INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION I. PURPOSE This Job Specification provides criteria for the uniform and consistent presentation of Instrument and Control Symbology and Identification on P&IDs for the ECOPETROL Barrancabermeja Refinery Modernization Project (PMRB) Barracabermeja, Colombia.
II.
SCOPE Instrumentation Symbols and Identification shall be in accordance with the Standard ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 and the additional definitions, statements, requirements and exceptions described in the following sections of this Job Specification. These additional definitions, statements and requirements detail and describe the selected numbering scheme, graphic symbol, and other choices required by ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009. This Specification covers the generation of new P&IDs. It also applies to P&IDs provided by packaged equipment suppliers and to tagging conventions used in the instrument database. This document provides design guidelines for the P&ID symbol and identification conventions associated with Instrumented Control Systems including the tagging used for identifying hard & soft tags. This document also provides several typical P&ID representations of the symbols as linked to field sensing devices, motor and valve controls. The intention of this document is to clarify how to represent Instrumentation symbols on P&IDs, not to provide all details how to implement the control systems.

GENERAL A. Instruments shall be identified (tagged) by a system of letters and numbers generally in accordance with the ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 and the additional definitions, statements, requirements and exceptions described in the following paragraphs. B. Each instrument, device or component in the project shall have a unique alphanumeric tag number using the following style: XXXXX - UU NNN Z Z | | | | | | | | | Tag Number Suffix (1 letter) | | | | | | | Loop Number Suffix (1 letter) | | | | | Consecutive Number, 3 digits | | | Unit Identifier, 2 digits | Functional Identification (max 5 letter left justified) C. The Functional Identification will use a system of letters to classify the instrument, device or component functionality and will use up to five (5) letters left justified (see section VI). The Unit Identifier defines the unit with which the instrument/ device/ component/ loop or system is associated. The consecutive number will establish a loop identity for the instrument, in general, will be common to other instruments, devices or components of the loop of which is a part. The Loop and Instrument number suffixes are sometimes added to complete the instrument identification (Based on ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Annex A). D. The Loop Number Suffix may be added to a Loop Number to identify identical loops on identical equipment in the same processing unit when the service or equipment is assigned the same equipment identification number with a suffix, such as reactors, heat exchangers, and pumps. The Loop Suffix shall be one letter and shall be located after the numeric component of the tag number. E. The Tag Number Suffix shall be one letter and shall be located after the loop number suffix if it is used or after the numeric component of the tag number if the loop number suffix is not used. The tag number suffix may be added to Instrument Tag Numbers in the loop to designate two or more similar devices or functions: 1. Case 1 in different services, such as control valves that direct flow to different places or auxiliary devices, such as those that perform different functions.

INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION 2. Case 2 in the same service, such as control valves that direct flow to the same place or auxiliary devices, such as those that perform the same function. F. For the new Units, the Unit identifier will be a two digit number as shown in the table V.2 and the consecutive number will be a three-digit number between 001 and 999. G. For existing Units, the unit number will be a two-digit number. For process areas with similar Unit Number (i.e. U-200 and U-2000), a leading zero shall be included as part of the unit identifier. The consecutive number will be a three-digit number limited by the numerical sequence of the similar unit number: i.e. for process areas U-200 and U-250, the consecutive number will be between 000 and 499 for unit U-200 and will be between 500 and 999 for unit U250. In this case, the numeric component of the tag number (UU NNN) shall be provided by the Owner. I. Where ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 offers alternate methods of presentation, the project practice is to use the method requiring the fewest symbols. Symbols will not be shown for the following: 1. Valve positioners. Valve positioners will not be part of the Instrument Index. They shall be identified and included in the instrument database and P&IDs only if they are provided as standalone instruments or if they need to be installed distantly from the related final element. Balloons identifying flow primary elements. Flow primary elements will be part of the Instrument Index. Local process variable indicators on transmitter outputs, unless it is intended to designate a special location for the indicator, as shown by a note next to the tagging balloon. Square root extraction signal conditioning. Unless noted otherwise on the P&IDs, square root extraction of head meter type flow instrumentation is assumed to be performed in the transmitter.
2. 3.
4.
J. Transmitters with integral indicators shall be identified with letters (FT, PT, LT, TT, AT). K. Control Valves shall be identified with letters (FV, PV, LV, TV, etc). New positioners for existing valves shall be added to the instrument database under the same valve tag with a comment Existing Valve New Positioner L. I/P Converters and Electro-pneumatic positioners shall be identified with letters FY, PY, LY, TY, and AY and shall be included in the instrument database and P&IDs only if they are provided as standalone instruments or if they need to be installed distantly from the related final element. M. If it is required to use multiplexers or wireless transmitters, they shall be identified on P&ID and included in the instrument database. See examples 1 and 2 below:

