Dear Parents, Research shows that spelling achievement is improved by having students study words at an appropriately difficult level.

Students working at an instructional level learn and retain the bulk of what they are taught and are able to apply this knowledge to other words with the same spelling pattern. Conversely, students working at a frustration level might memorize the words for a short period of time but will quickly forget to use them in their writing. In order to determine which list your child will work with, s/he has completed an in-class assessment. We will re-test after winter break to determine if your child will remain on this level or move to the other level. Please Note: There will NOT be a formal spelling test, nor will your child be expected to study at home. However, should your child wish to work with his or her words at home, please visit: http://www.spellingcity.com. Type

into the search box to bring up the word lists.

Each week, students will do word work in class. This will consist of alphabetizing the words and writing definitions and sentences for some of the words. Some weeks, students will have the opportunity to use the Spellingcity.com website to practice their words. Other weeks, they will play Spelling Battleship with a partner or choose from a predetermined selection of in-class activities to practice that weeks spelling pattern. Our goal is for the students to apply these words to their everyday writing, rather than simply memorizing a list of words!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Andersen
