General Description

As one of the key components of Alcatel-Lucents next generation network (NGN) portfolio, the Alcatel-Lucent 7510 Media Gateway (MG) provides seamless inter working of voice connections between the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and packet networks as well as between packet networks. By enabling voice transmission and service delivery over data networks, service providers can maximize the value of current investments while enabling future service rollout to incorporate the latest technologies. The 7510 MG combines the reliability of voice networks with the speed and efficiency of data networks. It features an advanced architecture and interfaces optimized for packet voice applications, together with carrier-class reliability, availability and quality.

A single platform, the 7510 MG supports multiple media gateway applications and facilitates the evolution of the PSTN towards a voice over packet network. Based on its native TDM and voice over packet capabilities, the 7510 MG supports multiple services ranging from simple TDM switching over NGN Class 4 and Class 5 packet voice to packet-to packet gateway solutions for network peering. Using open and standardized signaling and control protocols such as Megaco/H.248 and SIGTRAN, the 7510 MG can be deployed with Alcatel-Lucents own softswitch platforms as well as integrated into any multi vendor next generation network.
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 2-3

The present release of the software 7510 Media Gateway includes Border Gateway (BGW) capabilities compliant to national standards for IP interconnect/peering. This function makes it possible to migrate cost-effectively, reusing network elements, lowering operational cost, and consolidating traffic types in a single IP pipe.

The Release 3.0 is based on Release 2.7.2 and includes all features and functions of Rel 2.7.2 and the preceding releases.

Known issues and workarounds

Restrictions valid for the current release

The automatic selection of the ftp interface (=parameter 'any') is not supported by this release. The ftp interface must be configured explicitly with the command : define ip tf-class itf ftp {voice|mgc|oam} This release supports a max. dynamic load of 200 coAPS on the BGW. Only non-hitless software upgrade is supported without restrictions. For restrictions of hitless software upgrade see the Product Description and the document 7510 MGW Software Upgrade Customer Manual. The documents are listed in Table 1.1 Documentation list This release requires SCM2 variant 3FZ30084AAAB or 3FZ30084BAAB. Previous SCM variants provide only limited functionality due to less memory capacity. Timer settings recommended: Prov. Response Timer: 500ms MGC origin. Pend. Limit: 3 MG origin. Pend. Limit: 3 MGEM related restrictions: It is not possible to install the MGEM software package without admin rights. All data will be lost if the software is installed from a different user. DNS must be configured on MGEM. The MGEM shows a photographic view of the 7510 front side, including valid status LEDs, which means LED showing green are indeed green on the 7510. Exception: During start up of a board and while it synchronizes data between active/standby boards, the LED is flashing. This flashing is not shown on the MGEM screen, but the MGEM shows the respective LED steady amber.
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 6-2

Restriction on first save of config file after boot: It is mandatory to wait until the box is up and running, i.e. an LBI is assigned to all active MCMs, before changing and saving any configuration. Gigabit autoneg has to be explicitly configured: default is 1GB fix full duplex. For 1+1 and N+1 PIM redundancy, the standby interfaces may be operationally down on A7510 or on the Peer device as long as all links are equipped and the standby PIM is up and running. Only for PIM1 card: If the interface board 3FZ30086ABAA is used for G-Ethernet in an N+1 redundancy configuration with autoneg enabled on the Gig-Ethernet interface, a transient recovery action (PIM takeover, link protection, local LOS on a standby interface) causes all standby interfaces to re-initialize. A permanent recovery situation on N+1 (no standby PIM, no standby link, or LOS) brings all standby (non-traffic) links down. CAS Signaling is not released in this build, only for lab testing IPSEC is provided on the Fast Ethernet interfaces for control data, not for voice using the G-Ethernet interface E1/ T1 board configuration rules: Restriction to one clock source per E1 card On the E1/ T1 board only the links 1,9,17 and 25 can be used as clock line source

Explanation of the Border GW function: Duplicated RTP packets are discarded when the bearer traffic is using transcoding. When no transcoding is used, duplicated packets cannot be detected and discarded. See previous ticket GW1_00086533. IKEv1 (to be improved in maintenance package) File transfer via ftp is restricted to the OAM interface