Figure V.1. Example 2 N. Functional identification of an instrument shall be made according to its function and shall not be based on its construction. Thus a differential pressure transmitter used for flow measurement shall be tagged as FT or a pressure transmitter on an atmospheric tank to measure its level shall be tagged as LT and so on. O. The numeric component of Tag Numbers may be duplicated within the same unit area (e.g. FT -63001 and LT -63001 have a different first letter but have the same numeric component, 63001). VI. FUNCTIONAL IDENTIFICATION A. The functional identification of an Instrument shall be a system of letters generally in accordance with the ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009, extracts from which follow. Minor modifications have been made.
ECOPETROL BARRANCABERMEJA SPECIFICATION No: BARRANCABERMEJA REFINERY MODERNIZATION PROJECT (PMRB) BARRANCABERMEJA, COLOMBIA
INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION B. The functional identification of an instrument will consist of letters from Table VI.1, and will include one first-letter, covering the measured or initiating variable ([L]=Level, [F]=Flow, [P]=Pressure, etc.) and the succeeding letter covering the functions of the individual instrument ([T]=Transmitter, [C]=Controller, [I]=Indicator, etc.). Additional letters can be included as modifiers of the first of succeeding letter previously mentioned. Modifiers shall be consistently used wherever applicable. Use maximum five (5) letters as functional identification. C. The modifiers [R]=Run / [S]=Stop and [C]=Close / [O]=Open for the succeeding letters shall be used for the Run/Stop and Close/Open signals rather than suffixes (e.g. the Run/Stop push button shall be tagged as HSR -82001 and HSS -82001 instead of HS -82001A and HS -82001B). D. Control Signal to auxiliary electrical devices like motors interposing relays, shall use [Y] rather than [M] or [X] as first-letter (e.g. YY -82001 instead of XY -82001). E. Auxiliary devices like solenoid valves shall initiating loop and not upon their output loop. be tagged based upon their
F. All Control Functions shall include the modifier [I] (e.g. FIC of FC -82001).
-82001 instead
G. Safety valve, pressure relief valve, safety relief valve, vacuum relief valve and thermal relief valve shall use the functional identification [PSV]. An Identification / Tag Number Suffix could be added to Identification / Tag Numbers of these valves in case of a multiple relief valve system scenario. H. The Deviation Alarm is an alarm generated when the difference between two analog values exceeds a limit (e.g., deviation between primary and redundant instruments or a deviation between process variable and setpoint). The general deviation alarm between redundant transmitters shall use the functional identification [*AD*], i.e. the high deviation alarm for the transmitters PT -82501A, PT -82501B and PT -82501C shall be PADH -82501. I. The Motor Operated Valves for the Offsite Area (U-7100) and the existing units could be identified [MOV] to keep consistency with the existing tag naming convention in the ECOPETROL Barrancabermeja Refinery. J. The Tank Gauging System and Motor Operated Valve host stations could use the functional identification [UK]. K. The Level Transmitter part of a Tank Gauging System shall use the functional identification [UT] instead of [LT]. This level transmitter usually gets multiple process variables (level, pressure and temperature) for the tank gauging system. L. The water level transmitter part of the existing Tank Gauging System could use the functional identification [NT] or [LT] in accordance with tag naming convection existing unit.

INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION M. The Variable Modifier [Z] shall be used to identify components of the Safety Instrumented Systems. N. Readout/Passive Function indicate [I] applies to the analog or digital readout of an actual measurement or input signal to a discrete instrument or a distributed control system's video display unit. It should apply to field signal indicators (4-20 mA, 0-100%, engineering units with low accuracy) and remote display indicators (engineering units with high accuracy). O. The attachment A includes a table with the allowable first letters for single and multi-input components. P. The Measurable Variable [Y] should be used for sequence controlled logic which is associated with batch control (i.e. Coke Drum Valving sequence). Q. Refer to the Job Specification 123939-60A18, Control Systems-Electrical Interface for Motor Control Tagging convention. Typical tagging for motor control is shown in the legend sheets, Attachment C.

INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION Notes for Table VI.1 -- Meanings of Identification Letters (Reference ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Section 4) 1. A user's choice letter is intended to cover unlisted meanings that will be used repetitively in a particular project. If used, the letter may have one meaning as a first-letter and another meaning as a succeeding-letter. The meanings need be defined only once in a legend, or otherwise, for that project. 2. The unclassified letter [X] is intended to cover unlisted meanings that will be used only once or to a limited extent. If used, the letter may have any number of meanings as a first-letter and may have any number of meanings as a succeeding-letter. Except for its use with distinctive symbols, it is expected that the meanings will be defined outside a tagging balloon on a P&ID. For example, XR -00002 may be a stress recorder, XR -00003 may be a vibration recorder, and XX -00004 may be a stress oscilloscope. 3. First-letter [A] for analysis covers all analyses that are not listed in Table 2 and are not covered by a user's choice letter. It is expected that the type of analysis in each instance will be defined outside a tagging balloon on a P&ID. 4. A pilot light that is part of an instrument loop shall be designated by a first-letter followed by succeeding-letter [L]. For example, a pilot light that indicates an expired time period may be tagged [KL]. However, if it is desired to tag a pilot light that is not part of a formal instrument loop, the pilot light may be designated in the same way. Except motor status lights which shall be not tagged [XL], regardless of the contact source. See note 2 above. Status lights for valves shall be tagged [ZLO] for the open position and followed by [ZLC] for the closed position.

VII.
LOOP IDENTIFICATION A. The loop identification of an instrument shall have a unique alpha-numeric loop number using the following style: X - UU NNN Z | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Loop Number Suffix (1 letter) | | | | | Consecutive Number, 3 digits | | | Unit Identifier, 2 digits | First Letter - Functional Identification (max 2 letter left justified) B. Refer to section V.General on this document for the completed description of each part on the Loop Identification. C. A Loop Number Suffix may be added to a Loop Number to identify identical loops on identical equipment in the same processing unit when the service or equipment is assigned the same equipment identification number with a suffix, such as reactors, heat exchangers, and pumps. The Loop Suffix shall be one letter and shall be located after the numeric component of the Loop Identification Number. D. Because of the critical nature of the safety relief devices, [PS] is considered as Measured/ Initiating Variables in the Loop Identification Number.
VIII.
SYMBOLS A. It is not the intention of this standard to list all symbols or combinations. ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 lists many more. Symbols not specifically depicted in the Job Specification 123939-60A3 shall be based on ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009. Instrumentation Symbology and details are also shown on the attached Legends and Symbols drawings in Attachment C. B. Control valve positioners and control valve electric-to-air converters will be shown. (Reference ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Table 5.4.3 drawings 2 and 5). These devices may be identified on P&IDs just in the cases specified in the paragraph V.I.1 in this document. C. In addition, various notations may be used on individual symbols. For example, the letter "V" just outside the circle can indicate an item supplied by a package vendor, or the letters "LP" can indicate a local panel mounting.
ECOPETROL BARRANCABERMEJA SPECIFICATION No: BARRANCABERMEJA REFINERY MODERNIZATION PROJECT (PMRB) BARRANCABERMEJA, COLOMBIA
INSTRUMENTATION SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION See Legend Sheets in attachment C. These letters shall be placed at the lower right of an instrument balloon as follow: (V) and (LP). D. The actuator action (FO, FL, FC) in the event of actuating medium failure shall be shown on the P&IDs, close to the control valves. (Based on ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009 Table 5.4.4 Method A). E. Most of instruments balloons used for tagging shall be solid line on P&ID's. These instruments may be repeated on auxiliary flow diagrams (AFD's), in phantom to provide a clear functional understanding. If it is required to show the same balloon in two different P&IDs, just one of them shall be shown with solid line and the other ones shall be shown with dash lines. F. An arrow head shall be used when required to clarify the direction of the signal for all line types. It shall be shown at the end of the line where it enters a device. G. All alarm/trip values (i.e. temperature, flow, pressure, etc.) shall NOT be shown on P&IDs but shall be provided as part of the instrument database. H. The circle within a square shall represent the Primary shared-display, sharedcontrol system devices or functions. If the system is other than the primary DCS device or function, it can be identified as notation outside of the bubble; such as PLC-1. I. The rotated square within a square shall represent the Safety Instrumented System devices or system. If the system is other than the primary SIS device or function, it can be identified as notation outside of the bubble, such as BMS-1. J. The type of elements for temperature primary elements and level transmitter shall be identified on the EFD according to the instrument measurement notation table in the attachment B on this Job Specification. K. The Tank Gauging System and Motor Operated Valve host stations shall use the Computer System and Software Symbol shown in the ANSI/ISA-5.1-2009, Table 5.1.1 Symbol No 3 Column C.
