Fair Directors Welcome

In the twelve brief months since the inaugural Design Days Dubai, we have travelled the world, meeting design spaces on six continents, and a common thread has emerged the growing interest in the Middle East, and excitement about Dubai as one of the few global cities hosting both a contemporary art and design fair. We are honoured that Design Days Dubais growth and success have been made possible under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin RashidAl Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. This year, new design initiatives were launched by our partners: Design Road Professional by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority has enabled four Emirati designers to meet their peers abroad and present new creations at the fair. A regional talent competition launched by Van Cleef & Arpels, in association with Tashkeel will award the winner with a flight to Paris for a week. Emaar, with Downtown Dubai, as our host, and Audi Middle East, associated to design, also share our passion for excellence; we thank them for their continued collaboration. For 2013, we will unveil an exciting number of firsts, including large-scale installations created especially for the fair, premieres of visually compelling new design objects, and exhibitors coming to the Middle East for the first time. Our public programming echoes a theme of discovery and insight, with workshops, panels, discussions and firsthand access to some of the design worlds most innovative taste-makers designers, gallery owners and collectors. Design Days Dubai 2013 welcomes some of the most recognized names in design as well as fresh talent 29 galleries in total with pieces from as far afield as Taiwan, South Africa, Mexico and Australia. Four leading design brands are creating the Bespoke Design section. There has never been more opportunities to appreciate and purchase rare, exclusive modern and contemporary works. Our 2013 event includes a 100% increase in the number of galleries from the region, with participants from Dubai, Kuwait and Beirut.Three key UAE institutions Tashkeel, FN Designs, and the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) all enhance the international profile of design and culture from the Arab world. We welcome you all to Design Days Dubai for the worlds most exciting, collectable design pieces that can be found under one roof.

Audi
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Everything starts with an idea or a concept in mind be it designing a car or creating a piece of art. The Design Days Dubai started with the great idea to create a platform for design objects in the Middle East and South Asia. As global design patron and a responsible employer, we as Audi support art and design in the communities we operate in and therefore take pride in supporting the Design Days Dubai. After last years success, it is a great pleasure for Audi to once again be part of the team to promote emerging local talents and add to the regions cultural scene. Design enthusiasts can once more expect fine pieces of art of course, but more importantly creativity, new ideas and materials, progressive thinking and an experience that challenges your view of the world exactly what we like at Audi. At Audi conventional ways of seeing and thinking are continually challenged. This way we create cars with contemporary design and technology and play an active role in shaping the mobility of the future, not unlike an artist who has the opportunity to change impressions of the present and the thinking of the future. We are positive that the second edition of Design Days Dubai will further strengthen its position as a focal point for the global design and art community and creates a lasting legacy for the design movement in the Middle East and South Asia. Sincerely,
- - . . . . . - . - .

Art Factum Gallery is a fresh space devoted to presenting all forms of contemporary art. Founded in 2011, it is located in the Quarantine District, an industrial sector in the outskirts of Beirut, and exists as the renovated product of an old steel factory. As an establishment that focuses on bringing in international artists to the artistic and cultural scene of Beirut, Art Factum Gallery manages to emphasize that philosophy by attending to several international art fairs and events, not to mention retaining a tight bond with several international galleries and institutions. That, along with collaborating with local cultural organizations and personnel, ensures the subsequent spreading of the artistic message onto the masses - one of the gallerys main motives. As for its portfolio, Art Factum Gallery represents and supports several international, as well as local artists in the Middle East.

Galerie Sofie Lachaert stands for introspective research in the fields of contemporary design, art and crafts. Objects as art or art as an object; questioning function and representation, the gallerys carefully selected objects communicate with space, interior and the human body. The gallery is an important platform for designers who freely cross the borderlines between applied and visual arts, offering its visitors an overall picture of the works of prominent designers; from all over the world and in a vast range of disciplines. A unique presentation is developed for each exhibition. Each artist and each theme gets its own atmosphere, its own world. It makes every visit to the gallery worthwhile, even for the many regular visitors, amongst them collectors and museum curators worldwide, attracted by the quality of the presented work, the daring choices, the interesting themes.

