SWISS Posts Record Passenger Numbers For 2011: Media Release

SWISS posts record passenger numbers for 2011

SWISS carried more passengers in 2011 than any airline had previously transported in
any year in the history of Swiss aviation. A total of 15 317 275 travellers flew with SWISS
last year, an 8.1% increase on the 14 168 718 of the prior-year period.
Annual production was raised 7.7% in available seat-kilometre (ASK) terms, while total
traffic volume in revenue passenger-kilometre (RPK) terms was a 7.1% increase on the
previous year. The added capacity was thus not fully absorbed by market demand.
The total number of flights operated systemwide rose 6.2% in 2011 to 150 131 flights
(compared to 141 405 flights in 2010). Systemwide seat load factor stood at 81.8%,
slightly below the prior-year record of 82.3%.
Intercontinental routes saw their ASK capacity increased by 6.8%. RPK traffic volumes
were a 5.5% improvement on 2010. Seat load factor slipped accordingly to 85.7%, a
decline of 1.1 percentage points.
European routes witnessed a 9.4% increase in their ASK capacity and a 10.6% rise in
RPK traffic volumes. The seat load factor of 74.3% was a 0.8-percentage-point
improvement on the previous year.
The airfreight business of Swiss WorldCargo reported a 1.7% increase in estimated
annual cargo tonne-kilometre sales. Cargo load factor for the year (by volume) stood at
78.5%, a 2.6-percentage-point decline on the prior-year period.
SWISS operated 7.4% more flights in December than it had in the same month in 2010.
The airline also carried more passengers than in the prior-year period: a total of 1 194
594 (compared to 1 126 551 in December 2010). Systemwide seat load factor for the
month amounted to 79.5%, down on the 80.8% of the prior-year period. On the airfreight
front, the 82.9% cargo load factor (by volume) was unchanged from the previous
December.
SWISS will publish its financial results for 2011 on 15 March.
