Publishers Note
In Scots law, trout-fishing rights are inseparable
from the land upon which the loch or river lies.
These rights, unlike salmon-fishing rights, cannot
be sold separately from the land.
All fishing in Scotland is, therefore, the legal
property of riparian owners and, as such, all
fishing in Scotland is private. You will be
committing either a civil or criminal offence if
you so much as wet a line without permission to
do so from the relevant fishery owner.
The publisher and the author, and all others
associated with the production of this book, have
made every effort to ensure that the content of this
book is accurate at the time of going to press.
They have, in so far as they have been reasonably
able to do so, invited comment and correction of
the text from bodies such as local angling clubs
and fishery owners.
An entry in this book does not imply in any
way that the owner of the fishing described in that
entry will either give, or refuse to give, members
of the public a right to fish in the waters described
in that entry. The right of fishing remains solely

OS Map reference numbers are used to pinpoint locations. If you are not familiar with the
convention of grid references, this is how they
work. Take, for example, Sandavat, Loch
(Brenish) on the Isle of Lewis at grid reference
13/006270. This is on OS Map 13 (the first
numerals). After the diagonal slash, the first three
numerals (006) indicate the horizontal scale on
the map, and the following three numerals (270)
indicate the vertical scale. By following the lines
of these two axes to their meeting point you will
be able to locate the water in question.
If there is a name in brackets after the water
name (in this case Brenish) this is to distinguish
it from another loch with an identical name. In
this instance, for example, there is another Loch
Sandavat just two miles to the north.

Swankie, (1/331868) is next. After Maadle Swankie, go
north-west to the unnamed lochan at 1/323875, known
locally as The Loch of the Grey Ewe. Birka Water, one
of the most beautiful lochs in Shetland, is ten minutes
further west. The exit stream from Birka Water flows

Brough, accessible from a track near the post office
in the village which leads to the north end of the
loch.
Commentary 80 acres, shallow and easily accessible.
Fish Brown trout which average 8oz along with a number
of fish of up to and over 2lb in weight.
Flies & Tactics Boat fishing brings best results and a boat
might be available from the angling association.
Otherwise bank fishing. The south shore is most
productive. If things are quiet, walk over to have a cast
in the small lochans to the south, at 2/557635 and
2/563635. Flies: Loch Ordie, Woodcock & Hare-lug,
Peter Ross.
Permission See Loch of Huxter.
HUXTER, Loch
Location & Access 2/559622. Drive anticlockwise round
the island to find the Huxter to the east of the road, one
mile from the Symbister Harbour.
Commentary The most productive loch on Whalsay
covering an area of 80 acres. Loch of Livister
(2/559630), a smaller neighbour, is a few minutes
walk to the north, on the other side of the road.
Fish The largest trout taken in recent years weighed 9lb
4oz, although the average size is in the region of 8oz.
Nevertheless, most seasons produce fish of up to and
over 3lb in weight. Loch of Livister also has seriously
large trout, but they do not give themselves up easily.
Flies & Tactics Boats may be available on Loch of
Huxter, but bank fishing can be just as productive and
fish are taken from all round the shore. Bank fishing
only on Loch of Livister and do not wade in either
water. Flies: Loch Ordie, Woodcock & Hare-lug, Peter
Ross.
Permission George R. Polson, Whalsay Angling
Association, Valladale, Whitefield, Shetland ZE2
9AQ.
ISBISTER, Loch

(3/341558) along the minor road to Vementry. Loch
of Aithsness is just past Braewick, on the left of the

Commentary Easily accessible from the road, and from a
good track along the south shore. Approximately 35ft
deep and relatively comfortable wading, apart from
the east shore where you should stay on the bank.
Fish Brown trout averaging 8oz with the chance of sea
trout after August.
Flies & Tactics Best fished from a boat, but good bank
fishing as well, particularly along the south shore.

