1. CHEMICAL PRODUCT & COMPANY IDENTIFICATION PRODUCT :

Nital (2%, 5%, or 10%)

SAN 4394

MANUFACTURER: Syncrude Canada Ltd. P.O. Bag 4009 Fort McMurray, AB Canada T9H 3L1 Emergency Telephone No. (780) 790-5094 SYNONYMS: PRODUCT USE: PREPARED BY: None Metal etchant Nathalie Brub (780) 790-4544 August 23, 2006

DATE OF PREPARATION/REVISION: 2. COMPOSITION, INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS Hazardous Ingredients Methanol Nitric Acid 3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Composition 90 - 98 Vol. % 2 - 10 Vol. %

CAS # 67-56-1 7697-37-2

8-Hour OEL 200 ppm (skin) 2 ppm

A flammable, corrosive, toxic liquid. Nital is unstable at concentrations greater than 10% of Nitric Acid, and may decompose violently. Nital can also become unstable if contaminated with heavy metals; do not dip an applicator brush into the material. Fumes are also flammable, toxic, and corrosive. Methanol is toxic through skin absorption. ROUTE OF ENTRY: Eye contact, Skin contact, Inhalation, Ingestion EFFECTS OF ACUTE EXPOSURE: EYES: May cause severe irritation and burns. SKIN: Corrosive to skin. INHALATION: Nitric acid causes upper respiratory irritation that may seem to clear up, only to return in a few hours and more severely. INGESTION: Nitric acid is corrosive to skin, mucous membranes, and teeth. Methanol is moderately toxic, and large doses may result in coma or death. EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE:

EYES: Methanol exerts a toxic effect on the optic nerves, and possible the retinae, and may cause permanent blindness. SKIN: Nitric acid is corrosive to skin. Methanol can be absorbed through the skin. INHALATION: Chronic exposure to methanol can cause changes in circulation, cough, dyspnea, headache, lacrimation, nausea or vomiting, optic nerve neuropathy, respiratory effects and visual field changes. INGESTION: Because of its slow elimination from the body, methanol should be regarded as a cumulative poison. 4. FIRST AID MEASURES EYES: Immediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes. In all cases, seek medical attention. SKIN: Wash affected area with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. INHALATION: Remove the source of contamination, or move victim to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, trained personnel should begin artificial respiration, or, if the heart has stopped, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately. Oxygen may be beneficial if administered by a person trained in its use, preferably on a physician's advice. GENERAL: In all cases, seek medical attention immediately. 5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES FLASH POINT (PMCC): FLAMMABLE LIMITS IN AIR: AUTO-IGNITION TEMPERATURE: 12 C (methanol) 6.0% - 36.5% (methanol) 470 C (methanol)

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Dangerous when exposed to heat or flame. Vapours form flammable or explosive mixtures with air at room temperature. Vapour or gas may spread to distant ignition sources and flash back. Containers may explode in heat of fire. Irritating or toxic substances may be emitted upon thermal decomposition. Vapours or gas may accumulate in low areas. Vapours may concentrate in confined areas. EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Class B fire extinguishers: Carbon dioxide, dry powder, polymer foam. Water fog can be used by trained fire fighting personnel. FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Evacuate all personnel from danger area. Shut off source of flow if possible. Use a water spray to cool fire-exposed containers and structures, and to protect personnel. If leak has not ignited, ventilate area and use water spray to disperse gas or vapour, and to protect personnel attempting to stop a leak. Exposed firefighters must wear full bunker gear, including a NIOSH approved positive pressure selfcontained breathing apparatus with full-face mask. 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES LEAK AND SPILL PROCEDURE: Forms explosive mixtures with air (see Section 5). Immediately evacuate all personnel from danger area. Use self-contained breathing apparatus. Remove all sources of ignition if without risk. Absorb the liquid on inert material. Ventilate area of leak, or move leaking container to a well-ventilated area.

CAUTION: Flammable gas may spread from spill. Before entering area, especially confined areas, check atmosphere with appropriate device. 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE HANDLING PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT: Avoid exposure to vapours. Avoid skin contact. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid contamination of Nital with any metals - do not dip an applicator brush into the material. Nital can become unstable if contaminated with heavy metals. STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Store in a cool, dry location away from ignition sources. Do not store near oxidizing materials. Provide adequate ventilation. Keep containers tightly closed. Avoid exposing the containers to heat, as this will cause a pressure build-up. Keep storage quantities to a minimum. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION EXPOSURE LIMITS: Methanol: Nitric Acid:

8-hour OEL: 15 minute OEL: 8-hour OEL: 15 minute OEL:

200 ppm 250 ppm 2 ppm 4 ppm

ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Ventilate confined space before entry. Provide local exhaust where appropriate to minimize fugitive vapours or mists. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Gloves: Acrylonitrile or neoprene Respirator: A NIOSH approved air purifying organic vapour/acid gas cartridge can be used at low concentrations (below OEL). If exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation is experienced, a NIOSH approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn. Prevent eye contact with this material. Wear chemical tight goggles. Provide an eyewash station immediately accessible to the work area. Do not wear contact lenses when working with this substance.
