NATIONAL COMPETITION ON STUDENT AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE (SAVe) 2011 - INDIA ANNOUNCEMENT

National Institute of Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Earth Sciences, announced a competition for students pursuing engineering degree to visualize and design an AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE (SAVe). The focus is on developing innovative underwater technologies needed for ocean observation. Overwhelming response is shown by the students on this maiden initiative to attract young talented Engineers to Ocean Technological developments in India. As it was envisaged earlier, the role of NIOT is to sponsor the selected student team to participate in the International AUV competition in USA. Dr. M. A. Atmanand, Director, National Institute of Technology (NIOT) announced the National competition for students pursuing engineering degree to visualize and design Student Autonomous underwater Vehicle (SAVe) on 15-08-2010. The focus is on developing innovative underwater technologies needed for ocean observation.

STAGES OF SELECTION

Students through their educational institution can apply for this project Team should have 5 students and should be multidisciplinary NIOT through a panel of experts will scrutinize these entries and select the successful entries qualifying for Phase I (PDR Preliminary Design Report). The PDR report should be in PDF Format : Max 10 pages; A4 size; Arial 10; 1.5 spacing; PDF A mentor will be identified who could associate with this group in developing the concept. Conceptual Design Report CDR NIOT shall also extend his expert guidance through state- of- the- art facility and industrial experience. NIOT will appoint a Mentor who shall guide the team in preparing CDR. Then selected teams would be asked to make a presentation at NIOT. On the basis of the CDR review next level of selection (Phase II) will be done The successful teams would be asked to submit Engineering Design Model The winning team may be able to participate in the International AUV competition in USA NIOTs research vessel facility would be extended to understand the practical challenges involved while working offshore

WIDE PUBLICITY OF SAVe COMPETITON

This announcement was made on 15th August 2010 in NIOTs website and through leading National Newspapers. Only Students through their Educational Institution could participate in this Competition and the team should consist of five Students with multidisciplinary. Nearly 7100 had visited this site, 200 registrations were made and 55 teams had submitted their Preliminary Design Reports (PDR).

The first phase of PDR result was announced during NIOTs Foundation Day Celebration on 20th November 2010.The short listed 19 teams were congratulated for their performance through website and individual letters to Students and their respective Colleges.

The detailed Conceptual Design Report and oral presentation by the selected 19 teams was held at NIOT on 10th January 2011. A High Level Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr.M.R.Nayak with members from National Institute of Oceanography, Goa; Naval Science and Technology Laboratory, Vizag; Indian Institute of TechnologyMadras, Chennai and senior scientists from NIOT evaluated the students on the basis of oral presentation, CDR Report, work done on design and development of AUV, methodology adopted, team spirit shown and ability to define their ideas etc. The successful five teams were announced through Website on 11th January 2011. The Committee expressed their sincere appreciation to all the teams involved in this Competition.

INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL EXPERTS AND MENTORS NIOT extended technical support and also arranged the International Mentors who could be available to support the student teams. Final competition
The final AUV competition was held on 13th June 2011 at Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), Aquatic Complex, Velachery, Chennai.

Inspector General Satya Prakash Sharma, PTM, TM Commander Coast Guard Region (East) was the Chief Guest. In his speech he motivated students to work in challenging areas of underwater technology and emphasizing need for developing such newer technology for safe guarding the country. He also announced the winning team.

Dr M A Atmanand, Director, NIOT appreciated the participants and colleges and he also explained about the initiative by NIOT in conducting this national event and its importance in the creating awareness and interest among the young engineers. He also expressed the success of such a competition towards a team building activity

Dr R Venkatesan Coordinator of the competition delivered the Vote of Thanks and thanked all students who participated in different stages of selection and four teams in developing different designs of AUVs.

A National Committee comprising of experts from: National Institute of Oceanography, Goa Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Vishakhapatnam Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai Senior Scientists of NIOT were involved in selecting the winner.

Nearly 7100 had visited this competition web site, 200 registrations were received and 55 teams submitted their Preliminary Design Reports (PDR). Out of which 19 teams were invited for interview by NIOT. And finally 5 teams were selected to demonstrate their AUVs. The working AUV developed by teams were demonstrated for evaluation by the National committee. Following student teams from the below given colleges had demonstrated their AUVs in the finals:

The winning team would be sponsored by NIOT to participate in the International Competition organized by AUVSI Foundation, USA to be held at San Diego, USA during 12 17 July 2011. PRESS RELEASE The information about the Final SAVe Competition held on 13th June 2011 was published in a Regional Newspaper.

OUTCOME The aim of this competition is to attract young talented Students to work on under water technology and NIOT to support this national cause has been successfully fulfilled. The overwhelming response and interest shown by the students and interest seen from the students from all over India has been very encouraging and can help in ocean technological development in a long way.