Flies & Tactics Bank fishing only and stay on the bank.
Wading is dangerous. Begin along the south shore,
paying particular attention to the burn mouth and the
two small islands, then work north up the west bank.
Fishes well early in the season. Try: Ke-He, March
Brown, Alexandra.
Permission See Loch of Boardhouse.
KIRBISTER, Loch of
Location & Access 6/370080. the loch lies to the north of
the A964 Stromness to Kirkwall road. A minor road
margins the west shore whilst a convenient track gives
easy access to the east shoreline.
Commentary Loch of Kirbister is shallow, one mile in
length and up to half a mile wide.
Fish An ideal beginners loch. There are excellent stocks
of good quality trout which average about 10oz in
weight. Fish of over 2lb are occasionally caught and
towards the end of the season there is a possibility of
sea trout.
Flies & Tactics Boat fishing is best, but bank fishing can
be productive, particularly along the north-west
shoreline and in the south-east corner. Offer Loch
Ordie, Invicta, Kingfisher Butcher.
Permission See Loch of Boardhouse.
PERRIE WATER, Mainland
Location & Access 6/335272. Leave the A966 road at
Costa (6/335282) and follow the farm road to Hewin.
The loch is immediately to the south.
Commentary An attractive little loch covering
approximately 15 acres. Outstanding wildflowers and
birdlife.
Fish Excellent beginners loch, well-filled with small
trout averaging 6oz8oz in weight.
Flies & Tactics Easily covered from the shore and the
trout are not too fussy about which flies they take.
Permission See Loch of Boardhouse.
OS Map 6
WASBISTER, Loch
Location & Access 6/397333. Loch of Wasbister, known
locally as Wester Loch, lies in the north of the Island
of Rousay, to the north of the school at Quoyostray.
Commentary Visit Rousay as much for its wealth of
Neolithic monuments as for its fishing.
Fish Excellent quality brown trout, pink fleshed and
averaging about 10oz in weight.
Flies & Tactics Comfortable bank fishing all round the
loch. Start in the vicinity of the promontory on the east
shore. Try: Black Pennell, Ke-He, Alexandra.
Permission Contact Trumland Estate, Rousay, Orkney,
tel: 01856 821400.

Sands of Evie 6/376263. For sea-trout fishing
lochations on the Island of Hoy, see OS Map 7,
Pentland Firth.
Commentary The majority of Orcadian sea trout are
caught in the sea, fishing from the shore, although they
may also be encountered caught in Loch of Stenness,
Loch of Harray and Loch of Kirbister.
Fish Season runs from 25 February to the end of October.
Best time, March and April. Fishing has improved
enormously over the past few year, almost certainly
due to the considerable downturn in the activities of
the fish farmers. Splendid fish are now being caught,
the largest being over 10lb in weight.
Flies & Tactics Bait and lure fishing is the preferred
method, but sea trout may also be tempted by Black
Pennell, Ke-He, Soldier Palmer, Teal Blue & Silver,
Peter Ross and Invicta. Take great care wading. Check
tide times and seek local advice before setting out.

from Gue (6/383291) at the end of the B9064. Follow
the peat track which runs north between Ward Hill
(210m) and Swarta Fiold (141m).
Commentary Muckle Water is the most productive of the
Rousay trout lochs. It is one mile east/west by up to
250yds wide. Also fish Perrie Water (6/400295),
which is immediately to the south of Muckle
Water.
Fish Trout average 12oz in weight. There are larger
specimens as well.
Permission Further information from the Orkney Trout
Fishing Association.
PERRIE WATER (Rousay) See Muckle Water.
SKAILL, Loch of
Location & Access 6/240180. Easy access from the
B9056 which margins the north shore of the loch.
Commentary One of the most attractive and exciting
Orkney lochs, close to the famous Neolithic village of
Skara Brae.
Fish Loch of Skaill has wonderful trout of exceptional
quality. Average weight, 2lb, but, be warned, they are
dour.
Flies & Tactics The loch is three-quarters of a mile
east/west by up to half a mile wide. Best results come
from boat fishing. Begin with a drift down the west
shore. Pay particular attention to the mouth of the inlet
stream at the south-west corner. Try: Black Pennell,
Invicta, Alexandra.
Permission See Loch of Boardhouse.

