HANDS OFF OUR ELEPHANTS!

On the 7th April, a Vietnamese traveler was arrested in Nairobis international airport while in transit from West Africa to Vietnam, Asia. He was charged with illegal possession of elephant, he had 2 suitcases with 488 ivory bangles inside, weighing a total of 33.6 kg which Kenya Wildlife Service valued at US$67,000 (Ksh 5,500,000). He pleaded and was found guilty in a Nairobi court. His penalty was US$500, (Ksh 40,000), which he paid immediately and then flew back to Vietnam. 33.6kg of ivory represents the slaughter of between 4 to 15 elephants depending on the size of their tusks. That means the Kenyan law, currently values an elephant between US$30 and US$115 per animal. The last time you went to the supermarket, you spent the equivalent to an elephant being poached and killed for its ivory. In President Uhuru Kenyattas, inauguration speech he stated: My fellow Kenyans, poaching and the destruction of our environment has no future in this country. The responsibility to protect our environment belongs not just to the government but to each and every one of us. Citizens and friends of Kenya, let us join together, so that President Kenyatta, hears a cry from each of us to stop the poaching and destruction of Kenya and secure the future for elephant populations across the land.

KENYAS POACHING TALLY AS OF 12 JUNE 2013

137 Elephants 24 rhinos 5,842kg of ivory recovered 123 arrests

We the citizens and friends of Kenya, request President Uhuru Kenyatta, to stop the poaching and destruction of Kenya by:
1. Legislating an emergency law to recognise that wildlife crime is a serious crime, not a petty one, equivalent to drug trafficking. And it therefore must incur similar sentences of 15 years in jail for killing wildlife or illegally trading in wildlife products. 2. Immediately initiating a crackdown on corruption in state organisations responsible for wildlife enforcement and international trade, while at the same time mobilising forces to crush the criminal cartels. 3. Initiating talks with the leaders of China, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and other countries that are consuming ivory and rhino horn to stop the demand for our products.
