13 A strong area of focus in my practice is the application of my image based work. I am interested in the use of image to both communicate and decorate, and my research has highlighted the many ways in which this is possible. The ways in which designers approach this is varied, and depends upon the context of each different brief. Some products require more of a literal visual translation of their contents, where other areas, the beauty sector in particular, allow for much more absrtact, decorative imagery. Environmental graphics provide another platform for the application of image, again this can be informative or purely decorative.

The greetings and gifting industry is an area I see myself progressing towards in my future practice. This design sector relies heavily on the development and application of image based work, and would allow me to continue to develop work that I love making. My placement at Tigerprint was particularly informative, the work environment was highly creative, and individuals were encouraged to develop and push their own creative ideas and ambitions. My research has informed me that there are various ways into this industry, numerous independent suppliers as well as the big firms. The most important aspect however is the variation in design approach, the products within this industry are marketed at a wide audience, so there are numerous sub-sectors and niche areas of the market to exploit. 12

One area of design I am particularly interested in is design for children. It is such a vast audience sector, and there is the opportunity within it to use a range of image making approaches and styles. There is also a huge range of possible applications in this sector, from packaging and specific products to illustrations, book covers and surface pattern. 16

While i am interested in both design for screen and print, i am particularly interested in specialist print methods and the manipulation of paper to create designs. My research, inclusing talks with large scale printers, has given me much further knowledge of the possibilites, and limitations of using print based methods. I have also learnt a lot about the properties of paper, and what is possible to die cut on a commercial scale.