Performing first-time installation

Important points to be considered during initial box configuration The auto-reboot flag on all cards must be enabled for live traffic systems, while lab systems can be operated differently
diag autoreboot enable

It is recommended to change the netman password

define netman password

It is recommended to disable the diag user

disable diag user Important points to be considered for VBMCM3E and VBMCM7E configuration

The mix of codecs to be used in the network can be configured for optimal utilization of the voice processing hardware in the 7510 Media Gateway. The share of each codec type used shall be estimated, while the processing power/resource intensive codecs (e.g., G723) should be given more weight to ensure sufficient resources during high traffic. Entering the configuration details for the share of codecs is done by Alcatel-Lucent field support. This means we assume maximum usage of the most resource consuming codec. The codecs in order of resource consumption are:
1. G.711appendix 2. G.711without appendix 3. G.723 (may not be applicable in all markets) 4. G.726 (may not be applicable in all markets) 5. G.729 (may not be applicable in all markets) 6. unrestricted digital info (UDI, clear channel) Example: So the worst case scenario if all codecs are used is 97% usage of G.723, 1% usage for the other codecs. The command: define dsp capacity profile codec 0 1 0 97 1 1
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-2

Example: If you just use G711appendix and G726: The command: define dsp capacity profile codec 0 1 0 0 99 0 AMR codec explanation to be given to customers employing this codec type.

Performing upgrades

See also 7510 MGW Software Upgrade Customer Manual chapter Document deliverables page 1-5.

After each configuration change issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system.

Important points to be considered for MGEM installation

MGEM 3.0.0.70 provides a new feature to display optionally the system name instead of the Gateway OAM IP address in the MGEM window title (internal reference: GW1_00109126). Please refer to chapter New features - MGEM.

When installing the MGEM in CMC the following MGEM preference settings are recommened:
Polling: 60 sec Timeout: 10 sec Retry: 3 sec

The automatic selection of the ftp interface (=parameter 'any') is not supported by this release. The ftp interface must be configured explicitly with the command :
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-3

define ip tf-class itf ftp {voice|mgc|oam}

Important points to be considered for upgrade to R3.0 B19g

With the upgrade to SW release B19g the following settings have be checked/changed: Pleaser refer to the appendix TGW and BGW Related H.248 and VoicePort specific Timer Settings and Related Configurable Parameters on page A-18.

With the upgrade to SW release B19e the following settings have be checked/changed:

IP flooding settings:
To optimize the ftp performance the following IP flooding thresholds are recommended for B19e:
define define define define define define define define define ip ip ip ip ip ip ip ip ip flooding flooding flooding flooding flooding flooding flooding flooding flooding protocol protocol protocol protocol protocol service service service service thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds thresholds sctp udp tcp icmp ip snmp h248 iua m2ua 1000 2000 4000 10000 10001 10002 1000 2000 4000 200 300 400 200 400 800 16 32 64 1500 2000 5670 1000 2000 4000 1000 2000 4000

T.38 settings:
Depending on the network elements and the T.38 equipment involved in a T.38 transmission the nominal-delay value may need to be ajusted. Some network elements or T.38 equipment may have high signal delay. This may cause T.38 transmission problems. In that case configuring a smaller nominal delay value at the 7510 Gateway may help, e.g. 150ms. The default nominal delay value is 300ms. The nominal delay value can be set by issuing command:
define fax default nominal-delay <value>

3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010

8-4

To make the configuration change persistent and reboot safe the following command must be issued:
save

The nominal delay setting can be displayed by issuing command:

view fax default

With the upgrade to SW release B19c the CPU alarm thresholds shall be updated as described below.
define cpu alarm threshold all 70 90

Issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system.

With the upgrade to SW release B19b or with an upgrade from a release before B19b to B19c the memory threshold settings shall be updated as described below.
define memory alarm threshold cim all 75 85 define memory alarm threshold cim heap 90 95 define memory alarm threshold sfm heap 80 90 for SCM with 512M memory or less (check with view module configuration) define memory alarm threshold scm heap 85 95 for SCM with memory 1GB or larger (check with view module configuration) define memory alarm threshold scm heap 75 80

Issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system.