STENNESS, Loch of
Location & Access 6/280130. Loch of Stenness lies to the
north of Stromness and is easily accessible from
public roads.
Commentary This is the most difficult of Orkney lochs
but it can also be one of the most rewarding.
Fish One of the largest UK brown trout came from Loch
of Stenness and weighed 29lb 8oz. A cast of this fish
may be seen in Kirkwall and another is at the
Freshwater Fisheries Laboratory in Pitlochry. Stenness
trout are bright silver and their flesh is red. They
average about 1lb in weight, but fish of up to and over
7lb are sometimes caught as well as sea trout,
mullet, saithe, herring, flounder and cod.
Flies & Tactics Best results come from fishing close to
the shore, boat or bank. June and July are the most
productive months and you should mount your attack
on a rising tide. Offer them Black Pennell, Soldier
Palmer, Silver Invicta.
Permission See Loch of Boardhouse. Also, Standing
Stones Hotel, Stenness, Orkney, tel: 01856 850449.
STROMNESS, Loch
Location & Access 6/239106. Approach from the minor
road from Stromness to Glenfield.
Commentary This is an artificial loch and the public
water supply for Stromness.
Fish Some really excellent brown trout. Fish of up to and
over 4lb in weight have been caught in recent years.
Flies & Tactics Fishing from the dam wall is not allowed.
The rest of the loch is easily covered from the bank.
Try: Ke-He, March Brown, Silver Invicta.
Permission Orkney Island Council, Council Offices,
Kirkwall, tel: 01856 873535.
SWANNAY, Loch of
Location & Access 6/310280. The loch lies in the north
of Mainland. The west shore is approached from the
minor road from Twatt (6/273241) on the A986 via the
road to Loudenhill Farm (6/303278). The east shore is
approached from the A966 at Chrismo (6/316288) to
Dale (6/319277).
Commentary Loch of Swannay is shallow, often windy,
and covers an area of some 670 acres, being two miles
long by up to half a mile wide. The south end is graced
by Muckle Holm Island.
Fish The average weight of Swannay trout is in the order
of 14oz, but each season produces good numbers of
fish of over 2lb. Trout of 4lb in weight are not
uncommon.
Flies & Tactics Boat fishing is best, but bank fishing can
also be productive, particularly during the early
months of the season. Take care wading, because the
bottom is rocky. The most productive drifts are in the
vicinity of Muckle Holm Island, down the Loudenhill
shore about ten yards out from the bank, and the
south-east corner where the Burn of Eitheriegoe
enters. When boat fishing, hasten slowly, there are

walk beyond the end of the track.
Commentary Heldale Water, and its two neighbours,
Sands Water (7/248939) to the north and Hoglinns
Water (7/250913) to the south, are amongst the most
remote and least visited trout lochs in Scotland.
Fish Not many, and dour, but large. Trout of up to and
over 5lb in Heldale Water and Hoglinns Water, smaller
fish in Sands Water.
Flies & Tactics Bank fishing only. Heldale is largest loch.
Sands Water is one mile north, over Bakingstone Hill
(152m), Hoglinns Water lies quarter of a mile south
over Skird Hill (164m). Be prepared for serious

LOYAL ESTATE, hill lochs
Location & Access There are a number of small hill lochs
on the Loyal Estate, all of which will test lungs and
legs to reach. However, the Estate may be able to
provide an Argocat to take you to them. Enquire when
booking.
Commentary There are five named waters here: Loch na
Beiste (10/589459), Loch Aonghais (10/552479), tiny
Loch aBealaich Duibh (10/559486), Loch Fhionnaich
(10/566452), also known as the Childrens Loch
because the fish are not difficult to catch, and Loch na
Creige Riabhaich (10/585491) which lies in a corrie
below An Caisteal at a height of 550m. There are also
two, small, unnamed lochans below Cnoc nan Cuilean
(558m) at 10/601459.
Fish Loch na Beiste holds the largest fish, with trout
of up to and over 2lb occasionally taken. Fhionnaic,
the Childrens Loch is so named because it is
almost impossible not to catch trout, therefore the ideal
place to introduce little ones to the art of fly-fishing.
The other lochs all lie in magnificent settings and
contain fish that average four-to-the-pound.
Flies & Tactics Easy bank fishing all the way, not quite so
easy walking to get to them. Most standard patterns of
Scottish loch flies produce results.
Permission Mrs Betty Robertson, CKD Galbraith,

