Jeff Deahl, President Four Seasons Design & Remodeling

From the President of the Board

I am writing this on the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day, April 22. We have been hearing over and over again about building Green. Todays homeowners are asking for green building products and reductions in carbon footprints. Realtors are wondering how they can best sell green homes and their products. Other hot topics include energy efficiency, water conservation and indoor air quality. What does this really mean to us in our industry? In the late 70s and early 80s I was big into Earth Day. We built solar homes and solar systems, even several underground houses. That was Earth Day then. Now, we talk of ground source heat pumps, solar thermal, biomass and waste heat recovery and ecofriendly projects. After all, I started as a carpenter some 30 years ago, and Im not too good with big words. What does building Green really mean? According to the AIA [American Institute of Architects] and COTE [Committee on the Environment], projects including new construction (both residential and commercial) and remodeling - which is dollar-wise the largest construction segment in the country - and also land use strategies can all incorporate green techniques. Structures that are integrated into natural systems and technologies that provide solutions which protect and enhance the environment. Wow, do I know anything more now after reading that? Well yes, if you think about what its really saying... Building green means efficient use of water, energy and other resources, protecting occupant health and reducing waste and pollution. We need to consider the future when we build, add on, or develop. We need to understand that much of what we build is going to be around long after us, and we need to think about what its long term impact is. So lets all continue to increase our awareness of how we are currently affecting the futures of our kids and grandkids. Everybody come out to the Remodelers Tour on May 4 from 10-5. My project in Ashley will have homeowner made wine tasting! Also remember, the May meeting will be the last meeting until September. We will have 4 County Vocational Speaking and we will be awarding the senior students. They are our next generation of contractors, please attend to show them your support. Dont forget the golf outing June 12 at Zollner, contact Chris or Jan for additional information.

Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards

What QABS means for you, the consumer: The Indiana Quality Assurance Standards provide new homebuyers and remodeling customers a way to measure their builder and the project against an industry approved set of standards. These Standards create a series of performance standards builders and customers can use to communicate and understand each other's expectations regarding building/remodeling projects. The Standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the project, during the project, and most importantly, after the project is completed. All too often it is the unrealized or undiscovered expectations that create the majority of problems encountered in the building/remodeling process. The Standards will help eliminate these problems before the project even begins. What QABS means for you, the builder: One objective of the Association is to improve the community image of the industry. Towards that objective, the builders association offers you the Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards. The program includes a set of standards, recommended language for including the standards and mediation/binding arbitration of the standards into project contracts, and marketing information. The Standards create reasonable customer expectations regarding the building/remodeling process, and address the most prevalent issues that arise before the project, during the project, and, most importantly, after the projected is completed. The Standards eliminate the unrealized and undisclosed expectations of the customer by giving the builder/remodeler a tool to discuss, identify, and set the customer's expectations before problems arise. Yet, disputes will inevitably arise that cannot be settled between the two parties using the Standards. With that in mind, the Standards also includes a mediation/binding arbitration mechanism to provide another vehicle to dispute resolution outside the costly and time-consuming court process. Let the consumer know you are a part of the network of quality builders. Include the Indiana Quality Assurance Builder logo in print, television and radio advertising, and promote your membership with the association in press releases and brochures.
