District attorney report: Felony cases decrease

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Washington County District Attorneys Office saw a slight decline in several of the cases that were filed in court in 2012 compared with the previous year while other areas increased, according to information presented by District Attorney Mark Bensen. Bensen presented his report to the Washington County Board May 14. Bensen explained that the five prosecutors in his office are paid by the state of Wisconsin while the nine other office staff are paid by county taxpayers. According to Bensens report, the number of defendants charged declined from 1,771 in 2011 to 1,658 last year. Also: The number of charges for felonies declined from 592 in 2011 to 570 last year; The number of misdemeanors filed increased from 1,270 in 2011 to 1,453 last year; The number of criminal traffic counts declined from 989 in 2011 to 969 in 2012; The number of traffic pretrials increased from 945 in 2011 to 1,055 in 2012; The number of sentences imposed with probation increased from 527 in 2011 to 548 last year. The number of sentences imposed with prison time increased from 102 in 2011 to 121 last year. The number of sentences imposed with extended supervision increased from 101 in 2011 to 120 last year while sentences imposed with jail time decreased from 594 in 2011 to 553 last year. Bensen said that traffic pretrials increased, and explained that once a month people charged with traffic offenses are in courthouse and the district attorney meet with the defendants to negotiate a pleas bargain to avoid trial. According to Bensen, his office will handle 40 to 50 trials annually. He said the big change has been that the number of multi-day trials have increased, citing a three-day drunk driving trial he was involved with earlier this year. As the criminal penalties go up, the stakes are higher, some of these trials are taking a longer period of time, Bensen said. Bensen said that one trend related to drunk driving involves increased instances of individuals intoxicated on medications or substances other than alcohol. He said those cases can be more challenging to prosecute. A recent trend has been the increase in heroin use and overdoses. Bensen said that pretty much all of the heroin in southeast Wisconsin comes from Milwaukee. Every heroin

drug overdose case our law enforcement officers treat as a crime. Another change that has occurred involves the victim impact panels which individuals convicted of drunk driving are required to attend. The recent change involved requiring attendance at the impact panels for

Memorial Day
Keep the peace
By Tresa Erickson It's no secret. While weddings are supposed to be a source of joy, they can also be a source of conflict. As soon as the question is popped and the engagement is announced, couples are often bombarded with advice from wellmeaning family and friends. Here are some tips to help you keep your sanity intact and conflict to a minimum during the planning of your wedding. Be realistic_Know from the get-go that people are going to be excited and many of them will want to be involved in your wedding planning, even if it just doling out advice to you. Involve as many of them as you can, but never lose sight of the fact that it is your wedding. Listen to what they have to say, use what you can and leave it at that. Never ever give someone the upper hand, unless it is what you and your beloved want. Be understanding_Some people can't help themselves. They have an opinion and they simply must share it with you, even if it is not really their place to do so. Again, honor their need to help by listening but don't feel obligated to follow their advice. Thank them for their advice, reassure them you will take it under consideration and move on. Be direct_Some people cannot take no for an answer. Be aware of this and learn how to deal with the pressure. Let them know that while you appreciate their idea, it will not work for you. Do not give in and make unnecessary compromises. If they continue to push, explain to them what you have chosen to do so instead. The additional information might be enough to satisfy them. Be clear_Give those involved clearly defined roles and make your wishes known to them. Communicate daily, either through email or phone, what has and hasn't been done. Set up a website to keep everyone informed of the progress. The more you communicate, the less chance there will be of a misunderstanding later. Be proactive_Spot the potential for conflict and take steps to avoid it. If your parents divorced on unhappy terms, do not expect them to work together on your wedding. Have each of them assist you with different tasks and seat them apart at your wedding. The same goes for any other family or friends in conflict. Respect their need for distance. Keeping the peace at a wedding can be difficult, but it is not impossible. The key is to listen as much as possible, be gracious but firm, and communicate your wishes. Your wedding should be a reflection of you and the person you're marrying, not those helping to foot the bill or standing by you at the ceremony. Just you and your beloved.

