Resident
10 year old creates program

By NICK COHEN
The Tabernacle Sun
Since 1967, Conte Farms has been giv-
ing residents of Tabernacle, to people
from all over the tri-state area, the op-
portunity to pick their own fruits and
vegetables. The Contes have found that
people appreciate knowing where their
food comes from and relish the opportu-
nity to pick it themselves.
Its a big draw for people to come and
pick their own fresh fruits and vegeta-
bles, Larry Conte, who runs the farm
along with his brother Joe, said. And
the kids always have a good time.
Conte has been working on the farm
his entire life. Originally owned by his
parents, the 500-acre farm located on
Flyat Road grows a wide variety of
fruits and vegetables. Their facility acts
as both a retail and pick-your-own oper-
ation.
We have a little bit of everything for
sale, all grown right here, sweet corn,
lettuce, tomatoes, Conte said.
The farm has transitioned from a
place where people bought food in bulk
to can and freeze to the mainly pick-
your-own operation they are now.
Throughout the spring and summer,
people will come looking to pick fresh
strawberries, blueberries and peaches.
Come fall, apples and pumpkins will be

She always has ideas in her
head. Things that she wants to
do.
That is what Tabernacle resi-
dent Kristen Lehmann said about
her 10-year-old daughter Shayna.
Her most recent idea may be her
best yet.
Shayna recently partnered
with Virtua Foundation on the
development of a new program
designed specifically for kids
who wish to support others
through Virtua.
Hoping to help kids who are in
the hospital, Shayna, with the
support of her parents, Justin
and Kristen, reached out to Vir-
tua through email in early April
asking what programs they had
in place for kids to help other
kids.
They responded in quick fash-
ion, but not with just a place to
send a check, or a list of bureau-
cratic nonsense that you might
expect; they wanted Shayna to
come in and discuss her ideas
with them.
I think it was within two days
of Shayna reaching out to them,
they had contacted her asking
what her ideas were and if she
wanted to discuss them, Kristen
said.
I just thought it was so cool
how quickly they got back to her
and that they wanted to listen to
what she had to say. They said
her email made their day.
Virtua, with four hospitals in
this area alone, had many
fundraising programs in place
but none that specifically focused
on kids helping other kids.
Shaynas idea was bigger than
hosting a few fundraising events;
she wanted to help build a pro-
gram with that specific purpose.
It is inspiring when kids are
passionate about helping others,
said Rose McManus Coleman,
vice president of Virtua Founda-
tion.

GREAT
FATHERS DAY
PRESENT!
"Dud cuIIed und suid,
Set his present here|"
what families are looking for,
Conte said.
An unusually cold and wet
spring forced Conte to open later
this year than usual. At one point
in April, they had removed the
heaters from their storage area
only to put them back in a few
days later.
The weather was tough on us
this spring, Conte said. With it
being so much cooler, the crops
people come to pick took a bit
longer to ripen.
Once the farm did open on
June 1, there were crowds of peo-
ple ready to welcome the estab-
lishment back as well as get a
taste of summer.
People loaded up on the trailer
for a ride out into the fields.
A lot of our business is people
who have been coming to this
farm for years and years, Conte
said. They bring their families
or tell their friends. Word of
mouth is the biggest source of
our business.
And if you are looking to stray
from the healthy fruit and veggies
options, Conte is more than
happy to welcome you into the
bakery where custard and ar-
guably the best apple cider dough-
nuts are available.
We pride ourselves on being a
family run business, and with
that we want to cater to the fami-
lies coming to our farm, Conte
said.
The farm is open daily from 8
a.m. through 6 p.m. Call (609) 268

Construction work for the re-
habilitation of County Bridge
D4.11 over the north branch of
the Rancocas Creek is scheduled
to begin Monday, June 17.
The bridge is located on Bis-
pham Street in Mt. Holly Town-
ship.
There is a possibility of some
required utility relocation work
beginning prior to June 17.
The project is estimated to take
about six months, with comple-
tion scheduled for early Decem-
ber, Freeholder Director Joseph
B. Donnelly announced recently.
The project will be constructed
in three stages while maintain-
ing one-lane of egress traffic exit-
ing out of Bispham Street to
Washington Street at all times.
A detour will be posted for
ingress traffic trying to enter Bis-
pham Street from Washington
Street using: Washington Street
to White Street to Charles Street.
The existing bridge was built
in 1938 and has been identified as
structurally deficient.
The rehabilitation includes the
removal and replacement of the
existing superstructure and
upper portion of bridge abut-
ments. The new superstructure
will be steel beams with rein-
forced concrete bridge deck and
sidewalks and a steel ornamental
bridge railing founded on new
portions of abutments.
The existing roadway width
and alignment will be main-
tained. Approximately 110 feet of
roadway, curbing and sidewalk,
and drainage will also be recon-
structed.
The majority of the
$1,432,959.00 project will be fund-
ed by the NJDOT - Local Bridge
Future Needs Fund, with the re-
maining portion funded by the
county.
The project will be constructed
by Montana Construction, Inc. of
Lodi, NJ.

