The following is an excerpt of a Caller article I wrote 10 years ago about our congregations vision. In my humble opinion, we have fulfilled much of that vision, and we should rejoice over the many people who facilitated our realization of that vision. The vision God offers our church is becoming clearer and clearer. For example, it is clear that we are called to provide stronger ministry to and with our youth and young adults, continue to care for our shut-ins and other members with special needs, strengthen ministry to and with our seniors, and welcome the stranger in everything we do. We have work to do on our facility to make our church more hospitable and accessible. We will need to develop more small groups for new members to claim First Christian Church as home. Where do you feel a sense of ownership with the vision emerging in our church? Do you feel committed to sharing a substantial portion of your time and resources to strengthen youth ministry, young adult ministry, or senior ministry? Have you been sharing your time, talent and resources faithfully for years now, or is the idea of participating in the realization of a collective vision new to you? Do you hear the voice of the Spirit urging you to increase your giving so we can continue to support the part-time Associate Pastors and the important work they do while we expand our staff to include a youth ministry coordinator? Where is God calling forth your passion to be a part of the realization of our vision? The difference between a vision and a dream is commitment. When we embrace a vision, we commit ourselves to doing our part to make that vision a reality. Dreams never become reality unless they are formulated into concrete visions, which in turn are fleshed out in concrete goals. First Christian Church has ministered effectively in the name of Jesus Christ for 98 years because its members took ownership of the vision God gave them. If we are to realize our collective vision together, each of us must take ownership of that vision. What is God calling forth in our congregation today? Surely we are called to continue strengthening our ministry to and with youth, young adults, seniors, and our homebound or ailing members. Most of us see the great benefit weve provided our members and our community through our small group ministries and educational opportunities. We can also see the value in the efforts weve made to improve our accessibility, hospitality, and visibility in the community. What new efforts would God have us make? Are there areas of need within our congregation or our community we are called to address? As the Council of Elders spends time in prayer and discernment on these questions, I invite all of you to share with us your vision for our church. Email me at darrellmac@mac.com with your ideas for our churchs vision. If you prefer, make an appointment with me and share your vision for our church. Talk with Deb Taylor, the chair of our Elders and/or any of our Elders about your concerns, ideas, and inspirations. Its time for us to review, reshape, and recommit ourselves to a common vision for our church. Weve come a long way with help from long-standing members, new members, and friends. Where is God calling us to focus and serve? How can we be Good News people?

felt the spirit leading us. It was after much discernment that we knew the best thing for the worship service would be to move the time to the evening. And what a ReFreshing move that was! Emergent Worship sounds a bit foreign to many people, so I want to share a little of what you can expect when you come to this worship experience. Our worship service is not what many people call contemporary, despite the fact that we have a worship band. Emergent worship is a very experiential service. As you enter the service you will see different Prayer Encounters sometimes called Prayer Stations set up throughout the sanctuary. These are available and encouraged to be used at any point during the service. If you listen to the message better while doodling, we always have a table with crayons, markers, and paper for you to engage in that way. We also have a table with candles and rocks, paper and pens, where you can write down your prayer concerns or celebrations. If you put a prayer under a rock it stays between you and God, if you place a prayer under a candle, we will add it to the churchs prayer chain. We have 1-2 other prayer encounters that rotate in order to fit the theme for the month. We sing a lot of music, some of it is praise music, some is secular music that fits our theme, but all of it is bringing us closer to God. There is a short message - usually no more than 6-7 minutes, and partaking of communion that leads into an extended prayer time where you can experience the prayer encounters, pray in your seat, or pray with one another. The experience you have in this worship service is adaptable to your own style. If you enjoy more interaction, that is encouraged; if you want to sit and be surrounded by the experience, that is available as well. If you have not made it to our emergent worship service, I invite you to come and experience something just a little bit different. We would love to experience worship with you.
