Road repair work for Thomas Drive will soon be underway after council approved a budget that will see the road repaired from Park Lane Drive to Brent Blvd. Town administration called a special council meeting on May 22 to discuss the project, and to see a motion made. The project had been divided into two packages, A and B. Package A consists of all work recommended from Park Lane Drive to Brentwood Drive. Package B is for all of the work north of Brentwood Drive to Brent Blvd. The project had been divided because the scope of work outlined in the capital project budget was based on all work leading to Brentwood Drive, and if the tenders were to come in under budget, or if council chose to repave the entirety of Thomas Drive, the numbers would be there in package B to show the additional cost. Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the town said that a previous road assessment program had identified that the section south from Brentwood Drive to Centennial Drive would be a structural overlay, and then south of Centennial Drive to Park Lane Drive has underground replacements that need to be done. The section north of Brentwood Drive was identified at that time as not being in need of immediate repair, but does have some work that would need to be done in the future. The original budget was for $3 million, which would see package A completed; however, to complete work on both package A and B the cost would raise to $3,573,676.70. Based on the approved budget package A can be completed within budget for whats been tendered. As a result the recommendation this evening is with that ($3 million) being an approved budget that we do package A, said Parker. I indicated to council that we do have pricing that is fairly reasonable for continuing the project into package B and continuing the project for all of Thomas Drive north of Brentwood Drive should council desire to continue with the project beyond Brentwood Drive. Water, water everywhere!
Heather Roberts CAIB, CPIB, CSP
Its that time of year again. When walking the dog at Kinsmen Lake you stick to the path as the grass is squishy with moisture. The farmers fields have standing water in the low-lying areas. The farmers call this a million dollar rain. Too much water can cause problems. Do you have the right coverage? What can you claim? Who do you call when things go wrong? Call Action Insurance Group for answers. Were here to help.

Gariepy, challenged the graduates to remember where you come from and be proud of that. She recalled jokingly about her adventures in travelling with the Stampede that the best part about growing up and perhaps, moving away, going to university or travelling is that you will always win the my town was the smallest competition. Her final comments were poignant in that she challenged the graduates to: take opportunities, be open minded, be light hearted, work hard, take advantage of home cooked meals, tell your parents you love them, and have fun. Students from the graduating class of 2013 represented the communities of Gleichen, Hussar, Rockyford, Rosebud, and of course Standard.
Road repair a go
Continued from Page 1 I have waited approximately seven years to have this finally come before us again to get it finished. I think we would be very remiss if we did not do packages A and B together on this. To do part of it is just doing an injustice to our ratepayers, said Councillor Earl Best. A motion was made to award the contract to North Star Contracting to complete both package A and B, for a total not to exceed $3,573,676.70. Work will begin on Thomas Drive this week and is to be completed by July 31.

servants to this community, this county, this country and we cannot forget that. That is our existence. I want to offer this evening as a symbol of that service to you. The Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society were the beneficiaries of the event and they are the ones who are there to help when there has been a crime or a tragedy that has left someone with their world shattered. They are the ones who comfort victims of sexual assault, and who accompany the RCMP when they must notify next-ofkin of an untimely or sudden death. The Gleichen Community Ladies provided a fantastic meal for the event while the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Strathmore 903 Squadron served the meal. Live entertainment was provided by Larry Vannatta and his band. It was an evening of fine dining, live auction, dancing and live music and most importantly getting to know the men and women behind the uniforms. McLarens commitment rang loud and clear in his comments to the community members, Thank you all for coming out and supporting us. You are the silent majority who I know have our backs when we are conducting our duties. I ask that you share the rich history of this community and get to know the person behind the serge who is sitting with you. Tell some stories and ask for some stories. Lord of All Lutheran blesses the bikes as kids head off for summer
Pastor Dawn Nelson and the Council at Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore are always thinking outside the box. Kids and adults alike brought their bikes to church on Sunday and had them blessed for safety for the coming summer months. Everyone received a sticker on their bike to remind them that God is with them when they ride and then the children received bells and reflectors from the Church to put on their bikes.

