Burlington County College an-
nounced that its Diagnostic Med-
ical Sonography Program was re-
cently accredited by the Commis-
sion on Accreditation of Allied
Health Education Programs in
collaboration with the Joint Re-
view Committee Diagnostic
Medical Sonography.
After participating in a
voluntary self-study and a com-
prehensive on-site review with
one of the CAAHEPs Commit-
tees on Accreditation, it was de-
termined that BCC was in compli-
ance with the nationally recog-
nized standards for the profes-
sion.
The DMS program at BCC pre-
pares students for a career as a di-
agnostic medical sonography
technologist, also known as an ul-
trasound technologist. Working
under the guidance of a radiolo-
gist, an ultrasound technologist
uses state-of-the-art ultrasound
equipment to diagnose a variety
of diseases.
BCCs DMS program began in
2007 and in May 2009, the first
BCC DMS program majors gradu-
ated with their Associate of Ap-
plied Science degree.
The program consists of aca-
demic, laboratory, and clinical
components. The number of
available clinical sites limits en-
rollment for each class to 14 stu-
dents. For admission into the pro-
gram students must submit a

Rider University.
With aspirations of continuing
her career as a superintendent
again, Vespe first applied for the
position in January. She had a
prior relationship with current
interim superintendent Dolores
Szymanski and through conver-
sations with her was encouraged
to apply.
Dolores only had great things
to say about the district, Vespe
said. She said the community is
education-focused and heavily in-
volved in the betterment of their
schools. Clearly, thats an attrac-
tive situation to come into.
From the first interview, I was
impressed by the board, Vespe
said. Their passion, their in-
volvement, the initiatives they
had in place and ones they were
planning were just great.
She was officially approved as
the new superintendent April 9.
Vespe is still extremely busy with
graduation upcoming in just a
few weeks for Pemberton Town-
ship High School.
Vespe leaves behind an impres-
sive legacy at Pemberton. In fall
2012, New Jersey Magazine
named it one of the top 10 most
improved high schools in the
state.
That was definitely a proud
moment for me, Vespe said. The
entire community, parents, stu-
dents, teachers, worked very
hard, and it was definitely a
source of pride for all of us.
Having worked at both the high
school and middle school level ex-
tensively, Vespe mentioned she
had an attraction to the opportu-
nity because it would allow her to
oversee an elementary school en-
vironment.
Vespe couldnt think of any
specific concerns or apprehen-
sions she had about starting in a
new district.
I am most looking forward to
working with the staff in place to
discuss what initiatives are work-
ing well already as well as what
things we want to plan, Vespe
said.
After meeting with both Princi-
pal Tim Carroll at Indian Mills
Memorial School and Principal
Nicole Moore of Indian Mills Ele-
mentary, Vespe was excited to
work with them to learn what
problems they face and what can
be done to address them. Im
coming in with a very collabora-
tive mentality, Vespe said.
Vespe will officially finish at
Pemberton June 30 and begin
with Shamong on July 1. She will
be in attendance at Junes BOE
meeting, currently scheduled for
Tuesday, June 18.

Volunteering with two different chari-
ties, finishing her senior year strong, and
preparing to attend Johns Hopkins Univer-
sity in the fall are all part of just another
day in the life of Seneca High School sen-
ior Alexandra Potts. Because of her volun-
teer work, Potts was recently presented
with the Seneca Volunteer Service Award.
It is such an honor to receive the
award, Potts said. It was something I
wanted to achieve, and Im excited to have
done it.
As a freshman, Potts was looking to get
involved in different clubs within Seneca.
The community service club seemed to be
a perfect fit, as it would give her the oppor-
tunity to work with kids, which is some-
thing she is passionate about. Through the
club, Potts discovered the Florida-based
Give Kids the World foundation and was
blown away by the work it was doing.
Give Kids the World is a non-profit or-
ganization based in Kissimmee, Fla., that
provides trips for kids with life-threaten-
ing illnesses. Accommodations at the Give
Kids the World village, meals, as well as ad-
mission tickets to Walt Disney World, Uni-
versal Studios and other attractions are
given to families for the week. To date, the
organization has brought more than
120,000 children and their families to the
resort for their dream vacation.
How many people this organization has
touched, how many people have been
helped, is incredible, and I wanted to be a
part of that, Potts said.
As a sophomore and again this year,
Potts traveled to Florida for four days and
had the opportunity to meet some of the
children and their families.
When you see the kids smile or their
face light up, it just makes your entire day,
Potts said.
In addition to her work with GKTW,
Potts has been volunteering with the
Voorhees Pediatric Facility for the last
year. Established in 1982, it is a nationally
recognized specialty care center for med-
ically at-risk children.
Since Alexa started here in May of
2012, Ive always been impressed with her
maturity and her patience, volunteer
manager Rose Lynch said. So many times
Ive seen her. Shes kneeling on the ground

