Patch Panels
R&M patch panels are used for terminating horizontal or backbone installation cables and for serving as an interface to the various network equipment. In horizontal cabling, the RJ45 ports of the patch panel are connected in a star topology by four pair installation cables to the telecommunications outlets. In this way, network equipment such as host computers, concentrators, PABXs and so forth can be easily connected to the desired telecommunications outlets by means of patch/line cables. All R&M patch panels and connection modules comply with the standards of ISO/IEC 11801, EN 50173 and TIA/EIA 568B. The R&M patch panel range offers the industries most flexible and modular solution.

CP Series
The CP range of cabinets gives you a cost effective product with varied depth options. The roomy 800mm wide cabinet allows the installer to choose either 19, 21 or 23 spacing. The CP Series allows for large and easy management of cable runs either in the rear or down the cabinet sides. These cabinets give a broader range of equipment and cable management options, making this series very economically worthwhile. For 19, 21 and 23 applications, order brackets separately.
MR Series
The MR series, with improved cable management access, from the top and bottom of the cabinet and also front and rear of the base, allows additional access points which broaden the option of cabinet placement and cable management.

Media Conversion
Allied Telesis is the Worlds largest media converter manufacturer. The vast range of products provides connectivity solutions for almost all the needs of Carrier, Enterprise, and Small Business customers. Allied Telesis media converters enable connection of disparate cabling types in networks where many cabling types exist. Network segments may also operate at different speeds and media converters can be used to convert between one speed and another. Typically, media converters are used to connect copper and optical fibre cabling that coexist in a network. Converters exist in a variety of stand-alone, multi-port and modular form factors. These different physical forms address the need for different applications and conversion densities.

MT8304-STSC
An OTDR injects a series of optical pulses into the fibre under test. It also extracts, from the same end of the fibre, light that is scattered back and reflected back from points in the fibre where the index of refraction changes. (This is equivalent to the way that an electronic TDR measures reflections caused by changes in the impedance of the cable under test). The intensity of the return pulses is measured and integrated as a function of time, and is plotted as a function of fibre length. An OTDR may be used for estimating the fibres length and overall attenuation, including splice and mated-connector losses. It may also be used to locate faults, such as breaks. Fibre channels have been divided in three classes of performance depending on minimum length over which applications are supported: OF-300m, OF-500m, OF-2000m. It is assumed that every single channel within an installation includes fibres of the same specification. Component selection will be made based on channel length, application and possibly life of installation. Performance of a channel is based on a single wave length.

Bending Radius
In data sheets of cable manufacturers the bending radius is defined as a multiple of the outside cable diameter. (See extract from a data sheet of a data cable below.) There are two relevant minimum bending radii: one for the laying of the installation cable and one for the installation cable once it is installed (without mechanical load). Recommended tempearture and cable tensile strenght are also in the example extract from a data sheet of a cable below.

Length restrictions for fixed cabling links Length calculations for various generic cabling systems The following table can be used to calculate the maximum length for fixed cable installations. The length of cable calculated by the planner or installer for fixed cable installations must not be exceeded under any circumstances, even for possible expansions. Note that if any maintenance work is required, different lengths of patch cables or connection cables must not be used, otherwise error-free operation of the previously calculated transmission links cannot be guaranteed. When an optional consolidation point or a cross-connect panel or both are present, the 4 different cabling systems must be differentiated.

maximum length for the fixed horizontal cabling (m) combined length for the patch/connection cables, equipment/workplace side (m) length of the CP cable (CP = consolidation point) (m) the cable attenuation factor between stranded cable (UTP = 1.2 and STP = 1.5) and solid-conductor cable (installation cables) the cable attenuation factor between stranded cable (CP cable UTP = 1.2 and STP = 1.5) and solid-conductor cable (installation cables)
When ambient temperature during operation is above 20C, H must be reduced by 0.2% per C for screened installations; for unscreened installations the value is 0.4% for above 20C 40C and 0.6% for > 40C 60C a; this length reduction is to be used to provide a margin for attenuation differences at high frequencies. Flexible cables have a higher attenuation (UTP = multiplication factor 1.2 and STP = multiplication factor 1.5) than installation cables.

Restrictions: The physical length of the permanently installed (if no CP cable is present) installation cable, permanent link, may not exceed the maximum length of 90m. The physical length of the channel may not exceed the maximum length of 100 m. The consolidation point (CP) must be at least 15m away from the floor distributor. If a MUTO (multi-user terminal outlet) is used, the workplace connection cables must not be longer than 20m. Patch and connection cables may not be longer than 5 m. Sample calculations for a permanently installed cabling link: Screened Cat 5e installation (STP) at normal temperature Figure A H = 109 - FX -> 109 m ( 5m + m ) x 1.5 = 94m
The maximum allowed fixed cable link would theoretically be 94m, but must be reduced to 90m to comply with the standards. Unscreened Cat 6 installation (UTP) at 35C ambient temperature Figure C H = 106 3 a FX CY -> 106m 3 m- (5m+ 5m) x 1.2) (15m x 1.2) = 73m 35C 20C = 15C 15 x 0.4% = 6% 73m x (1- 0.06) = 69 (68.7m)
For this project a maximum length of 69m of fixed cabling is permitted, with a maximum 15m CP cable and a connection cable length of maximum 5m.

Optical Fibre Power Loss Budget Question: Solution: How do I calculate the power loss budget for my fibre channel? The link attenuation (Optical Power Loss) must be calculated for each fibre cabling run. Copper testing is much easier as the limit line is the same regardless of length.
Allowable loss Connector : 0.75 dB Splice : 0.3 dB Cable @ 850nm : 3.5 dB / km Cable @ 1300nm : 1.0 dB / km Assuming a 50m link had two connectors and a splice and we decide to measure at 850nm, the affordable power loss budget would be calculated in the following way. Connector 0.75 dB Cable @ 850nm 0.175 dB (3.5dB/km) Splice 0.3 dB Connector 0.75 dB Power Loss Budget 1.975 dB Gigabit Ethernet, which has a loss requirement of 3.25 dB, assumes that the connector loss is less than 0.75 dB, and hence the standard reflects typical losses of 0.5 dB for the connector. Summary: Do not accept a Power Loss Reading without a calculated Power Loss Budget. For certification to ANSI/TIA/EIA 568B, ISO/IEC 11801 and EN50173, you must test at both wavelengths in one direction and record the allowable loss budget. Mandrel Wraps Mandrel wraps are recommended for multimode optical fibre measurements. You will eliminate the high order modes coming from the LED light source and thus measure only the low order modes which run in the centre of the fibre. This measurement will be repeatable. Find below the correct mandrel wrap to choose for the various multimode fibres.