LOYAL, Loch
Location & Access 10/620490. Bounded on the west
shore by the A836 Altnaharra to Tongue road. Boat
locations given with permit.
Commentary Over 200ft deep, four miles long by
approximately half a mile wide, often windy, and to be
treated with respect at all times. Magnificent scenery,
with Ben Loyal, Queen of Scottish Mountains,
guarding west shoreline.
Fish Large stocks of traditional brown trout averaging
8oz/10oz in weight. Good numbers of larger fish in the
region of 1lb/3lb and, in the depths, ferox trout.
Largest taken in recent years, by trolling, weighed just
under 10lb. The loch is part of the River Borgie system
and the occasional salmon is caught.
Flies & Tactics Boat fishing is best, and allows easy
access to the east shoreline, which is trackless.
Outboard motor is essential, as are drouge and
flotation jackets. Unless trolling, stay within fifteen
yards of the bank. As a general rule, if you cant see
the bottom, you are fishing too far out. Begin on the
east shore at 10/630465 and work south, the extreme
southern end of the loch is excellent. First cast: Black
Pennell, Grouse & Claret, Silver Butcher.

MEADIE, Loch
Location & Access 10/752600. From the A836
Thurso/Bettyhill road. Park at 10/750620 and walk
south along a good peat track. Where the track turns
south-east, bear right over the moor to reach Loch
Meadie within 10 minutes.
Commentary Ideal for a family outing and for
introducing little ones to the gentle art, easily
accessible and often providing shelter in wild
conditions. A long, narrow, straggling loch, opening
out into a wide bay towards the south end. Dont miss
a few casts on little Caol-loch Meadie, on the east side
of Creag Meadie at 10/764595.
Fish Good baskets of trout which average 6oz/8oz, but
look out for larger fish as well.
Flies & Tactics Easy bank fishing with action all round
the loch to most standard patterns of fly, but the most
productive area is at the south end. Offer them: Ke-He,
Black Pennell, Silver Invicta.
Permission Altnaharra Hotel, Altnaharra, Sutherland, tel:

at /10/802568. Walk west through the forest to reach
the loch within ten minutes.
Commentary The best of the Strathy Forest trout lochs.
Loch Meala covers an area of some 80 acres and fishes
well in most conditions.
Fish Excellent quality trout which average 8oz/1lb with a
number of larger fish of up to 2lb in weight.
Flies & Tactics Both boat and bank fishing bring results.
Bank fishing is best from the west shoreline, the north
of the loch is most productive when fishing from the
boat. First cast: Loch Ordie, Grouse & Claret, Dunkeld.
Permission Halladale Inn, Melvich, Sutherland, tel:
01641 531282.
MODSARIE, Loch
Location & Access 10/648615. Between Bettyhill and
Tongue, north of the A836, within the ring road
through Borgie and Skerray townships.
Commentary Easily accessible and good fishing in
wonderful surroundings. A long, narrow loch, approx
600 yards by 150 yards, shallow which fishes well in
most conditions.
Fish Trout averaging 10oz in weight with the chance of
larger fish of up to and over 1lb.
Flies & Tactics Bank fishing only, although a boat is
occasionally available. The east shoreline brings best
results, particularly at the south end in the vicinity of
the small island. First cast: Black Pennell, Invicta,
Peter Ross.

(10/658610), Loch nan Cnamh (10/659618) and
Lochan Blar aBhainne (10/670613). A rewarding tour
of a series of remote, beautiful lochans lying to the
west of the Borgie Lodge Hotel.