very four years, there is a big,
big election in New Jersey that
costs candidates lots and lots of
money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-
vertise hard and heavy throughout the
state, spending boatloads of cash in the
New York City and Philadelphia metro
markets.
This years election for Garden State
governor is extra special because the
incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought
to be a leading candidate for the Re-
public nomination for president in
2016.
Before that is a possibility, though,
he will have to beat his Democratic op-
ponent in New Jersey this November.
And, even before that, hell have to
defeat his Republican opposition for
the gubernatorial nomination, Seth
Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer
and political veteran.
While the focus of this election has
already been on Christie and top Dem-
ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both
must make it through next Tuesdays
Primary Election before they can com-
pletely turn their focus to Novembers
General Election.
Buono, a state senator from Newark
who has been representing the 18th
Legislative District since 2002, will
square off against Troy Webster, an
aide to the mayor of East Orange.
If Buono and Christie succeed next
week, as many expect, theyll officially
turn their focus on each other, letting
the money, and muckraking, fly.
Both parties have already begun tel-
evision ad campaigns, and the number
of ads and ferocity of the content will
surely pick up as Novembers election
approaches.
Its an unfortunate reality of cur-
rent-day electioneering, especially in
this state.
So expect your TV sets, your radios
and your newspapers to be filled with
political advertisements over the next
six months until an official governor is
named.
In the meantime, get out and vote in
the Primary Election next Tuesday,
June 4, if youre a registered Republi-
can or Democrat.
In addition to the gubernatorial elec-
tion, there are also elections for the
General Assembly, state Senate and
local governing bodies. This is your
first chance to let your voice be heard.
Campaign season has begun

According to Lynch, Potts has
volunteered 92 hours since she
started. She works as a recreation
volunteer, visiting children inde-
pendently and spending time
with them.
She is an asset to our
volunteer community, Lynch
said.
Another project Potts worked
on was Senecas annual character
breakfast. Families from the com-
munity are invited to the school
to have a pancake breakfast made
by students while others dress up
as favorite Disney characters to
take pictures with the kids in at-
tendance.
Our Mickey Mouse pancakes
definitely looked like blobs to
start but we got the hang of it
eventually, Potts said.
With graduation only a few
weeks away, Potts has no plans to
stop her volunteer work. Shell
continue to be at VPF over the
summer, and her hope is to start a
group at Johns Hopkins that also
helps raise funds for Give Kids
the World.

agreement for their latest green
degrees.
Last fall, both colleges
launched degree programs in the
growing field of sustainability.
The agreement, signed at
Stocktons Board of Trustees
meeting in February, will allow
BCC students studying sustain-
ability to seamlessly transfer into
Stocktons program after earning
their associates degree.
Students who meet the neces-
sary requirements for the degree
program will enter into Stockton
College with junior status and be
able to graduate with a bachelors
degree within two years.
This agreement affords BCC
students studying sustainability
the very important opportunity
to continue to pursue a bachelor's
degree in this field, BCC Presi-
dent David C. Hespe said.
BCC is the first two-year col-
lege in the tri-county area to offer
comprehensive green associates
degree programs. With support
from a NASA grant, BCC created
the Center for Sustainability and
Alternative Energy and is now of-
fering four green degree pro-
grams: Associate of Science in
Sustainability Policy & Manage-
ment, Associate of Applied Sci-
ence in Energy Management, As-
sociate of Applied Science in Al-
ternative Energy Technologies,
and Associate of Science in Sus-
tainable Energy Studies. The As-
sociate of Science degrees are
specifically designed to transfer
into four-year institutions.
In the fall of 2012, the first
Stockton students enrolled in our
sustainability program, which is
Stocktons newest undergraduate
degree program, and just one
year later, we are proud to be
clearing the pathway to bring
Burlington County College stu-
dents in, Stockton President
Herman J. Saatkamp said.
To qualify for acceptance, BCC
students must earn a cumulative
grade point average of 3.0 and de-
clare their intention to enroll in
the GAP program before complet-
ing 30 credits at BCC.
Stockton Colleges sustainabili-
ty program integrates the natural
sciences, technology, economics,
policy, ethics and other fields. En-
hancing sustainability education
is a core component in Stocktons
2020 Strategic Plan.
BCC and Stockton College have
GAP agreements in more than 40
majors covering everything from
history and literature to econom-
ics and public health.

BCCs Center for Sustainability
and Alternative Energy, please
