A BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED, MYSTERIOUS, IMPRESSIONISTIC PIECE THE GLOBE & MAIL

William Forsythe, an American choreographer who is known internationally for his work with Ballett Frankfurt and The Forsythe Company, is acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st-century art form. His more recent works have further extended his exploration of dance and choreography as a fundamental principle of organization. In the second detail Forsythe first organized the movement thematically, and this was distilled by the dancers into solos, duets and group dances. Choreographed by Tony Award and Academy Award winner and recipient of Kennedy Center Honors, Jerome Robbins, whose work included everything from classical ballet to contemporary musical theatre. This ballet features the Romantic lyricism of Chopin and the fluidity of classical ballet. Robbins, one of the most popular choreographers of the 20th century, was also respected for his stage productions, including On the Town, The King and I, The Pajama Game, Bells are Ringing, West Side Story, Gypsy and Fiddler on the Roof. Other Dances was originally created for Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova and premiered at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1976. Emergence offers the thrilling theatrical impact of a full-company dancing to an original, electronic score by Canadian Owen Belton. Jay Gower Taylors underground, insect-nest set and Linda Chows costumes offer a visual parallel to Crystal Pites theme of social organization and interaction. Pite is a Vancouver-based choreographer and performer who has created works for Netherlands Dance Theatre, Ballett Frankfurt, BJM Danse Montral, Ballet BC, Alberta Ballet and Ballet Jrgen Canada, as well as for many independent artists.

Love Lies Bleeding

ALBERTA BALLET

Inspired by and featuring the music of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Featuring 14 of the classic songs of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin , Loves Lies Bleeding is a contemporary ballet that takes audiences through a series of theatrically dynamic tableaux, into the wild, dangerous and powerful world of pop music. The non-stop parade of dazzling costumes by Martine Bertrand rivals Las Vegas for sheer spectacle with eye-popping projections by New York-based Adam Larsen providing the backdrop for the dancers. Although rooted in the life and career of the iconic British knight, Love Lies Bleeding is not a simple biographical narrative. The main character is an obsessive Elton John fan and the ballet itself a fantasy in which he experiences the highs and lows of his idols roller-coaster career. Set in a vast, dark theatre littered with mementos, artifacts and the remembrances of past glories, the ballet poetically depicts the dramatic landscapes of a monumental cycle of compositions which has deeply inspired billions of music lovers around the world.

The ballet is inspired by life, but its not a biography per se. Rather, its an examination of the cult of celebrity through the story of a fan who starts out as a member of the audience before living out his rock star fantasies. The Globe and Mail

Robert Glumbek, a rising Canadian choreographic talent and recipient of the Clifford E. Lee Award, has created works for Ballet Mannheim, Toronto Dance Theatre and ProArteDanza, among others. A former soloist with The Great Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Warsaw and a member of Desrosiers Dance Theatre and Ballet Mannheim, this is Glumbeks first creation for Ballet BC. Dance Current says Glumbeks choreographic style must be exciting to performsensuous, sinuous with a ferocity that commands attention. One of Italys most talented choreographers, Walter Matteini created Parole Sospese in 2007. The work for 11 dancers is a poetic journey into the world of the Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533), the most celebrated narrative poet of the Italian high Renaissance. Matteini takes Ariostos inspirational words and melds them into an episodic world of imagery where the soul takes flight in the unconscious realm of the imagination. Matteini has created works for companies such as Ballets de Monte Carlo, Ballet Lyon and Aterballetto.

Johan Inger, formerly Artistic Director of Cullberg Ballet and a member of the Royal Swedish Ballet and Netherlands Dance Theatre (NDT), has created a breathtaking work for nine dancers. Inger says, our greatest blessings come to us by way of madness. Choreographed for NDT in 2001, Inger received the Lucas Hoving Award (Dutch) for best production and the Danza Danza Award for this ballet. One of Canadas leading choreographers, Aszure Barton has created for Mikhail Baryshnikov, The National Ballet of Canada, American Ballet Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, NDT, The Martha Graham Dance Company and Hubbard Street Dance. The New York Times calls Bartons work a rare instance of a dance that feels as if it were plucked straight from the choreographers extremely specific imagination and set, full-grown onstagefull of surprise and humor, emotion and pain. Ballet BCs Artistic Director Emily Molnar creates a new full-company work that explores the boundaries of the expressive body in time and space. Molnar is a former member of The National Ballet of Canada, Ballet BC and Frankfurt Ballet, where she created and performed an extensive repertoire under director William Forsythe. She is an internationally respected and critically acclaimed artist who has choreographed for Alberta Ballet, Ballet Mannheim, Ballet Augsburg, Ballet BC, Cedar Lake Dance, Pro Arte Danza and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, among others.