NAM BO UIDHRE, Loch
Location & Access 10/845572 Approach from the A836
Thurso/Bettyhill road. Turn south at Strathy
(10/844650) and drive past Bowside Lodge to park at
10/828583. Walk east-south-east up the hill for approx
25 minutes to reach the loch.
Commentary An excellent little loch. Also visit Loch
nam Bo Uidhre as part of a circular tour including
Coal Loch North (10/850560) and Loch na Meana
(10/850560). Loch nam Bo Uidhre is a shallow loch
and covers an area of about 20 acres. The moor
surrounding the loch is very boggy.
Fish Good trout averaging approx 8oz with a few larger
fish of up to and over 1lb.
Flies & Tactics Bank fishing, and best results come from
along the east shoreline, by the outlet burn, and in the
south bay. Most flies tempt. Start with: Black Pennell,
March Brown, Silver Butcher.
Permission Halladale Inn, Melvich, Sutherland, tel:
01641 531282.
NAM BREAC BEAG, Loch
Location & Access 10/825629. Approach from the A836
Thurso/Bettyhill road by turning south at Strathy
(10/844650). Park near Bowside Lodge at
10/830610 and walk west, crossing the Strathy
River. The loch lies 10 minutes away through the
forest.
Commentary Sheltered from most winds. Shallow and
surrounded by forestry.
Fish Sport with bright little trout averaging 6oz.
Flies & Tactics Good baskets can be taken and most
patterns of fly will produce results. A boat is
sometimes available.
Permission Halladale Inn, Melvich, Sutherland, tel:
01641 531282.
NAM BREAC BUIDGE, Loch
Location & Access 10/650570. Between Bettyhill and
Tongue, south of the A836. Park at 10/657586 on the
west margin of the Borgie Forest. Follow a peat road
which devolves into a track across the moor. Journey
takes about thirty minutes.
Commentary Breac Buidge is approximately 600 yards
long by up to 300 yards wide, with a delightful,
scattered bay at the south end. Splendid views south
and west to Ben Loyal and Ben Hope. One of the best
lochs in the area.
Fish As the name implies, the loch of the golden trout,
Breac Buidge fish are of excellent quality. They

the west. There are also good hill lochs, Loch nan Uan

Gaineamhach (16/583245), Loch Truderscaig
(16/710328), Lochan Dubh (16/729329).
Fish Salmon and a few sea trout. Detailed catch statistics
are not available but a reasonable estimate would be in
the order of 50 to 80 fish per season. The trout lochs
hold a wide variety of fish, from modest 8oz
specimens, right up to glass-case candidates, primarily
from Loch Choire, where boat fishing brings best
results.
Flies & Tactics Few fish are in the river until after April
and thereafter the Mallart is entirely dependent upon
good water levels to give of its best. A single-handed
rod is appropriate and wading is not required. Very
much a case of stalking fish, keeping well back from
the river bank. Lengthen line from one spot, rather
than marching down the bank. Flies: Small, dark
patterns, including trout flies such as Black Pennell,
and Garry Dog, Willie Gunn, Hairy Mary. Apart from
Loch Choire, the trout lochs are fished from the shore.
Offer them: Loch Ordie, Soldier Palmer, Silver
Butcher.
Permission Fishing on the Loch Choire Estate is rarely
available on a casual basis although it may be
worthwhile to speak to the Head Keeper (tel: 01431
831222) Details of sporting lets from Bell Ingram in
Bonar Bridge (tel: 01863 766683).
MEADIE, Loch
Location & Access 16/496397 (See also OS Map 9 at Gd
ref: 500405). Easily accessible from the minor road
from Altnaharra to Hope. Boats are moored in the bay
close to where the loch flows out under the road to join
the River Mudale.
Commentary From the road, Loch Meadie looks a
modest affair, but in fact the loch extends north for a
distance of 3 miles, dominated to the west by Ben
Hope (927m) and to the east by Ben Loyal (764m).
There are two, small, remote, trout lochs nearby,
difficult of access, but well worth a visit: to the west,
Lochan Sgaothaichean (9/489443), and to the east,
Loch aBhuic (9/519418). Attack using the Loch
Meadie boat. Take compass and map in case of bad
weather. Loch Meadie is one of the prettiest lochs
in Scotland and the islands in particular offer a
wealth of wildflowers, unharmed by the attentions of
grazing sheep or deer. The island in the narrows, 1
mile north from the mooring bay, is the perfect place
for lunch.
Fish From time to time Loch Meadie produces large
fish: a trout of 4lb was caught a few years ago at the
north end, and salmon are occasionally taken.
However, Meadie is most famous for large baskets of
6oz/8oz trout and this is one of the best places in the
north to introduce newcomers to the gentle art of
fly-fishing.
Flies & Tactics Boat fishing is best and an outboard motor

