FAS2000 SERIES OVERVIEW

MODULE OVERVIEW: PAGE 1 Welcome to the FAS2000 series overview. This module will introduce you to the FAS2000 series and some of the basic features and functions of the storage systems that make up this product line. This module should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. MODULE OBJECTIVE: PAGE 2 By the end of this module, you should be able to: Define the FAS2000 series storage systems Identify the key features and hardware components of the FAS2000 series storage systems Identify the similarities and differences between the FAS2000 series storage systems Explain the upgrade process for the FAS2000 series storage systems

FAS2000 STORAGE SYSTEMS OVERVIEW: PAGE 3 The FAS2000 series storage systems are available in three models: FAS2020, FAS2040, and FAS2050. These three systems combine the storage and controller in a single chassis to increase the functionality and deployment flexibility of the storage solution. With the FAS2000 series, you can manage growing complex data in small and medium enterprises and remote-office storage in distributed enterprise environments. These systems can be deployed in a variety of IT environments as both SAN (iSCSI and Fibre Channel) and NAS storage.

FAS2000 SERIES FEATURES AND BENEFITS: PAGE 4 Like other NetApp FAS family members, FAS2000 systems offer integrated block-and file-level data access over Fibre Channel and Ethernet networks, intelligent management software, and data protection capabilities of higher-end FAS systems. In summary, the FAS2000 series: Provides enterprise-level reliability in a smaller and cost-effective package Integrates storage and processing into a single unit Includes cost-effective and reliable disaster recovery Manages and stores applications and data using several standard protocols Slashes backup and restore times by half Simplifies management through consolidation of virtualized server environments

FAS2000 SERIES: STORAGE OPTIONS: PAGE 5 The FAS2000 series was the first storage system to introduce serial-attached SCSI (SAS) storage technology into the FAS family, thereby adding another drive type along with existing FC and SATA. More importantly, the FAS2000 series is the only member of the FAS product family that supports internal SAS storage with the controller unit, delivering a completely integrated

storage system. The FAS2000 Processor Control Module, or PCM, integrates the SAS expander and SAS controller module providing for the direct connection to SAS drives using the mid-plane board inside the chassis. Along with internal storage, the FAS2000 series also allows both FC and SATA storage to be used as external expansion storage. The expansion storage with the FC or SATA drive option uses connectivity from the storage controller to the expansion shelf using Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL). When using the SATA storage option, the FCP commands on the loop are converted to SATA commands by the AT-FCX module in the DS14mk2 AT shelf. In addition, the FAS2000 series supports the DS4243 storage shelves using an onboard SAS port on the FAS2040 and a SAS adapter card on the FAS2050.

FAS2000 SERIES COMPARISON: PAGE 6 We'll now look at each of the storage systems, beginning with the FAS2020 and highlight the key features in each. The FAS2020 is an entry-level system that is suited to either centralized data centers or distributed remote offices or branch offices (ROBOs) that require lower total cost of ownership and the ability to replicate or back up data to larger FAS systems located in corporate data centers. In addition, the FAS2020 is a good choice for Windows applications and file serving. The FAS2050 is an attractive alternative to larger systems in many deployment environments in which a compact footprint and total solution price are the key buying criteria. The FAS2040 fills a gap between the entry level FAS2020 offering and the specialized deployment solutions offered by the FAS2050. Furthermore, the FAS2040 offers the best overall performance, twice that of the FAS2050, and the highest capacity and disk drive count of the other two systems. The FAS2040 is also the only model in the FAS2000 series that supports DATA ONTAP 8.0.

FAS2000 ENCLOSURE: INTERNAL VIEWS: PAGE 7 These two diagrams show the internal view for the FAS2020, 2040, and 2050 enclosure. In both these enclosures the midplane connects all of the system components inside the chassis. The midplane is passive with the only active component being Serial EEPROM, which stores the serial number and some configuration information. The internal drives are removable through the front of the chassis. The controller and power supply are removable through the rear of the chassis. The FAS2000 is designed to have toolless assembly; all components latch into place using their handles. Additionally, controller modules and power supplies are each secured using a single thumb screw.

FAS2020 STORAGE SYSTEM: PAGE 8 The FAS2020 is a 2U storage system that supports 12 native SAS disk drives and SATA drives. The system can scale to a maximum of 3.6 TB with internal SAS disks and can support expansion capabilities with up to 2 DS14MK4 FC or DS14MK2 AT disk shelves. The table shown summarizes the disk configurations for single controller or HA active-active configurations.

FAS2020 - FRONT VIEW WITH AND WITHOUT BEZEL: PAGE 9 The front bezel is attached to the system with four ball studs. On the right side of the bezel are the standard NetApp status LEDs with universal symbols. When the bezel is removed, the four bezel ball studs are visible and the drive bay numbers are stamped on the left side of the chassis. The table shown lists the stand-alone and active-active drive options that ship with the FAS2020.

FAS2020 - REAR VIEW: PAGE 10 The FAS2020 supports active-active configurations with two controllers or a stand-alone configuration with one controller. In a stand-alone configuration, the bottom slot is preferred. A processor control module filler plate will enclose the top slot for stand-alone configurations. The FAS2020 has two 675W power supplies.

FAS2020 - CHASSIS REAR INTERFACE: PAGE 11 The FAS2020 PCM has the following I/O ports from left to right: 2, 4Gb FC slots, 0a and 0b.A console port, a remote management port and 2 Ethernet ports, e0a and e0b.The NMI (non-maskable interrupt) button is used to handle non-recoverable errors, which need immediate attention. Here are status and fault LEDs that are used as visual indicators to determine the state of the system's power, memory and processor controller module. The controller has the following labels from left to right: FC World Wide Name, System Serial Number and MAC ID. It is important to note that SFPs (Small Form-Factor Plugables) are only standard if FC SAN or expansion storage is ordered. FAS2020 - FIELD REPLACEABLE UNITS (FRUS): PAGE 12 FRUs can be accessed from the front or rear of the chassis, which is mechanically keyed. There are color coded touch points on the storage system for hot-swappable components. FRUs internal to the PCM require the PCM to be removed from the chassis for replacement. These internal FRUs are DIM Ms, NVMEM Battery, and the CompactFlash card.

FAS2050 STORAGE SYSTEM: PAGE 13 The FAS2050 is a 4U storage system that supports 20 native SAS disk drives and SATA drives. The storage system is available in a single controller or a dual controller HA configuration. It can scale to a maximum of 9TB with internal SAS disks and external expansion capabilities via 6 DS14MK4 FC or DS14MK2 AT disk shelves. In addition, the FAS2050 also allows for I/O expandability using PCIe adapters. Each controller module has a 1 by 8 PCIe slot, capable of 42.5 gigabyte per second aggregate bandwidth, which can be used for additional network, Fibre Channel, tape, or disk expansion connectivity. All specifications listed in the table correspond to single controller or HA active-active configurations.

FAS2050 FRONT VIEW WITH AND WITHOUT BEZEL: PAGE 14 The front bezel is attached to the system with four ball studs. It also has standard NetApp status LEDs with universal symbols and a Shelf ID Switch. When the bezel is removed, the four bezel ball studs are visible and the drive bay numbers are displayed on the left side of the chassis. The table shown lists the active-active drive options that ship with the FAS2050.
