Character Education:
During the month of May we spent time talking about Flexibility. Being Flexible involves accepting change and trying new things. Were proud of Emilee and Isaac, our May Student-of-the-Month winners who tied for the win! During the month of June we will be looking at all of the keys and deciding on our Code of Conduct award winner at the end of the month. Our Code of Conduct award will be presented at our grade 6 graduation on June 28th.

Jump Rope for Heart Update:

The cold weather on May 24th and the rain on May 28th have cancelled our scheduled (and rescheduled) Jump Rope for Heart event. Students will have an opportunity to participate in the activities during their physical education and DPA activities classes over the next few weeks instead. Our class raised over $400 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! Thats pretty amazing for a class of 6!

Play Day :
On Friday, June 7th the junior students will be hosting Ryersons annual Play Day event! Remember to come to school prepared to be outside participating in the activities. Comfy footwear, a hat, sunscreen, a labeled water bottle, and loose clothing are strongly recommended for students to participate comfortably on event day.

Imagine a Show: WRDSB Photo Update:

We enjoyed traveling back to Conestoga Mall to view our photos in the WRDSBs Imagine a Show photography display. It was pretty special seeing our photographs enlarged, printed, and displayed among the images submitted by talented students across the region. We overheard mall shoppers comment on how professional the images looked and how they couldnt believe students took these shots! The Gill-Villeans should be very proud of their contributions, as each student in our class had at least two photos that were accepted for the main display and published photo book. We will purchase a copy of the book to display in our class. You can also purchase your own copy of the book (with your childs published prints included) for $25. The books can be ordered online at http://imagineashow.com or from Conestoga Mall on the weekends.

105theHive Radio:
We were very proud of ourselves for our amazing first broadcast on the Internet radio station, 105theHive! We used a loud, clear voice to share our learning about our habitat projects. We had some classes tuning in here at Ryerson and a teacher from Belleville also messaged us with compliments on our broadcast. Our second broadcast involved introducing our Kindergarten buddies as they showed off their new reading skills. They were amazing! During our third broadcast we shared our awesome adventure stories. The students worked hard to engage our listeners using vocal effects. During each of our broadcasts, some students manage our Twitter feed and reply to tweets mentioning us and/or the #radio4learning broadcast. Our fourth broadcast was cancelled due to the cancellation of our Jump Rope for Heart event where we were going to interview students during the event. We also did a short broadcast from the Imagine a Show trip to discuss the photos in the show.

IPRC Meetings:
Just a reminder to our graduating students, that IPRC meetings will take place on June 11th and 13th. Students remaining in our program for one more year will receive a waiver form. Please sign and return those forms as soon as possible.

Artist Studies:
We have been learning about some new art techniques when looking at the works of famous artists Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Georges Seurat.

We made some gorgeous watercolour paintings of Monets lilies that you may have seen on your Mothers Day cards. We also experimented with colour mixing when using our thumbprints to make our own version of Monets Japanese bridge. When appreciating Van Goghs Starry Night painting, we noticed how he used lines to create the illusion of movement. Our scratch-resist paintings of this masterpiece look amazing and became one of our favourite art projects for this year!

We explored pointillism and created our own images using a series of dots to create a larger image. We have enjoyed learning about these famous artists and look forward to learning about a few more in June. Stay tuned for our creative work that we will be making this month when we study artists Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dali, and Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol. In June, we will host a mini art gallery show for other students to view our work! Also, remember you can see our art projects that we post on the Global Art Show wiki:

Picture It Update:
We are still waiting for a few pieces of our art puzzle to arrive. Here is our current display:

Little Chefs:
We will participate in our final Little Chefs class on Monday, June 3rd. This will be the last time our class will receive this program and we are thankful we were able to work out a few more sessions. We hope you have enjoyed the meals your child has brought home from the program this year.

Teapot Project:
We received a package from a grade 6 class in Ancaster. Inside, was a teapot and 2 mugs that the class decorated. The class was challenged to design, make, and pack their own box that would get the items to us safely. We were pleased to report to the class that this design worked. We wanted to try the activity so we made our own boxes and have sent the items back to their home school. We are eagerly waiting to see if they arrive intact! We are also waiting to receive another teapot project from a class in Wisconsin, USA that is also participating in this math challenge. You can follow the conversation on twitter by reading the #teapot6bd hashtag.

ESQ Family Night:

On Thursday, June 13th Ryerson will be hosting a family science event in partnership with the Engineering Department of the University of Waterloo. Families can attend and participate in a variety of science themed activities between 6:00-8:00. Look for more information coming home about this event.

Grade 6 Graduation:
Our grade 6 graduation will take place at 10:00 on Wednesday, June 26th. We have 3 students moving on this year and we wish them all the best in grade 7!
