The following is an excerpt of a Caller article I wrote 10 years ago about our congregations vision. In my humble opinion, we have fulfilled much of that vision, and we should rejoice over the many people who facilitated our realization of that vision. The vision God offers our church is becoming clearer and clearer. For example, it is clear that we are called to provide stronger ministry to and with our youth and young adults, continue to care for our shut-ins and other members with special needs, strengthen ministry to and with our seniors, and welcome the stranger in everything we do. We have work to do on our facility to make our church more hospitable and accessible. We will need to develop more small groups for new members to claim First Christian Church as home. Where do you feel a sense of ownership with the vision emerging in our church? Do you feel committed to sharing a substantial portion of your time and resources to strengthen youth ministry, young adult ministry, or senior ministry? Have you been sharing your time, talent and resources faithfully for years now, or is the idea of participating in the realization of a collective vision new to you? Do you hear the voice of the Spirit urging you to increase your giving so we can continue to support the part-time Associate Pastors and the important work they do while we expand our staff to include a youth ministry coordinator? Where is God calling forth your passion to be a part of the realization of our vision? The difference between a vision and a dream is commitment. When we embrace a vision, we commit ourselves to doing our part to make that vision a reality. Dreams never become reality unless they are formulated into concrete visions, which in turn are fleshed out in concrete goals. First Christian Church has ministered effectively in the name of Jesus Christ for 98 years because its members took ownership of the vision God gave them. If we are to realize our collective vision together, each of us must take ownership of that vision. What is God calling forth in our congregation today? Surely we are called to continue strengthening our ministry to and with youth, young adults, seniors, and our homebound or ailing members. Most of us see the great benefit weve provided our members and our community through our small group ministries and educational opportunities. We can also see the value in the efforts weve made to improve our accessibility, hospitality, and visibility in the community. What new efforts would God have us make? Are there areas of need within our congregation or our community we are called to address? As the Council of Elders spends time in prayer and discernment on these questions, I invite all of you to share with us your vision for our church. Email me at darrellmac@mac.com with your ideas for our churchs vision. If you prefer, make an appointment with me and share your vision for our church. Talk with Deb Taylor, the chair of our Elders and/or any of our Elders about your concerns, ideas, and inspirations. Its time for us to review, reshape, and recommit ourselves to a common vision for our church. Weve come a long way with help from long-standing members, new members, and friends. Where is God calling us to focus and serve? How can we be Good News people?

Senior Adults Meet this Tues., June 18

The seniors meet this coming Tuesday, June 18, at 12 noon for our monthly luncheon and meeting. Our guest this month is Taylor Fee, daughter of Chris Fee and Granddaughter of Ted and Sammie Adams. Taylor has grown up in our church. She received her undergraduate education at the University of California, Irvine with a double major in Political Science and International Studies, graduating in December 2010. Since the fall of 2012 she has been in the graduate program at the University of San Diego working on an M.A. in International Relations Program. During Taylors time at the University of San Diego she has been able to take two trips relating to her studies. She attended the annual three-day conference of the NATO parliamentary assembly in Prague. At the conclusion of the conference she and two classmates took some personal time to go to Krakow, Poland and to see Auschwitz. Her second trip was to Europe where she took a course on Europe and the Islamic world studying European relations with the Middle East and North Africa. She spent time in Paris, Brussels, Vienna and Istanbul as part of her study. She has shared many stories with us of her trip and we think you will enjoy what she has to share. Please come for fellowship together and for Taylors presentation and pictures of her journeys. Bring lunch and join us at noon on June 18.

Mission Trip To Joplin Missouri

Eight people attended the meeting held after worship on June 9 to discuss the possibility of our having a team of volunteers go on a Mission Trip to Joplin, Missouri, this fall. After discussion of what's involved in this trip, these dates were chosen for this trip: Sunday, October 6 through Saturday, October 12. Those dates will be confirmed with Disciples Volunteering this week to see if there are openings for us to provide some of the desired group of 25 volunteers they hope to have in Joplin that week. Those who have indicated that, as of now, they plan to go to Joplin are Sherry Herrera, Ed Linberg, Craig Wallace and Barry Woodbridge. At least four others were interested in going on this trip, but for various reasons decided they could not participate on these dates. They were: Phil Forbes, Randy Langston, Paige Richmond and David Styffe. We are grateful to them for their interest in this project even though it turned out they will not be able to be part of it. If you are interested in being part of this trip please let Ed Linberg know of your interest ASAP. FYI, the cost per participant is $75 for food and lodging for the week at a Disciples congregation in Joplin. Transportation costs will be in addition to this amount. The Outreach Ministry

