Abraham Lincoln

1809-1865

Thayer J. Willow Room June 2013

Introduction
Famous Quotation: "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

Best known for: Abolishing slavery by the Thirteenth Amendment and the Constitution.

What I nd interesting: is that he had the courage to stand up and realize that slavery is wrong.

3 Key Qualities: 1. Perseverance 2. Communicated and Shared 3. Overcame a Hardship

I chose this person because I found out that he stepped a big step to a better future for the USA by abolishing slavery.

Overcame a Hardship/Challenge
I read that when he was 7, he only went to school for one year and still wanted to learn more. He taught himself with his mom and dad's help and reading books. I think that this would be hard on him because it is hard to learn to read by himself. Teachers are called teachers for a reason because they make it easier to learn.

Showed Compassion and Empathy

He felt terribly bad for the slaves at the slave market in New Orleans because he felt that being sold in chains was not nice.

I think that because he felt bad for the slaves he was showing compassion. Most white people would not feel bad for the slaves.

Took Action
I read that in 1863, Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation which said that no one in the south can own a slave.

I think that this is taking action because before this there was slavery and this Proclamation was a big step towards abolishing slavery.

Persevered
He would go without sleep in order to study to be a lawyer.

I think that this is persevering because he didn't give up wanting to be a lawyer even though he was very tired.

Impact: How Things are Different Today

I read that he ended slavery by the Thirteenth Amendment and the Civil War. The 13th Amendment was a big law that abolished slavery in 1865. The Civil War was a war between the North and the South that started in 1861. The South didn't like that Lincoln was trying to abolish slavery. I think that this should be a world law and that no one should ever be slaves.

Viewed Problems as Opportunities

The Civil War between the North and the South was a problem, and he viewed it as an opportunity to end slavery.

I think that the Civil War was a problem and that not a lot of people could and would think of war as an opportunity.

Demonstrated Bravery
In 1861 Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States of America.

I think that this is demonstrating bravery because it is hard to defend a whole country but he was willing to try. Also, people might not like him as a president.

Communicated and Shared

In 1863, he gave the speech The Gettysburg Address, saying that no one can own each other.

I think that the Gettysburg Address was like the Civil Rights Movement because he was trying to abolish slavery.

Im similar to my Change Maker because I have helped people that were getting picked on. Im a Change Maker when I help people learn stuff that is hard for them.

My Change Maker is connected to George Washington because they both led very important wars.