GALLERY SEOMI
SEOUL / KOREA Byung - Hoon Choi, Korea Jin Jang, Korea Myungsun Kang, Korea Sanghoon Kim, Korea Hunchung Lee, Korea

Gallery SEOMI has introduced contemporary design that captures the values of Koreas naturalistic aesthetics and artisanship. In Design Days Dubai, Gallery SEOMI intends to supercharge the new movements in Korean design that are combined with originality and practicability in harmony. The limited-edition works, handcrafted by contemporary designers, have their roots in traditional aesthetics, techniques, and materials. They go beyond the realms of furniture to present a new concept that encompasses boundaries of art, design, and architecture. The works move away from convention through insights and flexible thinking about contemporary art and design in living; emphasize formativeness and functionalistic characteristics, and represent naturalism and organicism. At the same time, they present contemporary rendering of the aesthetics of time-honored traditional designs and crafts and suggest an important point of view that shows new possibilities for design and trends.

WASHINGTON / USA

Jens Praet, Belgium Tom Price, UK Tejo Remy, The Netherlands Rene Veenhuizen, The Netherlands Maarten De Ceulaer, Belgium Antonio Pio Saracino, Italy Shlomo Harush, USA Borek Sipek, Czech Republic

Industry Gallery opened in January, 2010, as the first gallery in the United States devoted exclusively to the presentation of 21st-century international design. In only its first year, the gallery garnered international attention for its strong roster of internationally-renowned designers, including not just established stars but up-and-coming talent as well. In May, 2011, the gallery opened a second location in Los Angeles, based on the strong interest received to date from this market and the lack of any true design galleries in the city. Indeed, several of the gallerys designers have their largest private collectors in Los Angeles, and the second location will allow to serve the growing base of design collectors in this important market. Occupying over 4,000 sq ft of a converted auto repair shop, the Washington gallery presents each designers work in the context of an installation, and invites each designer to draw upon other disciplines (video, sculpture, music) in the presentation of his or her work. The result is a three-dimensional painting that provides a complete presentation of each designers ethos.

J+A GALLERY
DUBAI / UAE

Ritchie Riediger, Germany Apoldakollektiv, Germany Heike Buelau, Germany

Founded in 2012 in Dubai, J+A Gallery was established to bring industrial design items and objects from the early 20th century to Dubai. The objects, from the 1900s to 1960s, are unique and the collection is now more and more complemented with salvaged, reclaimed and up-cycled products as well as contemporary design and art from Germany. The gallery is proud to present, for the first time in the region, a selection of rare industrial and mid-century design objects and salvaged goods from Germany and Central Europe. The idea of the gallery is to open the market and the minds of the people to the beauty of industrial design, classic materials with an enormous haptic value, like wood, ceramic, steel, and to display options of how to re-use material and forms from their original context and put them in a new context, with added value for today. Furthermore, J+A Gallery is committed to promote contemporary German artists and designers in the region.

MAJLIS GALLERY
DUBAI / UAE

Mustafa Ali, Syria Peter Collis, UK Jonathan Andersson, UK Race Furniture, UK

The Majlis Gallery has been established in Dubai since 1989. Alison Collins, founder and interior designer herself, was entranced by the region, especially with the architecture and the ambiance of the old wind tower houses in Al Fahidi. In 1978, she secured the lease on a wind tower villa where she played host to many informal soirees in the majlis, hence the name, introducing artists both professional and amateur to a somewhat culturally bereft community over the next 10 years. The gallerys vision then and now is to bring to Dubai artists of international repute and to support them in their exploration and interpretation of the Middle East into visual forms. An ever-changing collection of threedimensional objects, along with fine art and furniture defines the gallerys programme. Over the years, the Majlis Gallery has hosted countless exhibitions, seminars and cultural events and formed a model for the feasibility study that ultimately led to the restoration of all the remaining buildings in Al Fahidi, and its emergence as a cultural centre for Dubai.