the last three. Compass and map and climbing bootcountry. Start from West Merkland and, after 12 a mile,
bear west along the north edge of the forest, up the line
of the Allt Beithe Burn. Loch Eas na Maoile is a step
west from the burn after the end of the plantation. The
burn will lead you north for 112 miles to the marshy
plateau containing Loch Ulbhach Coire. Find the inlet
stream at the north-east end of Loch Ulbhach Coire,
grit your teeth and climb steeply up the stream to gain
Lochan aBhealaich and Loch na Mang. Coire Loch
will tax you further and lies 1 mile west, below the
north face of Cam Dearg. Return to West Merkland by
retracing your outward journey. More user-friendly
lochs lie close to the east of the West Merkland
stalkers path, after a 212 mile tramp: Loch an Tuim
Bhuidhe (16/409355), Loch an t-Seilg (16/416360),
and Loch an Aslaird (16/422368). They are interlinked
and extend north for a distance of 2 miles. If you must
climb, then explore the lochans below Beinn Direach
(688m), to the west of the stalkers track: Lochan na
Creige Riabhaich (16/414378), and its satellite at
16/411373; and, to the north of Beinn Direach, remote
Loch nan Rath (16/407393). The effort involved in
reaching these distant waters is rewarding, not only for
the chance of a fish or two, but also because of the
matchless beauty of the surroundings. Fish all these
waters using traditional Highland patterns of artificial
fly: Black Pennell, Black Zulu, Blue Zulu, Ke-He,
Loch Ordie, Soldier Palmer, Invicta, Woodcock &
Hare-lug, Alexandra, Peter Ross, Dunkeld. Bank
fishing on the hill lochs and do not wade.

MUDALE, River
Location & Access Source:16/502390. Outflow:
16/578355. Accessible from the minor road from
Altnaharra to Hope.
Commentary The River Mudale rises in Loch Meadie
(16/498395) and flows south-east for six miles through
rough pasture and moorland to enter Loch Naver
(16/620370) close to the township of Altnaharra.
There are a number of pools and runs where salmon lie
and the surrounding scenery is magnificent. The River
Vagastie, which also flows into Loch Naver by
Altnaharra (16/579349), is rarely fished, other than at
the mouth. From May onwards, because of lack of
water, most of the River Vagastie virtually disappears.
There are, however, three, small trout lochs between
the river and Ben Klibreck (961m) and they are
reputed to hold some excellent trout of considerable
weight: Loch an Tairbh (16/569312), Loch na Glaschoille (16/559305), and Loch Bad an Loch

ABHIDIDH, Loch See Loch Farlary.
AN RUTHAIR, Loch
Location & Access 17/865369. The loch lies adjacent to
the A897 Helmsdale/Melvich road. A track, to
Greamachary (17/851394) at 17/880378, gives easy
access to the north and north-west shoreline of the
loch. The south end of the loch is close to the main
road.
Commentary Loch an Ruthair is 112 miles north/south by
up to 12 a mile wide. The loch is a public water supply
and rather featureless. Nevertheless, the surrounding
scenery is very attractive, with the Ben Griam
mountains to the west and Achentoul Hill (346m) to
the east. Britains highest Iron Age hill fort is situated
at the top of Ben Griam Mor (590m). A number of
smaller waters lie close by: Loch Culaidh
(17/863390), adjacent to the Greamachary track, Lucy
Loch (17/878397), near the railway line, Lochan Dubh
(17/881371), to the north of Achentoul Lodge, and
Loch Arichlinie (17/848350), a one-mile tramp southwest from Loch an Ruthair. These waters drain south
through Strath Beg into the Helmsdale River.
Fish With the exception of Loch an Ruthair, there is
nothing really large in any of the lochs noted above,
but there is the chance of a few trout of over 1lb in
weight. Although Loch an Ruthair still has a vast stock
of small trout, it has improved considerably, through
purposeful management, in recent years. Trout of up
to 6lb 8oz have been caught.
Flies & Tactics There are three boats on Loch an Ruthair
and two boats on Loch Arichlinie. Bank fishing can
also be productive and when doing so it is best to stay
firmly on terra firma. The north-west shore of Loch an
Ruthair, below the bulk of Creag Sail aBhathaich
(346m), is a good place to begin. On Loch Arichlinie,
fish are taken all round the loch, but the vicinity of the
inlet stream is the best place to start your attack. The

