Theme: Father-Son love Thesis: The author uses literary features to show the change of theme and develop

the theme of father and son relationship Context: This Passage happens when the prisoners were forced to run from Camp Buna to Gleiwitz, and finally were ordered to halt in a deserted village. Elie and his father went to a shed to rest. #1 Oxymoron Simile The snow seemed to me like a very soft, very warm carpet This shows how Elie is really exhausted and he is not afraid of death anymore. He knows if he sleeps, he will die because of extreme cold weather. However, one thing that keeps him up is his father. This makes the change of theme from fear of death to the importance of father to son relationship. Elie needs to fight and live so that he can be a support of his father. #2 Repetition Come, my son, come This repetition shows elies father love and supports to Elie until the end. This is related to God that loves his people as a father that love his son with an unconditional love until the end. However, Elie failed to love his father until the end of his fathers life. It is seen in the passage later on when his father was about to be killed by an officer. Elie did not do anything. This also connected to Christians who sometimes dont love God back and betrayed him by sinning. #3 Characterization How he had aged since last night (and so forth) The author uses this characterization to show how hard his father had fought for his life and elies, which build up his spirit to live, and to fight for his father. He knows that his father will need him in the future. And this also shows the transition of the caregiver from his father to Elie which will be seen clearly in the next sections especially when his father is dying because of dysentery and malnutrition