Mariam Al Nassar 20th Century Decorative Arts is the culmination of a longstanding passion for beautiful design and interiors. The gallerys goal is to bring attractive, original design to this region, and to offer works that are selected with an understanding of the local market and culture. Another goal is to offer styles of furniture that may not have been encountered before, increasing the potential to create unique and personal living environments. Works are selected for their visual impact and high quality, and it is important to the gallery to offer the best of international design. As part of our ethos, the gallery promotes vintage pieces - works spanning the whole 20th century - because of the gallerys love for things that evoke a sense of history, and have as we like to think, a story to tell.

Salon 94 in collaboration with R&R is pleased to present the work of Barry X Ball and Rick Owens. The presentation will include bust sculptures by Barry X Ball made from Belgian black marble alongside the white Sivec marble furniture of Rick Owens. Rick Owens founded his own fashion label in 1994, winning the prestigious CFDA Emerging Talent award in 2002, and the following year was appointed as artistic director of Revillon, the long-established luxury fur company. Owens first furniture collection was shown in Paris in 2007 at Jousse Entreprise and subsequently in London in 2009. In addition to being a seminal figure in fashion design, Owens is a major new talent in furniture design. On view in Dubai is the artists first all white marble furniture collection seen together for the first time. Barry X Ball is an artist that creates figurative works in stone, immaculately executed with groundbreaking techniques while directly engaging their historical antecedents. On view are two busts executed in black Belgian marble with laboriously refined details. His work has been exhibited at PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, Ballroom Marfa, and Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall. Since 2002, Salon 94 has presented exhibitions of innovative art and design. The gallery has three exhibition spaces in New York City and produces exhibitions that challenge traditional boundaries between fine art, functional objects, and the decorative arts.

Sarah Myerscough Fine Art presents Raw Design, a project that considers the age-old tradition of woodworking and its use in contemporary design. Ancient techniques and materials are re-invigorated through unique commissioned pieces by renowned international artists and designers, who are leading innovators in contemporary craft today. Through the specifically created display for Design Days Dubai, the artists have examined the creative relationship between form and function as they re-define the traditional boundaries between fine art, craft and design. Ultimately, wood as a material in all its guises, is fundamental not only to the designers craft, but also to the philosophical notions of ecological sustainability, and humanitys on-going and innate relationship to nature and the organic. The designers are in prestigious museum collections around the world and work in Europe and America.

Moissonnier
Khalid Shafars design interpretation had transformed two of Moissonnier chests to pieces of arts kind of sculptures- that tell the stories of two legendry horses that achieved victories during the Dubai World Cup and left behind great memories. The dramatic side of these stories is that these legendry horses do not exist today and had tragically died for different reasons. Therefore, the title of these Moissonnier pieces is Headless Horses. The two horses according to their year of victory are: Dubai Millennium in 2000 and Rewilding in 2011. In the design process, Khalid Shafar had to always consider the Moissonnier brand ethos: The Art of Painting, Sculpturing, and producing exceptional items with French traditional cabinetmaking while reflecting his local flavour.

Tai Ping
Tai Ping is an international custom company recognized as the carpet designer and manufacturer of choice for a discerning global clientele. When I began to research Tai Ping to understand its history and design philosophies, it was this line that gave me inspiration: Tai Ping collections are inspired by global trends in design, fashion and art. I may not be a fashion designer or a fashion trendsetter, but I am well aware of the latest industry trends. We have seen many fashion houses and international brands adapt cultural patterns, embroideries and traditional techniques for their fashion collections. I have always been fascinated with our local Emirati craft of talli embroidery and the hours women spend detailing, resulting in beautiful pieces of art with which women use to decorate their dresses. Design Road Professional