Shaynas first fundraiser will
donate hair to Wigs for Kids
Virtua Foundation is delight-
ed to work with Shayna, and we
are grateful for her familys part-
nership.
Shayna is one of the young
leaders in our community who
has stepped forward with great
energy and compassion for oth-
ers.
Shayna presented several
ideas for how she would like to
raise funds to help support pro-
grams such as Child Life at Vir-
tua.
The goal of the program is to
ease a childs fear and anxiety
about being ill and in the hospi-
tal, or when a loved one is ill.
Child Life specialists provide
emotional support for families,
and encourage development of
children facing challenging expe-
riences, particularly those relat-
ed to health care and hospitaliza-
tion.
Her first fundraiser will be to
donate her hair to the charity
Wigs for Kids.
Shayna will be cutting 15 inch-
es of her hair and asks the com-
munity to sponsor her efforts by
donating dollars for each inch of
hair she donates.
Her hair will be cut June 13 at
Salon Luxx in Medford.
Shes excited to cut her hair,
Kristen said. She keeps saying
shes ready and wishes the ap-
pointment would come sooner.
Ultimately, Shayna hopes to
progress into a role where she
spends a lot of her time in the
hospital with other children.
Thats what she wants to do.
What shes most excited about is
the opportunity to spend time
with the children and their fami-
lies, Kristen said.
Just help them in anyway
that she can.
Donations can be made at

T
he late U.S. Sen. Frank Lauten-
berg wasnt even in his grave
yet, when the political maneu-
vering began.
The death of the 89-year-old New
Jersey Democrat on June 3 presented
Gov. Christie with several options, but
he has chosen one that will cost tax-
payers wallets dearly. Instead of al-
lowing voters to choose Lautenbergs
successor in the Nov. 5 general elec-
tion, hes ordering a special election
less than three weeks before on
Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The cost of an Aug. 13 primary and
an Oct. 16 special election is $24 mil-
lion. Since the governor has already
chosen New Jersey Attorney General
Jeff Chiesa as the interim replace-
ment, we wonder whats the harm in
saving taxpayers a bundle by allowing
Chiesa to hang on to the job three
weeks longer so that the cost of a spe-
cial election can be avoided. Democra-
cy is priceless, but is something else
going on here?
State Sen. Barbara Buono, whose
gubernatorial campaign against
Christie might have benefited from the
coattails of a strong Democratic U.S.
Senate candidate on the same Nov. 5
ballot, wasted no time taking the offen-
sive.
Earlier this year, the governor
cited money as to why he vetoed early
voting, Buono said in a press state-
ment, referring to Christies May 9
veto of legislation that would have let
people cast ballots during a 15-day pe-
riod before Election Day. However, de-
spite costing millions of dollars, Gov.
Christie made the cynical and arro-
gant decision to call a special election
in October.
Buono may not be without her own
political motives in this controversy,
but she makes a valid point.
As the governor, Christie has the
right to take advantage of the power of
his position, and he did just that. We
just wish it wasnt costing so much.
Christies costly move
Special election for Lautenbergs replacement will cost $24M

Christies decision to hold a special

Lautenberg? Let your voice be heard

College reflects success of baseball, softball season
With the end of softball and baseball sea-
son, Burlington County College reflects on
the successes of the Barons and a major
first for the BCC softball team.
The ladies secured the first National
Junior College Athletic Association Divi-
sion II Softball National Championship
berth in BCCs history and the baseball
team captured the Region XIX Division II
runner-up position with two impressive
wins in the tournament.
Both teams had players named to the All-
Region and All-Conference teams this year
and the ladies had an All-American.
For the Lady Barons, the win at the
NJCAA Region XIX Division II Women's
Softball Tournament earned them a spot at
the National Championship in Clinton,
Miss. for the first time in BCCs softball
team history. The ladies played well in the
championship against the other 16 commu-
nity colleges, but ultimately did not bring
home the championship.
On May 15, the ladies played No. 2 seed
Phoenix College and were defeated 9-1.
The team played the elimination game
on May 16 and lost 12-4 against No. 10 seed
Sauk Valley Community College. No. 1 seed
Louisiana State University Eunice brought
home the championship title. Melissa
Rustemeyer of Colonia was one of 13
women in the nation named to the NJCAA
Division II Softball Second Team All-Amer-
ican. She is ranked 16th in the nation for
home runs and 40th in the nation for RBIs.
Rustemeyer, along with Krystine Rice of
Marlton, were named to First Team All-Re-
gion and First Team All-Garden State Ath-
letic Conference for Division II softball.
Gina Gryniuk of Marlton and Krystal Pear-
son of Sayersville were named to Second
Team All-Region and First Team All-GSAC.
Lisa Kosteleski of Cherry Hill, Taylor
Hamliton of Willingboro, and Carolyn Grif-
fin of Marlton made Second Team All-
GSAC. Griffin, a pitcher, was also recog-
nized as the Region XIX Division II
Women's Softball Tournament MVP.
The mens baseball team entered the re-
gion tournament as the No. 3 seed and de-
feated No. 2 seed Lackawanna College 2-1
and No. 1 seed Mercer County Community
College 2-0 on May 10.
They advanced to the finals on May 12
and fell 9-10 and 12-13 to Lackawanna. They
ended the season as Region XIX Division II
baseball runner-ups with a 17-27 overall
record. DeVon Hedgepeth of Mount Holly
and Eddie Stiles of Lumberton were named
to First Team All-GSAC and Second Team
All-Region for Division II Baseball. Taylor
Place, a South Carolina native, made Sec-
ond Team All-GSAC.

College awarded funds from for projects
Burlington County College re-
cently announced that it has been
awarded more than $4.5 million
from the state for its proposed cap-
ital and equipment projects.
Gov. Christie and the Secretary

Hendricks announced the list of
the 176 approved higher education
state-supported bond projects sent
to the Legislature. All of BCCs
projects were among those ap-
proved.
To help the college secure the
