THE NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND APPLICATION

This is the time of year when high school seniors entering into college, 8 th graders entering to a private high school or community organization are making critical decisions about their future. In addition to completing that final year of high school or 8 th grade, the next chapter of life is a major area of focus. This next chapter often includes preparing for college or high school and figuring out how to pay for the associated expenses. The Newark Police Department Memorial Scholarship Fund would like to help relieve some of the financial burden by awarding scholarships to deserving Newark students and other educational organizations. The scholarship awards are funded through charitable contributions from Newark Police Officers and the community they serve. The organization just hosted its Annual Golf Outing on May 28, 2013 which generated funds for these scholarships. The Memorial Scholarship fund will proudly present several deserving students their scholarships at Police Headquarters, located at 480 Clinton Avenue, at 11:00 am on July 23, 2013.

Application Instructions
INSTRUCTIONS: Complete the Scholarship Application and submit along with two letters of
recommendation, your essay, high school transcript, and a wallet sized photo by Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for a Newark Police Department Memorial Scholarship, you must
be a resident of Newark, New Jersey and a student in your senior year of high school or 8 th grade who will graduate in June 2013 from a Newark Public School. Also, you must have plans to attend college or a private high school in the fall of 2013. Applicants should have an interest in law enforcement and support the goals of the law enforcement profession. Proof of proposed or actual college or private high school attendance is required, along with a demonstration of satisfactory high school or 8th grade performance.

THE ESSAY: Write an ESSAY about why you deserve to receive a Scholarship from the Newark Police
Department Memorial Scholarship Fund. Indicate your objectives and how you are preparing yourself for college or private high school. Also, include your plans for life after college. You may want to include information about your educational, career, and personal goals. Demonstrate your talent by writing about any special interests or special circumstances that you may wish the selection committee to consider. The essay must set forth your life goals and how you plan to attain those goals.

ESSAY FORMAT: Use 8 x 11 white paper, and limit the essay to one or two typed pages. Please
include your name at the top of the Essay page, and double-space with 1 margins.

COMMUNITY/SCHOOL SERVICES AND LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES: Please provide a

list of your community/school and leadership activities. This list may include, but not limited to, student body positions, community outreach, tutoring, mentoring, social clubs, sports teams, religious activities and any volunteer work.

AWARDS: Scholarship recipients will be presented with their scholarships at a Scholarship Awards
Ceremony at Police Headquarters, located at 480 Clinton Avenue, at 11:00 am on July 23, 2013. All recipients are required to attend this event where they will be honored.