Bliss
BALLET BC
This full-evening work will be Ballet BCs first by Resident Choreographer Jos Navas, who credits his experience with Ballet BC with awakening an urgency to create classical dance but from a contemporary point-of-view. I want to change the way we look at contemporary ballet and bring back the beauty of pure movement. Part of the full-evening work includes a reprisal of the acclaimed ballet The bliss that from their limbs all movement takes presented in the fall of 2010. Navas says: Collaboration is the most important aspect for me. My process is at times fast, creating without preconceptions, listening to the logic of the different bodies, and constructing on the spot. It is a process of diving into the unknown and allowing the body in motion to reveal the piece. The dancers of Ballet BC are a wonderful group of intelligent artists eager to explore my vision. I often compare my process to that of writing a novel and I look to Virginia Woolf, who observed that at some point an author has to find the works spine. Choreography works similarly. To me, even though it might not be apparent, everything in the work must relate to that spineLike a building, the piece should be solid. Most importantly, it should work if danced in silence.

Svengali
CANADAS ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET

Based on the novel Trilby by George du Maurier

Mark Goddens choreographic genius brings us an explosive new look at the original master of mind control. Yearning for public recognition, Svengali escapes the repression of his mothers ballet studio to a decadent world reminiscent of mid-century Weimar, where he finds the beautiful and malleable young dancer, Trilby. Under Svengalis entrancing influence, Trilby is transformed into the darling of the ballet world but her star ultimately rises beyond Svengalis powerful emotional grasp. This complex psychological drama unfolds with riveting choreography as Svengalis deepest family secrets are revealed. Youll be mesmerized.

Community Education and Outreach

Ballet BC is dedicated to community education that engages and informs audiences of all ages about the relevance of dance in our society. Student Dress Rehearsals These 90-minute daytime presentations for high school and college students take place before opening night at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. They are hosted by the Artistic Director who provides an overview to the dress rehearsal and lends insight into the work, its development and its artistic creators. More than 2,000 students attend these rehearsals each season. Studio Showings and Sneak Previews Sneak Previews are informal one-hour studio discussion/demonstrations that are open to the public and held two to three times each season, usually the week before openings. Introduced by the Artistic Director and featuring special guests, the presentations offer performance highlights in the intimacy of a rehearsal run through setting and include a question and answer period. Our Studio Showings allow viewers to witness a part of the working day of the choreographer, dancers and rehearsal director in the intimate and charged creative environment of the studio. Pre-Performance Chats and Post Show Receptions Pre-perfor mance chats are entertaining discussions held at 7pm in the Mezzanine of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre before every Ballet BC performance, featuring guest moderators in conversation with dancers, choreographers, composers, and conductors. Post-performance, the audience is invited to join the company for refreshments in the Mezzanine Lobby. Presentations in Alternative Spaces These shows are set in alternative spaces with the artists of Ballet BC working on site-specific presentations in an interdisciplinary venue in collaboration with local artists, giving the audience an intimate and experimental point of view into dance.
2011- 2012 SEASON

Training
Company Apprenticeship This pre-professional program supports the training needs of up to four exceptional young dancers each season. Apprentices work closely with Ballet BC dancers and are given the opportunity to perform with the company. Summer Dance Intensive This is a three-week professional summer training program for up to 30 advanced contemporary ballet students who wish to refine their abilities in preparation for a professional career. In collaboration with the Arts Umbrella Dance Program, the Summer Dance Intensive engages international teachers and choreographers. It offers classes in classical and contemporary ballet, modern technique, improvisation and composition, contemporary ballet repertoire and the creative process. Artist in Residence Ballet BCs Artist in Residence position was created to support former company members in transition towards independent careers in dance. This program provides the dancer with professional development opportunities in the fields of choreography, artistic leadership, rehearsal directing and teaching. Choreographic Workshops The Choreographic Workshops are an initiative created to share the wealth of knowledge and expertise of our guest choreographers and repetiteurs with the community. With a focus on the training and development of the professional dance artist (17yrs+), these choreographic workshops explore diverse perspectives and approaches to the creative process, and include learning repertoire and training for contemporary dance. Resident Choreographer Position Ballet BC has initiated a first-ever resident choreographer position at the company, marking the beginning of our long-term objective of committing to the development of a closer relationship between a choreographer, Ballet BC and our audiences. From November 2010 to May 2013 Jos Navas will hold the position of resident choreographer. In November 2010 Ballet BC premiered Navas new ballet The bliss that from their limbs all movement takes. The next project in May 2011 will be a response to this work and represents the companys first full-evening work since its renewal. That will be followed in April 2013 with a full-length Giselle.
