Write a letter describing hypothetical situations using appropriate language expressions LEARNING CONTENT A. GRAMMAR ITEM: Subjunctive Mood of the Verb B. LANGUAGE FUNCTION: Expressing ones wishes/dreams and describing hypothetical situations PRESENTATION A. Elicitation Present a letter to the students. Read it aloud to them. Highlight some sentences to be studied. Ask questions such as: What can you notice about the highlighted sentences? Do you think theres something wrong with the sentences? Can you identify it/them? Is this structure correct? If I were a woman? Should we use the verb were after I? Why? Why not? Do you know what it is called in English verbs? B. Highlighting of Forms What is mood? What is subjunctive mood? Mood is the form of a verb takes to indicate the attitude of the person using the verb. The subjunctive mood is used to express a suggestion, a necessity, a condition contrary to fact, or a wish. To state a condition or a wish that is contrary to fact. Notice that this use of the subjunctive always requires the past tense. Example: If she were late, she would take the bus home. [The subjunctive mood uses were, not was.] I wish that I were a genius. LEARNING EXPERIENCE/INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE PRACTICE Practice 1: Answer the question in complete sentences. Example: What do you wish were different about your room? I wish my room were larger. What would/could you do if that were different? If my room were larger, I would put a sofa in it. 1. What do you wish you had? What would/could you do if you had it/them? 2. Where do you wish you were? What would/could you do if you were there? 3. Who do you wish were here right now? What could/would you do if she/he/they were here? 4. What do you wish you had done yesterday/last week/last year? What would/could you have done if you had done that? 5. Where do you wish you have gone yesterday/last week/last year? What would/could you have done if you had gone there? Practice 2: Pick a partner. Talk about wishes and ifs. Use the suggested topics or make up your own. STUDENT A: Finish the sentence, I wish. STUDENT B: Create a sentence with if. Imagine what would happen if students A wish came true. Example: peace STUDENT A: I wish there were peace throughout the world. STUDENT B:If there were peace throughout the world, everybody would be very happy. Suggested topics to make wishes about: 1. this school 2. food 3. the world 4. a skill youd like to have 5. language 6. sports

PRODUCTION A. Discuss or write about any of the following topics in one paragraph. 1. If you could live in a different time period, which would you choose? 2. If you could ask (name of a world leader) one question, what would you say? Why? What do you think the answer would be? 3. If you had only two career choicesto be an artist or to be a scientistwhich would you choose and why? 4. What would the earth be like today if there were no humans and never had been any? B. After making one paragraph, transform it to a letter responding or communicating to Mario.