Staging your home to sell

By Sam Erickson Theres only one chance to make a first impression. Youve got to put your best foot forward. These are both cliches, but they absolutely apply when you are trying to sell your home, particularly in a challenging market. There are a few secrets to staging a home that will allow you to make a great first impression on potential buyers. One thing you can do is add extra light to your home, particularly if you live in a traditionally dreary part of the country. Consider adding bulbs with extra wattage to the fixtures or more lamps to your home. Clean windows inside and out and consider changing out window fixtures for lighter, more transparent ones. Of course, if some of the lights dont work, youll want to get them fixed, and that should really be the first step in prepping your home for sale fixing anything thats broken. Whether it is a leaky faucet or a door that doesnt close all the way, making a cosmetic change to the house will send the subtle signal that it has been well cared for in the time that you were there. People arent interested in buying a dirty house, so its essential that the house be clean at all times for visitors. Initially, that means a deep clean of everything that you might have neglected over the years kitchen cabinets, baseboards, behind doors. When your home is on the market,

...Staging your home

From page 10
people could stop by at any time. Visitors will understand a few dirty dishes or an unmade bed, but it is best to keep any actual evidence of your existence as clean as possible. Many people decide to hire a cleaning company. You can do this for the initial clean or have a service come in every week to tidy things up for you, depending on what your budget will allow. Remove the clutter. If theres one thing a homebuyer wants, it is space to put their things. If the house is full of your stuff, it can be more difficult for buyers to envision themselves in the home. If you can move large pieces of furniture, perhaps ones you will be discarding anyway, youll create more space for buyers. In particular, you will want to remove items that might alienate large groups of buyers, including items of a political or religious nature. Buyers often connect emotionally with a home, and items like these might stop that emotional connection from happening. While you are removing the clutter, youll also want to get the right props. Mirrors can make rooms seem larger and increase the amount of available light. Plants can make a home seem warm and inviting. Professional stagers often use large bowls of fruit, colorfully arranged cookbooks in the kitchen and eye-catching wall sconces to add a touch of elegance and panache, making the home stand out from the others potential buyers have seen. Of course, professional stagers do exist, and you could certainly employ a company to help you, but you can do most of the work yourself in a few simple steps. Staging a home can interfere with your daily living, but, if you do it well, theres no reason why it should be an interference for very long.

West Bend resident honored with St. Josephs Hospital nursing award
Betty Matthies, RN, of West Bend, has been honored with the Excellence in Nursing Award from Froedtert Health St. Josephs Hospital. Registered nurses at St. Josephs nominate a bedside nurse for this annual award, based on excellence in their area of practice, quality care to patients and families, teamwork and leadership skills. Matthies, professional development coordinator in the hospitals New Life Center, has served at St. Josephs Hospital since 1992. She coordinates personal and professional growth opportunities for department staff by overseeing staff orientation, facilitating continuing education and competency testing, and acting as a clinical resource. She teaches childbirth preparation to pregnant women and their partners and coordinates the prenatal education program for the New Life Center. She is also a member of the hospitals Professional Practice Coordinating Council and the Unit-based Practice Council of the New Life Center. Throughout her 20-year career at St. Josephs Hospital she has been involved in and directed numerous changes and initiatives to help the care provided within the hospital system, said nominator Jen Harper, RN. She exudes passion for both her profession and patients. Frankly, I cannot believe she has not already won the Excellence in Nursing Award. She is an inspiration for our department, hospital and the nursing profession. All of our patients rave about her. Matthies expressed gratitude and humility upon receiving the award. Its an incredible honor to receive this award, considering all the excellent nurses we have here at St. Josephs, she said. "For me, this award celebrates the care all of our nurses provide everyday to our patients throughout the hospital. Matthies received her bachelors of science in nursing from Viterbo College. She resides in West Bend with her husband, Todd, and sons Sam, a college senior, and Marshall, a high school junior.