Design Road Professional Dubai, organised by the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), Tashkeel, and the Creative Dialogue Association (CDA), was a sixmonth programme, which ran from September 2012 to March 2013. An eminent jury selected four Emirati designers to participate in the programme including furniture and objects designer Khalid Shafar, graphic and fashion designer Aljoud Lootah, visual artist Zeinab Al Hashemi, and computational artist and designer Salem Al Mansoori. Their final, developed works were showcased at Design Days Dubai 2013. As part of the extensive training, the designers participated in the London Design Festival and Barcelona Design Week, where they visited notable design studios, galleries, shops, design schools and museums, to gain inspiration for their own projects. During the programme, the designers met with renowned international designers to gain invaluable insights on current design trends and practices, and shadowed them in their workplace with senior design instructors. Under the Shadowing Programme, the designers participated in discussions surrounding production, marketing, sales, and the use of materials when creating design. During their stint in Europe, the artists attended workshops at the Elisava School of Design in Barcelona, and a four-day workshop led by Kingston University, covering numerous facets of design from conception to execution. Based on the extensive training and research undertaken, the designers returned to Dubai to develop their proposals, and a production consultant from Barcelona supported and guided the designers with weekly online follow up sessions. A fully detailed Production Process Template was presented to the designers, where professionals from the design industry oversaw participants, providing evaluation and critique on the proposals to be prototyped and produced. Prototyping and production was completed in Dubai, where the designers directly supervised the production process and submitted a weekly production report. The designers met with international experts who specifically travelled to Dubai to discuss the final designs which were produced for the presentation.

Light was adopted as a key element in the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) because of its importance in the art of photography. Light can be the difference between a good picture and a wonderful image. Our understanding of light and our ability to capture it through a camera lens would not have been possible, had it not been for the efforts of the scholar Al Hassan Ibn Al Haytham. His findings and principles in the field of optics, a century ago, helped lay the foundations for modern day photography. To commemorate his contributions toward the field of photography, the grand prize award for the second season of the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award has been dedicated to the beauty of light in photography.

The Analogia Project by Andrea Mancuso and Emilia Serra

Italian design duo Andrea Mancuso and Emilia Serra will present an installation as part of The Analogia Project series, the first of its kind to be seen in the region. The project has gained international success and press attention during acclaimed installations during Milans 2012 design week and the London Design Festival 2011. The use of simple materials is juxtaposed with the use of digital technologies: the experimental approach of The Analogia Project is characterized by the fusion of tradition with innovation, artisan crafts with computational software, age old materials with contemporary technologies. The effect is ethereal as the pieces connect and merge with the space in which they exist. The installation for Design Days Dubai has been especially designed to refer to the origins of modern design. It will feature pivotal pieces of design: a Le Corbusier chaise longue, a Mackintosh chair, and the Noguchi table. These pieces are often still present in design fairs highlighting the importance of these iconic designers. This installation derives from a reflection of the importance of this period for contemporary design. The visual impact of the three dimensional sketch will challenge conventional spatial representations and the viewer will be forced to reconsider their perception of the familiar objects they embody.
The Analogia Projectis the result of a long-term collaboration between Andrea Mancuso and Emilia Serra. They met while studying and working at the Royal College of Art in 2008. Their different backgrounds have allowed them to experiment a visual language able to explore at the same time both the space and the objects, which merge becoming part of a unique entity. Analogia explores the materialisation of the imaginary, in its transient state of flux; a drawing in the air that traces the fine line between abstract thought and concrete reality. www.analogiaproject.com

Ja-ri by Jihoon Ha
presented by _Croft

The Ja-ri installation at Design Days Dubai is a sculpture of organic form, giving the viewer the feeling of sitting in a ridgeline of the desert. The sensation is calming and unrestrained, the ultimate seating for the human form. Jihoon Has design concept reverberates the composition of poetry; all the unnecessary structures are eliminated, and only the simplest essence is produced with the greatest attention to detail. The Scottish leather used in Ja-ri provides not only the feeling of luxury, but also the promise of the highest quality and comfort. In larger spaces, several pieces may be added to create an even more intense space atmosphere, and thus, enabling more people to experience this unique place to sit and contemplate. You will see the artists attempt to cross the boundary between art and design, bringing art closer to everyday life.
Jihoon Ha, the internationally known designer from Korea, studied art in Seoul and graduated from the School of Design in Copenhagen. Ha is now a professor of Kaywon School of Art & Design. With a magical feeling and profound understanding towards art and design, Ha Jihoon integrates design concepts of Scandinavia and the Orient. www.jihoonha.com