time to remove him from the cab, because the ambulance and a crane had to be brought to the wreck, and it was discovered hed broken his back! When he had recovered from this injury, Workmans compensation sent him to SAIT in 1975 where he was trained as an Oil and Gas Draftsman, also known as a Process Piping and Design Draftsman. He worked in this position for the next 32 years, before retiring in 2009. In 1975, he married Bea Primrose, who had three children from a previous marriage. These three children have given them six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Unfortunately, Bea passed away from cancer in 2003. Bea had a girlfriend named Lillian McIntyre, known as Lil, for years and years, even before she knew Jim. Lil was a companion to Bea during her terminal illness, and was with her up to the time of her death. As a trained Home Care worker, she was able to get a job here in Strathmore, and now lives with Jim. Jim works as a volunteer at Strathmore Heritage Days, and is a member of The Legion. When he came to Strathmore in 1968, the population was 1,200! Hes concerned at the number of businesses moving from downtown to be closer to the highway, and the arrival of all the big box stores. What will these businesses do, if/when the TransCanada is moved south to bypass our town?
Jims great, great grandfather moved from Ireland to Fitzroy Harbour, Ont. around 1840. Later that year he was married, and they had four children. In 1881, Jims grandfather moved from Ontario to Minto, Man. where he obtained his quarter section of unimproved land from the CPR and Government of Upper Canada. He married in 1896, and produced eight children. One of those was Jims father. Jim was born in 1944 at the hospital in Boissevain, Man., a little town 40 miles south of Brandon. He grew up on the family farm, which was still in Minto, 14 miles north of Boissevain. He left school at the age of 17, and commenced work as a Section Man with Canadian National Railway, where he spent the next couple of years. From here, he joined the Manitoba Department of Highways as a surveyor. He moved to Alberta in 1967, hoping to continue work as a surveyor, but this was not to be. There were no openings for anyone with that training here. So, he worked as a labourer in various jobs until 1974, when he was hired as a propane truck driver, delivering propane around what is now known as Wheatland County. In August 1974, he was heading for Hussar, when he hit a patch of oil on the road, lost control of the truck, and ended up in a field trapped in the cab, which was on its side. It took a considerable amount of
When you burn your skin, the damage continues to occur until you can cool down the area of the burn. Best advice is to immerse the burned area in cold water (no ice) for at least 15 minutes. Youll find this reduces the pain as well. People looking for an alternative to DEET as an insect repellant might look for products containing icaridin. It is effective against mosquitoes, black flies and ticks and is available as a pump spray, aerosol spray and towelettes. It is safe for adults and children over the age of 6 months. Examples of brands containing this include Deep Woods and Avon. Looking for a good source of calcium in food. Try sardines. Two ounces of this little fish provides 240mg of calcium because you are eating the fine bones of the fish. Sardines also contain significant amounts of vitamins D and B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids. Expiry dates on medication have a little leeway. They dont lose all their potency on the day of expiration. But theres one medication you want to be sure is in date and that is your EpiPen. The EpiPen is kept on hand by people with very serious allergies and can save lives. If you have an EpiPen, check the date. If its close to expiration, get a new one. If you have any questions about the EpiPen or other medications used to treat allergies, talk to our pharmacists. Wed be happy to share our knowledge.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the Town Linda Nelson addresses an audience filled with stakeholders , business and building owners on May 23 at the Legion. The overlay overview presented possible concepts for the downtown makeover that will go into a downtown overlay or revitalization bylaw. The Town is looking for input on the suggestions before the bylaw is put in place at the end of the summer.

these projects. Business owners have some concerns about the project. They voiced that there was an expectation of investment from businesses, but the Towns commitment was unclear. It was indicated that the Town would be responsible for the infrastructure development in the area. Any other contributions or commitments have not been determined. The overlay does not include any research or documentation, regarding why people are not currently patronizing the downtown, or types of businesses or activities that would bring businesses to the area. This is step one, just an initial small step in us moving forward. I just want to see us moving forward. The reason why we went to consultations, we prefer to have people tell us and give us ideas, said Sobol. I would really like to get across that this council is trying, we know that it is a problem. The town needs to come together and listen to you business owners, said Councillor Pat Fule. The overlay is a way to come together with some ideas of what we want to see. Fule said the bylaw might be written so it allowed greater population density in the downtown and vertical expansions over businesses, but qualified that safety concerns and structural integrity would have to be considered for all building modifications.
We need to find a way for people to live downtown and work downtown .We need to incorporate unique ideas. We have lost bigger businesses from the downtown and I am worried that there are more to follow, said Fule. Councillor Rocky Blokland is a business man in the downtown. He indicated that all small towns go through cycles of high and low business activity. Its a very good meeting here today with lots of ideas. Downtown is the heart and soul of small town Alberta. This Town Council is committed as a group to improving the town. The overlay is just a part of the whole big picture, said Blokland. Fule said that the Town is currently looking at paving the pathway in Kinsmen Park to make it more accessible year round and may consider moving the Town offices downtown in the future. He said they were open to hearing revitalization ideas from the public. Those in attendance were given surveys and questionnaires, to gather more information. They wanted volunteers for a working group to work on the overlay process. Nelson said meeting dates and the working outline for the group would be determined later. Interested parties can sign up to participate in the working group or get a survey, by contacting the Town of Strathmore office at 403 934-3133, or contact Nelson at, LindaN@strathmore.ca.

