Some students in the YPAS Orchestra took their own shot at composing pieces for their peers, including Meredith Robrahn (10). Robrahn had originally wanted to compose her own jingle, but

Coming together outside of the stage, orchestra students share traditions that bring them closer. Words by Clara Lewis, Danielle Hampton & Emily McConville Design by Rebecca Woodburn
Mr. Jason Seber (Orchestra). The hardest part was actually realizing how much work there would be, and making sure the players could actually do it, Robrahn said. Her classmates were able to successfully perform her piece. I thought it was a cheesy movie, but the soundtrack was exciting, she said. Photo by Patrick Haertel

Two hours before their November concert, Blythe Magnuson (12) and Jacob Speelman (12) packed as many orchestra members into their cars as possible. After arriving at TGIFridays on Fourth Street for their traditional pre-concert dinner, they pushed four tables together to accommodate a couple dozen people. The members talked, laughed, and enjoyed the meal before their performancea player tradition.

elephant gift exchange, in which members gave each other inexpensive, funny Christmas gifts. It made for more cohesion on and off the stage. A lot of us are shy outside of orchestra, especially myself, Hannah Soren (12) said, but I think a lot of us have come out of our shell through traditions like this. It didnt matter that the traditions had little to do with studying music. If people are nervous, its a good time to relax before we play, Speelman said. The best mindset for going on stage to perform a concert is a relaxed, concentrated one.

Harmonized with different instruments, the orchestra comes together to perform.
When I practice my violin, my neck runs against the chin rest. I always get a violin hickey and people always ask: What is that? Chandler Martin (11)

Cello
When I play the cello, its smooth and rich and can be played with conviction, assertion, and warmth. The cello takes on the form of the players emotions.

After transferring from Louisville Male High School to the YPAS Orchestra, Avery Holland (10) had to adjust to the change in demand from her orchestra classes. YPASs main purpose is to prepare you for the career. Its not like that at Male, Holland said. Once you put work into it though, you get results.
Allison Pecaro (11)

Where she once practiced an hour a week, Holland soon practiced over two hours per day at Manual. Its about motivation. The first chair violins are all seniors that are used to rigorous work, she said. They give me the motivation to work harder and get to that level.

Bass
I really love the bass because of how low it is and how rich the sound is. It is what chocolate would sound like if it had a sound. Alyson Clark (11)

Viola
When I was little, I thought the violin sounded too high and screechy, so I decided to play the viola. Allison Pecaro (11)

We dont focus on the audience or else well get nervous. All we need to care about is playing our best.