From Your Associate

Worship Services on Sunday are one of the most tangible ways that we come together to be filled so that we can go out into the world and be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is in those moments that we connect with one another, that we sing together, pray together and learn something new about the scriptures that guide us. Our journey with our emergent worship service has been an exciting one. We began over a year ago on Sunday mornings, and we learned a lot about what we were doing, and spent a lot of time in prayer about where we

felt the spirit leading us. It was after much discernment that we knew the best thing for the worship service would be to move the time to the evening. And what a ReFreshing move that was! Emergent Worship sounds a bit foreign to many people, so I want to share a little of what you can expect when you come to this worship experience. Our worship service is not what many people call contemporary, despite the fact that we have a worship band. Emergent worship is a very experiential service. As you enter the service you will see different Prayer Encounters sometimes called Prayer Stations set up throughout the sanctuary. These are available and encouraged to be used at any point during the service. If you listen to the message better while doodling, we always have a table with crayons, markers, and paper for you to engage in that way. We also have a table with candles and rocks, paper and pens, where you can write down your prayer concerns or celebrations. If you put a prayer under a rock it stays between you and God, if you place a prayer under a candle, we will add it to the churchs prayer chain. We have 1-2 other prayer encounters that rotate in order to fit the theme for the month. We sing a lot of music, some of it is praise music, some is secular music that fits our theme, but all of it is bringing us closer to God. There is a short message - usually no more than 6-7 minutes, and partaking of communion that leads into an extended prayer time where you can experience the prayer encounters, pray in your seat, or pray with one another. The experience you have in this worship service is adaptable to your own style. If you enjoy more interaction, that is encouraged; if you want to sit and be surrounded by the experience, that is available as well. If you have not made it to our emergent worship service, I invite you to come and experience something just a little bit different. We would love to experience worship with you.

We're Close To The Final Call For Emergency Clean-Up Buckets

Following worship on June 9, Phil Forbes, Coordinator for the Emergency Clean-Up Bucket Project, reported that he received funds for 3 more buckets. This pushes our total of buckets we'll contribute to 32. How high will the number go? No one knows the answer to this question yet. However, we do know that we have just two more Sundays before this project will wrap up on the final Sunday of this month--June 30. Since the "The Caller" will not be published on Sunday 6/23, this is essentially our last reminder to you about this project, which has had a truly phenomenal response to date. If you'd like to purchase a complete bucket by yourself, or in partnership with others in the congregation, give a check to Phil. Make it payable to our church and turn it in on either 6/16 or 6/23. Phil will order as many buckets from ACE Hardware of Fullerton as funds allows. The cost of each bucket is $62.14 If you'd like to simply contribute some items from the list of supplies that are to be placed in each bucket, that's fine too. Be sure to bring in any such items you choose to purchase on, or before, Sunday, June 23. If you'd like to contribute any amount toward the cost of transportation of these buckets to Church World Service in Little Rock, Arkansas, that would be appreciated, too. CWS asks that we contribute $2 per bucket toward their cost in shipping the buckets when they distribute them to people who will use them to clean up after a disaster. In addition, we will have the cost of shipping these buckets, which are pretty heavy, to Little Rock, AR. We are working on two possibilities for getting the buckets shipped as inexpensively as possible through contacts that some of our members have with a trucking company and with Fed Ex. At this point we don't have specific information as to whether either of those options will work. We hope to have that information no later than June 23. We hope you will make a special effort to be present for worship on June 30 when we will dedicate these buckets during our 10:15 A.M. worship service. We will be honored by the presence of Julie Brumana, Coordinator for Church World Service in our Southwest Area, in that worship service. She will have a role in the brief ceremony of dedication, along with our Pastors, and possibly others whom they will invite to share in the ceremony. Finally, we are again most grateful to Phil Forbes for his outstanding work in coordinating this project, as well as to all of you who have contributed the funds needed to fill up the Emergency Clean-up Buckets that we already have on hand. The Outreach Ministry

Excerpt from Disciples News Service on CWS buckets:

First Christian Church in Granbury, Texas, received 200 CWS Emergency Clean-up Buckets designated for survivors of as many as three tornadoes that hit Granbury on May 15. Congregants Shanna Snider (pictured) and Don Tatlock (CWS Central America and Caribbean Liaison, who lives in Granbury) were on hand to receive the buckets, which will be distributed by Habitat for Humanity as people are allowed to return to their homes. Commented Snider, "These buckets are so important to people whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in a disaster. They're really overwhelmed thinking of all the things they have to do. They're not likely to think to put 'Buy soap and gloves' on their to-do list. But they're going to need cleaning supplies as soon as they come back home." Photo by Don Tatlock.