Time Dubai by Humans Since 1982

presented by Victor Hunt Designart Dealer

The Time Dubai installation is made of special 288 two-handed analog clocks, powered by 576 electrical engines. All 288 clock houses together create one giant display similar to that of a digital display, all hands move to their new location, creating a choreography of 576 rotating hands to form extensive texts besides elaborate customized patterns and graphics. Brilliantly re-contextualizing time in a mix of old and new, the installation is a graphically conceptual, mechanical and engineered based design project. It relates the digital and alphanumerical type font possibilities in general of the typical analog clock when combined in groups of 24, as for the original Clock Clock, or much more like for the Time Dubai wall installation which features an impressive 288 clock houses. The Clock Clock project achieved the digital/analog clock configuration possibilities with a set-up of 24 analog clock converting into digital time as your regular alarm clock. The challenge was to bring the type font possibilities to life and hence, after achieving animations to establish the right size, the production of a major clock wall was started - 12 times the original Clock Clock and reaching the full potential of the original concept. With a finalresult demonstrating such effortless wit, its hard to believe no one might have thought of it before.
Humans Since 1982 was founded by Per Emanuelsson and Bastian Bischoff in 2008 during their studies in Gothenburg. Both graduates bonded over ashared passion to make functional art. The work of Humans Since 1982 has toured the world ever since, it is mechanical and compelling, using everyday shapes and objects we are all familiar with in ways we wouldnt suspect.

The Nurdler Photography by Studio Swine

Construction Series uses waste building materials from building sites across Dubai to form a furniture series. Studio Swine will be creating one piece of furniture a day during the fair using reclaimed concrete, rebar crushed marble and camel leather, produced by UAE based Al Khaznak Tannery, in a style which both references the internal modular structures of skyscrapers and the traditional geometric patterns of the UAE. Retaining a relationship to architecture both in material and form, the Construction Series will celebrate modernism and traditional Arabic ornamentations. Studio Swine is interested in exploring the new and the exotic through materials, places and processes. At the core of their practice is material experimentation, balancing a rich sense of aesthetics with ecological thinking, and a belief that sustainable design without desire is not sustainable. We are very excited to be visiting Dubai and making a piece of furniture a day from the off-cuts of the cities ever changing skyline. Dubai is a city that we have always wanted to experience and so to be invited during Design Days Dubai is a great honour.
Studio Swine is a collaboration between Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves. Azusa graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Alexander from the Ruskin School of Fine Art Oxford before both gaining an MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art. Operating in the fields of design, fashion and architecture, Studio Swine has exhibited at the Barbican Art Centre, London Design Museum, New York and London Fashion Week and Gwangju Biennale curated by Ai Wei Wei. Illusion Pearl by Khalid Shafar

in cooperation with Carwan Gallery
Extraction process RAK Pearls

The pearl industry, once the most important activity in the United Arab Emirates, was tightly woven into the Arabian Gulf culture that dates back around 7,000 years, leaving behind a rich heritage of traditions. Emirati designer Khalid Shafar found inspiration for the Illusion project one night in Dubai while observing the dynamic lines created by a rope weaving over timber frames. The geometric shapes formed, cast radiant shadows evoking the motion and speed captured in a snapshot of a city highway by night. Illusion is an optical effect created by the engineered tension between rope lines and frame. Dubais long-lasting pearling tradition is revisited, using the materials splendor in a sleek visual design to create a unique seating object that invokes visual memories of dynamic city life. Illusion Pearl seat will be made using cultured pearls that are locally produced by Emirati Company RAK Pearls. More than 8,000 cultured pearls in ninety meters of chain will be used to weave the timber frame of the seat. The live performance presented by Carwan Gallery will include the opening of live oysters and the presentation of several craft techniques. The Illusion Pearl seat, a unique piece, will celebrate a long tradition of the Arabian Gulf and new avenues for contemporary design.
Khalid Shafar always had a passion for art and design and after completing a degree in Fine Arts and Interior Design decided to leave his career in marketing and follow his passion. Khalid studied and specialized in furniture and objects design, at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, UK, and at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, New Zealand. www.khalidshafar.com

