THIRD THURSDAY BOOK CLUB

Wow! What a great weekend it was for a very successful and fun Art Fair. We would like to thank all the committee members and the countless volunteers who helped make the Art Fair run so smoothly. 90 artists in varied mediums displayed their talents and shared their time while offering patrons the opportunity to purchase unique items of Fine Art. These talented artists also donated 50 items for our Silent Auction which made over $2,500. Thank you for your support! Thank you to the Creative Arts Group for providing supplies and instruction for children to make Chinese Kites this year. It was special to wander over to the south lawn and watch our future artists first hand! Thanks to the following musicians who provided such great entertainment throughout the weekend: Richard Bellikoff, students from Sierra Madre Music, Dan Ames and Gayle Bluemel, Banna Beag Mall, Mike Tims, and the Jane Fuller Band. A special thanks to Sharon Murphy and the Exhibits Committee: David Darbyshire, Nancy Doyle, Peggy Matchin, Lorie Oliver, and Alison Snow-Wesley for all their time and hard work. They juried in 15 new artists this year. Thanks to Fran Garbaccio: Friends booth and volunteer coordinator, Michele and Rick Snyder: registration and information, Jean Sudbury: music at the band shell and on the south lawn, Fran Garbaccio and Sandra Dickey: Friends food booth, and Jane Zamanzadeh: Publicity chairperson who wrote articles and coordinated the press releases. Were pleased to report that the Friends Food Booth again sold out of their fabulous quick or sweet breads and made over $1,100. Thanks to all our bakers who once again made this such a success. Boy Scout Troup 110 provided security for the weekend as well as assisting in set up, helping as needed throughout the weekend and a great team effort in clean up on Sunday. Thank you! Carolyn Thomas, Director of Library Services, and her staff gave us many months of their time and support, and Church of the Ascension lent the canopies used over the picnic tables on the main lawn. Thanks to everyone with the City of Sierra Madre for your help and patience in guiding us through the process. There are too many to thank for all their friendly assistance and immediate response to our needs. Thank you to Darlene Traxler, President of the Friends Board, and to the whole board for your support this past year. Finally, thank you to all the rest who volunteered your time and support to the Art Fair, the Friends, and the Library. This is a special community of people and we are honored to call you our neighbors, family and friends. Thank you, Janet Emery and Susan Gallagher 2013 Art Fair Co-Chairs

READERS REVIEW

The Dream is Over

London in the 60s, heroin and John & Yoko, by Dan Richter

This author is our canyon neighbor. I learned of his book when he was a guest on my talk radio show,* regaling listeners with tales of his world travels including adventures with John and Yoko Lennon. Dan, a professional mime, teacher and star in the film 2001 Space Odyssey, traveled through India and Europe resulting in his befriending of Yoko Ono before she met John Lennon. He witnessed Lennons burgeoning romance, the breakup of the Beatles, became an intimate friend of the couple, as well as manager and photographer for Johns solo career. Dans confession of horrific struggles with drug addiction during this time is heart breaking to read, but were uplifted as he recovers. While reading this memoir, I felt like I was a fly on the wall during Londons swinging 60s era: the exploding rock and roll scene, colorful fashions (think Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Carnaby street, etc.), the psychedelic drug scene, and with all of the free love and drama one could imagine during this time sprinkled throughout. This book is published only in the U.K. at present, but is available at our Sierra Madre Public Library.

CONGRATULATIONS to our fabulous bakers. Through your efforts, we made $1,117.00 at the Art Fair Bread Booth. Onward and upward next year. Lots of great comments on the variety and tastiness. Your response was much appreciated. You are the BEST!!! The Art Fair would not have run so smoothly without the many volunteers who contributed their time on May 4 and 5. Thanks for answering my phone calls and e-mails to help with the Friends Booth, Bread Booth, Silent Auction and helping the artists by Hosting. We hope you realize how very important you are and will plan to attend our Annual Dinner on June 19 so that we can celebrate you, our volunteers. Thanks again! Fran Garbaccio