The automatic selection of the ftp interface (=parameter 'any') is not supported by this release. The ftp interface must be configured explicitly with the command :

define ip tf-class itf ftp {voice|mgc|oam}

3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010

8-5

With B19 a change of the MTP2 parameter behaviour was introduced using M2UA on PIM2 (defect record: GW1_00109580). Therefore after the upgrade to B19 the following actions are required: - Issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system. - Issue the reboot system command.

If the BFD feature is to be used please check after the system upgrade that the IP interface type for application "Default is set to "any".
view ip tfclass parameter

If not, change the traffic class type definition of default IP application to any:
define ip tf-class itf dflt any

Important points to be considered for upgrade from any R3.0 build prior B18c to B18c or higher:
Following actions are required when replacing a PIM board by a PIM2 board : - make sure all en.pimx.1 ethernet configurations have version v2(DIX) - check by view ethernet configuration en.pim<x>.1 - if any other version is listed, change it by define ethernet version

From build B18ca onwards corrections with the APV handling - storage in 'config.txt' - is delivered. To avoid an unwanted change of configured values, a check should be done on the current settings. 1. Before the system upgrade is started check the APV settings of the current configuration.
view memory alarm configuration

-> note these values 2. Upgrade the system to B18ca and check the APV settings again
view memory alarm configuration

-> compare these settings with the original values saved in step 1
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-6

3. If the APV settings were changed with the upgrade set the original values saved in step 1.
define memory alarm threshold {scm|sfm|mcm|pim|cim|slot|all}{p0|p1|p2|p3|p4|heap|all} <lower> <upper>[<sl0t>]

4. Issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system. If this SW is running, no further action is needed when doing SW upgrades in the future.

Important points to be considered for upgrade to R3.0 B14D

When upgrading to B14d, due to an SW fault, all LAPD links are associated by default to Application Server Id (AS Id) equal 0. Therefore it is recommended to check all LAPD link associations and correct it if necessary. To do so, proceed as described below. Issue the following commands to view the LAPD link association.
view sgw status

The signalling gateway status is displayed. Take the 'sgw_id' with 'LBI' equal 'sfm' as input for command
define sgw scope <sgw_id>

Then issue the command

view lapd link

The configured LAPD links are displayed. Check for each 'Link Nmb' the 'AS Id' by issuing the command
view lapd link <Link Nmb>

In case the displayed 'AS Id' is wrong for the selected link, issue the command
define lapd as-id <link-number> <as-id>

to set the 'AS Id' to the correct value for this LAPD link
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-7

Issue the 'save' command on active SCM to store the settings persistent on the system.

Important points to be considered for upgrade to R3.0 B13C in case the actual release is older than B12B/B12C
For the SW release B12b the memory threshold settings shall be updated as described below.
define define define define define memory memory memory memory memory alarm alarm alarm alarm alarm threshold threshold threshold threshold threshold scm sfm mcm pim cim all all all all all 70 70 70 70 70 80 80 80 80 80

For SCM with 1GB memory:

define memory alarm threshold scm heap 70 80

The actual settings can be displayed by issuing the command:

view memory alarm configuration

Important points to be considered for upgrade to R3.0 B13C in case the actual release is older than B10/B11/B11A New ftp settings
The SW release B10 provides a correction for ftp. This correction requires new settings for IP flooding. The following commands must be issued after the system has been upgraded to B10:
1. define ip flooding protocol thresholds udp 10000 10001 10002 2. define ip flooding protocol thresholds tcp 48 64 80 3. define ip flooding protocol thresholds icmp 200 300 400 4. define ip flooding protocol thresholds ip 4 8 12 5. define ip flooding protocol thresholds sctp 4 8 12 6. save
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-8

The successful modification of the IP flooding parameters can be verified by issuing the command:
view ip flooding protocol thresholds all

The system response must be:

IP Rate limitation Configuration: For threshold values, the unit is PACKET ---------------------------------------------------Protocol normal-thres flooding-thres drop-thres ---------------------------------------------------SCTP 4 8 12 UDP 10000 10001 10002 TCP 48 64 80 ICMP 200 300 400 IP 4 8 12 ----------------------------------------------------

