Gifted Lesson Plan Lesson Number: Day 1 Grade: 6 Content Area: Earth Science/Rocks and Minerals Standards Addressed: S6E5. Students will investigate the scienti c view of how the earths surface is formed. b. Investigate the contribution of minerals to rock composition. c. Classify rocks by their process of formation. Gifted Learning goals Addressed: Gifted students will develop advanced research skills and methods. Gifted students will develop advanced communication skills. Technology: iPads, ComicBook App, Educreations Materials: iPad, internet access, aboutgeology.com Assessment: Teacher will assess students comic books for comprehension of the rock cycle. Procedure: Students will watch an educreation video on their iPads introducing the rock cycle. Students will then research a speci c rock using aboutgeology.com. After researching their rock they will explain how the rock was created in the rock cycle by creating a comic in the ComicBook app.

Students must include a picture describing their journey through the rock cycle. Students will use one of the choices below. Hand drawn on paper A drawing app such as neukids draw or doodle buddy to place in their eBackpack A collage of pictures collected from the internet

Procedure: Students will choose an active volcano Students will then explain how a sedimentary rock becomes a metamorphic rock inside of the volcano. Students will make an iMovie to explain the process.

Technology: iPad, internet access, infuselearning.com account Materials: Rock cycle board game, iPad Assessment: After the students complete the game the teacher will give the students a quiz using infuselearning.com Procedure: Students will play a rock cycle game. Students will complete the lab analysis to explain their characters moves in the game.

Procedure: Students will complete a project describing a piece of sand from Tybee Islands journey through the rock cycle. The sand must start on the beach of Tybee, become a sedimentary rock, and then go through every other stage of the rock cycle before returning the beach on Tybee Island. Students may choose how they want to present their topic: Keynote App Popplet App Explain Everything App Comic Touch App Pages App iMovie Paper and various art supplies