the Childrens Hospital you are supporting family centered child health programs, specialized life-saving equipment and advanced pediatric research. The majority of people you talk to know someone who has benefitted from this amazing hospital in either a small way or a very big way. Kylee and her 4-H club are hoping that people open up their hearts and donate to a great cause such as the Alberta Childrens Hospital. If more information is required please call 403901-5756. On June 2 at the Calgary Stampede Grounds the charity lamb will be on the auction block.
Kirstyn Johnson, 17, has made it into the Top 3 of the MuchMusic and Coca Cola Covers Competition. On June 16 the winner will be announced at the MMVAs.
Melissa David and her brother Raymond David, new co-owners of Daisy Recycling, would like to introduce themselves to all present and future clients.

and decide how I was going to approach it, how produced I was going to make it, if I was going to add different tracks or if I was going to strip it down and just do a funky piano sound and a vocal. I ended up just doing the piano sound and a vocal because I thought that it might be different from what everyone else was doing, because I had seen a lot of acoustic guitar covers and stuff like that. I wanted to ensure that I was going to be a little bit different from what everyone else was doing. Johnson has been working on releasing her EP, though, for now, that is on hold while she focuses on the competition. She has gained a lot of fans from being involved in the competition and she is excited to share her progress with them and future fans. If the opportunity arises to further pursue her musical career she would, even if it means home schooling until completing high school. Johnson, and her fellow Top 3 finalists, have won a VIP trip to the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards on June 16 in Toronto, and their own 30-second commercial. The winner of the competition will be announced at the awards. Johnson would love to win, but for her the biggest goal she has right now is getting her name out there and being seen by the public. Either way Im not going to stop, Im always going to put something out no matter what happens or how this competition unfolds, theres no doubt in my mind something will be out with my name on it, said Johnson. From now until June 16 fans can view and rate Johnson for a chance at the top spot by going to www.muchmusic.com/covers.

in terms of our expectation and the application rate and the thickness of which the line paint is to be applied, said Parker. Well have a sample area established in which that will be our expectation for what the line paint application rate and thickness will be, and well use that as a reference or the review as we go through the areas. As the roads are being painted the Town and contractor, to ensure both parties are in agreement of the quality, will review them. Parker said he had phoned the second bid contractor as well. They do not have a lot of municipal experience and dont quite have the equipment needed to do the scope of work. He is hoping by having a test area with Line West it will help resolve past issues. Councillor Bob Sobol raised the question of why the tenders arent put out to the public earlier in the year. Giving these companies a little more time and giving us the opportunity to say no to a tender is a powerful tool I think. Were sort of stuckits very hard to say no at this point. We can say no but we wont have line painting until September then, said Sobol. Volker Stevin does the line painting work on the highways. Currently Parker is looking into the possibility of the Town purchasing its own line paint equipment to do the follow behind and crosswalk, stop bars and parking lines. He then hopes to talk to Volker Stevin about having them paint the centre lines and the lane lines which would see a reduction in the costs to the town. Council awarded the 2013 line-painting contract to Line West.

