination of unusual single pieces with a patina, the charm and beauty of the unfinished living proof of the quality renaissance in all aspects of home furnishing. A sensual pleasure.

he ambience created is far from airy and light. Simple minimalist furniture looks as out of place as white woodchip wallpaper. For an opulent style, patterned wallpaper should be used featuring, for example, abstract flower patterns. The furniture should be preferably baroque and therefore graceful and curvy. Decorated in a flamboyant fashion if possible a touch of decadence works wonders for opulence. The colours should be warm and muted: Vibrant red, dark shades gold is indispensable. Gilt framed mirrors are made for this ambience. Employ classy materials, such as vel-

vet. There should be cushions and quilts casually left here and there on a sedate sofa, creating an atmosphere of cosiness.

Most expensive item of furniture

The most expensive piece of furniture is the so-called Badminton Cabinet, a baroque wardrobe from the 18th century. The wardrobe, which was constructed using ebony and gilded bronze, is close to 4 m high and 2.3 m wide. There are lapis lazuli, red and green Sicilian jasper, amethyst and quartz to be found in the pictures of birds and flowers featured in the inlay work. In 2004, the wardrobe was sold at auction at Christies in London for the sum of Euro 24.6 million. It is now on exhibition in the Liechtenstein art museum. And whats more: the Liechtenstein art museum in Vaduz is also exhibiting a wooden floor by Bauwerk. (Architect: Morger & Degelo, Basel)

Ecological living
Ecological, healthy and energy-efficient: life in harmony with nature. Bauwerk parquet makes wooden floors perfectly suited to buildings constructed according to MINERGIE standards. The MINERGIE standard is a voluntary construction standard facilitating rational use of energy and wide use of renewable energy combined with improved quality of life, ensured competitiveness and lower environmental impact. As regards energy efficiency, parquet holds a significant advantage over other products and materials since parquet manufacturing requires little so-called grey energy (accumulated energy needed from a products production to its disposal). The entire Bauwerk range is suitable for floor heating. Aside from adhesive parquet, full-area bonded 2-layer parquet is particularly suitable to fulfil the strict MINERGIE standards. Depending on the product in question, Bauwerk products such as the new country house floorboard Villapark or the Cleverpark have proved heat conductivity resistance factor compared to 3-layer products. MINERGIE

Why is parquet flooring in such great demand? There are many reasons. We suggest the following five:
Cost-efficient & durable Parquet flooring has a long life. It still looks beautiful after many years and can be re-sanded several times if necessary. Attractive & timelessly handsome Wood simply has a timeless beauty. It is not surprising that parquet has become a real classic, not only as highquality flooring but also in the bathroom. Individual & unique Parquet gives your room that certain indefinable something. It can create a feeling of warmth and cosiness in a room. Each floor board, each piece is unique. There are no copies, only originals. Natural & ecological Wood has been used as a natural material from times immemorial. The sustainability principle applied in controlled forestry systems ensures that only as much wood is cut as can be re-grown, respectively reforested. Hygienic & low maintenance Thanks to its surface, parquet is particularly easy to clean. Hardly any other flooring is as easy to maintain.

5 reasons IN FAVOUR OF PARQUET

WELL-BEING GUARANTEED
Bauwerk-Parkett is the only parquet manufacturer who is a partner in the Sentinel-Haus concept, allowing the company to guarantee a tested and certified healthy living environment. Bauwerk parquet is free of critical or pollutive substances. As a natural wood product, it is guaranteed CO2 neutral. Bauwerk Parkett buys wood from controlled origins and exclusively uses ecologically compatible components to manufacture its parquet flooring. A large portion of the Bauwerk parquets is FSC certified. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is the only internationally valid and credible wood label. ISO 14001 certification stands for top safety standards and exemplary conduct in terms of environmental protection. As a MINERGIE member, Bauwerk is a reliable partner for energyefficient building projects.