Shredded by Jens Praet

presented by (in cooperation with Industry Gallery)

Shredded is a live-performance by Italy-based, Belgian designer Jens Praet in collaboration with Ivo van den Baar and Almer Dumont from Wandschappen. The trio has been invited to produce a Shredded Side Tableduring Design Days Dubaiwith approximately 6 kilos of glossy leftover magazines transformed into a mass of splintered paper - materials which will comprise the main ingredients for work. As a reaction to the huge amounts of wastepaper produced in offices, Shredded finds another functional use for it, turning an otherwise abstract concept into a reality.Non-useful documents and leftover magazines are transformed into valuable and useful objects. To this end, confetti from shredded paper and resin are mixed into a mould to harden and become a rigid object. The paper-resin composite boasts a firmness similar to wood and has a unique appearance. Paper waste returns to our living or working area as functional furniture, bringing to mind just what little thought we give to general use of paper. Shredded started as a research project, and turned out to be a continuously growing furniture collection that ended up transforming seemingly useless documents and leftover magazines into useful objects.
Belgian designer Jens Praet studied Industrial Design in Florence and attended masterclasses at the renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven under DroogDesigns co-founder Gijs Bakker. In 2007 he established, Studio Jens Praet, a design studio based inPanzano in Chianti, a small town near Florence. Praets work is also in the permanentcollection of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. www.jenspraet.com

Design Days Dubai and the World Food Programme team up to fight Hunger, the Worlds Greatest Solvable Problem
Design Days Dubai, in the spirit of doing well by doing good, is lending its unique platform to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to mobilise much needed support for the fight against hunger in the Middle East through a series of fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns in March 2013. Nearly 900 million people around the world one in eight people do not have enough food to leave an active and healthy life, including in areas of the Middle East where conflicts have triggered humanitarian crises and chronic poverty affects large groups of populations. WFP, the worlds largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide and the United Nations food assistance arm, considers hunger to be the worlds greatest solvable problem. As, each year, on average, WFP provides food assistance to more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries. But WFP doesnt do this work alone. Partnerships are more important than ever as no single organisation can address todays complex food and nutrition security challenges. Funded completely by voluntary donations, WFP works with corporations and leading institutions that have demonstrated commitment to solving global social issues and are eager to lend their platform, passionate teams and network to support the fight against hunger, while also meeting their core business objectives. Design Days Dubais support will benefit WFPs greatest needs in the Middle East region. In the first half of 2013, WFP plans to scale up our emergency food assistance operations to reach 2.5 million beneficiaries inside Syria, as well as 755,000 Syrian refugees in neighboring countries. In Yemen, where child malnutrition rates are among the highest in the world and where half of the population is either hungry or on the edge of hunger, WFP reached almost 5 million people in 2012 with food assistance and plans to reach a similar number in 2013. In addition to providing emergency assistance, WFP also invests in the long-term development of communities and societies. WFPs school meals programmes, which encourage children to come to school and help them concentrate better in class, benefit more than 2.5 million underprivileged children just in the Middle East for just 25 US cents a meal. A global survey recently conducted by Nielsen highlights that 75% of consumers in the Middle East and Africa prefer to buy from, work for, and invest in companies that give back to society, and eradicate extreme poverty and hunger comes as the number one cause they think companies should support. The newly-born partnership between Design Days Dubai and WFP will help rally even more supporters to the cause, driven by the vision of a world free from hunger.