New Auto Negotiation settings

The following commands must be issued to modify the auto negotiation settings for PIM2 boards. These new values are not applicable for PIM1 boards. The LLSD documents will be updated accordingly.
diag diag diag diag diag diag define define define define define define ethernet ethernet ethernet ethernet ethernet ethernet autoneg autoneg autoneg autoneg autoneg autoneg pa pa pa pa pa pa en.pim1.1 en.pim1.1 en.pim1.1 en.pim1.1 en.pim1.1 en.pim1.1 init eps lps rf nhop ui 1 0 0 1 1 1 300 300 300 300 300 300 0 0 0 0 0 50 RESET FD ACK FD ACK RF1 FD ACK RESET

The commands above are given as example for en.pimX.1 whereas X is 1. pimX represents the LBI of a PIM card and can be retrieved by issuing the command:
view chassis

The set of commands must be issued for all PIM cards equipped in the chassis.

Important points to be considered for upgrade to R3.0 from release R2.x The detailed upgrade procedure is documented in 3FZ-03757-BT00-DFZZA Upgrade Procedure Rel 2.7 to Rel 3.0 .
3FZ-02560-UAAA-DFZZA Edition 01 June 02, 2010 8-9

System to be upgraded must run at least with release Rel2.7.2. From Rel2.6 the upgrade shall be done manually board by board or with the nonhitless procedure. Ensure that the pak file containing the software is stored in the flash cards of both SCMs (slot 10 and 11). FPGA upgrade is only allowed on special request of Alcatel-Lucent technical specialist Incorrect upgrades can damage the firmware and may require replacement of the board if the firmware recovery can not be done on site. For correct initialization of the gateway with the new software after first boot a save of the config.txt file is required, further details see 3FZ-03757-BT00-DFZZA Upgrade Procedure Rel 2.7 to Rel 3.0 - see chapter Document deliverables page 1-5. During upgrade, the link protection (LPS) function has to be deactivated since the standby board is involved in the software change. The pak file contains the xml file term_id.xml, which is needed for configurable tdm termination Ids. The detailed description, how this xml file has to be used, is included in the Upgrade Procedure for R2.7 3FZ-03757-BT00-DFZZA Upgrade Procedure Rel 2.7 to Rel 3.0 - see chapter Document deliverables page 1-5. H.248.1 Core Protocol Timers T-Max Timer define mgw mg tmaxIn case of no MGC replies this timer <millseconds> value determines how long an MG originated transaction is retransmitted at most before being considered as having failed. Thus, it is related to the maximum time the MG waits for an MGC reply to an MG request. In case of the Ericsson MGC this maximum time might be related to the MGC attributes Normal MGC execution time (2000 msecs in Guildford) and MGC originated pending limit (5 in Guildford). Suggest to set it to 5000 msecs as the LONGTIMER (at-most-once-timer), Refer also to H.248.1 Section D.1.5. 8000 msecs

Remarks

UI command

Recommended value 8000 msecs

define mgw mg Value influences the time the replies and txn ids are kept on the atmost-timer SCM. A value of N msecs means <millseconds> that transaction request retransmissions received more than N msecs after the first transaction request are not recognized as repetitions any more. In Guildford the E/// MGC is configured with NormalMGExecution time of 2000 msecs and Request-retries is equal to 2. Therefore the atmostonce-timer (LONG-TIMER) should be set to a value greater than or equal to 2 * 2000 msecs = 4000 msecs. Taking additional network delay into account I suggest a value of 5000 msecs. This would also correspond with the Guildford MGC setting of the MG long provisional response timer value of 5000 msecs. See also Sections 7.1.3 and 7.1.5 of Ericssons TGW H.248 profile revision C. Refer also to H.248.1 Section D.1.5. define mgw mg initThe function of this timer is timer <millseconds> related to the exponentially increasing backoff if MG initiated retransmissions and is described in H.248.1 Section D.1.3. It's value should be less than T-MAX . Corresponding MGC side value does not seems to be configurable on the Ericsson MGC.