FARLARY, Loch
Location & Access 17/772050. Loch Farlary lies 5 miles
up Dunrobin Glen, immediately adjacent to and to the
west of the minor road from Golspie.
Commentary A great little loch for beginners.
Fish Modest brown trout which average 6oz/8oz. You will
find larger trout in Loch aBhididh (17/820083) which
is best approached from Kilbraur (17/823100) at the
head of Loch Brora, but be prepared for a decent
tramp to get there.
Flies & Tactics Both lochs are easily fished from the
shore, Loch Farlary trout will take most patterns of
artificial fly. The inhabitants of Loch aBhididh and
the unnamed lochan are more circumspect. Try: KeHe, Black Pennell and Dunkeld.
Permission The Sutherland Estates, Duke Street, Golspie,

HELMSDALE, River
Location & Access Source: 17/780340. Outfall:
17/028153. The river is accessible from the A897
Helmsdale/Melvich road which parallels the east bank
of the stream north to Kinbrace. Thereafter, access is
via the B871 Kinbrace/Syre road.
Commentary The Helmsdale is a classic Highland stream
which flows through wonderful countryside. The
Helmsdale is also highly exclusive and obtaining a
rod on the main river is difficult. Those anglers
fortunate enough to gain entry to a January week often
have to wait years before being promoted to even a
May week. However, the first mile or so of the river is
open to the public. This is also true with regard to the
upper river. The Badanloch Water, between the outfall
from Loch Badanloch to Loch Achnamoine, and the
Bannock Burn, from the outfall from Loch an Ruthair
to its confluence with the main stream is often
available for day lets.
Fish The Association Water (the first mile) produces
upwards of 300 salmon each season. The upper river
produces approximately 100 salmon. The Association
water also offers excellent sport with sea trout,
particularly at night.
Flies & Tactics When other northern salmon streams
suffer from lack of water, the Helmsdale system
benefits from the metered flow from the catchment
lochs: Loch Badanloch, Loch-nan Clar and Loch
Rimsdale. Consequently, water levels are generally
good throughout the season. The Association Water is
restricted to eight rods per day, the upper river fishes
two rods per day. A 15ft rod is advisable for the
Association Water, but a strong single-handed rod is
all that is required to tackle the smaller upper streams.
After April, the rule is floating lines only and the use
of treble hooks is not allowed. Small doubles work
best. Try: Yellow Torrish, Green Highlander, Willie

Isles of Harris and North Uist Introduction
No matter where you fish in Harris and North Uist,
permission must be obtained before doing so. At times, it
is difficult to establish who owns the fishing rights and
whether or not access is available. For Harris, a good
place to seek advice is: Sportsworld, 1 Francis Street,
Stornoway, tel: 01851 705464. For North Uist, you should
consider becoming an Associate Member of the North
Uist Angling Club. This will give you access to some very
good trout lochs (with the chance of salmon and sea trout
in some cases). Contact the club secretary, Philip Harding,
1 Claddach, Kyles, tel: 01876 580341. You should also,
always, seek permission from the local crofter before
crossing his land to reach a fishing location. Where access
information is known, it is noted in the appropriate text.
However, please double-check this information before
fishing as details may change.
