Lenape High School senior
Nick Maricondi was recently pre-
sented with the Lenape Volunteer
Service Award.
According to Lenape High
School principal Tony Cattani,
there was never a doubt.
Nick is a wonderful young
man, Cattani said. He exempli-
fies what a student volunteer
should be.
Cattani presented Maricondi
the award by surprising him in
homeroom with balloons and the
certificate.
I cannot encapsulate all that
Nick has accomplished in his
time here, Cattani said.
Maricondi is an executive
board member of the student
council and through that has had
the opportunity to work on a lot
of different projects and
fundraisers. He has been key in
helping coordinate the two blood
drives Lenape hosts. A big focus
for him and the student council
has been helping freshmen adapt
to high school life.
We do tours for the incoming
freshmen. We try to spend time
with them so the transition is
easier, Maricondi said.
In addition to existing
fundraisers, Maricondi was
happy to bring back an event that
had not happened in awhile.
This year was the first time I
believe in seven years that we
held our version of the Wing
Bowl which I was excited about. I
competed as well, but didnt do
too hot, Maricondi said laugh-
ing. Despite not being a winner,
he said it was a tradition he
hopes continues. It was a lot of
fun and we had a good number of
students compete.
But there was one charity that
caught his eye even before he was
a Lenape student. Maricondis
older brother, Lou, a Lenape
graduate in 2010, had gone on
trips with the organization Give
Kids the World while in high
school. Nick wanted to do the
same once he got to Lenape.
I saw him go on this trip and
just thought what he did and
what they do as an organization
was so cool, Maricondi said. I
knew that when I got to Lenape I
would work to go on the trip, too.
Give Kids the World is a non-
profit organization based in
Kissimmee, Fla., that provides
trips for kids with life-threaten-
ing illnesses. Accommodations at

To date, GKTW has brought more
than 120,000 children and their
families to the resort for their
dream vacation.
While in Florida, Maricondi
and other students from Lenape
served breakfast and dinner to
the families at the GKTW resort.
In addition to serving meals, he
took pictures as well as some ar-
cade time with the kids.
Maricondi hopes to make it
back to the GKTW village but not
with a school; next time he hopes
it will be with his mom and dad.
Theyve paid for trips there
for my older brother and for me.
To get to go with them so they can
see it for themselves would be
awesome.
Maricondi plans to continue
volunteering while attending
Rider.
Im a big believer in giving

E
very four years, there is a big,
big election in New Jersey that
costs candidates lots and lots of
money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-
vertise hard and heavy throughout the
state, spending boatloads of cash in the
New York City and Philadelphia metro
markets.
This years election for Garden State
governor is extra special because the
incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought
to be a leading candidate for the Re-
public nomination for president in
2016.
Before that is a possibility, though,
he will have to beat his Democratic op-
ponent in New Jersey this November.
And, even before that, hell have to
defeat his Republican opposition for
the gubernatorial nomination, Seth
Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer
and political veteran.
While the focus of this election has
already been on Christie and top Dem-
ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both
must make it through next Tuesdays
Primary Election before they can com-
pletely turn their focus to Novembers
General Election.
Buono, a state senator from Newark
who has been representing the 18th
Legislative District since 2002, will
square off against Troy Webster, an
aide to the mayor of East Orange.
If Buono and Christie succeed next
week, as many expect, theyll officially
turn their focus on each other, letting
the money, and muckraking, fly.
Both parties have already begun tel-
evision ad campaigns, and the number
of ads and ferocity of the content will
surely pick up as Novembers election
approaches.
Its an unfortunate reality of cur-
rent-day electioneering, especially in
this state.
So expect your TV sets, your radios
and your newspapers to be filled with
political advertisements over the next
six months until an official governor is
named.
In the meantime, get out and vote in
the Primary Election next Tuesday,
June 4, if youre a registered Republi-
can or Democrat.
In addition to the gubernatorial elec-
tion, there are also elections for the
General Assembly, state Senate and
local governing bodies. This is your
first chance to let your voice be heard.
Campaign season has begun
With Primary Elections next week, let the advertising begin

Clothes dryers are responsible for an estimated 15,000
home fires in the U.S. annually, causing over $84 million in
property damage. The leading cause of the fires was lint
build-up in the exhaust system.
COITs Dryer Vent Cleaning will help reduce the lint build-
up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours

The Mt. Laurel Sun
Last year marked the begin-
ning of the Mt. Laurel School Dis-
tricts solar initiative, and it has
meant continued success and sav-
ings.
The district solar project was
approved by the Board of Educa-
tion in June 2012. The next four
months were spent accruing the
necessary permits to begin such a
project, with construction official-
ly beginning in October.
According to the BOE, the proj-
ect began at Hartford and Har-
rington schools. Seven hundred
thirteen solar panels were in-
stalled on the roof of Harrington
and by mid-December, the system
was fully functioning and opera-
tional. Not long after that, the in-
stallation of supports and panels
at the Hartford School began. An
in-ground mount system was
built and panels were placed both
on the ground as well as on the
roof of the school. The combined
energy generated between the two
buildings is estimated to be 470.12-
kilowatt hours.
For every megawatt-hour of
electricity produced by an eligible
solar facility, one Solar Renewable
Energy Certificate is awarded.
Solar requirements from the state
demand that energy suppliers or
utilities procure a percentage of
electricity from qualified solar re-
newable energy. Transfer of
SRECs to these suppliers results
in income for the producer, in this
case the school district.
After a month of online opera-
tion, the district received a check
for $42,084, representing the trans-
fer of its first SREC. A second
check received totaled $56,989.
In our case, this is not a profit
yet, said Assistant Superintend-
ent for Business Operations and
Board Secretary Robert Wachter
Jr. The income from the sale of
the SRECs will be used to pay off
the cost of our solar project first.
But at some point, this will be an
income source for our schools,
and at the same time it is greatly
reducing our carbon footprint.
The exact total cost of the proj-
ect was unavailable before this
story went to print. In addition to
the revenue being generated, the
project has given students the op-
portunity to learn first-hand
about their environment and the
carbon footprint generated by the
schools. Kiosks were placed in
each school to show the energy
level generated and the kilowatt-
hours being utilized in real time.
The Board of Education still
hopes to expand the initiative to
all the schools in the district that
are eligible. A study to determine
the ability of adding solar panels
to the remaining six schools in
Mt. Laurel is ongoing.
Mt. Laurel schools have had a
long history of energy conserva-
tion initiatives. Theyve installed
motion detectors and energy effi-
cient lighting in the schools com-
mon areas that allow the lights to
turn off automatically when the
space is not being used. They have
also participated in programs to
significantly lower gas emissions
from their school bus fleet.