ART FROM NATURE

The young design duo of Duo Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer, from the Raw Edges Design Studio, created this impressive floor installation in the gallery of Established & Sons, London. They called their work of art, made up of oiled oak parquet in a herringbone patter, Wall to Wall. The dying of the individual pieces of wood required 15 different colours. Through the targeted disassociation of an everyday object parquet Alkalay and Mer have created a living, characteristically mosaic design. www.raw-edges.com

Wood in the bathroom ART_WORK 95

A new sense of well-being

Whether the floor or the walls, the furniture or the sink, with wood you can transform uninviting sanitary facilities into a comfortable and relaxing room. Many builders and renovators are realizing the potential of wood as raw material the possibilities for individual design are end less. Wood is unique no two wood types are the same, not even two floorboards are the same. And another bonus is: wood reflects daylight as well as artificial light, giving small bathrooms a larger impression. Different shades and grains, densities and forms ensure its visual appeal. And whats more, top-class wood makes the ideal complement to high-quality materials such as steel, granite and marble.

98ART_WORKSwiss Parquet Pioneers

Swiss Parquet Pioneers ART_WORK 99

he history of our venerable family business goes back to the 1920s. Zurich around 150 years ago a city on the move. This is the exciting era into which Ernst Ghner was born. Gottlieb Ghner founded a glaziers and joiners workshop in the district of Seefeld, which was eventually taken over by his son Ernst Ghner. The city is growing rapidly. New and innovative ideas fall on fertile soil. The hard-working Ghner family produces good work and its products and services are in steady demand. With rope-powered machines, a production hall and a horse-drawn wagon, the business expands and a door and window factory is established in Altsttten. However, that was not enough. Ernst Ghner is driven by his curiosity

about things new and his interest in experimenting and developing products. Having learned everything there was to know about wood, he had the brilliant idea of constructing automobile bodywork from wood, gracefully curved and highly elastic. His wooden bodywork, which he built for DKW (later Audi), made automotive history. Ghner is a foresighted entrepreneur with abundant ideas whose activities centered on wood. In the meantime, he had established several further sites all over Zurich. In one of his factories, Ghner produced the new mosaic parquet flooring. His visionary developments revolutionized wall paneling or flooring composed of wood pieces. This was the moment Ernst Ghner laid the foundation for the present Bauwerk brand. The unprecedented story of both an entrepreneur and his enterprise had begun. His nephew Paul Ghner

increasingly devoting himself to the development of technology and expertise in the field of wooden floor manufacture.

Our ongoing research and development is an essential part of our philosophy at Bauwerk.
His nephew Paul Ghner devoted himself intensively to the development of technology and expertise in the field of wooden floor manufacture. With global demand for technology and expertise in the field of wood floor manufacturing on the rise, the business continued to expand. At the beginning of the 1950s, the company established its wood technology research unit. For the Ghner family, business success was not an end in

itself; it was a way of ensuring consistent product quality while keeping pace with latest developments. This helps explain how the company managed to continuously raise its levels of quality and service while establishing its own floor-laying company and investing in a traditional handicraft at the same time. Today, research and development is an essential component of the philosophy for Bauwerk and its employees. In this way Paul Ghners zest for change and improvement lives on in our daily work.

Because of our very small parquet thickness of about 813mm and our fullsurface, compact adhesion, the heat conductivity values for radiant floor heating is ideal, which means the optimum use of expensive energy. The thicker parquet boards are (and three-layer laminates often require a felt pad), the lower the critical radiant heat level.

FACT 2 CROSS-SECTION:

Furthermore, beautiful, interior architecture details are possible thanks to our very small parquet thickness and full-surface adhesion, which helps reduce the expansion and contraction of the wood. For example, in front of an open fireplace, where a rectangular stone or metal area has to be installed to prevent fires. With our parquet, you can work without expansion gaps, and this also applies to pillars, posts, doorframes, and transitions to other flooring, such as kitchen tiles. In most cases, you do not have to use unattractive transition molding, which helps maintain a perfect overall impression.