County dedication
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor On May 21, Wheatland County Council stepped out to dedicate the Centennial Park project at the County office, as well as the historic Caterpillar elevating grader that has been a focal point for the County office access road. Dignitaries present at the ceremony were past and present council members, county staff, and donation patron Blaine Evans. The dedication was open to the public. An accumulation of events and efforts by past and present Wheatland Council and staff have led to the development and completion of this project. It started in 2005, and the plaques honour those involved and our road and construction crews, said Reeve Glenn Koester. Koester said grants were secured to beautify the front entrance with a flower garden and seating area for waiting ratepayers. The name of the park is derived from Albertas 100th Centennial celebration and the Countys 50th anniversary that occurred in 2005. The No. 42 elevator grader had been donated to the County by the Evans family. Cam Evans originally purchased it for use in his Gleichen Construction company. Evans constructed roads in the Gleichen, Siksika, and Arrowwood area. In 1939, the machine sold for $5,300. An important selling feature was that it had its own 40 horsepower engine, or could be driven with a power take-off in tow of another tractor. It had an operating weight of 16,630 pounds. The equipment was made from 1935
Ribbon cutting ceremonies at the Wheatland County Office for the dedication of Centennial Park and the No. 42 Caterpillar elevator grader plaques were held on May 21. Past and present councillors and staff were on hand, along with special guest Blaine Evans (kneeling first on left).
until 1942, when it was phased out of production. The Evans family donated the grader to the County in 2006, where it was restored to non-operable condition and strategically placed so Wheatland County ratepayers, residents and tourists could enjoy a historical reminder of road construction long past.
Blaine Evans said that his father would have been happy to see the grader preserved. He had memories of standing on top of the machine and operating it at the early age of 14. He felt that it was important to remember our rural heritage and provide learning opportunities for new generations as well.

1 5 - y e a r- o l d Sarah Lecavalier has been invited to tryout for Albertas U18 team. Previously, she tied for the leagues top scorer in Bantam Boys AA, as part of the Wheatland Warriors.
sports
Jordann Mackay (l) is presented with a cheque from TransCanadas Shari Geisel for her career in gymnastics on behalf of the Alberta Sports, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Mackay finished with bronze at the 2010 Alberta Winter Games, and won eighth overall at this years provincials. The grant will cover her fees and costs for 2013.
AA team this past year, the Wheatland Warriors, where she tied for top scorer in the league. They were a great groupweve kind of had a relationship like no other team would have, she said. Moving to playing with girls is a big change for Lecavalier, who has been playing with boys since she was fiveyears-old. Its a really different game. The boys its like dump and chase, youre on them, and you have support. But with girls, its all about control and positioning. Like, its much smarter, Lecavalier said. You have to think about everything youre doing. Team Alberta Girls scouts typically would never recruit from boys leagues; they would have missed out on her tremendous skill. If Sarah fails to make U18, she knows at least a spot is saved for her on U16 though skipping that initial step would be supremely beneficial to building her game. Lecavalier feels her work along the boards, her shot, and her speed bring up her confidence on the ice but she still needs to get to know (the other) girls games more for sure; they have a lot of different systems. As an underage player in the U18 division, this process is all new for the Lecavalier family. When playing with boys, we play during the year, we have spring off, she does lacrosse, we have summer off, we train, and then we go back on the ice. So this whole thing with the U16, and the U18, and Team Alberta, I have no clue what happens, Nelia said. Sarah may have to move from home, or study on her own with the team. The 15-year-old says shes ready. I didnt really get opportunities like this, just playing with boys, Lecavalier said. But its pretty exciting.

SHS and Holy Cross shine at Wheatland Countys Track and Field
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Each year with students graduating, the loss of skills and experience leave teams to look towards the younger students to step up and fill shoes. Strathmore High and Holy Cross Collegiate should have no problem doing so, as both their Jr. Girls and Jr. Boys teams displayed great results at the Countys Track and Field Meet on May 22. Strathmore Highs Kyle Foster came first in the 100m dash, the 400m dash, and the 3000m dash, followed closely by teammate Grady White who finished second in the 100m, but first in the 200m. 15-year-old White also took first in long jump. Josh Hauck of Holy Cross finished first in triple jump, and took second in both long jump and high jump. Christopher OLeary, a fellow Hawk, had the best results in shot put and discus. On the girls side, Karly Larson of SHS finished first in high jump, the 400m, and the 800m. From Holy Cross, Alicia Magwood took first in triple jump and long jump. Both schools hold great depth for upcoming years. But as for 2013, look for 18-year-old Will Kemp of Strathmore High to stand out at Zones; he finished first in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000m. Similarly, SHS Sr. Jessica Murphy came first in three events as well: 100m, hurdles, and high jump. Zones will take place at Foothills Park on May 28, followed by Provincials (also at Foothills) June 7-8.

The little-old-lady costumes and familiar tunes used by all Granny groups are disarming for those who generally think activists are awful, but the Grannies in-your-face style and the satirical bite of many of their songs challenge the stereotype of older women as boring and irrelevant.
